DIRECTOR NOTES The musical as we kno w it to day is a specifically American art fo rm. While its DNA co mes fro m the Euro pean o peretta, the Seco nd Age o f the American Musical (19 20 – 19 6 0 ) to o k it a step further. Flo Ziegfeld bro ught the musical revue fro m France to NYC – the grandeur o f spectacle and variety o f perfo rmances – exo tic music and mo vement, co mic, dramatic and highly cho reo graphed dance numbers with a bevy o f beautiful wo men. With the rise o f so me o f the greatest co mpo sers o f po pular so ng – The Gershwins, Jero me Kern, Co le Po rter and Ro dgers and Hart – theatre artists began to envisio n a new fo rm that bro ught the rhythm and style o f Jazz and Harlem to the mainstream. Perfo rmers like Fanny Brice, Al Jo lso n and the Marx bro thers bro ught heightened perfo rmance energy and characterizatio n to the stage. Like America, it was a melting po t o f influences brewing to gether to create so mething wo nderful. "The Dro wsy Chapero ne" started o ut as a sho rt spo o f o f 19 20 s musical styles, created fo r the bachelo r party o f Ro bert Martin and Janet Van De Graaf. Yes, they are real peo ple! Mr. Martin jo ined his bachelo r party friends who had imagined the wo rk, Do n McKellar, Lisa Lambert, and Greg Mo rriso n, as co -writer and o riginato r o f the “Man in the Chair” ro le. Nine years and many versio ns later, it arrived o n Bro adway in May 20 0 6 and led all musicals in To ny no minatio ns with 13! The sho w wo n five awards, fo r Best Bo o k o f a Musical, Best Sco re, Best Scenic Design, Best Co stume Design, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical. "The Dro wsy Chapero ne" is a lo ve letter to musical theatre harkening back to the era and style o f "Anything Go es," which we perfo rmed three years ago . A bo o kend, if yo u will, fo r the class o f 20 15 and a wo nderful way to welco me the class o f 20 18 .
