A closer look at drug dogs taylorvandenhull | newseditor For the first time in two years, a surprise drug dog search took place at BSHS on Tuesday, Jan. 13. It took four teams consisting of a police officer and a drug dog approximately 55 minutes to complete the search while students stood in the hallways outside of their classrooms. Dr. Joe Hornback, principal, said no drugs were found during the search and that he plans to have more in the future. Two of the dogs in the search were back in the building on Jan. 29 as part of a demonstration in Trish Elder’s fourth-hour forensic science class. We caught up with the officers who work with those animals before the presentation. What are the names, ages, and breeds of the dogs you work with? Officer Tommy Lee: My dog’s name is Thor, a three-year-old Dutch Shepherd who has been with the department for a year and two months. ACT profile | Sam Nelson ericvalenzuela | staffwriter Whether you are taking the ACT tomorrow morning or later in the spring, here are some helpful tips from senior Sam Nelson. How many ACT tests have you taken? I took three ACT tests and two PLAN tests. What was your best score? My best score is a 31. I got 34 in science, 33 in English, 31 in reading, 27 in math. How did you prepare? I prepared by taking A LOT of practice tests. I bought a book full of them. I also expanded my vocabulary by studying from a book called Word Smart. It has its own exercises, but I mostly just memorized like 20 words at time.

What goals did you have? I really wanted a 32 and I got close. That’s really the big number; getting more than a 32 doesn’t really matter. What tips do you have for students taking the ACT? Study a lot. The more you study the better you will do. All the tests are the same in a sense. If you do enough practice tests, you will start to see that and the test gets much easier. I would also suggest getting a good nights sleep. The biggest problem I had was not relaxing enough when I took the tests for real. I know it’s hard, but my biggest tip would be to just relax and take the test.

Those courses include Mythology, Science Fiction, Pop Culture History, Conspiracies and Scandals in U.S. History, Debate, Forensics, Acting, Stage Craft, Web Page Design, IT Essentials and others. According to Dr. Joe Hornback, principal, staff members were asked to suggest new classes they thought students would want to take. Students were then given the chance to select those courses and other electives during pre-enrollment last week. After pre-enrollment requests are entered in Skyward, students will then create two schedules based on their requests the first week of March.

Mock Trial marissasatterfield | staffwriter Mock Trial is exactly what it sounds like, a trial that students act out. Each student has a particular role. There are three lawyers and six witnesses, and one student is required to play two witnesses. The teams compete against other schools and perform twice as prosecution and twice as defense. The meet is right around the corner and will be held at the Johnson County Courthouse on Feb. 28. Sponsors Jennifer Stricherz and Linda Orangkhadivi will be taking 21 students who compete on three teams: one varsity and two novice.

Security cameras updated taylorvandenhull | newseditor Approximately 30 new digital security cameras have been installed all around BSHS. The cameras were purchased because the old ones were around 12 years old and needed updating. According to Dr. Joe Hornback, principal, the new cameras have more coverage all around the building than the old cameras did. The new cameras cost approximately $60,000 and were purchased with district capital outlay funds. The board approved the purchase of new cameras this past summer and the cameras were installed in January. “The old cameras will eventually be taken down and thrown away or sold,” Dr.Joe Hornback said.

Aaron Ashford enjoys working with exotic pets ericvalenzuela | staffwriter While some high school students work retail or flip burgers to earn a few extra bucks, senior Aaron Ashford earns his wages working with exotic animals at Go Lizards in downtown Bonner Springs. Most of the work Ashford does consists of taking care of sick pets, cleaning waste out of cages and attending to customers. Ashford says the best part of his job is working and teaching people about animals that most have never heard of. However, not everything about working at a pet store is fun. “My least favorite part of my job is the days when I have to clean the rat cages. There is a lot of poop and it stinks,” Ashford said. Ashford makes $9.25 an hour working with the many different animals. The animals consist of pythons, cobras, bearded dragons, sugar gliders, turtles, small monkeys, and many more. So how did Ashford land such an interesting part-time job? He said he used to visit Go Lizards to buy food for his pet snake and spoke with the manager about working at the store. Ashford has definitely learned many things since his first day on the job in June of 2011. “I have learned that you have to be careful when handling any animal, no matter how small or large they are,” Ashford said. “You have to have a lot of responsibility when running the store by yourself. Dealing with the public can be hard at times.”

Pledge away the R-word According to Webster’s dictionary, the word “retard” is a verb that means “to make slow or to be delayed.” I have no problem with this definition. What I do have a problem with is when people take that word and use it to make fun of or to degrade those with intellectual and physical disabilities. I’m talking, of course, about the R-word. To this day, I can honestly say I have never said the R-word, and I’ve made it crystal clear that anyone who wants to be near me is not allowed to use it in a derogatory way. There are those who have questioned my position, saying “What’s the big deal, I didn’t mean it like that?” If you didn’t mean it, then change what you say. It’s a very easy fix. I despise this word because it does not accurately describe those with disabilities. To tear someone down for a disability that is out of their control is simple-minded and hurtful. We misuse the word. Just because you say it to your friends without disabilities doesn’t make it any less

offensive to those with a disability. Period. Beyond that, the word is degrading to our fellow human beings. If you’ve ever been in our Life Skills classroom like I have, you would see that the students there show more growth in a day than I do in weeks. It’s such an amazing feeling to go there and watch them grow so much and so quickly every single day. We are fortunate at Bonner that we have a school and community that is supportive of those with special needs, and I am extremely grateful that I don’t have to see incidents where students with special needs get physically harmed like I’ve read about online or seen in the movies. But I still hear the R-word lingering through the halls, which means there’s still work to be done. There are plenty of people that feel the same way. The website www.R-word.org is devoted to bringing awareness on this issue. The organization encourages people to sign a pledge saying they won’t use the word. We have a banner of our own, but unfortunately only 111 students have signed it. We can do way better than this. I challenge each and everyone of you to head up to the media center and sign the pledge to stop use of the word. Don’t have time? I have the perfect solution for you. Kissing PDA goodbye With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love is in the air and in the halls. The trouble is most of us just don’t want to see or hear that love. Almost every day while I’m peacefully making my way to class, I’m rudely interrupted with the sounds of lip smacking. I mean is it really necessary for a big long smooch during every passing period? Does the kiss expire after 50 minutes or something? It’s always the same couples standing against the lockers gazing into each others eyes like they just haven’t seen each other last passing period, ending their conversations with long awkward hugs and multiple unneeded kisses before the bell rings. I’ve really never understood these things; it’s weird to me that you want everyone including your teachers walking the halls to watch while you and your significant other are kissing and hugging. Honestly, what are you trying to prove? We get it; you guys are into each other.

There is a time and a place for that and school isn’t exactly the place. Your PDA plays out like a horror film for those of us who must view it. And it’s not just the sloppy smooches that drive me crazy, it’s also the unneeded congestion that PDA adds to the halls. Why should we have to awkwardly maneuver around couples slowly walking down the halls, holding hands to show the whole world how in love they are and savoring every moment of the five-minute passing until they have to part ways? Holding hands is fine, but if it’s causing a roadblock you need to pick up the pace. Slow, romantic strolls should be saved for your Saturday date nights. Of course, there are those couples who shield us from their love and who refrain from PDA. Let me be the first to thank your for your self control. So to those happy high school couples who love each other (or think they love each other) as much as they love showing PDA, please stop crowding the halls with that nonsense. The bottom line is this: Even though you couples may be in “love,” none of us want to witness it, so instead of kissing your significant other goodbye try kissing PDA goodbye. It’s just awkward.

As senior year is rapidly coming to an end, seniors aren’t primarily focused on their Senior Project or other work for that matter. Instead, many seniors are stressing over the question of how they will pay for their future. According to the College Board, the cost of attending an in-state college last year was approximately $22,000, while tuition at a private school was about $45,000 a year. Take those number times four and a college degree is going to cost you close to $100,000 if not more. The thought of taking out a loan to pay for this education is quite the nightmare, yet more and more Americans are forced to borrow money to pay for their dream of a college education. co According to U.S. News and de lleg gr e World Report, the average ee college graduate left school with a debt of $28,000, which provides an inside view of why a lot of seniors are stressing over money. “I plan to go to the college of veterinary medicine at K-State. and one of them is President Barack Obama. In his Jan. 20 State of the Union Address, President Obama proposed offering two years of community college for free to students. The federal government would pay for 75 percent while the states would pick up the remaining costs. “I want to spread that idea all across America, so that two years of college becomes as free and universal in America as high school is today,” d Obama said. e The idea has already become a reality in two b places. Last February, Tennessee became the first t state to provide free community college to high school graduatues regardless of merit or need. The new “Tennessee Promise” hopes to increase the state’s level of college graduates up to 55 percent. Last October, the city of Chicago followed suit and rolled out a similar plan, but with a required 3.0 high school GPA. Some might scoff at the idea, saying that America cannot afford this. You’ve probably heard her on the radio; that’s right, I’m talking about Taylor Swift. Taylor isn’t just someone everyone knows; she is someone everyone has a clear understanding of and a strong opinion about. Her face and voice are instantly recognizable, and her personality and musical ideas are easily dissected. She is the epitome of a pop superstar. As I remember Taylor at the start of her career, she only wrote songs with strong stories. While I understand everyone needs to somehow cope with breakups, I feel Taylor needs a different angle, instead of writing her songs by repeating herself over and over. For example, when you hear the song “Out of the Woods,” she sings the word “woods” 37 times. In “Shake It Off,” she sings the word “shake” over 70 times. It eventually becomes annoying. When it comes to popular music or artists, there is no star as big as Taylor, and nobody who can fill her shoes. Taylor garners attention from around the world, selling millions of albums and filling stadiums around the globe. Unfortunately, we’ve reached the point where there’s too much Taylor. From the Thanksgiving day parade to having a tumblr account devoted to her armpits, there’s no escaping her. I am just tired of constantly switching stations and hearing the same two songs of hers are playing over and over.

Switching roles When most people think of your stereotypical video game players, they almost always think of a teenage boy like freshman Hunter Murphy (shown above) hunched over in darkness, but a new study is showing that’s not the case. According to a survey released last June by the Entertainment Software Association, adult women now play more video games than boys under the age of 18, making up 48 percent of the gaming market. The spike in female gamers is likely tied to the increase in smart-phone adoption, according to Charles Pulliam-Moore on PBS News Hour. “I am not surprised to see women getting more involved, ” said physics teacher Katrina Martin, who plays 10 to 20 hours per week. “Gaming has its own sense of community that people really enjoy, even women.” Video games have now adopted more female roles with options to customize the gender of certain characters in hopes of appealing to more women. “It’s like girl gamers are treated as goddesses in the gaming world,” said sophomore Alivia Crouch. “I guess in today’s world, video games are viewed as an interest towards guys more than girls.” Another female who enjoys video games is freshman Aneska Radcliff, who plays the Call of Duty games, HALO, and Insidious. She plays about 28 hours per week at a friend’s house because her console is broken. “You get a lot of attention sometimes. If you talk to someone and they ask if you play video games, it’s always a conversation starter,” Radcliff said. “There are some negative stereotypes, however, and lots of people think girl gamers are fake.” Crouch agrees that there is sometimes disbelief when it comes to serious female gamers and says other gamers are often surprised by her knowledge. “I love playing first person shooter games especially Team Fortress 2, and I have clocked in about 200 plus hours on that game alone,” Crouch said. “Whenever I play online against other players or when I meet other gamers in competitions, people seem to be really surprised when they realize I’m a hardcore video gamer that’s female,” said Crouch, who plays games about 30 hours per week. Video games generally are designed to appeal more toward younger men, but with girls getting more involved will the games change? “I don’t think girls playing video games will change anything,” said Dakota McKeehan. “But guys will be able to talk with girls about gaming more.”

This game has had the most successful launch in Bioware history. It was released November 14, 2014. Dragon Age: Inquisition has received three awards including the GLAAD Media Award for Special Recognition, Game Award for Game of the year, and Game Award for Best Role-Playing Game. We here named this one the ugly not because the game was bad at all, but because of the fact that most people just weren’t aware of how great this game was. It is a multi-player online game allowing you to play quests with your friends. This game has received two gaming awards including Best Online Experience and Best Score/Soundtrack. Within the first five days, 325 million dollars worth of copies were sold. Although with all of its success some were not impressed with the game play making it a big let down for some. My game, my way Here’s an inside look at freshman Mason Dobbs and the gaming computer that he built. Who inspired you to build a gaming computer? I saw someone else build one and thought it looked fun and decided to build one myself. Where did you find the money to build the computer? My grandparents and parents spoiled me with money during Christmas. How long did it take to build? It took 2 months to get all of the parts but I built it in a day. What is the difference between playing games on your computer and your console? The graphics are better and the game runs smoother on my computer. What was your parents’ reaction when you told them you wanted to build this computer? They said sounds good, you will have to get the money yourself and it would be a good experience for you. What was the hardest part? I had a broken part and I had to take it back to get a new one which took a day. Whats your least favorite thing about the gaming computer compared to a game console? It was much more difficult than going to the store and buying a console. How many hours do you play a week? I play about 16 hours a week. What type of prior knowledge is required before building your own computer? You have to know the parts you want, if they fit together, and how to put the parts and cords together.

Call of Duty has been around since its initial release in 2003. Since then, the creator, Ben Chichoski, has released 13 more in the form of Android apps and console games. Every year Call of Duty has won an award, but last year with its new release of Advanced Warfare we felt like it was a refresher to the Call of Duty franchise with improved graphics and better game play. The boys made a trip to Sante Fe Trails on Jan. 28, where they took on Osawatomie and Santa Fe. The squad put up a tough fight while dropping a close match against Osawatomie, 35-33, and losing to Santa Fe 45-22. The boys took the court against the Turner Bears on Jan. 30 while being a part of a good cause. At the end of the first quarter, they were ahead of the Bears 29-18 and withstood a Turner rally during the fourth quarter. Junior Aaron McGee had a good night, racking up 17 points, while junior Antonio Roark pitched in an additonal 15 points. The Braves ended the game with a 56-52 victory. —alyissa mendoza

Lady Braves tied for first paytonsechrist | staffwriter Currently tied for first in the KVL league play with Mill Valley, the Lady Braves are putting together a solid season. Last week was a particuarly intense stretch for the team. Not only did they play in Friday’s Pink Crush game, but also the next night at 5 p.m. in the finals of the Baldwin tournment where they lost 54-45 to place second. The Lady Braves were ahead by one point at the end of the third quarter, but Baldwin had a big fourth quarter, outscoring them 19-9. “They [Baldwin} are a really good team and I feel like we played some of our best basketball of the year. It was a very demanding week,” head coach Clay Oakes said. In the Cure game, the Lady Braves defeated Turner, 54-28. The starters were pulled after the

first half to rest up for the Baldwin tournament. Junior Miyah Hightower had a big night and swished three three-pointers in the second quarter which gave the team the big lead. The gym was filled with pink, screaming fans who also saw a victory from the varsity boys. “It’s always a special night to bring both communities together to raise money for something special,” senior basketball captain Caitlin Reed said. Stuco raised almost $3,000 dollars selling pink bandanas, necklaces and donuts along with “Coming Together for a Cure” pink and black T-shirts. Now it’s back to work for the Lady Braves. “When we win we celebrate and enjoy the victory but the next day its time to start preparing for our next opponent,” Oakes said.

On Jan. 29, the boys swim team hosted the Wyco Championships where they finished second behind Turner. The 400 free freestyle relay team of Ryan Downing, Jacob Kraus, Preston Landers and Nick Passinese qualfied for state and broke the school record by .17 seconds. All three relay teams have now qualified for state. Freshmen Downing and Passinese have qualified for state in every individual event they have competed in. “It is a lot of fun breaking all of these school records, and it feels like we have the best team Bonner Springs has ever had,” swim coach Preston Williams said. —payton sechrist

The Lady Braves opened up their season with a 54-39 win while the boys fell to the Bobcats, 67-46. What will the game mean for each team? The close proximity between schools makes for a natural rivalry that can get heated. For the 9-4 boys team, head coach Dan Streit says the game is all about getting the best seeding possible for substate. The 13-0 Bobcats will also be looking to extend their perfect season. For the 8-5 Lady Braves, it’s about taking care of business away from home if they want a share of the KVL title. Key matchups: The matchup that will be on center stage tonight will be shutting down senior Patrick Muldoon, a top area prospect. Streit said rebounding and not allowing second chances will be a key to victory. “You look at what you did good in the first game. Then look at the things you did wrong,” he said. Last week’s action: On the boys’ side, the Bobcats defeated the DeSoto Wildcats, 6643. The girls’ team lost to a Holton basketball squad that’s really playing well.

The game was even filled with drama and suspense before the sunday night kick off in Arizona. The New England Patriots were ready to claim their fourth franchise championship while the defending champion Seattle Seahawks were hoping to become the leagues’ new dynasty. As the opening ceremony took place, emotions began to flare.

Both quarterbacks had shaky first halves, with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady throwing two interceptions. New England took the lead headed into halftime until Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a touchdown strike to rookie reciever Chris Matthews trying the game at 14-14. The Patriots took over on the goal line, dethroning the previous Super Bowl champions in a display of extreme resilence and heart until time expired and they walked off the field as champions.
