OUD BEATS DUO Sunday, September 14 @ 3 pm

INFERNO
Now through October 19 Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage 2929 Richmond Road, Beachwood
One WorldFest Cleveland Cleveland Cultural Gardens Rockefeller Park, Cleveland
Yael Bartana, one of the most celebrated Israeli artists of her generation, has described her provocative film as a “historical preenactment,” commingling fact and fiction, prophesy and history.
Oud Beats Duo is a project of two talented artists from two different music genres that combines classical Middle Eastern sounds with new age electronic beats. Yuval Havkin, aka Rejoicer, is one of Tel Aviv’s busiest producers and founder of the Raw Tapes label, home to Tel Aviv’s own beat movement. Itai Peer, born in Jerusalem in 1980, is a Guitarist and Oud performer with affinity to Middle Eastern folk music. This collaboration brings a new, hip cluster of sounds that just might make you move.
Building on Bartana’s early video work, INFERNO explores the complexity of contemporary life. Debuting in 2013 and filmed in São Paulo, INFERNO looks at the rise of Evangelism and Neo-Pentecostalism in Brazil and their connections to the ‘Holy Land’ as well as Judaic traditions and history. Specifically, the film considers the implications of the actual construction of the third Temple of Solomon in São Paulo. Built to biblical specifications, this new temple will be a replica of the first temple in Jerusalem, the violent destruction of which signaled the diaspora of the Jewish people in the 6th century BCE. Through this vision, Bartana asks if the temple’s construction foreshadows its destruction. Using a powerful cinematic language, INFERNO collapses histories of antiquity in the Middle East with a surreal present unfolding halfway around the world.

ONE HOUR A DAY
BY SHAI AZOULAY Presented by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Cleveland Israel Arts Connection
In his paintings, Azoulay creates a narrative abundant with figures and scenes that radiate human warmth, compassion, and slight irony. His work ranges between drawing and painting, between the sophisticated and the naïve, and between the omnipotent to the limited. As such, the work addresses the two conflicting worlds found in the mind of the contemporary painter – the classic, iconic, romantic, and spiritual world on one side, and the modern, moonstruck, and saturated world on the other.

Roe Green Gallery, Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Mandel Building 25701 Science Park Drive, Beachwood Shlyome-Zanvl Rappoport, known by his pen-name S. An-Sky, was not only “the father of Jewish anthropology and folklore,” but also the uncle of Jewish visual ethnography. From 1912 to 1914, S. An-sky and his nephew, the photographer Solomon Iudovin, gathered materials and took photographs of Jewish daily life in pre-Revolutionary Russia’s Pale of Settlement. Iudovin took over 2,000 photographs, documenting all aspects of Jewish life inside the Pale, including work, education, and religious and cultural traditions. The photographs include portraits, some in mug-shot form for anthropological documentation, craftsmen staged at their works, teachers and children in traditional schools, and views of shtetl homes and squares. The original photographs, misplaced for decades, were rediscovered in the early 21st century under a sofa in an artist studio that once belonged to a friend of Iudovin. Experts at “Petersburg Judaica” at the European University in St. Petersburg restored the photographs.

FALL 2015
coming next season
VIOLINS OF HOPE Centered around stringed instruments that survived the Holocaust, Violins of Hope provides an incomparable opportunity for learning and reflection regarding one of the most horrific periods in human history. Through exhibits, lectures, and a performance by the Cleveland Orchestra, the program allows greater Clevelanders to explore the power of music to sustain the human spirit in even the most desperate of circumstances. Painstakingly restored by second-generation Israeli violin maker Amnon Weinstein, the instruments travel the world to offer tangible symbols of resilience and sustenance, inspiration and imagination. The project’s centerpiece will be a concert on September 27, 2015 by the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst, featuring soloists playing the restored violins. The event will also herald the grand opening of The Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple – Tifereth Israel. The violins’ visit to Northeast Ohio is made possible through the cooperation and support of Case Western Reserve University, Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, The Cleveland Orchestra, Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Cleveland Institute of Music, and ideastream, the nonprofit organization that includes PBS television station WVIZ, National Public Radio affiliate 90.3 WCPN, and classical music station WCLV 104.9. The project will include related university course offerings throughout the semester, a major exhibition at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, lifelong learning classes, public lectures, programming by WVIZ/PBS ideastream, and performances by Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University students.
