Message from 2016 National Assigned Executive Officer of JCI East Kowloon

Winston Lin

Greetings! Time flies and we are now in the third quarter of the year. This is the time when events reach a climactic point. I am very happy to see that you led 18 members this year to attend the Asia-Pacific Conference. You broke your Chapter's record and more importantly you opened their door to the world. You let them see and feel the international opportunities which JCI has to offer. This has a profound effect on the future development of the entire Chapter. In addition, with the theme of My Home Sweet Home for your Family Harmony project this year, children learnt the importance of housework from games. I still remember how hot it was that day but the passion kept on burning. Many families brought their kids along to enjoy the beautiful day. It took some hard work but the satisfying smile at the end of the day was worth the effort. I often remind myself that not everything i s b o u n d to h a p p e n . S u c c e s s i nvo l ve s contribution by different members. If you complain about others whenever there is a gap between your expectations and the actual results, no one is happy. O u r vo l u n te e r i n g w i l l m a ke n o s e n s e . Rather, we should always be grateful and communicate more with others to reduce misunderstandings. Appreciate the goodness of others so that we work happily together! I would like to appreciate everyone's support along the year by working together towards deepening the JCI Mission. I hear that you keep mentioning the word "opportunity". On the one hand members take the courage to fight for it. On the other hand members are happy to provide it to others so that we grow together. Next year's board members are ready. I hope that you can continue to seize every opportunity and continue to create positive change together for yourself, for your family, for JCI East Kowloon and for the community. Be All We Can Be! FEATURED INTERVIEW

aving overcome many challenges in the first half of 2016, JCI East Kowloon enters the second half of 2016 with persistence. Our third issue of Channel represents our s ta g e o f P E R S I S T E N C E a n d OV E R C O M I N G O F CHALLENGES. Therefore, SPORTS is adopted as the third sub-theme. We are so honored to have the Technical Director and the Head Coach of the Hong Kong Football Team, Mr. Kim Pan Gon to be the guest interviewee of our Channel 3. Though he was not born in Hong Kong, he is widely regarded as a true Hongkonger with sound Hong Kong Spirit. He has led our football team to make great achievements and is one o f t h e h e ro e s i n H o n g Kong football history.

Sports

What makes Hong Kong so attractive to you? I have moved to and stationed at Hong Kong since 2000. Hong Kong is my dreamland on the ground that it is a place full of oppor tunities. Hong Kong people are gentle and smart. Also, they allow me to feel my passion and attitude. My efforts made for Hong Kong's football industry are treasured and recognized. In addition, Hong Kong is a beautiful city with a high level of security. And I believe my son and daughter can receive good education here. All these appealing factors have made me stay in Hong Kong till now.

Why do you love football so much way that you picked it as your career?

You once said "I don't want to be a coach. I want to be THE coach." What is the difference between a coach and THE coach? Yes, I am determined to be a special coach and to stand out from ordinary coaches. A coach is not the same as a trainer. Apart from skill teaching, THE coach has to train footballers with heart, care and compassion. As THE coach, I wish to teach my boys how to be a better person and bring them a life change. Emotional bonding has to be established with them. In a nutshell, THE coach has to go deeper and further than a coach.

When I was still in college, teachers often asked about our dreams. 80% of the class expressed their wish to be a soccer player when they grow up. To me, football brings huge joy and fun. I love the feeling of an intense competition. I very much enjoy fighting together with my teammates. The team spirit makes me highly motivated and energetic!

The slogan for HK team is “to die for Hong Kong”. Can you share with us more on this approach in leading the team? What is the Hong Kong Spirit in your heart? Country and nationality are important. As I was raised in South Korea, I possess strong nationalism. Without an intact country, there is no family and no corporations. As the head coach, I always remind players to fight for their own place and honour. We do not play football for money. They should remember tightly that many Hong Kong citizens support the Hong Ko n g N a t i o n a l Fo o t b a l l Team. Hong Kong citizens are our motivation. We fight for Hongkongers. That is the Hong Kong Spirit in my heart. Furthermore, I firmly believe football is an important element to unite the country. This is what we call “COUNTRY POWER”.

As the head coach, how do you perceive the p ro s p e c t o f t h e H o n g Kong Football Team? We a re n o w i n a d i ffi c u l t situation. As we performed quite well in the last tournament, Hong Kong people now have higher expectations towards us. Yet, the fact is our standard hasn’t been raised much. We w i l l t re a t i t a s p o s i t i ve pressure. Our next target is the Asian Qualifiers of 2019 AFC Asian Cup. But we are facing considerable difficulty. For example, the training sessions we can offer to players are

far from enough. There are also not enough facilities and infrastructures. Given that roughly ten years are needed to sufficiently raise the standard of a football team, I now put much focus on developing young football players. Frankly, I think youths in Hong Kong are smart but we a k . T h ey e a s i l y g i ve u p and do not possess enough m e n ta l s t re n g t h . T h ey a re enjoying overly comfortable environment in Hong Kong with too much care from parents. That is why I often ask our trainers to give more intensive and tough trainings to them.

What is your personal goal and aspiration as THE coach? For sure, I want to reach a higher position in Asia. I want to be one of the best coaches in Asia. But at this moment, the largest portion of my heart stays in Hong Kong. I feel like I am responsible for the Hong Kong Football Team.

EK

NEW MEMBERS

The first EK event I attended was the inauguration dinner in 2016. I was impressed by the energetic new board members in the event. I was particularly impressed by the speech by P Iris showing the passion and dedication of the new board. When I first joined EK in February this year, I was warmly welcomed by the Chapter and had the privilege to talk to a few PPs. No doubt that I got inspired by their hearted sharing of their JC journey and experience which further enhanced my dedication to and my sense of belonging of EK! Furthermore, I wish to build up my JCI knowledge, learn the true value of JCI and build EK into a place that will discover the potentials of members and nurture their development in their JCI path!

Rain EK is a small-size chapter and there are around 40 full members and hence there is a strong cohesion. Prospective members are taken good care by President Iris and other members. We learn and grow with happy laughter. I try my best to participate in most events of EK. I have taken part in two EK projects, which was the fund-raising and April MFG, when I was a PM; also I am always willing to be a helper. What is more, I always invite my friends to join EK.

Ace I was introduced to EK by VP Carol. I found that JCI EK is a meaningful place. I am on the path of seeking self-improvement. I will do whatever I can to learn and gain experiences in EK.

Jason Tony

After years of work, I encountered bottleneck in my life and I know I have to do something different to come out from my comfort zone, that's why I joined JCI. Through JCIEK, I would like to further develop my leadership skills, communication skills and be good team member and leader in different projects. To me, JCIEK is energetic, full of young people, getting together to create social values. As the chapter is also "young", it is quite flexible and allows room for innovation.

When I was a student, I did not realize the importance of engaging myself in social events. Time flies like an arrow and here I am in my middle age. I hope one day if my son or daughter asks me the history of Tony Tang, I can proudly share my wonderful experiences of being a part of the JCI family, one of the young active citizens.

New member in 2016 Male Female

Katri I join EK because I want to meet more new friends, raise my English standard and have self-development in various aspects. EK fellows are nice. I have learnt a lot by doing projects and I will participate more in the future. If I have to pick one, the area of Community Development attracts me the most.
