EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Dear Readers, It is with immense pleasure that we are presenting to you the third Edition of the JCI City Plus newsletter. 2015 has been a year of celebrations for all Jaycees around the world. Since 1915, many young men and women have taken their first steps to become active citizens by joining Junior Chamber International. As we are nearly coming to the end of 2015, it is timely to reflect upon the changes, challenges and developments encountered by JCI City Plus. The year began with the priority of taking the organization to greater heights. We can now surely look back with pride and enumerate the accomplishments JCI City Plus made over the year. The 2015 Local Board members, members and aspiring members really took a bold step in the adoption of the motto: “Act to Impact”. We, however, recognize that more needs to be done and we are sure that the 2016 JCI City Plus Board of Directors will take the organization to even greater heights. Eventually, I would like to thank my dedicated editorial team for having been of unwavering support throughout the whole year. “More can be done from people working together than a bunch of individuals trying to outdo each other.” Long live JCI! Let’s continue to Act to Impact!

LOCAL PRESIDENT Dear JCI Friends, It is an honor for me to address you as the 2015 JCI City Plus President in the third edition of City Zenes Focus (JCI City Plus’s Newsletter) for the year 2015. It is already four months since we released our second newsletter and in these four months we have been completing many projects and activities, prepared our succession plan, increased our public relations, increased our social and corporate networks and we were also blessed by a lot of good news. The ‘Learning Made Easy’ project of JCI City Plus has been selected as one of the top Impact Projects for the Impact Month of June 2015. JCI City Plus is indeed privileged for being among the four Local Organisations in the world to have received this recognition from 2015 JCI President Ismail Haznedar and the Special Recognition Committee for our hard work and dedication to creating impact in our community. The major event for the last past months, has been the visit of the 2015 JCI President Ismail Haznedar to Mauritius during which JCI City Plus had the opportunity to host the 2015 JCI President Banquet and Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement. We also had the opportunity to make 2015 JCI President Ismail Haznedar visit the Nicolay Government School, whereby he distributed school materials to the students.
As at October 2015, we have completed approximately 78% of the 2015 JCI City Plus Plan of Action and implemented approximately 75% of the strategic actions identified for the year 2015 in the 2015-2018 JCI City Plus Strategic Plan. In the month of October 2015, JCI City Plus had welcomed 8 new members to our family and with the 13 new members recruited during the year, we attained a recruitment rate twice as planned. During the year 2015, we have Act to Impact and we have been doing a brilliant job during the year. It was great to see the dedication and motivation of the board members, members, senators and aspiring members. We have been working as a team to bring our Local Organisation to new heights. In the month of September, during the Extraordinary General Assembly, we had the opportunity to elect the 2016 JCI City Plus Board of Directors which we are confident will take our organization to even new heights and we will surely Impact to Inspire. I would like seize this opportunity to thank all the board members, members, senators, aspiring members and partners of JCI City Plus for their continuous support. Thank you very much!

NATIONAL PRESIDENT Konichiwa JCI City Plus. It is an honour to send you this small message on my way to 2015 JCI World Congress, in Kanazawa, Japan. As JCI members all over the world gather for an exceptional 100 years congress, it announces the kicking off of the year 101 of our JCI movement. 2016 is only a few weeks away and there exists no better way of starting a new endeavour than planning it in advance. Sharping the axe before cutting the tree is a vital aspect of the survival of any movement. This is why, for the next few months, at all levels of our organisation, international, national and local officers will be focusing on creating sustainable impact, in sincere continuity with the past years. Allow me to seize this opportunity to thank your organisation for showing great participation at the 2015 JCI Mauritius General Assembly. We met with some challenges while organising it and though we hold only an assembly instead of a convention, we are grateful for the understanding shown by your members. JCI Mauritius is privileged to announce the election of the 2016 National Board with four members from your local organisation. Congratulations to those daring souls. We wish them all the best in meeting our expectations. In a few days time, the next JCI Executive Board will be elected and after nearly 8 years now, JCI Mauritius will have a candidate for the post of JCI Vice President in the name 2011 National President Ryad Soobratty. We hope for the best and that this will ignite a revived sense for international in the heart of JCI Mauritius members. As I take the plane to Nagoya airport, I cannot resist sharing with you my feeling of loneliness and my eagerness to see many more members to JCI conferences. May you be blessed by a fruitful November!!!

28TH JCI JAPAN ACADEMY The 28th JCI Academy was held in Tokyo, Japan from the 2 to 10 of July 2015 where there was the participation of 178 delegates f ro m a ro u n d the world and JCI Japan. The movement started from one young citizen's realisation of the core. 100 years have elapsed, celebrations are flowing around the world and now more than ever it is time to look back upon our past achievements and pursue the core. JCI Members have been initiators of various projects showing their commitment and will a s " Yo u n g A c t i v e Citizens" in bringing positive change in society. Tokyo chosen as host city is the pride of Japan, the city leading to further achievements and compared to other cities of the world, it is one of the true pioneers of integrating cultures and civilisations. Therefore, the theme chosen for this par ticular academy was "Vanguard" which linked the Japanese culture and leadership philosophy and the revival of the core of the JCI Movement.
As from 2016, JCI wants its members to bring meaningful projects that will meet community needs and also focus in providing development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. Moreover, we will have to bring a change of mindset and convince people to join the JCI Movement as the global network of young active citizens that's unite all sectors of society in bringing everlasting peace around the world. Let’s reflect about the role of JCI Mauritius in 2016 and in the years to come, let’s inculcate the spirit of Vanguards to our members who will come at the far front to lead and produce more young active citizens. JCI Mauritius Members, what legacy you want to leave behind? We have a strategic plan. It's called "doing things"! Herb Kelleher Yudhish Rao Rama 2015 Deputy National President

2015 JCI MAURITIUS PUBLIC SPEAKING CHAMPIONSHIP This year, JCI Quatre-Bornes has been entrusted the responsibility of organizing the 2015 JCI Mauritius Public Speaking Championship, one of the National Flagships projects. The Championship was held on Saturday 8th August 2015 at the Municipal Council Room of Port-Louis with the theme: “Earth’s great treasure lies in human personality”.
“Winning the 2015 JCI Mauritius Public Speaking Championship is just like a blessing in disguise.”
We are all gifted. But, we have to discover that god given gift, uncover that gift, nurture that gift, develop it and use it for a proper mission. The 2015 JCI Mauritius Public Speaking Championship organised by the JCI Quatre Bornes has been a very challenging journey for me with indeed potential and experienced candidates. I feel very lucky to have participated in this well organised competition that has helped me rediscover and realise my potential and capacity. The Speak-up training and the useful Presenting Tips explained by Senator Aruna Pulton has been very enriching and helpful. I just can't stop admiring my trophy. ASPIRING MEMBERS’ CORNER I had my first encounter with JCI at the JCI CityPlus Members’ Meeting in April 2015, following the recommendation of a colleague. As a young person, I believe it is one’s duty to give time for the community but I also believe that it has to be a win-win situation where the efforts spent would also be opportunities for self-development and selfimprovement. In this respect, JCI is most suited for me. My first encounter was very positive – I found the members of JCI City-Plus to be very friendly and enthusiastic. I greatly appreciate this atmosphere of brotherhood which is encouraging, especially for aspiring members. Almost immediately, I seized the opportunity to participate in the 2015 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship, along with Nidhi Servansingh and Ashish Padaruth, where we were the first runner-up. I have attended many events, including a team-building with JCI at Talents and acting as a hostess in TOYP. Currently, I am the Project Secretary of the ACF Workshop, and whilst the role can be challenging, I appreciate the skills that I am acquiring which will also be helpful in my professional career. My aspiration is to live up to the core values of JCI and to bring in my share of contribution to the community. Varuna Govinden
I was first introduced to JCI City Plus in May 2015 by my sister Varuna Govinden. I was interested because JCI is a pathway for young people to achieve their goals. Mt first thought of JCI was that it was an organization which was involved in social work. However, I soon learnt that social work is only one of the many projects organized by JCI. JCI is a university that encourages people to accomplish positive actions, which will benefit everyone. I have had the occasion to participate in the charity program for the homeless, organized by one of the members on 27 June 2015. It was extremely fun to watch everybody giving a helping hand to cook food and pack the food. TOYP, which rewarded active citizens, was glamorous. It was great to learn and know about the active citizens, who were being rewarded, as well as seeing everyone dressed in their best clothes and having the many beautiful ladies smiling at you. I currently form part of the Active Citizens Framework (ACF) workshop with Project Director Geetanjali Ramkishore. Up to now my experience has been wonderful. I hope that my journey with JCI will be a fruitful one and that I can do more to create positive change through JCI. Vijayen Govinden 8
