Dear Friends, To create the vibrant array of Israeli Arts & Culture that you see in each brochure, the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection does a lot of work behind the scenes. We continually plant seeds for future collaborations and the offerings in this brochure celebrate their harvest. Following his residency at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2015, composer Oded Zehavi will have the world premiere of his Piccolo Concerto performed by The Cleveland Orchestra (page 12). Our investment in theater will also realize the U.S. Premieres of two provocative Israeli plays. “The Tunnel” by Roy Chen, will enjoy staged readings this summer, followed by a fully staged production in 2021 at Dobama Theatre (page 14). And Cleveland Public Theatre is securing the rights to a U.S. Premiere by one of Israel’s most beloved playwrights; the production will be announced in our next brochure. Lovers of the visual arts will enjoy the current exhibition in the Roe Green Gallery of works by Shony Rivnay (page 6), followed by a photographic exhibit from Boaz Aharonovich (page 8). And in the fall an incredible exhibition of delicate glasswork by Dafna Kaffeman (page 9) will open. Award-winning writer and director, Yehonatan Indursky is a graduate of the elite ultra-Orthodox Ponevezh Yeshiva, and later a top alum of the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel Film School. He wrote and created, with Ori Elon, the esteemed drama series “Shtisel,” which won 17 Israeli Academy of Television awards. The series is currently an international hit on Netflix. His fulllength documentary “Ponevezh Time,” competed at the was nominated for Best Documentary Film at the Israeli Academy Awards. “Driver” (2018), his first full-length film, won the Israeli Critics Award.

THE MAKING OF SHTISEL: A JEWISH ODYSSEY
Tuesday, February 11 @ 7 pm Shtisel co-creator Yehonatan Indursky was brought up at an orthodox house in Jerusalem. After he completed a prestigious Yeshiva he decided to become secular, leaving his Orthodox family and moving to Tel Aviv. In this lecture Indursky speaks about his Orthodox home, the inspiration for the show Shtisel, and how the show changed his relationship with his home and the orthodox community.

Indursky wrote and directed the series “Autonomies,” which received rave reviews and won Reflet d’Or for Best International Television Series in Geneva International Film Festival. “Autonomies” imagines an ultra-Orthodox autonomy in Jerusalem that is surrounded by a wall and operates strictly in accordance with Halachic laws. Indursky’s short film “The Cantor and the Sea,” won the best director prize in Jerusalem Film Festival 2015.

“Unfolding Nature: Dancing Through Waves,” consists of a series of vibrant paintings, filled with characteristic biomorphic shapes that have been deliberately exaggerated and infused with harmony. The choreography of the work is laced with intense forms and unexpected colorations. The work is based upon the visual images derived from other disciplines, particularly that of music. The compositions are precisely correct and Rivnay succeeds in his efforts to find order in abstraction. Shony Rivnay is an interdisciplinary Israeli-American artist based in Tel Aviv, Israel. He works in various media including painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. He has exhibited solo shows in numerous locations around the globe including Berlin, Germany, Venice, Tokyo, and South Korea as well as Tel Aviv and New York City. Rivnay’s works are in private and public collections worldwide. He holds a BFA from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, Israel.

Roe Green Gallery, Jewish Federation of Cleveland Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Building 25701 Science Park Drive, Beachwood “Growing a Garden for an Unknown Lover”, Boaz Aharonovitch’s ongoing photo-diary, documents a gardening project that took place in his studio. Incorporating photographic works and a single-channel video art installation, the archived garden is created from flowers, vegetation, and containers Aharonovitch collected from his immediate surroundings. Committed to the process , he cultivated his plants, staged them to create the most appealing image and photographed them- hoping the image will attract an unknown lover. The outcome of the process is a meditation on the ephemerality of the garden as a metaphor for the passage of time and longing. Boaz Aharonovitch was born in in Israel in 1970, and currently lives and works in Tel Aviv - Jaffa. His main practice is photography, but his works also include drawings, installations and video works. He received both his MFA and BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. His work appears in numerous museums and private collections worldwide. Aya Goshen, born and raised in Israel, is an experienced, independent curator currently living in New York. She received an M.A. in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art and an MBA from Tel Aviv University.

Israeli born glass artist Dafna Kaffeman has been challenging viewer’s notions about tolerance, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and morality in Europe, the United States and Scandinavia. Her exquisitely crafted plant specimens, made in flame-worked glass from Israel’s natural world, are combined with embroidered texts. Handkerchiefs, often associated with mourning, are the backdrops for many of the glass plants. Inspired by nature, her pieces convey the complexities of life in Israel. Her work ignites an intellectual and emotional response.

Kaffeman began her studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and received her BFA at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In 2002 she received her MFA from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. She now heads the glass department at Bezalel. Oded Zehavi’s music runs the gamut from atonality to neo-romanticism and has won international accolades from both audiences and critics for its appealing and emotional content. His tonal language draws from music traditions of the Middle East (Jewish and Arabic), European art song and contemporary techniques, exploring the fusion of western and ethnic musical heritages. Zehavi’s first concerto for piccolo and orchestra will be premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra, Matthias Pintscher conducting, in Severance Hall: a commission by its principal piccolo Mary Kay Fink and music director Franz Welser-Möst. A Jerusalem native, Zehavi is well versed in a wide variety of musical styles (pop/rock arrangements, soundtracks, electronic, chamber and orchestral music) and is renowned for his vocal scores and textual affinity for classics of Hebrew literature. He is the recipient of numerous prizes and residencies, most recently the 2015 Schusterman Visiting Artist Residency (Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Institute of Music, Ohio, USA) as well as the 2014 Prime Minister’s Prize for Composition. Zehavi began piano studies at an early age, and during his teen years worked as an arranger and programmer for the Israel Broadcasting Authority. He served as a tank commander during the First Lebanon War, an experience which profoundly affected his world view and musical direction. Zehavi is Professor of Music at Haifa University, where he founded the Department of Music in 1995. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Severance Hall this November under the direction of Music Director Designate Lehav Shani, successor to Maestro Zubin Mehta. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) was founded in 1936 by Bronislaw Huberman and its inaugural concert, on 26 December 1936, was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The orchestra plays in subscription series in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa and regularly tours the world’s cultural centers and prestigious festivals. Sholiton’s multiple award-winning play was inspired by a box of “Hello Again” newsletters that circulated to Cleveland Jewish troops from 1942-45.
