Stepping into the 9th year of my JCI journey, I would like to express how grateful I have always been for being involved in this wonderful organisation. I hope both our local organisations would have more opportunities to collaborate during our term of office. Once again, I wish JCI Petaling Jaya to have a great and fruitful year ahead.

2020 JCI KUALA LUMPUR PRESIDENT Damian Thomas Khaw Lok Juang 2020 President JCI Kuala Lumpur (Mother Chapter - Sponsor LO of JCI Petaling Jaya)

“2020 JCI Petaling Jaya: A New Dawn Rises” It is my pleasure to congratulate my former high school senior (Catholic High School, PJ), President Yee Teck Ji as the new leader & champion of 39 years strong legacy of JCI Petaling Jaya. To be the torch bearer as one of the most highly awarded chapter that has produced an outstanding National President such as 2017 NP Nurul Huda in recent years is both an honor, responsibility & by no means a light task to be bestowed upon any young leader. It requires true leadership, finesse & practical wisdom to pull it off. All of these qualities are found in President Yee Teck Ji. As a witness to his humility, capabilities & behind the scenes servitude myself, I believe that under the steady leadership of President Teck Ji, JCI Petaling Jaya will always be prepared in the face of challenges confronting the youths today. As it is the spirit that sustained JCI Petaling Jaya through the ups & downs over 39 years, so it is the same spirit that will propel momentous achievements far into the future for generations to come.

20

As with any successful organizations, the greatest gift is its members. Yes, you the members who are reading this message. Because of you, JCI Petaling Jaya is able to create massive impact in your community which you live in through award winning projects like Dragon Ambassador (Best Local Peace Project in JCI World Congress), International Children Drawing Contest (ICDC) and JCIPJ FoodHero. Everybody counts & it all began with you, the members. Stay strong, stay united. As the mother chapter of JCI Petaling Jaya, words cannot describe our joy & pride to your current growth, passion & humility. JCI Kuala Lumpur will always be here to support till the end of time. We believe you are in the right direction. The best part is, this is just the beginning. God bless & may you have an exciting & fruitful year ahead!

2020 JCI BANDAR SETIA ALAM PRESIDENT Siew Ming Yan

2020 President JCI Setia Alam (Baby Chapter - Extended LO of JCI Petaling Jaya)

President of Baby Chapter of JCI Petaling Jaya It’s the time of the year again where we gather to witness the installation of the new board of directors of JCI Petaling Jaya. It’s my honour to be able to pen some thoughts on this significant occasion. Members of JCI Bandar Setia Alam are grateful to our mother chapter for incubating us while we were at infant stage in our JCI journey. We had our Charter Night along with JCI Petaling Jaya’s Installation & Award Banquet in 2018. We managed to familiarize ourselves with JCI culture and systems through various joint events in our first year of operations.Things has evolved a lot since then, we are proud to say this baby chapter can finally walk independently. We could not achieve all these without the help of our mother chapter. We couldn’t ask for a better mother chapter.

22

We have special thanks to JCI Senator Nurul Huda Affandi and JCI Senator Lim Zhi Hong from JCI Petaling Jaya for their undying support and guidance throughout our JCI journey. Lastly, I would like to congratulate the newly elected President, Yee Teck Ji and his board of directors. We the board of directors of JCI Bandar Setia Alam are looking forward to more meaningful collaborations with our mother chapter in the future. I would also like to thank the organizing committees for working very hard to ensure the success of the JCI Petaling Jaya Installation & Award Ceremony 2020.

4 AREAS OF OPPORTUNITIES Junior Chamber International (JCI) is an organization of opportunities. The opportunities available within JCI are numerous, it could take a lifetime to grasp them all. Most members select those which cater to their particular needs and make the most of them. Basically there are four Areas of Opportunities within the organization which is Individual, Community, International and Business. Projects are conducted in each area. As the members work on these projects, they encounter opportunities for total development.

INDIVIDUAL

COMMUNITY

Opportunities for personal development are offered in the Individual Development Area. Seminars organized and conducted by professional trainers and/or Junior Chamber International members, help members to speak effectively, learn leadership skill, improve their communication abilities and enhance their personal development.

The Community Area of Opportunities gives the member a chance to work with his/ her community. The member surveys the needs of the community and organizes projects to cater to those needs. The Opportunity to meet important members of the community and the general public is always there. However, the most valuable opportunity of this Area is make a concrete contribution to one’s environment andfellow human beings. In this key area, not only can members be of great benefit to their community but also have the ideal workshop for putting into practice the skills they have been developing in their individual and management courses.

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS Your JCI membership will bring you great personal benefits. It can be the means to the total development of your personality, and new horizons will be opened to you. As a member, you will learn to do so much more than you would in the other associations. In JCI, a doctor may supervise a school construction project, a businessman may chair a child health project, a mechanic may organize and direct a seminar. In the prime of your lif, grasp the opportunity to become a person with real and varied skills.

INTERNATIONAL The Opportunities available in the International Area are very impressive. Via this Area, JCI members can derive an awareness of what is happening in other parts of the world. This Area also allows for direct experience with different customs and cultures and helps the members understand fellow members and fellow human beings throughout the world. It also offers the opportunities to contribute toward world peace simply by creating friendships across country boundaries.

42

BUSINESS In the Business Area of Opportunities, members can exchange business ideas and do business with other interested members, not only in their own chapter or country but also with a network of almost 400,000 members around the world. Business Opportunities also give JCI the chance to enhance the economics of the community by conducting projects to increase the productivity and effectiveness of business. Also contributes to this goal are visits to successful companies to learn how they conduct their business, having successful entrepreneurs speak at monthly meetings, and conducting training sessions on how to enhance one’s company or work.

Other opportunities within the JCI organization not confined to any specific Area are exchanging ideas, socializing, making worthwhile business contacts, and working alongside people of different backgrounds. By actively participating in the administration of the chapter, members also develop managerial skills, working on fund-raising projects, arrange meetings, prepare scrapbooks for awards, recruit and orient new members, produce newsletters and press releases, work with the media, etc. Learning such skills as how to create and control a budget and manage people can give the member a whole new perspective, greatly expanding his/her personal and career possibilities. JCI membership offers challenges that make life more meaningful, worthwhile, and personally rewarding. A lot depends on the willingness of the member to identify and pursue these opportunities. This is one organization that supports the philosophy of learning by doing. The idea is not look for what the organization can do for you, but to see what you can do for yourself through the organization.

Flashback 2019

FOODHERO PROJECT Officially launched 15th July 2019, FoodHero is initiated by JCI Petaling Jaya as a sustainable long term project which channels food oversupply to needy groups in the Petaling Jaya community. FoodHero currently partners with 4 bakeries and 2 delivery companies. Beneficiaries are 2 orphanage homes, 1 disabled home and 1 community centre which serves the poorest 40% in the community. The strategic partners for the bakeries are from Tedboy Bakery, Haruka Bakery, Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and TK Bakery. The strategic partners for delivery are Running Man and EatFun. The consumables goes towards the following organizations:- YS Charity Foundation, Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home, Agathians Shelter and Community Transformation Initiative Bhd. The project was designed as per JCI 2019 Plan of Action and JCI Active Citizen Framework. FoodHero currently provides daily bread to 75 children from 3 orphanage homes and a number of poor families served by a Community Centre. Collaboration with our partners is central to the positive results of FoodHero. Through deepening engagement, organisations who has previously never heard of JCI are now partnering with us to make a difference. We also received the support of the youngest ADUN YB Jamaliah Jamuluddin, guest of honor at FoodHero’s Press Conference.

46

To date FoodHero has successfully saved approximately 7000 pieces of consumable bread from being thrown away as waste and properly channeling them to the needy. At an approximately discounted value of RM2.50 per bun, this would sum up to savings of RM17,500 for FoodHero beneficiaries in a duration of 8 months. Throughout the course of this project we noticed many of the partners and beneficiaries engaged in FoodHero are young citizens. Many who has previously not heard of JCI were impressed with the mission of JCI and have willfully decided to partner with us. We are positive that FoodHero will provide development opportunities to the beneficiaries and partners, thus empowering them to create positive change. A school visitation program has been arranged to expose the Dragon Ambassador participants to the formal learning experience in Malaysia. SJK (C) Kian Sit ( a primary school in Sekinchan) as a supporting partner has made special arrangements for the Dragon Ambassador participants exposed to local language class learning, local foods tasting, handicraft workshop, drama (Three Kingdoms: Borrowing Arrow in Bahasa Malay) by local student, interactive games and sharing session. In addition, Dragon Ambassador participants were also given an opportunity to visit rice paddy field in Sekinchan and experience paddy planting. With the great efforts of the Dragon Ambassador committees, Dragon Ambassador project has been awarded the 2nd Runner up of Best Local Peace Project at JCI Malaysia National Convention and the Best Local Peace Project at JCI World Congress in Year 2019. Dragon Ambassador is a project co-organised with our International Sister Chapter - JCI City, Hong Kong which aim to provide equal educational opportunity to young student in Hong Kong & Malaysia through a multicultural immersive experience that teaches vital skills at an important developmental age. Dragon Ambassador was once organised back in Year 2013 and after 6 years, that our Sister Chapter JCI City, Hong Kong once again collaborate with JCI Petaling Jaya to serve the community. With this program, we hope that both Dragon Ambassador participants and local students in Malaysia will learn to appreciate and embrace the uniqueness and differences among different countries and thus prove to the world that Peace is Possible.

50
