For your convenience, rubber pants are available at the Reception Desk. JCC MetroWest is a leading Authorized Provider of the American Red Cross. Our Aquatics Department proudly offers: • Professional instructors who are well trained through the American Red Cross. • A balanced program that teaches swimming skills and how to be safe in the water. • Learning made fun in a safe environment. • Comprehensive swimming and water safety options for everyone in the family—from infancy to adulthood. For each level of Parent and Child Aquatics, our instructors follow a plan to introduce new swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate for infants and young children. Routines and the familiar are extremely important to your young swimmer. Each class uses toys, songs, fun, and games to keep the children engaged and enjoying the water experience, all the while teaching them basic aquatic skills.

It is important to understand that Parent and Child Aquatics is not designed to teach infants and toddlers to become skilled swimmers or even to survive in the water on their own.

early childhood Contact Director of Early Childhood Services, 973-530-3479 PRESCHOOL JCC MetroWest offers families with children age 2-5 years part-time or full care options. Professionally trained staff guide children through a program rich in art, music, drama, science, and physical exploration. They begin a process of building reading and math skills. The program is designed to give children and their families opportunities to learn about and celebrate our Jewish heritage.

KINDERGARTEN Children who turn 5 by December 31 of the year they enter Kindergarten are invited to participate in our program. Our reading and math programs are designed to meet children’s individual needs. There are many opportunities for science investigation, cooking, music, art, and computers. Under the guidance of our Aquatics, and Sports & Recreation department, instructional gym and swim are included in the program. Children experience a full range of Jewish programming as we celebrate Shabbat and holidays.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMING We believe that learning is everywhere. We weave it into your child’s day in a nurturing, safe, and fun-filled environment that will prepare your child for the academic challenges ahead. For children 2-5 years old, these classes build upon the activities and education that they are already receiving in the classroom: swimming skills, tennis, cooking, ballet, art and drawing, hockey, soccer, and much more. KIDS CLUB Extended hours through our Kids Club are available 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday-Thursday; 7:30am-5:45pm on Fridays.

Full care program meets 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday-Thursday; 7:30am-5:45pm on Fridays.

Adler Aphasia Center at JCC MetroWest

THE ADLER APHASIA CENTER AT JCC METROWEST welcomes people of all ages who have been diagnosed with aphasia. Contact Wendy Greenspan, Program Director at 973.530.3981 or wgreenspan@adleraphasiacenter.org for more information and to set up a tour. ADLER APHASIA CENTER A Place of Reconnection of Rediscovery, of Recovery. Welcome to the Adler Aphasia Center- a place of hope. We are a resource for people with aphasia, their caregivers, and the community. Through our innovative group therapy led by licensed speech-language pathologists, we provide a stimulating environment to improve communication and cognitive skills and strengthen social connections to help you live a fuller, richer life.

How do we help people with aphasia and their caregivers? •

Through group activities, the arts, technology, fitness and caregiver support groups, our programs help our members and their families reconnect with life by:

Improving communication skills

Exercising cognitive skills

Building self-esteem

Making social connections

Building strategies to help families meet the challenges of aphasia

34

How is the Adler Aphasia Center structured? •

Members with aphasia participate in 3 groups a day

Groups activities change by the semester, based on member interests

The program meets on a semester basis, twice a week for 15 weeks (3 semesters a year)

What is the cost to attend? Cost is $750 a semester ($25 a day). This is less than one-third of the Center’s actual cost per member. Scholarships are available- no one is turned away for their inability to pay.

What is a day like at the Adler Aphasia Center?

Sample groups include: brain fitness, computer labs working with language based software, skill-building handwriting and spelling, fitness, advocacy, aphasia 101, current events, cards and games, jewelry and gift design. Is long term rehabilitation possible? The Adler Aphasia Center at JCC MetroWest’s primary focus is on direct services for people living with aphasia and their caregivers. At the Center’s flagship campus in Maywood, research is being conducted that demonstrates that over a one-year period, our members with aphasia experienced a significant increase in functional language and perceived quality of life due to their participation in Adler Aphasia Center programs.

THE PLIGHT OF COMEDIANS ON THE BIG SCREEN Mondays, July 9, 16 & 23 • 10:30am Member: FREE Guest: $8 per movie • $20 per series Join us as we enjoy three films that will make you laugh and cry as we explore the plight of comedians on the big screen (in date order):

My Favorite Year • Fictional treatment of the backstage shenanigans during Sid Caesar’s weekly television program, Your Show of Shows. Brash comic King Kaiser has ordered his youngest gag writer Benjy Stone to take care of the guest star, flamboyant matinee idol Alan Swan. If Benjy can keep his hero sober and deliver him in time for the show, he’ll hold on to his job. Anything can happen, especially in front of a live audience. Mr. Saturday Night • Billy Crystal is perfectly cast in this story of a stand-up comedian who is trying to succeed. In spite of his brother/ manager’s help and support, he still manages to become only a mediocre success. Studded one-liners and funny routines, this film takes a hysterically comic and sometimes poignant look at what makes people laugh. The Sunshine Boys • The comedic story of two retired Vaudeville comedians who had toured the country as “The Sunshine Boys” and always left their audiences rolling in the aisles with their antics. But offstage, they spent 43 years in constant mutual irritation. Now their agent urges them to reunite after years apart, and this forms the funny, sad, and loving comedy story being told.
