D
ear President Iris, Past Presidents, Senators and fellow members,
F i r s t o f a l l , I wo u l d l i ke to congratulate JCI East Kowloon for winning the Outstanding Progressive LOM award in 2015. Th i s l a i d d ow n a ve r y g o o d foundation for your chapter’s development. I would like to s h a re m o re a b o u t h ow to grasp “Opportunity”. We always hear young people nowadays c o m p l a i n i n g t h a t t h ey l a c k opportunities. So, should we wait for opportunities to come to us or should we create opportunities by o u r s e l ve s ? Why d o s o m e people have many opportunities but not others?
3
C u r r e n t l y, t h e e c o n o m y o f Hong Kong is good and the u n e m p l o y m e n t ra t e i s l o w. However, many companies cannot recruit talents even by offering an attractive salary. So, there are various opportunities around us; the problem is whether you can
see it or not. Also, have you clearly demonstrated your strengths and value so that other people know what opportunities to give to you? To grasp oppor tunity when it arises, you need to constantly e q u i p y o u r s e l f. O n c e y o u r horizons have been broadened, yo u w i l l s e e m a ny p o s i t i ve changes in yourself; your confidence will increase, your personal networks will deepen, a n d yo u r p ro b l e m s o l v i n g abilities will be enhanced. You will be able to see opportunities that others fail to recognize. So, you should ask for and treasure every development opportunity in Junior Chamber International and try to tackle as many difficult problems as possible. One day, you will find that you possess a higher ability than your peers and many opportunities will be available to you. This publication records many opportunities that JCI East Kowloon offers. I’m impressed by
the creative ideas used for every training and fellowship gathering. Your flagship project “Family Harmony” is also very meaningful. I still remember last year, you promoted the “Read Together, Family Forever!” Campaign in Domain Mall and more than 1 5 0 p a re n t s a n d ch i l d re n participated. Their smiles are still deeply engraved in my mind. I really appreciate your efforts and please, continue to make our Hong Kong better! “Be All We Can Be” is the theme o f J C I H o n g Ko n g i n 2 0 1 6 . I hope that all of you will see problems as challenges, believe t h a t e ve r y t h i n g i s p o s s i b l e , humbly learn from experienced members, and proactively equip yourselves. Then, you will soon be able to make your dreams come true. On behalf of JCI Hong Kong, I wish JCI East Kowloon all the best and that she reach another new height under the leadership of President Iris. “Your Passion, Your Uniqueness”
t is my great honor to be the National Assigned Executive Officer of JCI East Kowloon in 2016. I am delighted to be warmly welcomed by JCI East Kowloon members in many occasions. From what I see JCI East Kowloon is an energetic chapter where all members have close bonding and are active citizens who have fostered positive changes in Hong Kong for over 35 years. Projects such as “Family Harmony”, “Key to Success”, and “Build a Backpack” not only address important issues that many Hong Kong people are facing on a daily basis, but these projects also provide development opportunities to her members to encourage them to have critical thinking and be creative during execution. Though I see that there are still rooms for improvement in these projects, in 2016 under the leadership of passionate President Iris Lam and a strong cabinet with unique talent just like their slogan “Your Passion, Your Uniqueness”, JCI East Kowloon will definitely create great impacts to the society and continue the legacy of past presidents. To live an unforgettable year, having a dream and setting a target is not enough, making your dream come true and reaching your target by carrying each step through execution is also very crucial. Wish JCI East Kowloon keep growing and her members exhibit their full potential in the year 2016.

016 just begins! Have you come up with your year plan yet? If yes, congratulations and wish you a successful implementation of the plan. Channel is the name of our regular publication. The main theme connecting 2016 Channels is “Hong Kong Spirit”, with four sub-themes signifying the respective stages we are and will be in. We believe people with Hong Kong Spirit pay efforts to create betterment for Hong Kong. In our coming cover stories, we will invite guests from all walks of lives to share with readers their unique ways to embody such spirit. We adopt travel as the first sub-theme of our 2016 publication, hoping to represent a bright new start of the 2016 EK journey. Personally, travel is my strongest passion in life. My dream is to travel across the globe till the end of my days. When I was in university, I felt much disoriented and was searching for the meaning of life. At my lowest point, I was triggered by my soul to go for solo travel. Since then I seized every time gap and opportunity to travel. It is travel which has brought me new hope in life. Therefore, I see eye to eye to the sharing of Paul Chan Chi-yuen, our guest of the featured interview in this issue. We are both having the BURNING DESIRE to travel.

015 marks the end of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UNMDG) that were established in the year 2000. These goals included 8 anti-poverty targets that made significant progress during the past 15 years that they were in play. Global poverty has declined, more children attend primary school, child deaths
dropped significantly, access to safe drinking water greatly increased, and the fight against malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis has saved millions of people. So what will happen post 2015?
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) were adopted. Within t h e s e 1 7 S D G t h e re a re 1 6 9 proposed targets for the goals and 304 proposed indicators to show compliance.
At the most recent UN General Assembly (UNGA) on September 25-27, 2015, the Sustainable Development Summit, the new
These 17 SDG are different from the 10 MDG as they are issues that every nation faces. These are not just issues for developing
countries and they are faced even by the most developed countries. To break down the 17 goals, the first 7 focus on social challenges. The next 5 are the social issues that need to be rectified in order to lift people out of poverty. The next 3 focus on the environment. The final two are about partnerships and how the SDG can only be achieved and maintained if national and global partners work together for peaceful and inclusive societies.

region are: 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 12 Responsible Consumption and Production. Priorities for the Americas region are: 3 Good Health and Well-Being, 4 Quality Education, 13 Climate Action.
In 2004, JCI made a resolution to advance the UNMDG together with the UN. Over the years, many projects and incentives were established at the national and local levels to contribute to the worldwide goals. Just prior to the UNGA in 2015, JCI held her annual JCI Global Partnership
At the JCI World Congress, the Ka n a z a w a D e c l a ra t i o n w a s formed. The priorities for each a re a we re d i s c u s s e d a n d decided. It was also declared that by the next JCI Asia Pacific Conference i n Ka o h s i u n g , Ta i wa n , e a c h countr y would have defined their priorities to work towards for the next 15 years. JCI Japan took initiative to define their priority as SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation. In line with this declaration, this year, JCI Hong Kong will be releasing a survey to all members to define her SDG priority. Which of the 17 goals do you support the most?

E: Why do you choose your path like this? What was the triggering point for quitting your full-time well-paid job and devoting yourself to Walk in Hong Kong?
P
aul Chan Chi-yuen, the Co-founder & CEO of Walk in Hong Kong, is the best person to live out our slogan “Your Passion, Your Uniqueness”. He studied law at university and had further study in politics. He entered government as public official and also worked in financial institution. In 2013, he founded Walk in Hong Kong, an organization which determines to arrange well-researched city tours for anyone eager to experience the lesser-seen sides of Hong Kong.
E = Editor P = Paul Chan Chi-yuen E: You are a travel lover and you published a travel journal. Why do you love travel that much?
P: I was not born to a rich family and my family members were not keen on traveling. I, therefore, had little chance to travel before adulthood. On the other hand, I studied a lot about world history and global politics. This contradiction made me realize my physical exposure to the world was too little.
The turning point of my life was in 2004, the year I completed my MPhil. I took part in a writing competition and won an air ticket to Eastern Europe. Eventually, I spent 40 days there. That was a really inspiring trip and it simply changed my life. Since then, it was a point of no return.
After that trip, I became a freelancer hoping to maintain a life with high flexibility to travel. In a few years’ time, I have left my footprints on around 85 countries out of 193 across the globe. During my oneyear-study in the London School of Economics, I spent 2 to 3 months on the road, with just limited time physically staying in London.
9
I could say I own a burning desire to travel and I do not travel for merely pleasure and enjoyment. Furthermore, I published a travel journal owing to my strong wish to share my travel experiences with others. Travel is implanted as my DNA.
P: After completing my Bachelor’s Degree (LLB at HKU), I ascertain that I have no interest in law. Gradually I discover my interest in public affairs and I spent quite a few years in media, university, think tank and other research-related areas. As per previously mentioned, the walking tour I joined during my backpack tour in Hungar y impressed me much and it laid a foundation to the establishment of Walk in Hong Kong.
E: Can you share with us the travel experience which you think is the most unforgettable? P: I have two to share. The first one is about my backpack tour to Eastern Europe in 2014. One of my stops was at the capital of Hungary – Budapest. I joined a walking tour named “Hammer and Axe”. The tour was not about visiting those popular landmarks or historical sites. Instead, we went to functional houses established during the communist era as well as some statue parks. The size of the tour was small, with just me and a pair of couple living in Australia. The wife was from Uruguay. She fled to Australia due to political persecution. The husband was from Argentina, who was lucky enough to escape from the economic slump in Argentina. The couple chatted with me along the way and asked for my thoughts on topics like the handover of
Hong Kong to China. I enjoyed the process much and treasured the chance to exchange with other nationalities. It is always nice to have some stimulating thoughts on how ordinary people survive from significant political change and live under dynamic political climate.
A n o t h e r u n fo rg e t ta b l e t ra ve l experience which I often share is my trip to West Africa including Ghana and Nigeria. If you have b e e n to A f r i c a , yo u w i l l k n ow all prior travel plan is useless. Situations in Africa are totally unpredictable. At that time, no tourist was there on the streets in Africa. Despite that, I enjoyed the mess and confusion along the journey. Africa is undoubtedly a rapidly-growing region and it is often seen as the future of the world. You can only debunk the misconceptions and understand the real circumstance of a place if you actually pay a visit there.
As time passes, my travel insight s u b l i m a te s. I s ta r t to b e c o m e sensitive to our own city and I wish to relate my travel experiences to my hometown. How is the position of Hong Kong worldwide? I believe we can objectively judge the competitive edge and downside of Hong Kong only if we actually visit other countries. For instance, you will realize the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong is not bad if you had tried to take the tube in London.
The real triggering point of the founding of Walk in Hong Kong was in 2009 when the incident of the discourteous travel guide “Ah-chun” broke out. As some of you might remember, the local tourist guide compelled mainland visitors to make purchases and abused mainland visitors on a coach for not spending enough on shopping. This case brought enormous damages to the image and reputation of Hong Kong
tourism. Apar t from that, other cities are vigorously competing with Hong Kong in terms of tourism and people star t to comment Hong Kong as a boring city. All these urged me to do something for Hong Kong’s local tourism. A f te r l e a v i n g t h e H o n g Ko n g Government, I had a one-year gap and I spent that period doing intensive planning and research on exploring cultural tourism of Hong Kong.

organizations. I deem cultural tourism has been undervalued in the market. No pioneer has ever operated cultural tourism as per
E: How would you like to develop local tourism via Walk in Hong Kong? P: I d e o l o g i c a l l y, I w i s h a n e w perspective could be created to feel and experience Hong Kong. I believe a bottom-up approach has to be adopted and the change has to be initiated from the civil society. Hong Kong is not a place only for purchasing milk powders and cosmetics or visiting theme parks. I and other co-founders of Walk in Hong Kong hope to develop alternative ways to view Hong Kong and hence bringing a new sense of belongings to unite Hongkongers.
Practically, I aim at developing a feasible business model for cultural tourism. In the past, it was only initiated by non-profit and charity
business perspective. This road is a tough one since cost has to be very carefully managed. Up till now, we have tailor-made separate walking tours for two sor ts of markets: foreigners and locals. Ultimately, we target to turn cultural tourism to a sort of career and profession.
Taking a step further, I hope to foster an atmosphere that cultural tourism is something widely accepted by Hongkongers. People are accustomed to appreciating the beauty of Hong Kong through historical and cultural perspectives. Now I believe we are on the right track. Nevertheless, more time is needed to prove the sustainability of running cultural tourism as a kind of business. Meanwhile, it is obser ved that neither the consumer pattern nor the market ecology has appeared. Hope there will be competitors in this industry to mutually drive each other and fasten the development of cultural tourism.
E: D o yo u a g re e t h a t yo u a re a Hongkonger with the “Hong Kong Spirit”? How would you describe the spirit in your heart? P: It is difficult for me to answer. In the past, Hongkongers had to face the poverty problem and they had to make money as much as they could. But nowadays, there is no need for the new generation to solve the above problem. Instead, they have to face frustrations. The city is materialistic and welldeveloped but it is hard for people to reach their life goal or realize their dream. Most fresh university graduates have their own dreams but the city does not have a good environment for them to show their qualities. Fortunately, no matter how difficult their situation is, they struggle to face and tackle it for their life goal or dream. For me, this is exactly the “Hong Kong Spirit”.

However, we think it is very cool nowadays! In my view, this is related to the change of the Hong Kong social values. Hongkongers’ stereotyped path of life: find a stable job after university graduation, get promoted, get married, buy flats and cars, give birth, bring up the children and get retired. Nevertheless, the new generation now pursues a different lifestyle from their predecessors. They are eager for slow living and seek for any other possibilities of lifestyle other than their career, and travel reflects their new value.
There is also another group of young tourists who love culture and arts. They love to explore fashionable and modern things in the city, such as local indie bands, artists, galleries, etc. We can feel that the change of the travel modes is very obvious. Evan so, the most popular mode of travel, which is all about eating and playing around, undoubtedly exists all the time. However, another mode of travel which I mentioned before is expected to become more and more well-liked. It has become a current trend because modern education, technology and culture motivate

Have a Smart Trip! Travelling is fun for everyone! This is for sure but wait a minute… What if you have to pack everything you need in the limited space of a suitcase before you fly? Almost every traveler is worried about how they can organize their stuffs well each time they travel. In other words, how can the space of a suitcase be maximized? Especially, how should we pack the souvenirs in the same suitcase after finishing the trip? Here are a few quick tips about packing stuffs in a smart way! Hope they will make your travel experience smooth. Put the items at the right place For example, your toiletries, cosmetics bag and shoes. After placing the above items at the bottom, you may have your flexible clothing and undergarments stuffed on top of them. A little reminder: if you carry a small suitcase into the c a b i n w i t h yo u , yo u m a y p u t yo u r
laptop or tablet in the upper part for the convenience of security check when passing through the customs. Wear light in winter If your destination is a freezing place, you should bring a long down jacket instead of bringing too many thick and heavy clothing. Such jacket really helps to save more space. Also, remember to take your gloves and beanie to keep your hands and head warm. Make good use of bottles for liquid Liquid weighs a lot although it does not look like being heavy. For travelling, small amount of toiletries is enough. It is recommended to store the shampoo, body lotion, toner or even perfume in a few small bottles. In case of leakage, put them in a storage bag.
Grab and Go! – Travel Accessories Choose multifunctional accessories B u y a few u n i ve r s a l p l u g s fo r yo u r electronic products, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, tablets, laptops, etc. Certain smartphones and tablets even can share the same power lines. Give up what you wanted to bring Clothes are usually something you bring too many when travelling. They look light but they actually weigh more than you think! Then, just bring what you are really going to wear and simply buy what you really need at your destination. Use bags to save your time and effort Reserve the space needed for your shopping and carry at least one or two travelling bags to avoid overloading of your suitcase. Also, different sizes of bags can help you arrange your stuffs neatly.
Feel like home on the road Tired of staying at hotels on the road? Or as a backpacker with low budget, you are not able to afford to check into a five-star hotel. Why don’t you try something new? Airbnb is a website for people to list, find and rent lodging. The website can give you a unique overseas accommodation experience or even make you feel like home when travelling. Sharing economy is a growing trend and the Internet absolutely makes it go further. Airbnb is the best example of the perfect combination of the above elements. It allows international home owners who have extra space available to let out their beds, rooms or even their whole apartments or houses. Then, travelers can enjoy staying at different types of accommodation. Here are some reasons why Airbnb is beneficial to you. More space. For example, a family of four have to book at least two rooms if staying
13
in a hotel but on the website, you can find a two or even three bedroom apartment at a lower price! In other words, you have more space but lower price with Airbnb. Equip with full kitchens. You can prepare meals like you are at home. It is one of the ways of cutting travelling budget. Provide better amenities than hotels, such as bicycles, private pools, or even something you cannot imagine! Located at local neighborhoods while hotels are typically in tourist areas. They are much closer to the local people and let you understand more about the local culture. Of course, shops and restaurants charge you less! Home owners are always on your side when you need help or information. For instance, they can recommend more down-to-earth shops and restaurants to make your travelling experience more

Travel around with a sharing car As a budget traveler, you may choose to take trains, buses or even drive a private car to travel around. However, there is a more interesting way to explore the world on the road! With the growing trend of using mobile applications, more and more people tend to travel around by sharing the same car. Blablacar is a website for people to find the drivers who have the same destination on the same day and are willing to sell the available seats on his car. The price depends on the type of the car, the comfortability and the driving experience of the driver. Passengers can compare the prices and discuss the pick-up and drop-off points with the drivers before purchasing the seats. After finishing the trip, passengers have to give the payment code, which is provided by the website, to the drivers and leave comments on the website.
No cash transaction is involved between the drivers and the passengers because every transaction is handled by the website which charges commission. This new mode of travel is now very popular in Europe, with over 2 million users in 19 countries across the globe. It connects drivers and passengers willing to travel together between cities to reduce the burden of the traffic and the travel expenses. Also, it offers you a good chance of meeting new friends on the road! A t ra v e l e r s h a r e s h i s c a r- s h a r i n g experiences with Blablacar in Europe. From Barcelona to Madrid (20 euros for 620km) “The car owner was a middle-aged Spanish man who did not speak English.
He was very nice. When we took a short break on the road, he even bought me a meat pie. On the same car, there was a Spanish girl who could speak good English and help with translation for me. She has become one of my good friends after the trip.” From Vienna to Budapest (12 euros for 243km) “The car owner was a student from Austria. She was very talkative and kept singing during the whole trip. It was really fun because we shared the same interest. Music was our common language!” Like other sharing economy service companies, Blablacar involves potential risks. It is strongly recommended to read the instructions and follow the guidelines very carefully before you share a car with others.
