Open Options/Life Unlimited are proud to partner with the Johnson County Park & Recreation District and be the Title Sponsor of the 35th Annual Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon. Open Options/Life Unlimited is a nonprofit organization that provides programs, services and resources for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the greater Kansas City area. For more information about Open Options/Life Unlimited please visit their website. This event features an Olympic triathlon, long distance triathlon, sprint triathlon, super sprint triathlon and a duathlon course inside Shawnee Mission Park. The Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon and Duathlon is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Athletes participate and compete in the age group division corresponding to their age on December 31st of this year (2019). Please read through the complete race packet for important race information.

ATHLETE ORIENTATION All new athletes are encouraged to attend this orientation at the marina parking lot on Saturday, July 6th from 3pm - 4pm. Orientation will take place near the white tent in the northwest corner of the marina parking lot. The Race Director will cover information including: parking, transition on race morning, swim start, du start, finish line and results.

1. Show photo ID. 2. Show USAT card (annual members only). 3. Pick up their own packet - not a friend, spouse, teammate, etc. 4. RELAY TEAMS: ALL team members must be present to pick up race packets. *We are not trying to make your life harder. These are the USAT rules and are enforced for your safety.

PACKET CONTENTS Your race packet will include the following: - Timing chip in white pouch - Race numbers: helmet sticker, bike tag, bib + safety pins - Swim Cap (must wear on race day) - Race t-shirt - Promotional items from sponsors

Gates to Shawnee Mission Park will open at 4:30am on Sunday, July 7th. Parking attendants stationed at the Theatre in the Park will direct you to a designated spot, this is to ensure everyone has a parking space. A shuttle bus will be available for spectators unable to walk. The bus will run from 4:30-6:20am and will resume after the last biker is off the course at approximately 10:00am.

Thank you for following the parking attendants’ directions when entering the park.

TRANSITION Transition will open at 4:30am when the gates to the park open on race day. It will close at 6:25am. Transition will reopen for athletes to remove their items starting at 9:30am. All athletes must get checked by staff before removing bikes/items from transition.

BODY MARKING Body marking will be located along the road leading into bike mount/ dismount near transition. Please stop and get marked when you arrive at the park on event day. Please see “RACE IDENTIFICATION” page for more information.

BIKE SUPPORT Please visit the team from Elite Cycling on the northeast corner of transition near bike mount/ dismount for any last minute mechanical support.

WATER STATIONS There will be 2 water stations near transition: one at swim exit and one near run enter/exit. There are 2 water stations on the short tri/du run course and 3 on the long tri run course. There is ONE water station on the bike course near mile 2.5 on the south side of the park. The bike course water station will not have cups, you’ll need to stop to fill your bottle.

SAFETY Unattended bags, outside of transition, will be checked by JCPRD Park Police and moved to the info tent.

TIMING & RESULTS Your timing chip is inside your race packet in a white envelope. Please wear your timing device on your LEFT ankle throughout the entire race. If you forget or lose your chip, please check in with the race management staff under the white tent in the northwest corner of the marina parking lot. Results can be printed near the white information tent. Times will be streamed live on the mtecresults.com website.

AWARDS Awards will be presented to the top 3 overall male and female athletes in each race. The top three males and females in each age group within each race will also receive an award. Teams will receive awards for the top 3 overall in each race. Awards will NOT be mailed - athletes must be on site to pick them up.

PHOTOS There will be multiple photographers on site. The race photos will be posted to the Facebook page via a link no later than July 10th.

T-SHIRTS If you need to exchange your t-shirt size, please visit the white information tent in the northwest corner of transition after the race to see if there are extra.

SWIM WARM UP

Warm up area is on the north side of the boat dock. Athletes MUST stay to the north (left) of the beach when swimming over. Do NOT swim to the south side (right) of the beach.

All bike courses will begin on the northeast side of transition and will ride counter-clockwise around the park. Slower cyclists must stay right. You will pass on the left. NEW: There will be ONE water station on the south side of the course. There will not be cups, you’ll need to stop and fill your water bottle.

Relays will start in their chosen heats (wave or time trial) along with the individual triathletes. Time trial format will have swimmers entering the water one at a time, every three seconds.

Time trial swimmers line up based on 100 meter pace time. Your time starts when you cross the timing mat just before you enter the water.

WHERE DO THE FUNDS GO? Consider the costs of everyday items for people with disabilities. Although many people with disabilities work and also receive government support to offset the cost of daily living expenses, these funds do not cover everyday things that help you enjoy life to the fullest. Donations of any size are a big help!

Bananas & oranges provided by Sprouts Farmers Market of Lenexa. Chocolate milk provided by Hiland Dairy. Bottled water provided by FedEx Ground of Olathe. Results receipts can be printed near the white registration tent. Awards will begin around 9:30/10am near the DJ.
