“Very fittingly, after the Torah is read on Shabbat, a series of prayers are offered for those who uphold the Torah's values... our rabbis, teachers, leaders both lay and professional - and all those who give tzedakah and build the community. There is no better way to thank you all of you for what you do than this blessing. Fondly, Sydney He who blessed our patriarchs and matriarchs, may He bless this entire holy community, along with all holy communities - the adults, the children, and all that is theirs; and those who dedicate synagogues for prayers and those who enter them to pray, and those who give candles for illumination and wine for kiddush and havdalah, bread for guests and charity for the poor; and all who are involved faithfully in the needs of the community - may the Holy One, Blessed is He, give them reward and remove them from any affliction, heal their entire body and forgive their every iniquity, and send blessing and success to all they undertake, along with all Israel, their brethren, and let us say: Amen.

A person who runs to do just, good and kind deeds attains life, success, and honor. Proverbs 21:21

Sydney, How appropriate this quote from Proverbs to describe what you have been to our community. How lucky we were when you accepted your position as head of Makom twenty-nine years ago and created a vibrant Jewish High School with an enrollment of over three hundred teenagers. How fortunate we were to have your Judaic weekly columns combining the weekly sedra to our community needs. How blessed we were to have your passion for Jewish education, for social justice, for the sick and unfortunate among us. Tonight is your night, and no one could deserve it more. With much love, thanks and respect, Stacey & David Trachten and Iny & Joel Karp Co-Chairs Celebrate Sydney!

A rabbi saw a man planting a carob tree. The rabbi asked, “How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?” The man replied, “70 years.” The rabbi asked, “Do you think you will live to eat the fruit of this tree?” The man replied, “Perhaps not. However, just as my father and grandfather planted carob trees for me, I am planting trees for my children and grandchildren so they can eat the fruit.” ~Adapted from Talmud Taanit 23a~

Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for recognizing the need to educate and empower leaders for the future of our community.
