Molly Burack Annual Lecture HOLD FAST THE TIME Written by Marilyn Bornstein In Marilyn Bornstein’s gripping novel, Ora Shappel, a suburban 64-year old Jewish widow, travels to Israel to corroborate the details of a past life she experienced while under hypnosis. Both lifetimes, Ora’s and her counterpart’s, Julia Crispina, a Roman slave and prostitute, collide in a time warp of romance, politics, danger, and forbidden love. Marilyn Bornstein, a teacher and family therapist, has combined her professional expertise with her love of writing to create this first novel. She has written poetry and published magazine articles. She has been a beloved member of the JCC/NCJW Life Long Learning Program for many years.

With Assisted Living, the right fit is everything. At JHAL, we create a sense of belonging, because we are one family. Whether our residents are culturally, spiritually or traditionally Jewish, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Through activities like Yiddish sing-alongs, our Jewish Women lecture series, programs by the 92nd St. Y, and challah baking, our residents find common ground with peers. Volunteers of all ages visit from local synagogues and Jewish groups to form relationships with our residents based on shared interests. Cultural connection is not the only reason to come to JHAL in River Vale, but it’s one of the many reasons it feels like home. Call John Albanese, Director of Marketing at 201-666-2370 for a tour today!

Spring 2014 STRANGERS IN A STRANGE LAND: ETHNIC LITERATURE IN AMERICA

NEW JERSEY @ 350 YEARS Learn the unusual history of our State, featuring English cavaliers, Jockey Hollow, early industry, pro-slavery sympathies and the Klan, migration, crime and political corruption, suburbia, riots, and perhaps the finest state supreme court in the nation. EUGENE LIEBER, Associate Professor Emeritus, Essex County College, lectures extensively at the JCC and in the North Jersey area. Monday, May 5, 1:30pm NCJW/JCC Member: $12, Guest: $15 CJ-AD414MNJY

Explore novels about the immigrant experience that is a crucial component of the American melting pot: Henry Roth’s Call It Sleep, Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Oscar Hijuelo’s The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. It would be helpful to have read the books prior to the discussion, but not mandatory.

FROM THE RIDICULOUS TO THE SUBLIME

BENJAMIN NELSON, Professor Emeritus of English at Fairleigh Dickinson University, is a popular lecturer at our Life Long Learning program.

The Colorful Realm of Living Beings

Tuesdays, March 25, April 1 & 8, 1:30pm NCJW/JCC Member: $15, Guest: $20 CJ-AD414TSSND This program is supported by the Lowenstein Endowment. Amy, an accomplished poet, was a devoted and beloved member of the Life Long Learning Committee.

POETS OF BROADWAY Explore two great lyricists of The American Songbook: Ira Gershwin and Cole Porter. Examine the wit, the rhyme, the wordplay and the themes of some of their most memorable songs. Degenerate Art In 1937 in Munich, art was taken from German museums and gathered and exhibited under the label, “Degenerate Art.” This talk will explore the reasoning behind the exhibition and the ultimate results. This group of animal and flower paintings is unlike anything else in Western or Asian art. We will view slides and marvel at the work of this extraordinary Japanese artist of the 18th Century named Ito Jakuchu. The scrolls are owned by the Japanese Imperial family and are seldom on display. BARBARA TOMLINSON is Professor Emeritus at Kean University. She teaches cultural history in continuing education programs and leads tours to cities in the United States and Europe. This talk will explore the characteristics of “degenerate art,” explain why it was believed to be so dangerous and recount the fates of the artists involved. Never before has the question “Is it art?” seemed so important.
