JCPRD offers camp programs for everyone! With 90 separate 2022 camps for ages ranging from 3 to 18, we’re confident we have something for everyone. Camp offerings range from fine and performing arts, nature, science, leadership, sports, and many more! There are four entirely new camps for 2022, as well as lots of new topics, ideas, and locations at many of our existing camps. Registration for JCPRD’s 2022 camps begins Monday, Jan. 24, and the sooner you sign up, the more choices will be available. Most full-day camps offer sessions beginning weekly from June 6 to Aug. 1 with other camps starting throughout the summer. Camps are offered throughout the county (see addresses on pages 25). Remember, don’t wait too long, or your child could miss out on some great summer experiences, as our camps are consistently some of JCPRD’s most popular offerings of the entire year, and many fill quickly. Financial assistance is available for some camps on a limited basis for qualifying families. For grant information and application materials, call 913-826-3014.
Several additional camps will be listed in our May through August program information, which you’ll find at JCPRD.com beginning March 18.

Time to start thinking about summer camps! Have you thought about what you’d like your child to get out of summer camp this year?
LEGO®, robotics, and more. Campers have the opportunity to try new skills throughout the summer.”
JCPRD’s programmers and camp directors have already put a lot of thought and planning into this year’s camp offerings.
“The instructors’ ability to be creative,” Town added. “At Sweet Summer Creations Camp, one minute we’re having relay races with canned biscuits, and the next the instructor is using her best Italian accent to teach a lesson on edible fishbowls. There was so much laughter and it was beautiful to see.”
“I want children to try new things, to discover new interests, to learn how to work and play together, and to feel safe and loved by our amazing staff,” said Children’s Services Manager Jennifer Anderson. “We want children to learn something new, meet new friends, challenge themselves, get connected with nature, and make memories,” added Outdoor Education Manager Andrea Joslin. “There are so many camps to choose from, really something for every kid.” “My number one objective for summer camp is to create an experience where kids not only have fun, they meet new people and form friendships,” said Recreation Assistant Misty Town.
“TimberRidge Adventure Center offers a hands-on experience for a variety of different outdoor skills to youth ages 11 and up,” added Outdoor Adventure Specialist Lysa Holladay Dvorak. “Our site offers many different outdoor opportunities allowing them to explore nature and hopefully develop a lifetime passion for adventure in the outdoors.”
can do at home and school,” Joslin added. “They get time to explore, use their imagination, and often say, ‘It’s like school, but fun!’ We have also had kids say, ‘At school I don’t have many friends, but at camp I am the cool kid!’” “I wish people knew how much our staff truly care about these kids and their families,” Anderson said. “They put their heart and soul into their programs because they love ‘their’ kids!” There’s also a lot for parents to love about JCPRD camps. “Parents like the face-to-face contact at check-in and check-out,” Town said. “They also enjoy seeing all the projects the kids make.” “Their kids are tired when they get home, are disconnected from electronics, are learning, and are having fun,” Joslin said. Remember, summer camps are consistently some of JCPRD’s most popular offerings of the entire year. The sooner you sign up, the more choices will be available.
“Kids love the opportunities to do something different than what they
With a myriad of summer options out there, what makes JCPRD camps unique? “What’s great about JCPRD summer camps is our ability to offer a robust variety of activities,” said Recreation Coordinator Lisa Eagle. “Animals, archery, chess, cooking, field trips,

Camp Director Diana Bliss loves summer camps as much as the kids do! If it were up to Senior Park Naturalist Diana Bliss, she’d be running youth camps all year long! “I think that it is essential to give kids an opportunity to be outside in the summertime doing ‘old school’ things, like catching frogs, swimming at the pools and beaches, building forts, and having supervised unstructured play - where they can choose their own activities,” Bliss said. “I am hoping that the time we spent was impactful enough that it generates a positive memory, is safe, and they cannot wait to come back.” “Diana has years of experience working with children in camps, challenge courses, preschool programs, history programs, and nature, wildlife, and outdoor skills programs,” noted Bliss’ current supervisor, Outdoor Education Manager Andrea Joslin. “Her experience allows her to be able to make camps both fun and educational as well as makes it easy for Diana to manage the day-to-day opportunities and challenges that camp brings. She is overflowing with creativity and loves nature.” This will be Bliss’ fifth summer as a naturalist working at the Outdoor Discovery Camp at Ernie Miller Park. She started with JCPRD about twelve years ago as a seasonal assistant director for the Outdoor Discovery Camp at Shawnee Mission Park, and went on to take on a full-time role as a program director for JCPRD’s Children’s Services Department’s Out of

School Time program between 2008-2012 and 20132017. While in that position, she was the outdoor camp director at Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #8 for seven summer seasons. In March of 2017, she took on her “dream job” as a park naturalist at Ernie Miller Nature Center in JCPRD’s Outdoor Education Department. Bliss holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture with a major in park management and conservation from Kansas State University. She also has a secondary major in natural resources and environmental sciences. In the summer of 2007, she interned at Rock Springs 4-H Camp in Junction City, Kan., and she held seasonal positions following graduation at the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, Kan., at the Wildwood Outdoor Education Center in La Cygne, Kan., and has been a challenge course facilitator at JCPRD’s TimberRidge Adventure Center. In 2016, she completed the requirements to be a Kansas Master Naturalist within the Kansas State Research and Extension program. In 2017, Bliss was nominated for “Kindest Kansas Citian” by a JCPRD Starside Elementary student. “I have made many friendships over the years with staff, participants, and program parents that I am still in contact with today,” she said. “I love the sense of working for the community and building long-lasting relationships. My original Starside Kindergartners are graduating in 2023 and we have stayed in touch over the years. I attend their games and programs, and one of them is even an assistant teacher for an Out of School Time site!”

2022 looks to be another busy year for JCPRD planning, design, and construction projects
Planned for 2022 are a variety of improvements to JCPRD parks and facilities, including several ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) improvements as well as studies, which pave the way for future projects. Here’s a brief synopsis and update on some of the projects planned for the coming year:
2022 Strategic Plan update Quite a bit has changed since JCPRD’s strategic plan (Legacy Plan) was completed in 2015. It’s important to reassess strategic plans every few years to keep them fresh and current in striving to meet the evolving needs of our community. Keep an eye out for public input opportunities towards this effort in 2022.
Mid-America
Sports Complex
Following completion in early fall 2021 of a $12 million Phase 1 of improvements at MASC, the $10.3 million Phase 2 is under way. These renovations will mirror Phase 1 with artificial turf installation and replacement of existing restrooms and concession areas on fields 5 through 8, construction of a new maintenance building, more improvements to utilities and paving, parking and lighting, and adding a turf warm-up and practice area. Phase 2 should wind down by fall 2022, with Phase 3 improvements following starting in late 2022 with another $9.12 million in projects. Opportunity for summer fun - Visit JCPRD.com/sports for information on summer league offerings
Antioch
Park Rose Garden Improvements
Meadowbrook Park Phase 2
JCPRD’s third inclusive playground will be the centerpiece of the next phase of Meadowbrook Park development which broke ground in November and is expected to be complete in late 2022. Inclusive playgrounds are designed to enable all children of all abilities to play together. There will be a specialty swing for individuals that use wheelchairs. All large pieces of equipment include shading elements, and there will be two large umbrellas with built-in water misters. In addition to the inclusive playground, Phase 2 developments will include a picnic shelter, restroom, and off-street parking. Opportunity for summer fun - Be sure to visit JCPRD’s other inclusive playgrounds located in Shawnee Mission Park and Stilwell Community Park
Meadowbrook Park Art Installation A striking and dynamic form based on the Kansas sunflower was selected in late 2021 as the inaugural site-specific public art piece to be placed in a JCPRD park. “Gateway” by Amie Jacobsen Art and Design was chosen by an art selection committee from among 146 concept submissions. Standing nearly 12 feet tall, “Gateway” will feature multiple brightly-colored and shaped petals made of cast glass and steel, and will glow in the sunlight as well as with lighting at night. The center of the flower creates an archway that beckons visitors to walk under the arch, where illustrated panels stretch from the floor up the interior sides, creating a tapestry that represents the history of the area of Meadowbrook Park and Prairie Village.
This project will renovate the garden and remove ADA barriers. Part of the project will involve removing the existing fountain and adding a pergola. This will expand the area for weddings while lessening maintenance issues. The wall currently to the north of the fountain will remain as a backdrop. The existing gazebo near the rose garden, which was donated by The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Johnson County in 2000, will also be repaired. Construction is expected to begin in spring and be completed later this year.

l A new entry plaza with a shelter and landscaping honoring JCPRD’s first superintendent, John Barkley, opened near Shawnee Mission Park’s 79th St. entrance.
l A new restroom was completed at the Shawnee Mission Park Off-Leash Area.
l Shawnee Mission Park shelters #5, #6 and #7 were replaced on the north side of the lake.
l At Heritage Park, a new paved trail measuring approximately 0.9 miles now connects Shelter #11 to Shelter #6, where it meets the existing paved trail.
Shawnee Mission Park Marina
Improvements to the Shawnee Mission Park Marina are scheduled to begin at the end of the summer 2022 season. They include a new building on the west side of the marina to house watercraft and implement better traffic flow for patrons, as well as a new ADA accessible low free board dock to more easily get patrons into their rentals, and installation of a new ADA accessible kayak/canoe launch east of the existing boat launch area. Opportunity for summer fun - Head to JCPRD’s beaches and marinas!
Other 2022 Projects l Replacement of the air-supported Roeland Park Sports Dome, on the grounds of the Roeland Park Community Center, is planned with completion anticipated in December 2022. l A Big Bull Creek Sunflower Trail study is currently under way to plan a 2.5-mile paved trail to connect the maintenance compound at 199th and Four Corners Road to develop- ments on Sunflower Road north of 207th St. It is anticipated some trail work may begin in 2022 and that this may be a multi-phase project, depending on study results.
Projects
l Phase 1 improvements at Ernie Miller Park were completed and involved replacing and improving the park’s outdoor amphitheater, adding an outdoor classroom on the pond just north of the amphitheater, and adding a new accessible parking area and bus loop closer to the nature center. Opportunity for summer fun - Experience the new outdoor amphitheater during the Friday Night Nature Programs! Details online at JCPRD.com/activities after March 18.
l At Arthur and Betty Verhaeghe Park, the existing playground was nearly doubled by the addition of play equipment for ages 2 to 5, and a small number of plots were completed for a community garden project.
Completed in 2021
l Following the completion and opening of the northern portion of the first phase of develop- ment at Cedar Niles Park in early 2021, the remainder of the 1,030-acre park opened in January. The park features 4-miles of paved trail, 4.4-miles of single-track hiking and mountain bike trail, three access points with water fountains, and a playground, medium shelter, and restrooms at the 135th Street access point. A ribbon cutting for the new park is being planned for this April.
