Backgrounder: Community Snapshot
Community Snapshot is an online database where users interact with the information contained within Jacksonville Community Council, Inc.’s (JCCI) indicator progress reports, such as Quality of Life and Race Relations. This interactive web-based experience contains all of the data JCCI has collected during their 34 years of service to the community and is available through their website www.jcci.org. Within Community Snapshot users will view an indicator and witness how it has changed over time, compare their county to others and the average for Florida or the nation. Every field within Community Snapshot is connected. As users scroll over the map to a county, information is highlighted along the bar graph and a new line is drawn to represent the numbers reported for the given area. Charts, graphs and maps ease the understanding of information as statistics can be viewed in a multitude of ways and interpretation of complex figures becomes straightforward. If a user requires less information than is shown, every box can be removed and positioned as they deem necessary. The goal is to provide the same indicators that community leaders, government officials, corporations and citizens have come to rely on in a customizable format to suit their needs. With the ability to modify the visual flow of data presenters will be allowed the freedom to create a portrait that will best strengthen their grant proposal, advocacy for change, call to action, highlight of an important issue, news report or community affected decision. Tools assist users to make the most of Community Snapshot. There are online tutorials which demonstrate how to navigate through the indicators, proper procedures for printing and window customization. A help feature is built into the program allowing on-the-spot assistance. JCCI will host training available open to the public and will answer specific questions from users. By the first-quarter of 2010 Community Snapshot will continuously update information provided from Florida as soon as it is reported. In the past, the Quality of Life and Race Relations Progress Reports were inhibited by their ability to only be printed once a year due to the complex nature of the indicators being measured. Now stakeholders will have access to the most recent figures and numbers once available, allowing key decisions to be made with real data, in real-time.
