Health and Fitness Is Front and Center at Allied Jewish Apartments teaches Posture Perfect, a class that emphasizes exercises to increase flexibility in the feet, knee and hip joints. “The goal of these exercises”, explained Bila,“is to help people keep walking in spite of arthritis or stiffness.” Bila herself still jogs to keep fit. The newest additions to the AJA Fitness Program have been three sophisticated exercise machines that include a recumbent cross trainer.“I tried the exercise machines at the Open House,” said Isabel Rivers, 79. “They’re great. I’m really glad to see them added to our exercise options at AJA. I like to walk, but these machines will be particularly useful when there’s snow and ice outside. Seniors at Allied Jewish Apartments taking Chair Yoga.

Bert Spector, 92, feels that the 25 years she exercised regularly at the YMCA saved her life. Ten years ago Bert had two serious operations and heart failure.“The doctors said that if I hadn’t been exercising regularly these past 25 years, I wouldn’t be here.” Bert, a resident at Allied Jewish Apartments, shares her expertise by leading one of the morning Fitness Fun exercise programs that take place 3 mornings each week at AJA. A goal of Allied Jewish Apartments has always been to help residents remain healthy and independent as long as possible, which has been the purpose of our longstanding dinner program, the Wellness Clinic operated by the Dominican Sisters and a Foot Clinic operated by the VNA. We now know that a regular exercise program is as essential to good health as good nutrition and medical care. “Over the last 3 years,” said Connie Moore, AJA’s Director of Activities and Volunteers, “our residents have become more interested in new ways to exercise and stay fit, and so we’ve expanded our offerings.” The fitness program at AJA now includes Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Fitness Fun (strength training) and Wii Fitness, which includes yoga, aerobics and balance training. Natalya Bila, 73, a resident of AJA, and a former ballerina with the Odessa Opera Theatre Ballet Company,

Bess Brown, 95, a resident of the Assisted Living Program at AJA, summed up her reasons for participating in the exercise programs five days/week: “I like the camaraderie of the exercise groups. They help my brain, my heart and my balance.”
