Auditorium Renovations

Science Labs

taylorvandenhull | newseditor The auditorium will undergo a $670,000 to $737,000 facelift starting this summer. “The auditorium hasn’t been updated since the school was built and we’d like to use it for more things,” Principal Dr. Joe Hornback said. The construction is scheduled to start in May and end in October. The plans include raising the floor to make the stage lower to the ground, a new lighting and sound area, two storage areas and new carpet, seats and curtains. The school board looked at four to five plans and narrowed it down to the final plan. The renovations will be paid with the capital outlay funds.

Bathroom Renovations marissasatterfield | staffwriter Between the broken down stalls, endless flushing, and outdated sinks, bathroom renovations are needed. Those changes may soon become a reality. “We’ve had a lot of students voice their concerns over the last couple years,” said Dr. Joe Hornback said. “This year the building is 50 years old with the original fixtures, so updates are definitely needed.” There are no plans set in place for the renovations. “It’s not that we didn’t want to make the renovations,” Hornback said. “It’s just that the timetable takes longer than what people want,” said Hornback. The goal for the bathrooms near the media center is to form one large women’s restroom. New stalls, sinks, and hand dryers will be included. The restrooms near the auditorium will combine into one large men’s restroom with new stalls, sinks, and hand dryers. The cost is uncertain, but all will be paid with the capital outlay fund.

2

ericvalenzuela | staffwriter New lab stations for rooms in the science wing are in the works. According to Dr. Joe Hornback, prinicpal, the plans are to build lab stations that provide gas, water, and electrical. New sinks will also be provided in the new lab stations. According to Hornback, the renovations are taking place due to the lack of efficient lab stations and space in the science rooms. The goal is to have the labs stations built before the beginning of next school year. Architects are in the process of looking at the rooms to formulate a plan. Expenses will come out of the capital outlay budget.

Cafeteria Renovations marissasatterfield | staffwriter Lately, many renovations have taken place in the school. The cafeteria has an improved vibe thanks to the new murals on the walls, but with the round tables it often feels like a prison, rather than a high school cafeteria, according to Dr. Joe Hornback, principal. The administration has met with architects and has begun discussing ideas on a new cafeteria layout. “Our goal is to take the space and make it more inviting and less institutional,” Hornback said. “Think more like Applebees and less like prison.” The general plan is to get new and improved seating arrangements, and the administration has discussed installing booths along the perimeter of the cafeteria. Hornback said we are lucky the cafeteria has an exceptional amount of space, which will allow architects to create a whole new environment Like the bathroom and auditorium renovations, the cafeteria updates will be paid with capital outlay. There is no timetable on when those renovations will begin.

Rehabilitation by Music A look into how Isaiah Singleton spends his free time ericvalenzuela | staffwriter While some students might spend their free time playing games, watching movies, and listening to music, sophomore Isaiah Singleton spends his free time creating music. What made you start producing beats? I’d say just listening to old artists like Big L and Logic. I got inspired from listening to artists who were popular back then. How long have you been making beats? I’ve been doing this since the fifth grade. What program do you use? FL Studios Do you work solo? I make the beats by myself and start from scratch. My dad would help me out with some ideas and co-produce. How many have you made? I’ve made over 200 beats in my time producing. Do you just make beats? I also rap whenever I get way into my beats, when I start feeling them; I just go ahead and flow. Have you ever sold any beats? I usually give out beats for free for those who can’t buy them, but I’ve sold three beats at around $90 each. Favorite Producers? My favorite producers would be 6ix, a producer of Logic along with Jay-Z and Kanye West. Even though they make music they also have leisure time to where they make beats and they also helped inspire me. Style of making beats? I’d say trap, but not the DJ trap, old school 90’s boom bap, etc. Stuff Big L would rap to. What kind of Genres do you work with? I work with wide varieties of genres, from hip-hop to sometimes even country; it’s hard to believe. I’ve worked with pop a couple of

times because there was a couple pop singers I had to record for. I do R&B, almost everything, even rock. What beat would you consider your best? I have a lot of beats that are good from what I’ve heard from other people, but I’d say my favorite one was when I did a sample of a 60’s singer, Dusty Springer. I did a sample of her old songs. Story behind producer name? My producer name is Rehab. The name comes from a lot times growing up where I’d have a lot of trouble at home and it affected my brain. I had to go through a bunch of therapy, a lot of brain rehabilitation. That is where I got the name Rehab. Where can people hear your beats? SoundCloud @Iam_Rehab Do you want to go big? I actually do, but I know it’s going to take a lot of time. But, yeah, it’s my dream. Some people have basketball as their getaway, and even though that’s one of my favorite sports, the music is my getaway.

No time for other things As most know, student-athletes have many different experiences that nonathletes don’t have. We must balance the demands of sports training and competition while staying on track with academics. As a student-athlete, I try to use my time wisely, yet no matter what I do, it all plays out in the same, stressful way: I wake up early, go to school and spend hours listening to teachers or taking tests, run off to practice, then go to other extra-curricular activities (like a choir concert) and return home to be faced with a buttload of homework. Then I do the exact same thing the next day. On Monday’s and Thursday’s it gets even trickier because I play an outside-of-school sport with a volleyball team that practices from 8 to 10 p.m. in Lawrence. I get back home around 11 p.m. Sometimes I feel like I’m so overloaded with no room for anything else, and I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. It’s not just athletes who have too much on their plates. Those who hold part-time jobs also know my pain.

“I have to be very efficient with my time at school because some nights I don’t have time for homework, so I have to get it done at school,” junior student athlete Emily Nelson said. “It’s a lot of stress.” I know that I choose to play sports, but it would really be nice if our teachers could cut us some slack. I just need some extra time to do homework assignments. When I come home from practice, I am just exhausted. I don’t want to do anything else but lay down from how tired I am. Unfortunately, for student athletes being exhausted is just a part of life. The homework load these days is not light, especially if I don’t have time to do it after school. Teachers assign hours worth of homework each night, expecting that we have a lot of time after school to do it all, but we don’t. One thing that would help out our stress would be bringing back the late starts and early releases on block days, so we could have more time to do our homework. At Piper High School, students with good grades get an early release on Thursdays and late starts on Fridays. I know late starts and early releases could help all students and athletes to focus more in class and get our work done for the next day. It would also help eliminate stress. If our school adopted early starts and late releases, you might be surprised how much our grades will go up.

Standing up for Lady Braves Every athlete loves to hear the roar of the crowd and the support of our Orange Crush as they run in for a touchdown or dribble down the court, but the Lady Braves are getting left out of this great experience. Unfortunately, our female athletes do not get the same recognition and support that our boys’ teams get. In some of the girls’ games, the national anthem is not even played before the games, but it is always played before the boys’ games. Anyone who has been to a basketball game this winter has seen it firsthand. The Orange Crush section doesn’t stand or cheer during the girls’ game, but for our guys they stand and are much more involved in what’s going on. Why are the girls not getting the same equality and why is their game not as important as the guys’ games? I myself have spent a lot of time in the Orange Crush section and for a time I too sat down during the girls’ game. This isn’t right and it is something that needs to be fixed next year, so that this doesn’t reoccur and more of the girls feel unappreciated I hope future OC Chiefs will learn from this and will

6

make it a priority to support teams equally. It’s not like the girls’ team performed poorly. They finished out their season with a 14-6 overall record and compete at a high level. The girls deserve to feel like their games matters just as much as any boys’ varsity games because they do matter and they are still Bonner Braves. “We don’t understand why the guys get more support than we do,” said junior Miyah Hightower. “Both teams are equally talented.” And while we’re talking about next year, supporting the girls isn’t the only change that needs to be made. All sports deserve to have an Orange Crush section with someone cheering for them. Lately, the student body has been very disrespectful at assemblies and games. Whether it’s refusing to support our girls in their sports or talking during a presentation and outright ignoring the speaker who took the time to talk to us, it needs to come to an end. But we have a chance to turn things around with this upcoming spring season. We can show the soccer, softball, and swimming teams the recognition they deserve so that no althlete feels like the school doesn’t care and that their sport is not appreciated. I want the Orange Crush to be at all of our sports, cheering for all our Braves. It’s time to care about all the Braves victories and become tied together as a school. No sports victory should be more important than another—especially if the only reason is that they are girls.

It all started with a poster in a Shawnee Mission middle school that angered a parent—a poster that was a little too nonchalant when it came it came to sex education. Unfortunately, some Kansas lawmakers have used the incident to propel a ridiculous bill that will possibly limit free speech in classrooms. According to The Kansas State Legislature website, SB 56 seeks to remove “affirmative defense to promotion to minors of materials harmful to minors for public, private, or parochial schools.” For those of us who do not keep up with lawmaker lingo, this bill means that a teacher who teaches something or distributes material that parents find “harmful”could be subject to a class B misdemeanor charge and, if convicted, serve up to six months in jail or face a fine of up to $1,000. So what qualifies as “harmful”? The bill states that harmful material could include anything from nudity to sexual conduct or anything that a reasonable person would find that “lacks serious literary, scientific, artistic or political value for minors.” Opponents fear the law, which has already passed the

Senate, would have a chilling effect in classrooms, and it would make Kansas the fourth state in the nation with a law that tries teachers as criminals for “harmfully” teaching. Opponents are afraid that teachers who teach “controversial” books like Huckleberry Finn, A Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird could be charged criminally if parents find these works “harmful.” “The real question is who decides what’s offensive or damaging. I hope it’s not the state,” English department chair Allen Holder said. “If I teach something that some people might take offense from or that might be controversial, such as Huckleberry Finn’s use of the N-word, we talk about it. We talk about why Mark Twain uses it as much as he does,” Holder said. So what should concerned Kansans do? We should take the lead of more than a 100 students at East High School in Wichita, who spent an entire lunch period on Feb. texting and emailing legislators urging them to vote against SB 56. We need to protect the teachers who teach us what we need to know. Regardless of your age, you need to speak out against SB 56. —jacob kraus for the Pow Wow staff

grinding my gears | taylor vanden hull When thinking of the things that might stress you out during a school day, some might point to calculus class, cafeteria food, or their senior project. But for a lot of people like me, the most stressful part of the day is at 2:55 p.m. when we attempt to leave the parking lot. First of all, there’s always that group of people who park in two spots either because of horrible parking or because they have a truck and think that they have to right to use two parking spots. I have a small car so maybe I don’t understand the struggle, but I know that if you tried that most vehicles could fit into one parking spot. Second, the people who pull into the line without anyone letting them in, causing the other person to have to let them in or crash into them. I get that you want to leave but you could wait. I’ve been stuck in the parking lot multiple times because nobody will let me in and I understand how frustrating it can be; however, if people could avoid being so reckless that’d be great. Lastly, there are always those people who purposefully don’t let anyone in line, which causes people to force their way in. Normally I try to let a person or two in to be nice, and when the favor isn’t returned, it’s a little irritating. I’ve become accustomed to the reckless driving in the school parking lot but when I first started driving it was the most terrifying place to be. It’s a parking lot full of high schoolers who want to go home, so you can’t expect for it to be the calmest place ever but it’d be wonderful if drivers could be courteous for once.

Whether it be soda, Monster, coffee, tea or in the form of a pill. Many students are too dependent on getting their dose of caffeine paigekrone | staffwriter Your alarm clock rings at 6 a.m. and the grogginess begins. You consider hitting the snooze button a few times but instead you head to your kitchen for either a cup of coffee or a Monster energy drink, which will make you feel more alert—unlike those extra five minutes of sleep. Without this early dose of caffeine, you would start your day off in a terrible mood and run the risk of an ever-lasting headache. The two cups of coffee you think will give you enough energy to last the whole day only end up getting you through your first three hours of school. By lunch time, you’re craving a fizzy, caffeinated drink, so you chug a Coke Zero to go along with your chicken patty. After school, you head to McDonald’s for a large sweet tea or Coke. You’ve just got to have that caffeine, yet in all honesty do you know the effects that caffeine has on your body? How much is too much? According to caffeineinformer.com, teenagers should limit

their caffeine consumption to 100 milligrams (approximately three cans of Coke) while adults should consume anywhere from 300 to 400 milligrams (about three eight-ounce cups of coffee). Although caffeine can boost your mood, it is a stimulant that can both harm and help you.

“I’m in my own personal caffeine rehab, I drink way too much. I would drink anywhere from four to seven cans in a time span of 12 hours,” —senior Jon Nay According to the Caffeine Informer, caffeine is addictive because the molecule itself fits so perfectly into our brain’s adenosine receptors, which is responsible for telling the brain when it is time to rest or sleep. Since these receptors are blocked with caffeine molecules, dopamine (the feel good chemical) works more efficiently. The excess adenosine signals the adrenal glands to release adrenaline, which further maintains the feeling of alertness. Over time, the brain adds more adenosine receptors to compensate for the caffeine, which causes a “tolerance” to build up to the caffeine molecule. When a person decides to quit their usual caffeine intake, the brain is then flooded with adenosine and then dopamine levels drop drastically, causing the brain’s chemistry to be out of balance. Negative effects of too much caffeine may include insomnia, headaches, indigestion, increased anxiety, and heart contractions. According to Caffeine Informer, if your coffee beans are grown outside of the

country then most likely you’ve been exposed to pesticides due to preservations. Pesticides have been linked to several cancers and Parkinson’s disease. Senior Jon Nay has been a major caffeine addict since age nine. “Sodas have always been my filler drink. Some people have milk, some people have water, but I just drink pop,” said Nay. As of recently, Nay has cut back on the caffeine. “I’m in my own personal caffeine rehab; I drink way too much,” Nay said. “I would drink anywhere from four to seven cans in a span of 12 hours.” The average soda consumption for teenage males is 2.5 cans per days. Nay’s cutback from caffeine allows him to only drink one can of his favorite soda every other day. Nay’s favorite drinks include Mountain Dew Code Red, Wild Cherry Pepsi and green tea. Nay said he feels tired without the extra boost but has not experienced other withdrawal symptoms. School nurse Kim Bolewski sees many symptoms of caffeine withdrawal each and every day—symptoms from a minor headache all the way to sleep insomnia and depression. Bolewski herself drinks around two caffeinated drinks per day, totaling 14 to16 in a week and can notice obvious side effects when she is without caffeine for long periods of time. “I think you get used to it. You get used to having it and when you don’t have it your body feels sluggish and tired. It can take days for your body to recover from not having it, which is what it makes it so addictive,” said Bolewski. Caffeine isn’t all that bad, and it can actually be beneficial in headache relief and other situations. For adults, three to five cups can be heart healthy. Like all things, of course, caffeine should be consumed with common sense and moderation. Know your own limits for your individual body type. “I could see that small amounts could be helpful,” said Bolewski.

Year of the underclassmen

Ryan Downing

darrylterrell | staffwriter As the winter sports season comes to a closure, there has been a dominant display of athletic performances from sophomore Tanner Hitchcock and freshman Ryan Downing Hitchcock capped off a 35-4 wrestling season with a thrilling 4-2 overtime victory for the state title in the 113-pound weight class. “It was really intense especially to come out with a win,” Hitchcock said. Freshman Ryan Downing shattered all but two of the school swimming records while finishing the season as one of the best swimmers in the state. The two highly touted underclassmen came into the season with high expectations. Hitchcock came into the preseason as the top ranked wrestler in the 113-pound weight class in the 4A classification; however, the ranking was least of his concerns. “I really didn’t pay attention to the preseason rankings,” Hitchcock said. As for Downing, the freshman went into every swim meet as poised you can be and that didn’t change at the state swim meet where he finished second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle. “I wanted to make every meet feel like it wasn’t a big deal, so I wouldn’t get nervous,” Downing said. After Hitchcock placed fifth last in year in the 5A tournament, getting back to the big stage was simple for him. “I just did everything that I needed to do,” Hitchcock said. The two plan on competing in the offseason, as Downing will participate on the Kansas City Blazers club swimming team. As for Hitchcock, he will have the chance to wrestle on the Kansas National Team.

Ready to take the field Lady Braves hope to return to state tournament alyissamendoza | staffwriter After advancing to a post-season tournament for the first time in school history, the Lady Braves soccer team finished their season by taking fourth at state. “It felt really rewarding and was just a very awesome experience,” senior midfielder Shelbey Taylor said. “Mike [Moulin] has been preparing us for that moment since forever.” The trip to state was particularly meaningful because many of the players grew up playing together on club teams, which was a real boost to team chemistry. “We’ve been playing together since we were in fourth grade, so we know each other pretty well and we know the runs each of us are going to make,” junior sweeper Kennedy Bacon said. To prepare for a possible return to state, the squad has been conditioning and working on foot skills after school three days a week for months. However, one possible obstacle the team will face is replacing three talented senior starters—goalie Kennedy Bizzell, midfielder Bailey Hightower and wing Hannah Hunt. “We’re pretty good at adjusting, and we know what we need to

March Madness is finally here paytonsechrist | staffwriter It’s the month we’ve all been waiting for, that glorious time of year where you can’t get enough basketball and NCAA March Madness. Each year, millions tune in to watch the games, with many fans participating in bracket challenges. For the second year, it looks like billionaire Warren Buffett and Quicken Loans will be offering big bucks to the fan who fills out the perfect tournament bracket. Even though sports fans are anxiously awaiting the details and the announcement of prizes, I’m here to tell you why filling out a bracket would probably be in your best interest. Some may argue that picking the perfect bracket is too hard. In fact, in last year’s competition 15 million entries were wiped out after the first round. I say it doesn’t matter if your chances of picking a perfect bracket are one in 92 quintillion. Go with your gut and fill out that bracket. Buffett does agree that last year’s competition might have been too difficult, saying he would like to “give people a better shot than last year.” But, hey, we’re potentially talking about big bucks here, so who cares what the chances are. Even though there was no billion-dollar winner last year, there were 20 lucky participants who went home with the runnerup prize of $100,000 each. That’s good enough for me. So what should you keep in mind when filling out your bracket? Although some may be influenced by what has happened during the conference tournaments, it’s important to focus on how teams have been doing over the long haul. The teams that you should be looking at are the teams that you believe will go far in the tournament. Eliminate those who may not live up to the buzz they’ve been receiving. Even if you don’t watch basketball, I would recommend you fill out a bracket; it might change your life.

trio

Trio is a hot new app that combines all three of your favorite social media sites into one. Here’s a quick FAQ with Misha Leybovich, the CEO and co-founder of the new app. This FAQ was done with Misha Leybovich, the CEO and co-founder of Trio to promote the new app that hit the app store on March 4. What does Trio do? Trio makes it easy to remix other people’s (friends, celebrities, brands) assets (videos, photos, gifs, music) into awesome mashups, putting the world of popular media at your fingertips. This lets you be funny and creative anytime, so you can look cool even if you’re not doing cool activities all the time (meaning more content by more people more often). Mashups are emerging as a mainstream art-form for communication and expression among friends, and Trio makes it a great experience for creators, consumers, and content owners. But aren’t there multiple photovideo apps? How right you are, my friend. But virtually every other app is about using your own Camera Roll assets, which means you need to be pretty regularly having baller adventures. By making the world of third party assets easily available, we unbundle the ability of making awesome content anytime from the requirement of doing awesome activities. Where do these assets come from? Instagram, Vine, Giphy, iTunes, Movie clips, and Image search to start. Soon we’ll have even more sources and become the place for mashups.

What about the original content owners? Just like Pinterest, we do linked attribution to every asset used and can drive loads of traffic and purchases to original content owners. We are also working with public APIs and extremely short clips used in highly derivative and noncompetitive manner.

So what kind of mashups do people make? Some fun examples we’ve seen so far are: Mashups of friends with famous movie quotes, beautiful slide shows of today’s best Instagram fashion posts, sports highlights with voiceover commentary, tributes to your favorite celebrities and shows, hilarious bad lip readings of movies and Vines, and personal expression through

GIFs set to music. Why was Trio created and how did the idea evolve? My personal journey was in the seven years between graduating college and starting the company I traveled to 70 countries, and always liked making media mashups about my journeys. During this time I had a lot of ideas about how to make my creation easy for everyone, and wanted to build a product everyone could use. My co-founder had his own journey through music, media, and tech and came to some similar conclusions. How easy will it be for high school students, or non-tech savvy people to navigate and operate Trio? Well, if we did our jobs right then hopefully it will be super easy! But if anyone thinks it’s not we want to know about it. We can always be reached at trio@trioapp.co How much will Trio cost in the app store? Will Trio only be accessible for iPhones or will there be an Android version be available? Trio will be free in the app store. It will only be available for iPhones right now, but a version for Androids will be released later in the year. Will users be able to follow people they know on Trio? Yes, it is a follower model just like Instagram

Reviewing Trio kynnedyshepherd | a&eeditor I downloaded Trio to play around with it to see if it was something the Pow Wow really wanted to do a story on and I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by it. At first the idea seems a little weird: mashups of pictures, gifs, and videos? It sounded a little fishy to me, but after downloading it and playing on it, I came to like it a lot. You can use your own personal social media accounts to create Trios or you can use others that are incredibly easy to access through the app. The app is set up so it’s easy to navigate, especially for someone who isn’t all that tech savvy. I feel like Trio is something everyone who enjoys funny and equally cool mashups should download.
