Welcome from 2015 President LEAP 100 Years Public Speaking Afternoon Tea The Team: Ilona Alcock Community Events Diary The Benefits JCI Sheffield Annual Dinner JCI Yorkshire International Sheffield Chamber of Commerce

Hello there

be the CHANGE

I am writing my introduction this month from my hotel room in Istanbul, Turkey as you do! I have arrived a few days early before the start of this years JCI European Conference with a couple of other JCI Sheffield members to have a little time sight seeing before the jam packed conference opens on 3rd June.

As well as the start of June holding this prestigious international event, it also marks National Volunteers Week, held every year from 1st-7th June. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for helping to be the CHANGE by being an active citizen and volunteering in so many ways both within JCI and outside of JCI. It really is difficult to keep up with all the varied interests and activities our members are involved with, so thank you very much.

For those of you who may not have been able to join us at JCI European Conference this month, there is still chance to forge international links. Following our fantastic stay in Westport, Ireland in March to visit our twin chamber JCI Mayo, I am very excited to be welcoming them back to Sheffield at the end of the month (weekend of 26th June) for our ‘twinning invasion’. We have all sorts planned from a ‘Steel City Ghost Tour, training on networking and effective communications, volunteering with the RSPCA as well as a visit to ‘Go Ape’. We are just crossing all the ‘t’s and dotting all the ‘i’s on some of the last arrangements, so please be sure to keep an eye on our website and social media accounts so you don’t miss out on getting involved in our ‘twinning is winning’ weekend! Last month, certainly was another varied month. JCI Sheffield hosted the JCI Yorkshire Regional Extempore (Off The Cuff) Public Speaking competition, with four of our members competing, one of which was in the final – massive well done to you all! I have to say congratulations to JCI Rotherham member Shane Young who did a great job in winning the trophy this year. On the topic of public speaking, I attended the second JCI UK National Public Speaking Academy in Birmingham with Sheffield member Neal. This was a great chance to learn new skills and techniques and something I would highly recommend you all consider doing next year. I was also proud to be invited for a working lunch with Matthew Barzun The US Ambassador for the UK and several other City leaders to discuss opportinities and challenges for Sheffield. This was a follow up to a visit from Embassy officials earlier in the year to identify and forge links with key contacts. I look forward to what the rest of the year has in store.

Mark Smith 2015 President JCI Sheffield mark.smith@jcisheffield.org.uk P.S. Have you reserved your tickets yet to the ‘Through The Decades’ Annual Dinner on 12th September?

MOTIVATE

The Cutlers’ Hall was built in 1832 by Samuel Worth and Benjamin Broomhead Taylor at a cost of £6,500. It was extended in 1865–7 by Flockton & Abbott, and again in 1888 by J. B. Mitchel-Withers. It is Sheffield’s third Cutlers’ Hall, the previous buildings, which were built in the same location, were constructed in 1638 and 1725. Today, the building is used for many of the grandest events in the city’s civic and commercial life, for instance the annual Cutlers’ Feast which became an annual event in 1648. As of 2008 there have been 372 Cutlers’ Feasts with breaks only for the World Wars and a cancellation in 1921. JCI Sheffield is looking forward to holding our Annual Dinner ‘Through the Decades’ at The Cutlers’ Hall on 12th September 2015.

CONNECT

2015 JCI Sheffield President Mark Smith attended the historic Cutlers Feast held at Sheffield Cutlers Hall. The 379th dinner was a white tie event, billed as one of the most imporant business dinners north of London. With hundreds of politicians and representatvies from industry, the civil service, the military, City of London livery companies and freemen of the Company of Cutlers in attendance.

Jurgen Maier, Chief excutive of Siemens UK and guest speaker at this years Cutlers Feast, said that business conditions were better than they had been for decades, but bosses had to take the ‘next step’ and be bolder and export, invest, innovate and educate for the long term. Mr Maier, the principle guest, questioned whether firms were ‘global enough’ in their thinking. Praising the city of Sheffield he added “if manufacturers create a little more of the ambition and vision shown by the Sheffield steel barons, inventors and entrepeneurs of several generations, the city can seed a new industrial revolution”.

Mark Smith President of JCI Sheffield said “I was honoured to be invited to this prestigeous evening, full of tradition and celebration for Sheffield’s manufacturing industry that continues to play such a key part in our city’s thriving economy. I am looking forward to hosting our 2015 Annual Dinner here in September where we will be joined by Senators and JCI alumni from around the country.”

"If you can speak you can influence, if you can influence you can change lives" (Rob Brown, 2013) The subject I chose to talk to my fellow delegates on the JCI UK 2015 Public Speaking Academy was around the question 'what public speaking topic should I choose'? Picking such a topic allowed me to talk about the pressure that I, and I'm sure many of the other delegates felt under, as well as all the key considerations that flooded my mind, when thinking about what to speak to them about. On reflection and perhaps with a little common sense... (?) I suppose it wasn't actually surprised that we had been asked to prepare and structure a speech, for the public speaking academy. You would think that wouldn't you, but for me, I felt surprised, shocked and stunned when I realized I had somehow managed to completely bypass the videos and instructions posted on the facebook group for delegates, until chatting to Ben from JCI Barnsley the week before, when he asked me what topic had I chosen to talk about! Whoops! It is often said that most people dread public speaking more so than the fear of death. That's right, apparently people would rather die than speak in public! One survey found 45% chose public speaking as their number one fear, compared to 31% who said death! Is that really true? If it is, what is it about public speaking that fills us with dread? The fear of forgetting what we were going to say? The fear of pitching your talk at the wrong level (too complicated so its over your audience's head, too simplistic and you've lost them)? Or perhaps the fear of looking stupid? These reasons and many more, boil down to just that...fear. Why is it that we would quite easily ‘give people a break’ if we were watching and listening to them and they stumbled over their words, got a bit tongue tied or forgot their point? Why is it ok for them and not for us? Like many others, I could be my own worst enemy, or rather, a little voice that is often chirping away in my head, could be my worst enemy. ‘You could have done that better?’ says this voice often? ‘You should have said that’, its says...’you forgot to say that!’ Don’t get me wrong, having such an ‘internal thermometer’ for want of a better word, does help me to keep high standards and strive to ‘be better’; its just sometimes, I wish I could settle for doing ‘ok’! So knowing that whatever topic I choose to talk about could give information, could inspire or motivate or the ideal in my opinion, do all these things, did put the pressure on. The expectation to deliver ‘a corker’, to pass on ‘words of wisdom’ and to ultimately ignite the audience’s passion to encourage them to make a change, was, I thought, a big deal!

Ultimately, I was comfortable with struggling to have chosen what to talk about and to have agonized over my subject matter. Having the floor is a privilege, having an attentive audience is an honour and public speaking is powerful. "If you can speak you can influence, if you can influence you can change lives" Mark Smith. 2015 JCI Sheffield President

Scared. Nervous. A little excited. On the 26 May I took part as a competitior at the JCI Yokrshire Extempore Competition held at The Holiday Inn Sheffield. Those emotions were how I had felt all day waiting for the competition to start. I read and re-read my notes from our Extempore Training and hoped they would all kick in like muscle memory. I started to feel extremely nervous as the competition began. It was a room full of familar faces but I couldn’t shake the feeling of nerves in my stomach. Always the type of person to stutter or lose my wording I thought and that I wouldn’t make it past this initial round. The not knowing what I was going to pull out of the bag excited me and the first round actually went better than I thought it would albeit a few things I did against my best efforts (i.e rocking). By the second round I started to feel confortable knowing that if I did make a mistake that the poeple in the audience would simply accept it making me feel at ease. I made it all the way through to the final round with Shane and Tom from JCI Rotherham. After we had delivered our final 5 minute long talk we waited for the results. After a nervous wait Shane from JCI Rotherham took the trophy! Congratulations to him! I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this experience - it has definately pushed me outside of my confort zone. It’s even made me a little more confident and I think I may actually take part in the competition again. I think my next turn at Extempore will be at JCI UK National Convention on the 20th - 22nd November! Will you compete? JCI Sheffield are also hosting debating training with JCI Rotherham on the 23rd July as well as hosting Public Speaking Training on the 18th of August! Ryan Pilkington JCI Sheffield Communications Director

The Team Each edition will give you the chance to meet a member of the 2015 council team for JCI Sheffield. You can learn all about thier passions, thoughts and more! In this issue it’s out Immediate Past President Ilona Alcock!

Name: Ilona Alcock How long have you been a member of JCI? Since September 2011 How long have you been on council team? I became Personal Development Director in 2012 Current role: Immediate Past President What are your hobbies? I have started running in the last few years and have just taken up trail running (with my first off road half marathon coming up very soon – eek). You can usually find me out and about for nice food and a few drinks! Why JCI for you? So many reasons! Amazing opportunities for training, travel and to meet incredible people. Where else would you get to go to a Leadership Academy in Sweden with 85 delegates from across Europe?! It’s great to know that wherever I go in the world there are JCI folk waiting to make me feel welcome.

Tell us about your role: As the 2014 President, I remain on the Council team this year to ensure a smooth transition and to support the current President. As our roles change every year it is important to help maintain a ‘corporate memory’. What is your ambition within JCI? Mainly to stay involved – to keep learning and building great friendships! One day I would love to get an international debating trophy (we made the European finals in Malta) and to support the organisation at a national level. Proudest moment at JCI (so far!) So incredibly proud of everything we achieved in Sheffield last year – we received awards at regional level (including best chamber), national level, and were shortlisted as one of the top four personal development programmes in the WORLD for our Be Better flagship project! More than that though, I have been so proud to witness the development of our members. Most embarrassing moment: Ha ha! I’m sure there should be loads here... Probably fracturing my coccyx on stage at JCI World Congress in Germany whilst attempting to river dance.... What is your occupation? I run a technology company which is transforming the recruitment industry. Our first product, TheJobsMenu.com, is a niche jobs board for the catering and hospitality industry and has just launched. It’s hugely challenging but loads of fun. Claim to Fame? The fact I do not have an answer makes me think this should get added to my to do list! So if you have any ideas let me know…. Maybe a JCI Guinness World Record challenge is in order?! What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining their local JCI council team? Do it! But think about it properly first, and talk to the current team. It is a challenging role so think about the time you have to commit, which area are you passionate about supporting and what you could bring to the role.

We start off June by marking the annual National Volunteers Week which is held between 1st-7th June. This is a great opportunity to acknowledge and thank our members for being great active citizens and volunteering to make a positive impact in our communities. On a local level, our members have so far given over 150 volunteering hours this year through activities we have been running in Sheffield. This doesn’t even include all the hours that our dedicated Council Team devote to run the chamber for our members each month. We know that on top of all the time members spend volunteering through JCI Sheffield, many devote lots of additional time in helping great causes outside of their JCI lives. JCI UK nationally are calling on members to share their stories and what they love about volunteering on twitter using the hash tag #JCIvolunteering. As well making a significant impact on the community, JCI members can also log their volunteering hours and receive recognition for their efforts too through the Active Citizen Experience (ACE) program. This was established in 2011 by former JCI Doncaster President Katie Ogley and is still being used by many JCI members across the country still today. The scheme has 3 standard accreditation levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold for logging between 10 and 30 hours. There is even a platinum level for keen beans who log 100 or more hours! www.jciuk.org.uk/ace We are not quite half way through the year yet and have lots more community activities and projects in the pipeline. If you are interested in getting involved in any of these, please get in touch with Neal Stirk 2015 Community Action Director.

International

JCI European Conference 2015

Our President Mark Smith, Deputy President Gareth Carson and Communications Director Ryan Pilkington ventured to Istanbul, Turkey for the four day JCI European Conference, joining as part of the JCI UK delegation of members and representatives from the British Senate. Whilst as Sheffield members this was our second European Conference since joining JCI, it was nevertheless filled with many firsts. Mark made both his international training debut, delivering the JCI recommended course ‘effective communications’ as well as his international debating debut, representing JCI UK with fellow Yorkshire members, Ben Hawley from JCI Barnsley as team captain and Charlotte Scouthern from JCI Rotherham, debating the topic ‘cyber bullying should be made a criminal offence’, on the opposing side. Unfortunately, those proposing the motion, JCI Latvia won, but our JCI UK team certainly gave a good fight, cheered on by a great bunch of supporters from the UK and Ireland! Our Sheffield members Mark, Gareth and Ryan were invited to the Senate bar by Lesley Young Past Executive Vice President assigned to Europe in 2013. Never one for being ‘off duty’, Gareth took this as an opportunity to promote the JCI Sheffield ‘Through the Decades’ Annual Dinner and was overwhelmed by the positive responses. Gareth had the fantastic opportunity to meet Ted Williams the British Senate Chair who shared some of his many stories of the organisation from when he was a JCI member. He was reflecting on how much business and the world has changed over the years and reminiscing when he sent his first ever email in 1984 on JCI business, whereas now we send emails, text messages and whats app messages to communicate with each other! Gareth was also excited to hear how many of the senate had a soft spot for Sheffield as a chamber and how they could add to our knowledge of the history of JCI Sheffield. We were up bright eyed and bushy tailed for the 9am morning show on the second day of conference where Lesley Young delivered a very powerful and inspiration talk on the subject of perseverance as part of impact talks. World President Ismail Haznedar then presented several ‘project impact 100’ awards to members for projects that have impacted at least 100 people.

World President Ismail Haznedar then presented several ‘project impact 100’ awards to members for projects that have impacted at least 100 people. JCI Sheffield was proud to receive recognition for our 2015 Easter Egg appeal where we collected more than 700 easter eggs for children, families and older people in Sheffield. To round off the conference, the JCI UK delegation certainly scrubbed well, donning their black ties and ball gowns for a night of recognition and celebration of the incredible impact that JCI members across Europe have made over the last 12 months. We are reliably informed that there are 38 JCI member countries in Europe and 30,000 JCI members. We are over the moon that JCI UK was recognized with 5 European Awards including ‘most outstanding new chamber’ by JCI Canary Wharf, ‘best growth and development project’ for the JCI UK National New Chamber Task force. Then JCI Sheffield won another 3 awards for the UK – these are ‘best personal skills development program’ for ‘Be Better: Be The Change’ training program, ‘most outstanding local project’ and ‘best economic development project’ both for our project ‘Time to Rise’, working in partnership with RISE Sheffield. These award entries are considered for activity taking place from April 2014 to April 2015. In addition to this, Ryan was shortlisted at the age of 20 years old in the top four shortlisted for ‘most outstanding JCI member in Europe’! We were also thrilled that Ben Hawley from JCI Barnsley was also in the top four shortlisted for ‘most outstanding local president’ as was JCI Rotherham for ‘best personal skills development program’. Our conference experience wasn’t without the odd hair raising moment including when Mark along with members of JCI UK National Board Drew, Sarah, Wasim and other got stuck in a small lift for about 10 minutes, not to mention the taxi rides which certainly were an experience! Whilst the weather in Istanbul wasn’t as hot and sunny as we had hoped, the Sheffield crew managed to grab a ‘hop on, hop off’ bus tour around the City to see such delights as The Blue Mosque, the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, Hagia Sophia (Sultan Tombs).
