“Please help us keep the clubhouse and other facilities secure. ”

Commodore’s Report I hope you were one of the almost 200 who gathered on New Year’s Day for the tasty black-eyed peas, cornbread and brownies which Steve & Lori Meyer made again this year. If you weren’t, you missed one of the most enjoyable and relaxing New Year’s Day festivities we’ve had in many years. Although it was fairly cool and windy that morning, by mid-afternoon the temperature had risen and the wind had died down enough to make a very pleasant sail for the sailboats that went out that afternoon. Our fleet of boats was joined by several others from the municipal harbor so quite a few boats out to start off 2009. We had a nice group on New Year’s Eve with a variety of potluck dishes followed by Don Steeber and crew fixing breakfast shortly after midnight. The adult Christmas party on Saturday (December 13) and the kids’ party on Sunday the 14th were well-attended. My thanks to Mary McClendon for letting me join her for a few duets of Christmas carols on the piano. Many thanks to all who helped make the holidays another series of great social events at OCBC. The Board of Governors moved their January meeting up a few days to Monday to avoid meeting on New Year’s Day and rescheduled the January club meeting for Thursday, January 15 at 1930 hours since the BCS Bowl that included the OU football team was playing January 8. The Planning Committee met on Saturday, January 10. Entertainment Chairman Terry Davis is planning to have our annual Chili cook-off on Saturday, January 24 so hope you’re planning to make your favorite recipe to share. Enjoy Saturday, February 14 with your Valentine then the following weekend (February 21) will be the annual Mardi Gras party which is always a big hit. The North U. seminar we’re hosting on Saturday, February 7. Be sure to sign up on-line for this really informative session on the new rules for 2009-2012. The following weekend begins several seminars David Bass is planning for Sunday afternoons in February and March, which will include Mike Anderson with basic Race Committee training which I encourage all provisionals to attend and volunteer to be part of that committee. It’s a great way to learn a lot about both the race committee responsibilities, but will help your racing skills as well. We’re already getting some inquiries about Lighthouse Charity Regatta this will be the last 2 weekends in June so the C/B weekend will be Father’s Day Weekend. Lighthouse will resume having its monthly meetings on Thursday, January 29 at 6pm. We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help plan the annual event and contact potential sponsors so please join us. Please help us keep the clubhouse and other facilities secure. We continue to have challenges in this area along with doors being left unlocked. There isn’t as much activity this time of the year so please lock the clubhouse when you leave, including the doors near the bathrooms. If you don’t have a club key, please ask Bob Chope. Also, please be a vigilant as you enter or leave and see who might be gaining access to our grounds when the gate is opened. If you are hosting a party, please don’t leave the gate open during the entire party – please close the gate 15-30 minutes after the start of your event. Commodore Ann Kilpatrick

As of this reading the holiday season will be over and life back to normal, I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. As of late we have had some pretty good winds, winds that have caused boats to blow over, lines to break and booms to swing in the wind. As individual boat owners it is our responsibility to make sure that all is secure which includes anchoring down our boats in the dry slips especially the smaller center boards. We do not want to be responsible for causing any damage to our neighbor’s boat. We still have unidentified lockers in the clubhouse, please check to see if there is a “W” on your locker. If there is please let us know who you are so that we can note you on the locker ownership listing, if we do not know who you are then the lock will be cut off as of January 15- 2009. During this past month we have had two disturbing incidents, the first being a member having items stolen from his vehicle while in our parking lot. The second an intruder was disturbed and ran from the club house when one or two of our members arrived at the club. PLEASE if you are the last to leave or think that you are the last, police the doors to see that they are LOCKED. Also please keep the gate closed and be careful who you give the access number to. As a note, all the buildings were checked after this incident and doors were found to be unlocked in all buildings with no one on the grounds. I can’t sign off without reminding all, we NEED your name/names on your equipment, trailers etc, also stickers on the boats. Have a great New Year Rear Commodore, Bob Chope

Fleet Reports Handicap Fleet: The December Handicap Fleet meeting was held at Don and Nancy Steeber’s home and the fleet is very appreciative for their warm hospitality. Being the last meeting of the year, Don quickly received reports from the various staff members and then proclaimed it time for Dirty Santa. This annual December occurrence is anxiously awaited for by all. Dirty Santa can sometimes be a team sport or just a wield free for all with everyone for themselves. The highlight of the night was the return of the infamous “golden shorts”, which Don Steeber was fortunate enough to select. No one knows where they came from and no one knows where they have been, but I bet they will be back next year. Anyone interested in joining the Handicap Fleet is warmly invited to attend the next meeting which will be held at the Boat Club on January 9, 2009 starting at 1930 hours. There is plenty of fine food and refreshments as well as friendly discussion for both the ardent sailor and non sailor alike. Happy Holidays to all from the Handicap Fleet !! Bill Graham
