Molly Erwin brings a unique perspective to directing summer camp

Molly Erwin believes in the power of storytelling.

“I tell A LOT of stories,” says the director of JCPRD’s Merriam Park Elementary School Out of School Time Program. “The stories always pertain to something relative to whatever is being discussed. There are usually reasons why we have safety in mind at all times. But when kids ask questions, I really try not to say ‘no.’ Instead, I might tell a story of why we have rules in place, etc. so that they can understand.”

As she has since 2011, Erwin will be running the Crossroads Camp for ages 11 to 14 in Antioch Park this summer.

“Molly is one of a kind,” said Children’s Services Manager Jennifer Anderson. “Her ability to truly connect with people is a gift, whether it be with young children, teens, or adults. One of the reasons she is a great camp director is because she involves the campers in every aspect of the program. The kids know that it’s their camp and they really take ownership in it.”

“Molly gets consistent positive feedback every summer,” added Children’s Services Specialist Sebastian Parrish. “While some of the feedback is about the camp itself, a majority of it is about how happy and comfortable parents feel with Molly, and having their kiddos in her camp.”

“I believe that camps are a wonderful way for children to learn through nature, and away from technology, build relationships, make new friends, and have fun,” Erwin said. “There is a lot of creativity that goes on. I love the opportunity to plan fun programming with a variety of activities, going to the pool, and field trips every week. Sometimes, we have children help us think of activities or new games. The children and staff always leave with a memorable summer.”

Erwin holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northwest Missouri State University, and has worked for JCPRD since 2010 when she began as a lead teacher for the LEAD Camp program at Okun Fieldhouse for two years before becoming an OST director. She has worked at Rising Star Elementary, Riverview Elementary, and Starside Elementary schools in various capacities before accepting the director’s position at Merriam Park elementary in August 2022, where she also helps with Brookwood Elementary School’s Pre-K. In addition, Erwin assists JCPRD’s Special Populations Program as a guitar instructor.

She finds directing summer camp a welcome break from her usual routine during the school year.

“Outdoor summer camps, specifically, are much different than indoor school settings, in that we get to be outside of a ‘school environment’ and instead get to explore our own parks each and every day,” she said. “I personally love working at an outdoor camp, since I love the outdoors! At my camp, we do hiking, fishing, swimming, and have field trips each week.”

Kids and families can challenge themselves with great races planned for 2023

Two adventure races and a kids’ triathlon are returning in 2023, and all three events offer participants family-oriented opportunities to challenge themselves and meet goals.

The events include the Shawnee Mission Park Adventure Race on May 21, the JCPRD Kids Triathlon on Aug. 19, and the TimberRidge Adventure Race on Sept. 16. For details on these races, visit JCPRD.com/1315/Races.

“These events are welcoming to people of all ages and abilities, and the adventure races are a great way to explore parts of the park that you normally wouldn’t see on your own,” said Special Events Coordinator Katy Renner. “Youth triathlon is one of the fastest growing kids sports. What a great way to introduce your young athlete to the sport that could carry them into college and beyond!”

Both adventure races debuted in 2021 and offer participants of all ages two- and six-hour options. These events go on as planned, rain or shine.

Officials anticipate two-hour course competitors will expend six to eight miles of trekking (both hiking and running), while those on the six-hour course will expend ten miles of trekking, plus 20-plus miles of mountain biking, and one to two miles of paddling (canoe for teams and kayaks for individuals). There may also be surprise challenges along the way.

It is important to note that during the event, athletes will have access only to the gear, food, and drink that they carry on their bike or in their pack.

“People like the fact that the entire family can come out and compete,” Renner said. “Adventure

races don’t require you to complete the entire course, so you do what you want to do, which is very different than most other races. These races are so fun because the course changes every year.”

Now in its 10th year, the JCPRD Kids Triathlon is designed to let youth ages 14 and under be the stars. Young athletes compete in individual age groups in this race that is truly an event for all abilities.

“The kids tri really is a miniature version of an adult triathlon – we pull out all the stops and really make each and every kid feel special for accomplishing such a great task,” Renner said. “The community really rallies around this event and it’s evident on race day from the volunteers that are athletes themselves to the spectators that come out to cheer everyone on.”

To help young athletes prepare for the kids triathlon and other events, JCPRD also offers a Youth Triathlon Camp for ages 6 to 14. Renner serves as director for this popular camp, which is presented on four weeks between June and July and features Ironman World Championship Athlete and Coach Josh Wolf.

“Our triathlon camps are designed to provide a super fun, informative, and highly-encouraging atmosphere,” Renner said.

Aryeh Goldman looks forward to sharing many outdoor adventures at TimberRidge

During his first summer as outdoor adventure specialist at the TimberRidge Adventure Center, Aryeh Goldman will be watching for the “wows.”

“I am looking forward to the first time somebody says ‘wow’ at TimberRidge,” he said. “At the program that I (previously) worked in for a while, we used to call it the wow program, and the idea was that the criteria for success was when a participant said the word ‘wow’ out loud. So whether that’s outdoor cooking, or fire making, or climbing or something like that, I will be listening for the first time a person says the word ‘wow.’” Chances are, Goldman won’t have to wait long based on the many awesome camps planned at TRAC this summer.

Camps he will be running include: TRAC Amazing Adventures Camp for ages 9-14, TRAC Climbing & Rappelling Camp for ages 12-14, TRAC Fishing & Boating Camp for ages 12-14, and the new TRAC Survival Skills Camp for ages 9-14.

Goldman stepped into the outdoor adventure specialist position in midNovember after working as a Johnson County Park Police Officer for about a year. He brings 17 years of prior experience from the American Jewish University-Brandeis Bardin Campus, a 3,000acre facility in Brandeis, Calif., where he worked his way up from part-time outdoor educator to serving for 10 years as director of outdoor education. He grew up in Pennsylvania, but moved to Southern California at the age of 17. Goldman holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy from California State University Northridge, and a masters of arts in teaching from the American Jewish University.

“It’s a dream position for me,” he said of the TRAC job. “Basically, my entire career has been outdoor education, experiential education, nature skills, and survival skills. I think it’s got a lot of opportunities for me to work with a great team, and continue the good work that’s been happening, and continue to develop the property.”

The new adventure specialist has already instigated some changes for TRAC’s camp programs.

One of these involves extending the age ranges for several of the camps from 10 to 13 to 9 to 14.

“We wanted to capture a little bigger age group,” he said. “In the future, we are hoping to continue to bump that age range, and to continue to add camps and activities for younger participants.”

In the past, TRAC camp participants would be dropped off and picked up at Ernie Miller Park and taken by bus to TRAC. For this year’s camps, TimberRidge will be the drop-off and pick-up location, which will reduce congestion at Ernie Miller Park and allow increased activity time for participants.

“I know we’re asking more of people to do that,” Goldman said, “and it’s with the intention of getting more program time for the campers out there.”

See pages 22 & 23 for camp details.
