Navigating High School Admissions The independent high school admissions process can be exciting and inspiring, while at the same time feel like a confusing and dizzying experience. Interviews, testing, recommendations, open houses -- it can be difficult to know where, when, or even how to start. With this road map you can start to plan and organize as you embark on the search for a high school that fits what you are looking for. Start by thinking about the first and most important question right now, wherever you are in your high school search: What are you looking for in a school? Take a moment to close your eyes and think about what you picture when you think of your ideal high school: Is it big or small? Do you want to go to a school close to where you live? How important is community to you? What does your ideal school value most? Do you work well in a traditional classroom, an experiential hands-on setting, a mix of styles? Is it important for you to have close relationships with teachers? What extracurricular activities -- sports, drama, writing, community service, clubs -- would you like to participate in? Ask yourself, “In what kind of school environment could I truly excel and thrive?”
