EDITOR IN CHIEF Dear Readers, Welcome to the First Edition of City Zenes Focus for the year 2016. The start of a new year traditionally signifies the handing over of office to the new board members who have got one year to lead. Each team of board members down the years have brought in innovation, passion, commitment and time to the organization. I’m sure we shall in the year 2016 stand on the shoulders of our past experienced members and take the organization to even greater heights. In 2015 we celebrated the 100 years of the JCI movement. Now we have to create a sustainable plan for the future so that in the next 100 years, the movement empowers even more active citizens and build a better world for all of us. City Zenes Focus is the promotion of our activities and projects the commitment of our enthusiastic and passion-driven members to create a positive change in the society. The first quarter of the year has already gone by in the blink of an eye. In the first three months, we have been creating a lot of impact. Let us all impact to inspire through our actions. Let us all be the change that we want to see in the society. I wish you all a very pleasant reading.

LOCAL PRESIDENT Dear Readers,

Greeting from the office of the 2016 JCI City Plus President!

Over the last eight years, Board Members, Members, Senators, Aspiring Members and Partners have rallied towards our goals in innumerable ways guided by the JCI Vision and Mission. It is important to thank all who worked over the past several years to build the JCI City Plus family. The progress from those efforts added to the strong foundation upon which we are now building.

As we step into the next 100 years of JCI, our objectives have been set for 2016 and now it is time to Impact to Inspire others to join us in our quest to become the leading organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. Impact to Inspire can be achieved through the continuous sharing of the JCI Story, the use of JCI Active Citizen Framework to run projects, running of ACF workshop to share the concepts and tools, provide trainings that will enable people to create sustainable impact and through collaboration which is the driving force to expand our impact and inspire others. I look forward to your continued support and insights as we embark on this exciting time in JCI City Plus’ history. I shall end up by quoting Chuck Palahniuk “All the efforts in the world won’t matter if you are not inspired”. Wish you a pleasant reading and immersion in the world of JCI City Plus.

I seize this opportunity to thank all those without whom this edition would not have been possible. Thank you to the Editor-In-Chief Ashish Padaruth for the wonderful job done together with the editorial team and thank you to Local Vice President Tasweena Girdhari for having met the objectives set and for her guidance to the Editorial team. IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT Dear JCI Friends, It is an honour and privilege for me to address you in this edition of City Zenes Focus after leading JCI City Plus for one year as the Local President. The year 2015 has been a year of celebration as we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement and I am sure all of you will remember this worldwide celebration. At local level, one of our main task was the implementation of the first strategic plan of our organization and with the support of all the members, senators and aspiring members, we successfully implemented the first year of the strategic plan. 2015 was a year full of achievements for our organisation. We successfully implemented our plan of action and we had a great administrative and financial stability over the year. We organized a mega fund raising over two days with an International DJ from Ibiza. Our JCI City Plus family grew during the year and we welcomed 13 new members. Through our community based projects, we positively impacted the lives of many individuals. With our Skills Development plan, we tried the best of our ability to empower you with the right skills to become young active citizens.

Our business essence has helped the advancement of entrepreneurship in our country. We had an effective public relations strategy and we were actively present in the media and online platforms. On the international side, we successfully finalized a twinning with JCI Luxembourg. The year 2015 has also been marked with the implementation of various innovative initiatives namely the Performance Management System, Mentorship Program and so on. We were also recognized by the 2015 JCI President for being one of the first local organization in the world which conducted a Project Impact 100 and one of our project was the winner of the Impact Month of June 2015. We also received two awards during the 2015 JCI Africa and Middle East Conference. During the 2015 JCI Active Citizens Day, we received 7 awards namely the Best Local Personal Skills Development Program, Best Local Growth and Development Program, Most Outstanding New Member, Most Outstanding Member, Most Outstanding Local Organisation, Most Outstanding Local President and 100% Efficiency Award. I would like to seize this opportunity to thank the 2015 JCI City Plus Board of Directors for their unfailing support and encouragement. They were always by my side and they worked very hard for our local organization to reach where it is today. I wish all the best to 2016 Local President Chimene Dacruz-Valery and 2016 Local Board Members. Let’s Impact to Inspire. Roumesh Oomah Immediate Past President iv

NATIONAL PRESIDENT D e a r Readers, It is a great honour to stitch a few words in the journey 'Impact to Inspire'.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) is willing to unite all sectors of society to find sustainable solutions to community needs through impactful projects. In order to create an Impact is not an easy job but possible. JCI has the Active Citizen Framework as a major asset to identify the root cause of problems, bring like-minded partners on a common platform and establish a plan of action to solve the problem/s. In the same line to Impact, there should be a change of mindset where simple individual is engaged and ready to work as a team, deeply involved to reflect and in taking the right decisions to bring forward the option/s to solve a problem to meet community needs The change of mindset from a simple individual to a JCI Members is also known as Young Active Citizens. And JCI provides you with all the tools and guidance to be a Young Active Citizen inculcating the knowledge as service to humanity is the best work of life. On the other side of the coin, deep inside you want to achieve things.

Then, one wake up one day and out of the blue saying to yourself, Yes...I want to do something for my community, I want to break away from my shyness and let go to achieve something I am worth of being or want to be remembered for. All of a sudden, destiny brings you to Junior Chamber International. The organisation which provide development opportunities that empowers young people to create positive change. You start to discover numerous ways in which you can contribute to your community and you feel self-satisfied in the good job done as a Young Active Citizen...You are Inspired. Then you start to Inspire others, just simply in the way you share your passion and what you do as a Young Active Citizen. And the eagerness to achieve more and be a proud JCI Member has slowly and unconsciously become a sweet virus for life. And this virus has no antidote, you just keep spreading it in each and every corner of your life. If you want to Impact think about how we can make Mauritius a better place. If you want to Inspire think in terms on how we can make the world a better place. And Mauritius will say to the World......Peace Is Possible. The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do. Kobe Bryant Yudhish Rama National President

INTERVIEW OF 2016 JCI VICE PRESIDENT SENATOR RYAD SUBRATTY in this organization, I feel that I have upgraded myself and that I distinguish myself from others because I am a JCI Member. For example, my professional life has radically changed for the better since I have joined JCI and the ripple effect of this has also benefitted my family and close ones. 3.You've achieved what few others have. What motivates you to grow and develop? JCI is the organization that provides us with loads of development opportunities and these lead us to impact the civil society positively. Our Senator Ryad Subratty mission itself drives my passion for the organization and this develops me to get better 1. What made you join JCI? and better every day. This year, I am assigned to eight countries which represents I came to know about JCI, approximately 40% of the commonly known as Jeune total membership of JCI Bio-Express Chambre Economique, in Africa & the Middle East. 2004 when I saw the award This actually represents a ceremony of TOYP in the ★Local President in 2006 big part of the global 19:30 news. I was impressed ★ National President in 2011 network that we are and a ★ Senator 70781 to know that it was JCI who ★ JCI Vice President in 2016 huge responsibility as a JCI was the organization that was Vice President. This also recognizing the Most drives my motivation to Outstanding Young Person of continue to develop myself Mauritius. I eventually joined JCI since I am moving around our continent to when I met the Local President of JCI Quatre spread our mission and motivate young active Bornes, Senator Didier Faydherbe, and he citizens to impact their communities. asked me to join in this fantastic organization. 2.How does being a JCI member impact your life? JCI has been the University of Life. With everything that I have learned and still learning 9

4.Can you name one person that had a t r e m e n d o u s i m p a c t o n y o u r l i f e ?
This person is not from JCI. It is my dear mother. She has been in community service for 33 years now and has been doing that as a full time job on a voluntary basis for more than 25 years. Her passion and dedication had a tremendous impact on my life. Despite of her hectic schedule, she has never failed in her responsibilities towards her family. She is still a dedicated daughter, a wonderful wife and the best mother ever. Yet she has impacted the community and is still doing so in anonymous manner without looking for recognition of any sort. 5.Can you name one obstacle that you've overcome during your JCI career? I had challenges but not obstacle. The biggest challenge that I had was to become National President of JCI Mauritius. I had to fight for two years to get to this position. The first time I was not elected, but the second time, I did go through despite I was running against two candidates. But even those challenges have provided me with other opportunities to further grow up and develop myself and those have led me to become the Most Outstanding Member of Africa & Middle East in 2011. 6.What is the biggest challenge facing us, JCI members, today?

I will talk in the context of members from JCI Mauritius. One of the challenges that we are facing is the positioning of JCI in the Mauritian society. JCI is still recognized as a community service organization despite we have moved away from that since long ago. Our organization needs to be recognized as the one which unites all sectors of the society to create sustainable impact. We are very far from this JCI Strategic position statement. If we look at the JCI Active Citizens Framework, the areas of opportunities have migrated to another dimension since we are now targeting our projects towards Economic Empowerment for instance. The biggest challenge for JCI Members is to rapidly re-align themselves to that position statement and together as organization impact the community in a true sustainable manner.

7.What would be your piece of advice to JCI members and aspiring members? One of the biggest asset of our organization is that we are a Global Network of Young Active Citizens. Through the development opportunities, we transform members that we recruit from the civil society to active citizens. This can be considered as a behavioral change as the normal citizen of the society has now the abilities to think, talk and act as a responsible citizen. However, this should not remain only a statement. We need to see this change in action and this should be reflected in the project that

10

our Local Organizations are doing. My advice to all members is to use all the tools that we have in JCI and to be audacious in our actions so that we can achieve sustainable impact and upgrade the status of our organization to the one that will unite all sectors of the society. Let JCI Mauritius glow as an example in this Global Network that we are part of.

NEW MEMBERS’ CORNER A dream coming true! Words are less to express the good feeling I had the day I became an aspiring member of JCI City plus. I m m e n s e thanks goes to my good friends Ashish Padaruth and R o u m e s h Oomah for having introduced me to this great organization like JCI which is a great platform to meet new, like minded positive people. Having volunteered myself, was mainly because I found something incredibly satisfying about acting in a way that is consistent with my principles.

has really inspired me to achieve social mission, becoming professionally self realized by exploring a variety of roles. The 3 months which elapsed, changed my life from being purely selfcentered to being something with meaning for others. I was deeply impressed to have the pleasure to have a high calibre team of truly fascinating and delightful individuals who shared the same vision. Moreover, I have been able to pursue my own interests in researching human rights and focusing on gender awareness projects through participation in the different projects like “Aret Taper” and Sexual abuse against children. It really thrilled me to have been given important responsibility in a short amount of time by being part of the banquet organization team for VP visit to Mauritius. I can with certainty say that my experience with JCI City plus has far exceeded my expectation. I am not flawless, not even the best, but if I can change something in this world, in the lives of others, this really gives meaning to my being here in JCI as beyond simply looking after myself I am already a “winner in life”. JCI is a global network of young people aged between 18 and 40 whose focus is to empower young people to make a positive change in their s o c i e t y. W h e t h e r t h i s i s t h ro u g h s e l f development, community projects, management and team leader opportunities or simply networking locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. JCI is a volunteer-led, NGO run by its members, for its members. Split into local chambers, each deliver their own set of projects, programmes, training sessions, networking events, business seminars and social events; all meeting quite routinely at regional, national and global events. In JCI I saw the potential to prove myself outside of the traditional 9-5, careerism approach and be part of something that I could grow and develop with at the same time. When I joined JCI, I was looking to meet some interesting new people, do some volunteering in the community and learn something new. I am getting so much more. Today I find myself involved in several projects and I am loving every second at JCI. JCI runs training session/ seminar and have routine social gatherings as well. But herein lies the best part; we can keep

growing! We can do whatever we want; we could arrange a business conference, start a local community movement, start a charity program, organise networking events and much more JCI is not a one-man band. We have a great council team and active members who are helping us deliver events and activities all year round. Through workshops, projects and organisational boards, members are able to gain practical experience not always available in their work environments. They can develop new skills outside their usual day-to-day experience, take on leadership positions years ahead of when they might be offered in the workplace and learn from people with different personalities, perspectives and experiences. Thanks to JCI I am a far more confident person with skills I never imagined I could master; I have met people who inspire me and I am proud to call them my friends, in fact I must say that JCI is a family. FUNDRAISING EVENT

“On the shores of Venice” After three months of tremendous hard work and dedication, the JCI City Plus Fundraising team, has the utmost pleasure of presenting you the Masquerade Night, “On the shores of Venice”. Fundraising remains one of the most important matters for the Treasury as it allows us to gather funds for our administrative expenses as well as for our projects. Being in charge of the Treasury matters, the organisation of the first Fundraising has been my toughest task so far. This journey has been a real roller coaster ride, with lots of ups and downs, yet enriching experiences. One thing for sure, never the days looked alike. From creativity to negotiating skills, you are constantly learning and developing new skills. The key of this outstanding work is TEAM spirit. I should admit, I have had amazing team members, who have dedicated themselves day and night to make this fundraising event a reality. Without, their support, this project would not have been what it is today. From WhatsApp messages to midnight calls, they have always been “a l’écoute”. I would really like to thank all my team members for each and every contribution they have made to this project.

“Why On the Shores of Venice?” The whole credit of this one goes to my PR and marketing team, led by Zeinah Zeadally. Known to have had organised some of the best fundraising events, we wanted to maintain the high level of standard of JCI City Plus. The team wanted to bring a whole new concept of fundraising event, with a dash of mystery. JCI City Plus is looking forward to having you all on the 8th of April at the 55 Lounge at Grand Bay La Croisette, for the Masquerade Night, “On the Shores of Venice” as from 22hrs onwards. People can move around. I may

JCI Creed is one of the wonderful inventions that I have seen. It is very philosophical. Above all I cherish the one that says ‘Service to Humanity is the best work of life’ . There’s nothing more noble than providing service to people. My growth in JCI can be attributed to my service. My continued passion and encouragement is due to the fact that I give service to others. There are times when I devote my time to go and train people living in villages. Those people might not be well off in terms of money but they are humble and they gratefully thank me for teaching them something. Service to humanity for me is service to members and everybody else is the best work of life. Q: What is your message for Non JCI Members? I would say there is no better education than going out there and doing community service. JCI has many young passionate people who want to create positive change in their communities. Come and try JCI. Universities give us education but JCI gives us the moment of realizing why we are alive.

NIPPON FOUNDATION NIPPON FOUNDATION The Nippon Foundation held a ceremony to deliver the Global Appeal 2016, a global call to eliminate prejudice and discrimination against people affected by leprosy, at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation Building in Tokyo on January 26 together with JCI. This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of the Japan’s repeal of the Leprosy Prevention Law, which for many years forced leprosy patients into isolation. To encourage people to think about leprosy, The Nippon Foundation launched the THINK LEPROSY NOW campaign in 2014. This public awareness campaign carries out educational activities to promote a correct understanding of leprosy. This year, World Leprosy Day has been observed on January 31, and a variety of events was held around that date, with the Global Appeal launch ceremony as the centerpiece. This year's launch ceremony was attended by approximately 250 persons, including people affected by leprosy and their families, medical professionals, and human rights leaders from around the world.

JCI President Paschal Dike who was also present, delivered a speech; “People affected by leprosy must be treated with the same human dignity as every other person on earth, and each one of us can play a role in ensuring that this disease is no longer a lifelong curse upon a family's outlook or life. I am proud to be here today to represent JCI members in nearly 5,000 communities around the world, and our commitment to ending discrimination against people affected by leprosy. As we take this step together today, we believe that there is more that can be done together, in overcoming the challenges that the world face, whether it is working together to promote peace in the world, or empowering young people with resources to play a more active role in community development.”

In addition to addressing both the medical and social aspects of the disease, the gathering also dealt with setting an agenda for “the future of leprosy.” 23

PEACE IS POSSIBLE CAMPAIGN

Peace is the ability to respect differences within our diverse global community, transcending the sovereignty of nations. Peace ensures human dignity and guarantees humanity is preserved for future generations. It is not just the absence of conflict, but also the prevalence of justice. In a world filled with violence, terrorism and injustice, to many the idea of peace has become merely just a vision as these unsettling acts c o n t i n u e t o a ff e c t i n n o c e n t p e o p l e i n communities around the globe. Violence serves as a reminder of how relevant and necessary peace is in today’s society. For that reason, the Peace is Possible campaign seeks to foster an environment where shared collaboration and open dialogue occur between all sectors of society, making peace more than just a vision — but a possibility. The campaign mobilizes young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate, take action and commit to an everlasting world peace. The worldwide adoption of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development is just one step toward achieving this peace. It will take the collaborative effort of active citizens everywhere, working to advance these 17 goals, to make peace possible.

The purpose of the campaign is to: 1.! Mobilize young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate, take action and commit to an everlasting world peace. 2.! Build a coalition of likeminded stakeholders from all sectors of society that are committed to the purpose. The mission of the peace coalition is to unite stakeholders from all sectors of society toward the mobilization of young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate, take action and commit to an everlasting world peace. The objectives of the coalition are: •! Unite ideas, resources and knowledge about projects and initiatives that make peace possible for local citizens, communities and countries. •! Facilitate increased dialogue, understanding and cooperation across nations, religions and sectors at the local, national and international level. •! Foster awareness, actions and advocacy amongst young people and their community worldwide for an everlasting world peace.
