Dear City Buzz Readers It gives me great pleasure to share a few words with you on this 2nd e-newsletter. Half a year in the shoes of the 11th President of JCI City Plus has been quite a challenge for me – It is an experience that makes or breaks you. Juggling between professional life, family life and JCI is not an easy feat and finding the right balance is essential. In this quarter, I’ve seen members rise and shine, unchartered potential tapped and I take the opportunity to thank all members and aspiring members who’ve contributed to the success of our projects and fulfilment of our mission – to provide development opportunity for young people to create positive change. We are also making good progress on reviewing our Constitution which has been unchanged for the past decade and I take the opportunity to thank the Local Constitution Review Committee Chair Varsha Boodhoo and the committee members for the hard work. JCI City Plus is growing from strength to strength with the support of its committed members and I re-iterate a call for members and aspiring members to shoulder responsibilities as active citizens of Mauritius and exemplary leaders. We have an open policy during the Members Corner section of our Members’ meeting whereby members and aspiring members can pitch for projects and make recommendations to the board. On an ending note, I would like to thank the board of directors and committee members of JCI City Plus for supervising the respective projects and their continued support despite turbulences. Special thanks goes to the 2017 JCI City Plus Board of Directors led by Tasweena Girdhari for winning the Award for “Best Local Growth & Development Program”. Quarter 3 is a challenging one with several projects lined up – Give in your time and you will be rewarded in ways you will only realize at a later stage. You hold the button to Ignite Your Potential. Yours in Active Citizenship, Pavan Gopal 2018 Local President JCI City Plus

Dear JCI Friends, It is an honor and privilege for me to address you as the 2018 JCI Mauritius National President in the second edition of JCI City Plus newsletter for the year. We have already reached half of the year and we are very glad to see the sustainable impact being created by JCI City Plus. JCI City Plus has in the last quarter been able to connect with different partners in order to create positive change in the society. We are pleased to see all the projects being conducted by JCI City Plus, namely the Ignition Corner, the Ediker pu Eradiker: Dibout pu to Drwa session in collaboration with Mafubo Mauritius at Ste Catherine Community Centre and the second edition of the Netoye Nu Paradis project. During the same period, JCI City Plus has hosted the 2018 JCI Mauritius The Outstanding Young Person Award, whereby we received 47 applications for this year’s edition. On behalf of JCI Mauritius, we would like to thank JCI City Plus for having successfully hosted the 32 nd Edition of this National Flagship project and we would like to thank our main partners MTML and Omnicane for their support. In the month of May, we had the 2018 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference in Cotonou, Benin. We would like to seize this opportunity to congratulate JCI City Plus for winning the award for the Best Local Growth & Development Program and for being nominated for the Best Local Personal Skill Development Program and Best Local Economic Development Program. In the remaining months of the year, we will continue to build on the achievements since the beginning of the year and we shall kick-start the preparation of our strategic plan and we will continue the good work which is being done to welcome the JCI Family in Mauritius next year for the 2019 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference. We would like seize this opportunity to thank JCI City Plus for its continuous support and we look forward to your impactful projects and activities. We are confident that with your support. we will surely GO BEYOND. Yours in Active Citizenship, Roumesh Oomah 2018 National President JCI Mauritius
An inspiring afternoon with the 2018 JCI Vice President Asha Auckloo What has been your biggest learning between serving in a local JCI context versus serving in on African or a regional JCI stage? I would simply say serving as JCI Vice President for Africa and Middle East this year has given me the opportunity to share experience that I have gathered during my JCI Journey serving at Local Level. Assisting, guiding, empowering and listening to members is the only way I can serve in my actual capacity. The power of the organisation lies in the members who are working with their respective community and creating sustainable impact. My best learning path till now as JCI vice President is seeing members in my assigned countries despite the infrastructural or financial challenges are motivated and committed to work together to impact their community. Many people know about the positive impact of JCI but they may not necessary know about the difficulties faced in achieving this impact. Could you describe some of the hurdles that you have personally faced in your JCI career. Obstacles are the best teachers, and I would like to seize this opportunity to thank the hurdles that came across my JCI career as it helped me grow into the person I am today. As goes the saying ‘what does not kill you makes you stronger’, I have always believed in JCI as a platform for personal development. Opportunities will always come, but seizing these opportunities also means having challenges these can be between JCI members, or during projects but the most important thing is to be guided by the Vision and Mission of the organisation. I would rather share what I have learnt rather than the hurdles faced. As an aspiring member I have learnt to listen and respect experienced members, as a team member I have learnt how to value each one’s contribution, as a leader I have learnt that friendship and leadership are not the best friends as being a leader in JCI , we have one year to lead so either we focus on making it or failing it by not taking proper actions, we are accountable to members and without members there is no leader, as a JCI Vice President , I am listening and valuing our organisation for the development opportunities and the impact being created at community level where JCI members are really tackling community challenges. Do you have any memorable or stand out moments during your time in JCI that you would like to share with our readers. This could be any funny, weird or sad moment. I have got plenty but just wanted to share one of the projects that was recognized as most outstanding project at JCI Africa and Middle East in 2017 – the ABC of investing in Stock Exchange. Well it started in 2014, where this project was one in my plan of action as Local President in 2014. The team was having difficulty foe securing sponsorship and we were going to scrap the project in a board meeting. Then during that meeting Senator Veena, also our founder member motivated to the team and the board of directors. We did secure sponsorship from Lions Club of Ebene whom I seize to thank again. We did this project at even if we had the minimum and we had to review our budget and expenses. A project starting with a minimum sponsorship, created the impact at Africa level after years. For me it is memorable as we just need a genuine initiative, committed team members and sustainability to create impact that JCI wants us to achieve. What do you think JCI needs to maintain its status as a leading NGO in Mauritius. All existing five local organisations working as a team - JCI Mauritius.
Getting personal with Chrisinta Chavrimootoo My first real encounter with JCI occurred as I attended JCI City Plus’ Past Presidents’ talk, organised as part of its 10th Anniversary celebrations. Out of the numerous enlightening remarks made by them, one of them stuck with me, ‘Know why you’re joining and it should be for the good reasons’. As I joined the TOYP team, with its dose of stress and late nights, those words kept echoing and I was lucky enough to find them resonate not in JCI members’ words, but actions. Having now worked on a number of ambitious projects such as TOYP, CYEA, ABC Stock exchange and being on City Plus’ CARCOM committee, I now understand the values of JCI and its members better. It still amazes me to see what these committed young professionals can achieve just by giving some of their time for free and joining their forces. As I write about my experience, I reflect back on the reasons why I have joined JCI: to find inspiration and to the best of my abilities, to walk the talk. If my short experience is any indication of what my journey with JCI will be as a newly sworn-in member, then I can safely say that it is going to be an inspiring walk ahead. Thank you! When you were a kid did u used to play with barbies and invent stories of your barbies in a Barbie house? Guilty of being a girly girl. Although I have to say, I used to build a whole residential complex for my dolls. My brother's heroes would sometimes join in for tea. Needless to say, he was not happy. ‘’I'm a barbie girl’’ is the best song in the world. What is your opinion? Let's be honest, who in our generation doesn't know the lyrics by heart! Then we grow up and realize the song is not as sweet as it sounds. The scariest part? *Whispers 'the song is 20 years old...
Elveena Yessoo The Co-Project Director of JCI City Plus flagship project “The ABC of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius What is your favourite part of being a JCI member?
“It’s about the people.” When I initially joined JCI as an aspiring member, I did not quite understand how JCI was different from other NGOs. The first project I worked on was The ABC of Investing in the Stock Exchange. Despite the many challenges of the project, the Project Director Alisha Hingun was always upbeat, dedicated and willing to go the extra mile to make the project a success. I remember asking Alisha how come she is this invested in JCI and she told me “JCI isn’t just about the projects. It’s also about the people and the connections you make.” Now, after being a member for almost a year, I’ve finally come to understand just what she meant. People are the core of JCI. While projects are central to JCI’s mission, it’s the people who bring JCI’s mission to life. Through JCI projects and events, I was able to meet, work and learn from people of diverse backgrounds. This has definitely become my favourite aspect of being a JCI member and I believe that it’s by having exchanges, sharing of ideas and discussions with different people that we can truly bring about positive change.
A chat with Aspiring member Ashmi Nuckchady
Where did you hear about JCI and what do you want to take from the organization? I first heard about the JCI from a friend who is a member of this organisation. Whilst reading more about it, I was very impressed by the organisation’s objectives, culture, beliefs and projects. It brings like-minded young people together, not only at national level but also internationally, to actively participate in a panoply of activities and organise events that enable us to make a positive impact on the society. The projects are carefully designed to help us identify and better understand the social problems around us and how to address them whilst at the same time providing us with opportunities to develop set of skills that will help us grow both personally and professionally. The seminars and trainings organised by the organisation are equally commendable. Moreover, the JCI provides a platform for networking and bringing down artificial barriers among people.
I am currently working on a project called “The ABC of Investing in the Stock Exchange which is a workshop aiming at, with the support of inspiring key note speakers, raising the level of awareness on the financial investment in stocks. Being from a legal background professionally, this is a new topic for me and by actively participating in this project, I am getting the valuable opportunity to get an insight into a field that is otherwise foreign to me, but yet very interesting. I certainly look forward to participating in many more such projects. It is no doubt a privilege to be part of such an impressive institution that has international reputation and presence in so many countries globally.

Sharing Experience with the 2018 JCI Mauritius The Outstanding Young Person Project Director
STEPPING INTO YOUR LEADERSHIP SELF – AN INNER CHALLENGE Everyone knows that one of the most challenging flagship project of JCI Mauritius is the JCI Mauritius TOYP awards – but I still decided to take the project as Project Director. I thought that it would be a great development opportunity for me to lead this national project. Turns out to be right – I did not only completed a project, I stepped into a leadership role that enabled me to discover more about myself. In JCI, we believe that earth’s great treasure lies in human personality and in the 2018 JCI Mauritius TOYP team, I met outstanding personalities – and it was not just the participants from the competition – my team members became my greatest allies. They shone with their own individual sparks and steered the project to good harbor. I would therefore like to recognize once again my team members for their valuable support to make this project happen – thank you Jivesh Tulsidas, Trisha Mukool, Anisha Gopal, Elveena Yessoo, Vidhish Beeharry, Tejasweeni Burumdoyal, Richard Anodin, Carolyn Louise and Chrisinta Chavrimootoo. I could not have brought this project to this level without the support of my Local President, Pavan Gopal – so I would like to say thank you, thank you, thank you. I am also grateful to the National Board members for the support on this project and would thus like to thank National Treasurer Chimene Dacruz-Valery, Deputy National President Heveen Kejiou and National Vice President Philip Chang-Ko. Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge the support of the National President Roumesh Oomah on the project throughout. The Winner for this 32nd edition of JCI Mauritius TOYP was finally announced during the Awards Night at Outrigger Resort & Spa, Mauritius on Saturday 02 June 2018. As Winner, we have Dr. Heman Mohabeer (nominated in the category of Scientific and/or technological development) as our "Nu Zeness Nu L’inpiration" followed by Mrs Ranini Cundasawmy (1st Runner-Up and nominated in the category of Personal improvement and/or accomplishment) and Mr Anil Singh Rana (2nd Runner-Up and nominated in the category of Academic Leadership and/or accomplishment). Do you like football and what is your opinion about girls complaining to their bfs and wife's complaining to their husbands about not giving them attention during the world cup? I think football is a social game that unites many people through one passion. I'm not particularly a fan but I love the enthusiam of the World Cup. About couples complaining about not getting attention of their partner due to the World Cup matches, I think it we should just share the fun. Watch the matches together. :)
Coffee with Dr Hemant Mohabeer, 2018 JCI Mauritius TOYP Winner How was your experience of participating in the TOYP award and how do you think winning the TOYP award has and will contribute to your career? I heartily thank JCI and its sponsors for creating such a great event that allowed young talents to participate and demonstrate our abilities. This event has allowed persons including me to display our competence in different arenas. It was an enriching experience that allowed us to share our knowledge and enhanced our relational skills and personal traits. The TOYP is a very good way of encouraging our youth to engage in a never-ending learning experience and to exhibit our knowledge. Its demands countless efforts and perseverance and doubtless, we all are winners at the end of the journey. Winning this award among so many talented people was an honour. It helped me to get more visibility and has allowed people to understand a domain which will be governing many fields in the future. The TOYP award has put in the limelight my contribution in this field and concomitantly has upsurge my passion and is encouraging me to further research unexplored parts of this topic of AI, which is currently the buzzword. In addition, winning this award has enabled me to build a solid networking with different professionals. I am getting the privilege to participate in various events where I can share my findings and consequentially helping people to understand how AI can make a significant impact in furthering Mauritius as a technological hub. I am honoured to be the winner and look forward to promote and implement AI so as to make an impact on our society. So far, my career has taken an interesting turn. Since AI is on the edge to be the next ‘big thing’ in Mauritius, I feel more confident that my contribution will not go unnoticed and I shall invest in twice as much effort to develop new ideas. JCI and the TOYP is a gateway to uncover hidden talents in our country. It inspires people to believe in themselves and to thrive and I believe that We can always succeed if given the right platform and opportunity. I conclude with the following motto “If you succeed only three times out of ten, then try hundred times. Your success rate will be thirty”.
Are you Hollywood guy or a Bollywood guy? And Julia Roberts or Dipika Padukone who would you take on a date and why? I would take Deepika Padukone as she is younger...:) But I am a hollwood guy.. a big fan of avengers (iron man) for obvious reasons..:)( his AI)
