DESIGNING FOR COLLABORATION Creating a strong industry cluster required design strategies that promote collaboration through social interaction and flexible work environments. The social core--”the exchange”--is the heart of the park and provides an informal space to gather, eat, recreate, or share ideas. Adaptability strategies allow for blocks to be configured and occupied in many different ways, affording industries flexibility in how they define their personal research campuses in relation to other adjacent businesses. julie cprek // WORK SAMPLES// 5

THE PREMISE Located near two vibrant Chicago neighborhoods--the South Loop and Printer’s Row-- River South seeks to convert a centrally located, yet inaccessible site into a desirable new neighborhood to live, work, and play. RIVER SOUTH The design for the site focuses on increasing connectivity on and off the site, providing many unique housing options to accommodate people of all ages and economic standings, and reacquainting City residents with the Chicago River through engaging an active waterfront. julie cprek // WORK SAMPLES// 6

SUBSECTION: HOUSING FOR ALL The plan for River South was informed by studying population + market trends, as well as analyzing the built form in surrounding Chicago neighborhoods. River South is in a diverse neighborhood, with a growing population of both empty-nesters and young families. Decreasing vacancy rates continue to drive the price of housing up in the area as well. Therefore, this subsection of River South explores housing typologies that create opportunities for affordable housing, young professional housing, single family units, and senior-friendly units that exist in a less traditional neighborhood setting but with all the same components. julie cprek // WORK SAMPLES// 7

SPRINGWELLS SDG An inventory and analysis of roadway types, safety priority corridors and crash hot-spots in Springwells Village revealed the need for shortterm interventions and tools for long-term planning. This project demonstrated how the SDG can be used to transform Chamberlain Street as a short-term intervention, as well as a suitability matrix and illustrative appendix to guide community leaders in the future. julie cprek // WORK SAMPLES// 8

THE PREMISE Parkscapes plays with the idea of architecture as infrastructure. Located in Central Park, the project seamlessly integrates itself into the complex network of pathways and barriers. PARKSCAPES This project carefully considered the existing infrastructure of pathways in Central Park to provide unique experiences for recreation within the park. The project deliberately stitches across these different pathways without disrupting the existing circulation or flow. The pathways create opportunities to relax, play, or kayak on the reservoir. GALLERY INTERIOR
THE PREMISE The Artist’s Studio project explores principles of solid and void to define different relationships between public and private space within one building. FORM STUDIES The programmatic juxtaposition of both gallery and private studio requires the clever inversino of space in terms of wrapping interior and exterior public and private space around one another. Study models were creating by cutting out volumes in layered museum board and casting the void in concrete. The final product is a result of translating these solid-void relationships into architectural space.
