Welcome to the exciting second season of the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection. This year we are delighted to showcase works from emerging Israeli artists nurtured at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Opening at the Maltz Museum this October, Bezalel on Tour will feature a variety of disciplines such as ceramics, fashion and industrial design. The focus on visual arts continues with exhibitions at the Roe Green Gallery of the Jewish Federation’s Mandel Building. From David’s Journey, a visual interpretation of the life of King David by artist Ivan Schwebel, to Belief, photographs by Natan Dvir, whose images focus on political, cultural and social issues. Documentary films play an important role in enhancing cultural offerings. The Return of the Violin provides the fascinating back story behind virtuoso Joshua Bell’s Stradivarius, while Incessant Visions explores the life and inspirations of Erich Mendelsohn, architect of The Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights. If music piques your cultural appetite, then you will savor the sounds of world musician Idan Raichel, jazz sensation Anat Cohen and singer/songwriter David Broza. We know you will find inspiration through Israeli arts and culture. Join us!

David’s Journey
Exhibition runs through November 4 Roe Green Gallery Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Mandel Building 25701 Science Park Drive, Beachwood Presented by the Jewish Federation’s Cleveland Israel Arts Connection Experience the renowned Israeli-American artist Ivan Schwebel’s interpretation of the life of King David, drawn from the Books of Samuel and Kings. Beautifully melding images of the past and present, Schwebel has placed David and his Biblical associates within contemporary settings, be it modern-day Jerusalem, the Judean Hills or New York City. The superbly textured surface of his canvases, layered with a rich impasto of oil, shimmer and ripple with life. Schwebel’s brilliant drawing technique and dynamic placement of color add deeper layers to the narratives. •
In Schwebel’s best work, the paint speaks for itself: the pools and explosions of rich color…luminous figures emerging out of dark shadows, the quirky, dramatic compositions. – The Jerusalem Post 4

October 3 - 7, 2012 The 3rd annual FilmFest brings compelling films from around the world for five exciting days. Events include filmmaker panel discussions and the opportunity to experience stories from around the world.
Fluchkes Fluchkes (Yiddish for flabby arms) chronicles a group of colorful and energetic elderly women as they prepare for a public dance performance. The women bravely confront the hardships and demands of the art of dance, while candidly sharing their feelings about getting old. Ameer Got His Gun Ameer, an Israeli citizen and Muslim Arab is about to enlist in the army. Although exempt from military service under the assumption that his enlistment may endanger Israel’s security, he believes that his induction is the way to equality, the way to belong to the state he lives in, the state he wants to love. •

Pinchas Steinberg
Conducts The Cleveland Orchestra October 18 - 20 Severance Hall 11001 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland Presented by The Cleveland Orchestra Critically acclaimed for his profound and deeply musical interpretations of the most demanding repertoire, both opera and symphonic, Pinchas Steinberg is one of the leading conductors performing today. Born in Israel, Steinberg studied violin under Joseph Gingold and Jascha Heifetz in the United States and composition under Boris Blacher in Berlin. In December 2001 Mr. Steinberg made a triumphant concert debut with The Cleveland Orchestra and returns to Cleveland on a regular basis. This October he will conduct works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev.

Frédéric Brenner
Encounters with a World-Renown Photographer Monday, October 29, 7 pm Kiva Auditorium Risman Drive, Kent Presented by Kent State University, Jewish Studies Program Contemporary photographer Frédéric Brenner spent 25 years traveling the world documenting the lives of Jews in more than 40 countries on five continents. Born in Paris in 1959 and trained in social anthropology, Brenner, now living in Israel, also draws upon history and philosophy for his project to capture images of the Jewish Diaspora in such places as India, Italy, China, Ethiopia, Yemen, Mexico, Russia, Canada, the United States, as well as Israel. By establishing visual histories of Jewish communities in flux, Brenner records the evolution of Jewish civilization, debunking stereotypes and illuminating the concept of cultural diversity, while exploring myriad reinventions of the Jewish people. • •

The Return of the Violin
Attended by Special Guest, Joshua Bell Wednesday, January 16, 7 pm Gartner Auditorium, Cleveland Museum of Art 11150 East Boulevard Presented by Cleveland Museum of Art This Israeli documentary follows the remarkable story of a 1731 Stradivarius violin, owned by Israeli Philharmonic founder Bronislaw Huberman. In 1936 while Huberman played Carnegie Hall it was stolen and remained “lost” for nearly 50 years. The violin was eventually put up for sale as a museum piece in 2001. Unable to see such an instrument remain silent, the Huberman Stradivarius was purchased by American virtuoso, Joshua Bell. • •

His images have been published internationally by New York Times Magazine, Newsweek and Glamour, among many others. Dvir’s acclaimed work, recently awarded Picture of the Year Award by the Israeli press, has been exhibited at venues across Israel, Europe, South American and the United States, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. •

Area high school students participating in this seven-month leadership program traveled to Israel last June. While there, they joined photographer Natan Dvir for on-site workshops. 14

The Idan Raichel Project

He has worked with about 100 different musicians and singers to fuse traditional Middle Eastern instruments with electronic sounds, and to combine Jewish music with that of regions ranging from West Africa to Latin America and India. And while Hebrew dominates his lyrics, his songs are peppered with languages including Arabic, Amharic, Swahili, Spanish and Creole Portuguese. Not only are German Expressionist architect Erich Mendelsohn’s buildings stunning but his drawings pulsate with dynamic energy. Among his many accomplishments are the Einstein Tower in Germany, the Mt. Scopus Campus of Hadassah Hospital in Israel and The Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights. This two-part event celebrates Mendelsohn’s vision as realized in The Park Synagogue’s iconic design. Israeli documentary filmmaker Duki Dror’s Incesssant Visions, illuminates the life of Erich Mendelsohn through letters exchanged by the architect and his wife Louise, a young cellist. Dror breathes life into the correspondence of two passionate artists who helped each other weather a turbulent time in history.

Beyond the Center: A Celebration of the Hidden Gems in Israel April 10 - 21 Presented by The Laura & Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University The documentary-based series showcases the emerging Israeli film industry. The 2013 theme offers a glimpse of the communities outside of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem; those communities in the so-called periphery of Israel, geographically and metaphorically. Beit Shean, one of the cities in Israel’s periphery, has maintained a partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland since 1995. The partnership focuses on creating deep and meaningful personal connections between Clevelanders and individuals in Beit Shean and the surrounding Valley of Springs in an effort to increase connections to Israel, Jewish identity, community development and volunteerism. The Reel Israel will dedicate three of its films to celebrate Cleveland’s relationship and dedication to the people and communities of Beit Shean and Valley of Springs. •

Uzu and Muzu from Kakaruzu
Orchestrated by Avner Dorman and based on the children’s book by Ephraim Sidon April 16 - 19, 10 am Venues include: Mary Queen of Peace, Old Brooklyn Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, Cleveland Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, Beachwood Presented by CityMusic Cleveland Uzu and Muzu are brothers whose love was so great, “They had never known bitterness, anger or hate.” Yet one day the two fought and built a giant wall–splitting their house in two. For generations the dreadful legend of the hideous people on the other side of the wall is embellished but no one remembers who built the wall and why. Two small great-great-great grandchildren bring the wall down in a hilarious tongue-in-cheek ending. Israeli-born composer Avner Dorman will join the CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra to bring this vibrant book to life through music and narration. •

Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland
Featuring Anat Cohen April 19 - 29 Presented by Cuyahoga Community College Anat Cohen Born in Tel Aviv, Anat grew up with accomplished musical siblings; her older brother Yuval is a saxophonist and her younger brother, Avishai, is a trumpeter. She began clarinet studies at age 12 and played jazz on clarinet for the first time in the Jaffa Conservatory’s Dixieland band. After high school, she discharged her mandatory Israeli military service duty playing tenor saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band. An established bandleader and prolific composer, idiomatically conversant with modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango and an expansive timeline of Afro-Cuban styles, Anat established herself as one of the primary voices of her generation on both the tenor saxophone and clarinet. She has been voted Clarinetist of the Year six years in a row by the Jazz Journalists Association, and the 2012 Multi-Reeds Player of the Year. “With the clarinet she becomes a singer, a dancer, a poet, a mad scientist, laughing—musically—with the sheer delight of reaching that new place, that new feeling, with each chorus.” – JazzTimes 20

GroundWorks Dance Theater
A World Premiere by choreographer Noa Zuk Fall 2013 Allen Theatre Complex, Playhouse Square Presented in partnership with Cleveland State University Noa Zuk joined the Batsheva Ensemble in 1997 and was a member of Batsheva Dance Company from 2000 to 2009. She has worked extensively with noted international choreographers and is a teacher of Ohad Naharin’s Gaga Movement language. Zuk received the Yair Shapira Award prize for dance excellence. •

Sunday, October 28, 3 pm Mixon Hall, Cleveland Institute of Music 11021 East Boulevard, Cleveland Presented by The Musical Theater Project in association with Beck Center for the Arts Hosted by Bill Rudman and Sheldon Harnick with vocalists George Roth, Jessica Cope and Jared Leal, this concert brings to Cleveland the great lyricist Sheldon Harnick, whose Broadway musicals include Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fiorello! The 87-year-old Harnick and Bill Rudman will take the stage to introduce and discuss Harnick songs chosen for the occasion by the lyricist, including Sunrise, Sunset and If I Were a Rich Man. • •

The Whipping Man

Presented by The Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University Vivian Mann is director of the Master’s Program of Jewish Art and Visual Culture and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and former chair of Judaica at the Jewish Museum. Dr. Mann has created numerous exhibitions and their catalogs, among them, Gardens and Ghettos: The Art of Jewish Life in Italy; Convivencia: Jews, Christians and Muslims in Medieval Spain; and most recently; Morocco: Jews and Art in a Muslim Land. She is the author of Jewish Texts on the Visual Arts and Art and Ceremony in Jewish Life: Essays in the History of Jewish Art. • •

Expression & Inspiration Jewish Arts and Culture Lab New Artist Fellowships now available
A new program, the Jewish Arts and Culture Lab, kicks off this year offering fellowships for emerging artists through a partnership between the Cleveland Jewish Arts Collaborative (CJAC) and the Mandel JCC. The artists will study together, ultimately creating works tied to a specific and shared Judaic theme. The mission is to enable the arts to be a Jewish source of expression and inspiration for local artists, culturalists and the broader community. •
Cleveland Jewish Arts Collaborative (CJAC) A platform connecting young Jewish Clevelanders with cutting-edge Jewish and Israeli art, culture, local artists and arts initiatives.
