Editor-In-Chief Message Hello, Buzz Readers! Warm greetings, I am thankful for the chance to chair the CITY BUZZ Newsletter for the first time. I hope you are having a sparkling start to the new year. Yes! Season 2 of Lockdown is upon us, but that is no reason to be unproductive or gain weight! Past 2020 local board members, who were the pioneers on the warpath of COVID-19, deserve applause for their flexible management, coordination skills, and positive attitudes. We have already begun a new century's adventure; let's make it Zabeen Jareehag 2021 Editor-in-Chief

happen together! Our unseen and ever-wanted enemy will not influence the ‘Calendar of Activity.'

What is City Plus without its members? In a changing world, I, you, and us working together toward the same beliefs and challenges to make a difference. Let the entire world know about the City Plus Family. I hope that 2021 will be a success and that all projects will contribute to the development of members, as well as community and national-level innovation. Members of the Local Board members and aspiring members BEST OF LUCK FOR 2021!

2021 LOCAL PRESIDENT MESSAGE "Dear Readers, Last year during my caucus, I referred to the speech of Theodore Roosevelt: “It “It is not the critic who counts…the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…who actually strives to the deeds and who spends himself to a worthy cause”. cause”.

Chrisinta Chavrimootoo 2021 Local president

This year, again, we have faced a lockdown. But this year, we were prepared. Our members fearlessly entered the arena and showed they were Active Citizens. Some of them found ways to provide food supplies to communities such as Cite Vallijee and Safe Haven Shelter. Some used their business networks to reach entrepreneurs facing difficulties. Some delivered training even to remote countries. All the while, we continued to support national flagship projects, such as The Outstanding Young Person Award, and national initiatives such as the JCI Covid-19 Response Committee. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our members take up development opportunities. Nothing makes me prouder than seeing those actions have an impact.

On behalf of JCI City Plus, I also convey our gratitude to all of our partners, including the frontliners out there. Since the beginning of the year, we have aimed to make JCI City Plus a home for all its members to grow. Together, we have initiated a number of actions to reinforce our brotherhood and bridge the gap between the more experienced members and the new generation. We have organised Game Nights, a Past Presidents’ Forum, and launched the new Mentorship Programme. As we continue to work on the growth of our organisation, I am privileged to serve a board of bright and committed members. I wish to thank them, as well as our members, senators, and aspiring members for their support and their work. By working as a team and capitalising on our respective strengths, I know we will Rise in Synergy. Synergy. Yours in JCI Spirit, Chrisinta Chavrimootoo"

2021 JCI Mauritius National President Philip Chang-Ko Message Greetings,

We can have it all carefully planned out, but in just a matter of days, we can see everything just turn upside down. Had I prepared my first article on time it would have been irrelevant in the actual context, In the span of one week, the country went in a full lockdown, and everyone restricted to their homes. However, I would like to commend the efforts of JCI City Plus, under the leadership of Local President Chrisinta Chavrimootoo and her board, to be quick to react and lead a frontal attack on the effects of Covid 19 on our country through the JCI Mauritius Covid 19 response committee. JCI City Plus has been active in the last past months, where we can see the leadership of 2021, kickstarting post covid initiatives; mainly the RISE initiative, connecting the different generations through forums with their Past Presidents as well fostering brotherhood through different initiatives such as the games night during the independence day celebrations and the fitness exercises which was organised at the start of the year. As goes the famous quote'' If you want to go fast go alone if you want to go far go together''. I would also like to salute the efforts of the Local President of being present in the various activities done at JCI Mauritius level, to strengthen its relations with other national organisations. We have already burnt through three months and we have to reach the end of 2021 together. Among its many challenges, this year, JCI City Plus will have the Olympian task of hosting the 2021 JCI Mauritius National Convention to make it a memorable one, as well as find ways to make it appealing to the members so that everyone can connect in the spirit of brotherhood. These past weeks are just a glimpse of what awaits us in 2021, and I wish all the best to the 2021 team, where together, we can turn these challenges into opportunities. Yours in JCI Spirit, Philip Chang-ko 2021 National President

JCI BEAU-BASSIN/ROSE HILL LOCAL PRESIDENT MESSAGE My name is Nabiil Bhankarally, 2021 local president of JCI BeauBassin/Rose-Hill. I joined the local organisation in June 2019. I learned about JCI from social media and from 2 colleagues at work, members of JCI Tunisia and JCI Edinburgh respectively. I have sworn in as an official member during 2019 JCI Active Citizen’s day and in 2020, I became local treasurer. Academically speaking, I am currently pursuing my master degree in International Business at Curtin University and I work as a Talent Acquisition Consultant for an International Consulting Company.

Nabiil Bhankarally JCI Beau-Bassin/Rose Hill 2021 Local President What has marked me so far in JCI is the brotherhood that exists among us. Despite the fact that we come from different local organisations, we all unite to make a difference and the team spirit prevailing within the COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee projects is a concrete example. My main focus is to boost the membership growth of our local organisation and to help JCI Mauritius on that mission as well. Project-wise, our main priorities this year are in line with JCI RISE initiatives [Post COVID-19 Career Fair, Sustainable Crop Cultivation and Mental Health]. I know that the position of local president is not an easy one but with the support of my board and members, I aspire to positively transform our local organisation this year as well as collaborating with the other local chapters to create positive change.

JCI CUREPIPE LOCAL PRESIDENT MESSAGE Dear Members, Senators, aspiring members and readers, Greetings! “When you feel like hope is gone, look inside you and be strong and you’ll finally see the truth, that hero lies in you” you” © Mariah Carey It’s an honor for me to address to you a few words for this very first Quarter of 2021. I am Satiam Gokool, I joined JCI in Feb 2015 and, in fact I quickly joined the board the year after i.e 2016 to be the Local Vice President responsible for membership and I have to be honest, I was just so hyped to be on the board that I didn’t know what I was getting into. I didn’t know anything about recruitment, let alone retention. It was the kind of task – just outside my comfort zone – that I liked to nervously embrace. Tasks like this reminded me that, whilst I might think I was good at my day job, there was a world of other skills out there to be mastered. My message is simple, make the most of your JCI journey, take risks, be crazy enough to take new challenges because the more you invest, the more you will get out of JCI. I’m amazed by the vibrant board of directors who took the reins this year and I have no doubt that they will make JCI City Plus “Rise “Rise with Synergy”. Synergy”. I have seen the passion, commitment and how hard working the members are, especially on the JCI Mauritius CRC Committees. I really look forward to the Post Wakashio Project at Cité la Chaux and Rise Up Business Series. On behalf of JCI Curepipe, we wish JCI City Plus all the best and we look forward for more fruitful collaboration together as well as the other local Chapters so that we can “Rise “Rise in Synergy”. Synergy”. We hope that we can continue building the already strong relations between our two local organizations in the future. I would also like to invite you to read our newsletter to understand better what JCI Curepipe did since the start of the year. Satiam Gokool JCI Curepipe 2021 Local President Choose OUTSTANDING

JCI PORT LOUIS LOCAL PRESIDENT MESSAGE Ashley Muthoora, bank employee at the Development Bank of Mauritius Ltd since 2001 and seconded for duty at DBM Financial Services Ltd (a subsidiary of DBM Ltd) as from 2015. My journey with JCI Port Louis started back in 2008, after successfully fighting for the wellbeing of retired racehorses. Working on various projects with JCI Port Louis helped me in my personal growth. In 2011, due to professional reasons, I took a break. I made one of my childhood dreams come true in 2016 by owning, raising up, educating, and taking care of a horse.

Ashley Muthoora JCI Port Louis 2021 Local President

With few years to go as a JCI member, in 2019, I thought that it was time to return the favour to the organisation, which contributed a lot to my personal development. However, circumstances made me Local President for 2021.

Our main objectives are: 1.Reconstruction of the organisation (Recruitment, Retention and succession planning) 2.Clearing of all pending issues. In terms of projects: 1.We are working on some project ideas in line with the rise. 2.Continue the poverty alleviation program. 3.And some low costs community development projects with different stakeholders. 4.Provide training to the new recruits.

JCI QUATRE-BORNES LOCAL PRESIDENT MESSAGE It is an immense pleasure for me to address a message to JCI City Plus. I am from Madagascar and working here in Mauritius as a Software engineer. I had the chance to join JCI Mauritius around June 2019. As an aspiring member, my first challenge was a small project called Photography Training. We wanted to improve members' skills at taking quality photos using only smartphones. The goal at the time was to market better our brand using good photos.

Mariot Betombo JCI Quatre Bornes 2021 Local President

Then I took the responsibility of Local Vice President in 2020, as part of which I was in charge of a big project called Local Business App. The Objective of the project is to help small business to have more visibility. With the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdown that comes with it, the project can be a great help for them.

As JCI Quatre Bornes, I know one thing about JCI City Plus, their members love doing Business and are humanitarians. And They are doing outstanding jobs. And I am looking forward to work with them. We come from different chapters but we are all under JCI, with the same vision and mission. And I think what makes us JCI is the bond that we share. At JCI, really the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations. My final message is: You are already doing a good job, keep going !!

2021 JCI City Plus Immediate Past President Message Dear City Buzz Readers, Despite all the odds last year I am proud JCI City Plus managed to shine at so many levels thanks to the tremendous work done by the Local Board and Members. This year as I embark on a new challenge as 2021 National Vice President, I really wish to find a common platform to unite the National and Local Organisations as well as the Community. The past year had been hard for all of us and the least we expected was to have to face a second wave. Jaya Mulloo 2021 National Vice President

I am proud to see that JCI Mauritius along with the 5 Local Organisations are finding ways to work for a common goal the betterment of our society.

Having been part of the Vaccination Team in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness I know the painstaking tasks that the Medical Staff have to face. My most sincere thoughts, therefore, go to our fellow frontliners who are working beyond their means to ensure that the rest of the community does not feel the burden of this pandemic, at least not to the extreme. I would seize the opportunity to wish goodluck to all the JCI Members and count on their support and participation to make JCI Shine!

Meet our 2021 LOCAL BOARD MEMBERS As active citizens, even though we are in a situation of not being able to go end meet people in need, we have been able to help. Sensitisation campaigns, online forums discussions, training, etc... are things that are being done but are they enough? The Covid19 Pandemic can be vanquished only by uniting with every stakeholder to find a solution. And with the help of technology, I am sure we can achieve this. Even though we are locked up with the fear of what will be our future we must think and act positively. This leads us to the famous quote by Steve Jobs “Let’s “Let’s go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday”. yesterday”.

2021 LOCAL TREASURER l'doumben Venkatakisten

2021 LOCAL SECRETARY Preshan Kissoondoyal

My wishes for 2021 are that JCI City Plus (Mauritius) keep shining and that we have more manpower to help us on our projects. The Board has been working relentlessly but we need the manpower to help JCI City Plus (Mauritius) sail through and hence my wish is to see our members, aspiring members, and more young people outside JCI join hands with us. The challenges are here as our country has never been gnawed by so many problems but it is not the time to sit on our laurels and complain. So, let us be more active so that we can really say at the end of 2021 that we helped create that POSITIVE CHANGE! CHANGE! "

When we look at others, what do we see? Do we see individuals or do we see age, gender, religion, disability… I see a whole human being unlike any other, a person of inborn value, gifted with talents, passions, and strength that are irreplaceable. Instead Instead of seeing different viewpoints as a threat, I fervently seek to learn from YOU. Once we understand each other fully, we are in a position to go for Synergy, to find a solution that is better than anything we can come up alone rapidly and creatively. Even in our conflicted times, now and again, let us catch a glimpse of the better thing.

FOCUS CORNER: Meet Lucia, our frontliner Lockdown season 2 is no rest for everyone. Meet Lucia our Frontliner and Member. As a frontliner, I remember vividly the way I panicked when the first Covid 19 wave hit in 2020. My husband and I asked a good friend of mine to take care of our 2 daughters as we could not phantom the risk of exposing them to the virus. Those were the days when people in some parts of Europe were dying in thousands per day. Today, with the efforts of various stakeholders in the health care sector, the picture is not as dark and gloomy as it was then.

Lucia Mazvita Marire. (RN) Member

We continue to be hopeful for positive outcomes especially with the rolling out of the vaccination programme.

During the first wave, there were a lot of stigmas that people who tested positive for Covid-19 faced. Somewhere isolated not only physically but also virtually as their loved ones shunned them like a plague. This inhumane behaviour moves me to appeal to everyone reading this article to reach out to a loved one who tested positive for Covid 19 or was exposed and checks on them regularly. I recently lost a very close friend and this lockdown made it impossible to travel for her funeral. It affected my grieving process and impacted me psychologically and emotionally. Yet, I still need to be there for my patients and give them my best. As such, I cannot over-emphasise the importance of providing psychological, emotional, and spiritual support to loved ones in quarantine and isolation. For without these, the effect of isolation and quarantine becomes worse than the virus itself on the infected and affected persons. Mental health challenges are real especially in these challenging times and no one deserves to struggle alone. Let us support each other. Together we can get through this! My prayer is that God continues to strengthen the JCI City Plus family that we may be a blessing to the community we serve. To the frontliners, Bon courage à Tous. To all who tested positive, I am rooting for you in prayer for a complete recovery.

Pourquoi?! Pourquoi tant de négativité?!
