early childhood SPLASHY SCIENCE

UNO! DOS! TRES!

Water is one of the basic raw materials for motivated and inventive play, and continuous learning. Water play soothes and relaxes. Water can be explored and experimented on in any form and texture (ice, hot, cold, gooey, ice chips, etc.), any color and any size (the wading pool, puddles, rain, buckets, little containers, etc.) Water play science has endless benefits for young children. The children will thrive while they pour, scoop, measure, mix, splash, and more. In this after-school enrichment class, the children will play, feel, and explore water in many forms and in many ways. They will get messy and sometimes wet.

What an opportunity! Children love learning new things and it is so much fun to learn a new language. Jump on the Spanish choo-choo train and pick up new words. Spanish will be taught through songs, games, and visuals that are age-appropriate for your children. 2 1/2–5 yrs Jan 21–Jun 3 Tu Jan 21–Jun 3 Tu

Please note: 12:45 classes are for children age appropriate for a 2 1/2 or a 3 year old nursery class unless otherwise noted and 2:10 classes are appropriate for a 4 year old program unless otherwise noted. Cardio Tennis

Please call if you do not see what you are looking for. We will try to accommodate requests for new classes.

Cardio Tennis includes warm-up, cardio work out, and cool down phases. If you are looking for a great new way to get in shape, burn calories, and improve your tennis game, why not try Cardio Tennis?

Contact Sherri Feldscher, 973-530-3425 (sfeldscher@jccmetrowest.org). Programs are listed in alphabetical order. A color key is provided at the bottom of each page for age/grade reference.

Adventures in Gym Supervised gym time for children in a 2 year old preschool program and children 2 years old ready to participate in a class without a parent. Children will be given balls, hoops, scooters, beanbags, frisbees, and more. Slides, tunnels, balance beams, and obstacle courses will also be explored. Each class will include an instructor led activity.

Cardio Tennis is a series of tennis-based drills and activities played to uptempo music. It does not require advanced tennis skills, but is all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories, and having fun. Whether the ball goes in or out is irrelevant as the main purpose is to get fit.

There are drills for intermediates and advanced players, all of which provide you with a great cardio workout while improving skills. The tennis workout session takes place on our gym floor and is run by our tennis pro/ coach. The main purpose of the session is to provide you with an enjoyable work out, while improving your tennis skills. It’s not a tennis lesson per se; it’s about getting in your appropriate cardio zone and getting a great workout. Prerequisite: must be at least an intermediate tennis player. Adult

ADLER APHASIA CENTER A Place of Reconnection, of Rediscovery, of Recovery. Welcome to the Adler Aphasia Center—a place of hope. We are a resource for people with aphasia, their caregivers, and the community. Through our innovative group therapy led by licensed speech-language pathologists, we provide a stimulating environment to improve communication and cognitive skills and strengthen social connections to help you live a fuller, richer life.

How do we help people with aphasia and their caregivers? Through group activities, the arts, technology, and fitness & caregiver support groups, our programs help our members and their families reconnect with life by: • Improving communication skills

What is a day like at the Adler Aphasia Center? 9:30am - 10:00am Enjoy a cup of coffee and a breakfast snack with fellow aphasia members 10:00am - 11:00am First group session meets 11:00am - 12:00pm Second group session meets

• Exercising cognitive skills • Building self-esteem

12:00pm - 12:30pm Lunch

• Making social connections • Building strategies to help families meet the challenges of aphasia

12:30pm - 1:30pm Final group session meets

How is the Adler Aphasia Center structured?

Sample groups include: brain fitness, computer labs working with language based software, skill-building handwriting and spelling, fitness, advocacy, aphasia 101, current events, cards and games, jewelry and gift design.

• Members with aphasia participate in 3 groups a day • Groups activities change by the semester, based on member interests • The program meets on a semester basis, either on Mondays and Wednesdays OR Tuesdays and Thursdays, for 15 weeks (3 semesters a year)

What is the cost to attend? Cost is $750 a semester ($25 a day). This is less than one-third of the Center’s actual cost per member. Scholarships are available- no one is turned away for their inability to pay.

Is long term rehabilitation possible? The primary focus of the Adler Aphasia Center at JCC MetroWest is on direct services for people living with aphasia and their caregivers. At the Center’s flagship campus in Maywood, research is being conducted that demonstrates that over a one-year period, our members with aphasia experienced a significant increase in functional language and perceived quality of life due to their participation in Adler Aphasia Center programs.

THE ADLER APHASIA CENTER AT JCC METROWEST welcomes people of all ages who have been diagnosed with aphasia. Contact Wendy Greenspan, Program Director at 973-530-3981 or wgreenspan@adleraphasiacenter.org for more information and to set up a tour.
