BLACK HISTORY MONTH KICKOFF

COLLEGE OF COASTAL GEORGIA ALUM, NOW GBI SPECIAL AGENT LAWRENCE R. HARRELL, II

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation recently graduated Class 54 of the GBI Special Agent Academy. Among the graduates was Special Agent Lawrence R. Harrell, II who is assigned to the GBI’s regional investigative office in Statesboro, GA.

Originally from Columbus, Georgia, Harrell graduated from Northside High School in 2013. He then earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Public Affairs in 2018 from the College of Coastal Georgia. SA Harrell now joins many other alumni from the College who also work for the GBI.

“My father inspired me to pursue a career in law enforcement from an early age,” said Harrell when asked why he wanted to become a GBI special agent. “Seeing both my parents humbly serve selfless careers led me to pursue my own path to protect others.”

Harrell’s father has been a Georgia State Patrol Trooper for over 40 years. His mother was a NICU nurse for over 40 years at Columbus Regional/Piedmont High-Risk Nursery.

Harrell stays motivated by the constant need to ensure justice and maintain the public’s trust in law enforcement. He looks forward most to working unsolved cases and bringing closure and answers to the families of the victims.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is comprised of three primary divisions: the Georgia Crime Information Center, the Crime Laboratory, and the Investigative Division. The GBI has over 900 employees.

Graduates of the College of Coastal Georgia’s Criminal Justice program have been employed by federal departments and agencies, including Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Customs and Border Protection, Transportation Security Administration, Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, United States Secret Service, and others, as well as numerous state and local departments, including Georgia State Patrol, Glynn County Police Department, Cobb County Police Department, Brunswick Police Department, and others. Other students have successfully entered graduate level programs or law school.

BUILDING THE FUTURE: COLLEGE COMMENCES CENTER, LOOP ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Construction on the new Center for the Arts has been well underway behind the Southeast Georgia Conference Center. The Center will feature an auditorium for 1,000 guests, professional level acoustics, and space to accommodate musical concerts, dance performances, lectures, meetings, and other community events. Many in the community consider the Center to be an opportunity to advance the economic viability of the area, intellectual capacity, and aesthetic appeal for generations.

You can watch the progress of the construction here on our live web cam.

In addition to the Center, is the construction of a loop road that will go through campus, connecting both sides together. The loop road starts within the President’s Gate along Altama Avenue, is planned to go through campus, and end near Coffin.
