CENTRAL CATHOLIC CLASS A FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONS
Knights fulfill their destiny with state title I heard it as early as the fall of 2006, when the first members of Central Catholic’s current crop of seniors began making a varsity impact. “This class will win a state championship,” more than one person told me. The players heard it too, and as time passed, expectations continued to rise. When a fourth quarter comeback attempt against Sheridan in last year’s sectional semifinals fell short, the Knights’ seniors faced an all-or-nothing scenario in 2009. Central Catholic’s undefeated championship season looked easy, a snarling, storming behemoth flattening a list of outmanned opponents. But the most impressive aspect of the Knights’ dominant run was how effortless it sometimes appeared despite the physical and mental challenges the team faced. Talking to the Central Catholic players before the season, they admitted feeling the pressure. Some of that pressure certainly came from outside forces. Much of it came from within the locker room, where the Knights were determined to capitalize on the promise everyone knew they possessed. The Class of 2010 provided Central Catholic with a mix of talent and numbers rarely seen at the Class A level. By the end of the season, only right tackle/nose guard Mark Strong started both ways, and most played exclusively on one side of the ball. Yet the Knights spent much of the season concerned about their preparedness to play deep into games. After last season’s 96-0 debacle against Clinton Prairie, coach Kevin O’Shea admitted he was more sensitive to the lopsided scores CC would put up most nights, often by the end of the first half. As a result the team’s first string rarely played beyond the third quarter. That wasn’t an issue during the regular season, when the Knights won every game by at least 42 points. While CC’s ability to platoon limited the physical toll on each player, an opening-round sectional game against Pioneer loomed as a big test of the Knights’ ability to play four quarters. It turned out they needed that

depth for other reasons. Several key players missed a game or more with injuries, including leading rusher Tom Almond, leading receiver Marc Withers, leading tackler Strong and both starting inside linebackers, Jake Milakis and Alex Anderson. The health problems extended into the postseason. Almond tore knee ligaments in the sectional opener and missed the rest of the state tournament. Milakis missed the sectional championship and regional with another knee injury. in the sectional opener would not only end Central Catholic’s season, it would cement in some people’s
eyes the program’s reputation for postseason letdowns. With statewide attention focused on LaRocca Field for what many considered the de facto Class A championship game, the Knights produced a 20-0 victory over second ranked Pioneer. It was one of nine shutouts posted by the CC defense, but none were bigger. With the Panthers out of the way, Central Catholic resumed its dominance and outscored its next four opponents 194-19. A Fountain Central team with a similar regular season résumé awaited in the state finals. The Knights finished things off with a 52-0 victory. Central Catholic enjoyed a significant talent advantage over most of its opponents. But when perfection is expected, you have to admire the teams that pull it off. INDIANAPOLIS — Sophomore wingback Danny Anthrop totaled 195 yards and four touchdowns for Central Catholic, which led 28-0 at halftime on Nov. 27. The Knights posted their ninth shutout and never allowed previously unbeaten Fountain Central to cross the CC 40 yard line at Lucas Oil Stadium. Central Catholic added a third Class A championship to titles won in 1976 and 1999. It was the most lopsided Class A championship game since CC’s 59-7 victory over Perry Central in 1999, and the biggest shutout since Sheridan beat Bremen 59-0 in 1988. Fountain Central had allowed 47 combined points over its previous eight games. CC set a Class A championship game record by limiting the Mustangs to 7 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Two second-half sacks of Scott Moore contributed to a net minus-4 rushing effort after halftime for Fountain Central. Greg Burns, who received the Mental Attitude Award after the game, intercepted Fountain Central quarterback Scott Moore to set up a Chris Mills 33-yard touchdown pass to Marc Withers four plays later. Mills finished 12 of 18 for 230 yards and four touchdown passes. Fountain Central came in averaging 412.4 yards and 42.7 points per game. The Mustangs managed only 118 yards against CC and were held below 21 points for just the second time.

PONETO — Joe Naville scored two early touchdowns on Nov. 20 to help the Knights return to the state finals for the first time in 10 years. Behind Chris Mills’ five touchdown passes, the Knights quickly took care of the Raiders by capitalizing on excellent field position throughout the game. Mills completed 20 of 31 passes for 308 yards. Mills had TD passes of 20, 34, 35, 22 and 43 yards, including a pair of scores to Marc Withers. Naville, Cody Christopher and Danny Anthrop also caught touchdown passes from Mills, who surpassed the 9,000-yard career mark. Southern Wells basically had no answer for Mills and attempted to bring pressure to rattle the 6-foot-4 senior. Leading 28-6 at halftime, the Knights’ defense didn’t allow the Raiders a first down until their final scoring drive in the fourth quarter.

Joe Naville rushed for 100 yards on eight carries, including a 46-yard touchdown on the game’s second play on Nov. 13. The Knights’ only punt came with one minute left. The defense made 13 tackles for loss and picked off three Collin Stevens passes en route to CC’s eighth shutout of the season. CC capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive with a 2-yard run by Chris Mills to go up 14-0. The Knights led 42-0 at halftime after Cody Christopher scored on a pair of second quarter runs, and Marc Withers hauled in a pair of Mills touchdown passes. Christopher and Brad Schrader both scored on third-quarter touchdown runs to round out the scoring. The CC defense limited the Cavaliers to just 76 yards on 39 carries (1.9) and 148 total yards.

Central Catholic’s defense forced five turnovers and shut out its seventh opponent on Oct. 23. Senior split end Connor Mackey caught five passes for 140 yards and a touchdown. Scott Windler recorded two of four interceptions for the Knights’ defense. On a wet, windy night, Chris Mills completed 13 of 20 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns and ran for CC’s first score. Pioneer (9-1), which averaged 50.8 points coming in and had scored 49 or more in seven straight games, was shut out for the first time since the 2007 season opener against Cass. A 61-yard completion from Mills to Mackey keyed a first-quarter CC scoring drive capped by Mills’ 1yard plunge. Midway through the second quarter, Pioneer attempted a fake punt on fourth-and-11 at its own 15 but was stopped after an 8yard gain. Two plays later, Mills found Marc Withers open in the end zone from 23 yards to make it 14-0. That was the last first down for the Knights until early in the fourth quarter, but Pioneer managed only 65 second-half yards in response. Mills and Mackey hooked up for a 49-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth to make it 20-0.

CHALMERS — Chris Mills completed just 14 passes, but five went for touchdowns. He threw for 226 yards despite rain and a muddy Falcon Field on Oct. 30. After CC recovered a Frontier fumble on the game’s third play, Mills found Danny Anthrop on a screen that went for a 28-yard score. Mills also connected with Marc Withers for two touchdowns in the first quarter as CC built a 19-0 lead. Withers’ second touchdown reception went for 62 yards and came on a third-and-20. The Knights opened the second half with an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Cody Christopher scoring on an 11-yard grab. Frontier followed with a 10-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in the second touchdown scored against

FULTON — Cody Christopher caught two first quarter touchdowns and rushed for another as Central Catholic won the Class A, Sectional 34 championship at The Comet Crater on Nov. 6. Danny Anthrop returned the opening kickoff near midfield and three plays later, Chris Mills dumped a screen pass to Joe Naville that went for a 51-yard touchdown. Two plays into top-ranked CC’s next offensive possession, Christopher caught a 5-yard out pass, broke a tackle and went 63 yards for a score. Christopher also had a 5-yard TD reception, and Marc
Withers hauled in a 40-yard score to help CC go up 27-0 after the first quarter. Quarterback Chris Mills, who had 219 yards passing in the first half, scored on a second quarter run, as did Anthrop and Christopher. Meanwhile, the stifling Knights defense held Caston to 55 total yards in the first half as CC led 480. Niall Noonan was 7 of 8 on extra point kicks and also booted a 37-yard field goal. Cody Schrader scored on a 6-yard run in the third quarter to round out the Knights’ scoring. Caston scored two late touchdowns to post the largest point total against CC all season. DELPHI — Danny Anthrop took a sweep 52 yards for a touchdown on Central Catholic’s first play of the season on Aug. 21. On Delphi’s first possession, CC’s Scott Windler darted through the Oracle line to block a Dustin Salyer punt and fell on the ball in the end zone to make it 14-0 less than three minutes in. Tom Almond’s 6-yard TD run and Cody Christopher’s 15-yard scoring run put the Knights up 280 with 4:29 left in the first quarter.

Central Catholic’s defense surrendered its first touchdown of the season but otherwise held the Cavaliers to one first down and minus8 yards in total offense for Senior Night on Oct. 2. CC quarterback Chris Mills completed 21 of 25 passes for 330 yards and five touchdown passes, most of those in the first half. But it was a Mills interception that set up Tri-County’s lone touchdown in the second quarter. Marc Withers caught five of Mills’ passes for 153 yards, including touchdowns of 35 and 50 yards to ignite a 29-point second quarter that put the game away early. Tom Almond added 106 yards on 10 carries.

The victory on Sept. 4 marked the Knights’ longest shutout streak since the 1970 squad blanked five straight opponents. Central Catholic also ran its Hoosier Heartland Conference winning streak to 22 games. The Knights limited Clinton Central to 70 total yards — including 37 rushing yards on 27 carries — and four first downs. Two of the Bulldogs’ first downs came from Central Catholic penalties. Jake Milakis scored on firsthalf runs of 1, 9 and 5 yards to help Central Catholic build a 24-0 halftime lead. He fumbled on his way in for another touchdown early in the third quarter, but Marc Withers scooped the ball up at the 3 and scored to make it 31-0.

and 58 yards on Sept. 18. His efforts zapped the spirit from Carroll, which held CC to seven points until late in the first quarter. When Knights quarterback Chris Mills connected with Niall Noonan on a 34-yard touchdown pass with a minute left in the opening quarter, the floodgates opened. The Knights’ defense held the Cougars to 33 yards and three first downs.

Even though senior quarterback Chris Mills started the game 0-for-3 with two interceptions, the Knights still posted another blowout. Mills finished 10 of 15 for 191 yards and three touchdowns on Sept. 25.
CULVER — Central Catholic’s defense never let Culver Academies cross its own 42 yard line on Oct. 9. Culver Academies (6-2) came into the game averaging 34 points per game against a predominately Class 3A schedule. CC held the Eagles to 49 total yards — 40 on 36 rushing attempts and 9 yards on 2 of 14 passing — while posting its sixth shutout of the season. Chris Mills threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score. In the second half, Danny Anthrop rushed for a touchdown and scored another on a pass play while accumulating 87 yards.

With over a quarter of its student body absent amidst a flu outbreak, Clinton Prairie was forced to forfeit the regular season finale on Oct. 16. The cancellation clinched Central Catholic’s sixth straight Hoosier Heartland Conference championship.
