LETTER FROM the EDITOR To our wonderful readers: Shavuot is a time to celebrate receiving the Torah. We've counted up to this day and we're ready! We celebrate by pulling an all-nighter learning Torah and enjoy delectable dairy meals and beautiful floral arrangements. This "mini-mag" is a way to ensure you have new ideas for your meals with recipes brought to you by Artscroll's new cookbook, Dairy Made Easy. We teach you to adorn your home with flowers of all colors, literally! Arrange your bouquet in our budget friendly vases. Whe el of Flowers
Color scheme is an essential part of designing a flower arrangement. This Shavuot create an attractive bouquet using basic color theory principles.

Primar y2olors
There are three primary colors - red, blue and yellow. They are the key essential anchors on the color wheel. When mixed together in different proportions, they create secondary colors such as orange, purple, and green. Play around with primary colors to create vivid and striking flower arrangements.
Harm onious Colors
Colors that are next to one another on the color wheel will be visually pleasing. For example, orange harmonizes well with red and yellow in a mixed arrangement because it sits between them on the color wheel.
Tonal Value
Colors have a tonal value — lighter and darker versions of that color — which creates harmony and can influence the mood of an arrangement making it warmer or cooler, or gentle vs intense. Why not mix up your arrangement using the same color, but variations of tonal intensity. Vary your arrangements with pale and warmer blooms.
Contrasting2olors
Colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel work very well together. For example, the bouquets of pink and green look more vibrant, saturated and pure when placed together than if arranged separately. The opposite colors compliment each other very well.
The Rule s in P ractice
In general, most color combinations will work, but there are some that work better than others, such as purple, yellow, and red, or blue and yellow, or even green, purple, and orange. You want to make sure that your arrangements are not too confusing to the eye, which can lead to weakening your overall design. Think simple. A good guideline is to limit your arrangement to 2-3 harmonizing colors (that are next to one another) and 1 - 2 complementary colors (across from each other).

Baked Roasted
Veggie Pasta
Ingredients: 1 lb fusilli or penne pasta 2 pints cherry tomatoes, halved 2 red onions, cut into wedges 1 zucchini, cut into half moons
¼ cup olive oil ½ tsp garlic powder • kosher salt, to taste • coarse black pepper, to taste 6 oz feta cheese, crumbled 1 Tbsp chopped fresh or frozen basil
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prepare pasta according to package directions. 2. Preheat oven to 400°F. In a 9 x 13-inch pan, combine cherry tomatoes, red onions, and zucchini. Toss with olive oil and garlic powder. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Add pasta to vegetables and mix well. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Preheat oven to broil and broil for 10 minutes, stirring after 5 minutes. 5. Add feta cheese and basil; stir to combine (the heat will melt the cheese). Serve hot or at room temperature. Tips: You can add more veggies to the mix. We also love this pasta with red peppers instead of tomatoes. We made the pasta in this photo using broken lasagna sheets. Sour Cream Chocolate Chip Cake Batter:
1 cup sour cream 1 tsp baking soda ½ cup (1 stick) butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp almond extract 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking powder
Chocolate-Nut Mixture:
1 2 cups 1 tsp ¼ cup
(10-oz) bag chocolate chips coarsely chopped walnuts cinnamon sugar
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 10-inch tube pan. In a medium bowl, combine sour cream and baking soda. Sour cream should bubble and expand. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine butter and sugar. Beat until light and creamy. Add eggs and extracts. Add half the flour and baking powder. Add sour cream mixture, then remaining flour. Beat until just combined. Do not overmix. In a medium bowl, combine chocolate chips, walnuts, cinnamon, and sugar. Sprinkle some of the chocolate nut mixture into the pan. Add half the batter over it, then half of the remaining chocolate-nut mixture. Add remaining

Flower Besamim

Havdalah is the blessing we say to separate the holy Shabbat from the upcoming week. We traditionally smell spices such as cloves or cinnamon as part of the ceremony to cheer us up from the loss of our “extra souls� (neshama yetaira) which depart at the conclusion of Shabbat. Smell this adorable flower and get a whiff of besamim for havdalah. The cloves are in the center of the flower and are held in place with a cap of a pour spout.

WHAT YOU NEED:
• 2 cardstock or tag board flowers cut from pattern • 1 screw-on pour spout from orange juice carton (with cap) • Markers • Laminating machine such as Xyron Creative Station • Cloves • Scissors • Glue INSTRUCTiONS: 1. Print out the two flower templates and cut out the center hole from one of the flowers. Decorate the flower with markers. 2. Unscrew the cap of the pour spout and insert in the hole of the decorated flower. Screw the cap back on. The cap should be on the side that is decorated. 3. Laminate or add magnet backing to the flower with the Xyron Creative Station. 4. Embellish the second flower (the one without the hole) with leaves and laminate or add magnet backing. 5. Turn the decorated flower over and apply glue all around the back of the flower, including the flat back of the pour spout. Apply the second flower firmly, sandwiching the flat lip of the pour spout in between the layers. 6. When the glue dries, unscrew the cap and insert cloves. 7. For besamim holder, holes can be poked into the cap with a pen or a nail to allow the smell to come through without opening the top.

! t I e n u t r Fo Remember playing with the folded fortune tellers when you were little? When was the last time you picked one up and challenged yourself? We wanted to revive this wholesome activity by teaching our kids how to make and use the fortune teller. Insert your own final questions on the inside to create teachable moments or for basic classroom review. The fortune teller provides hands on learning fun, over and over again. How it works: 1. Click here to print the fortune teller template and cut to size. 2. Fold the four corners in towards the center so they meet and form a smaller square. 3. Flip your paper over and repeat step 2 until you have an even smaller square. 4. Fold the square in half and insert your index fingers and thumbs into the small pockets on the outside. Draw the center inward until the corners meet and form a point. How to play: 1. One player holds the fortune teller while the other player picks his/her fortune. Begin with the teller closed. Ask your child/student to pick a color displayed on the outside of the teller. 2. Open and close the center, counting as you go (top to bottom, then left to right), to correspond with the number of letters in the color chosen. 3. Have your child/student select a number from the inner options. That number will reveal the "fortune." 4. Lift the section that corresponds to the number chosen and read the fortune. In our game, the fortune will challenge the child with a thought provoking question or a simple review of material. You can challenge your child with: Mathematics: Review addition or subtraction or test your child on the multiplication tables. Jewish holidays: Holiday trivia is fun for all ages! Social skills/middot: Challenge older children to think critically about important interpersonal issues by asking WWYD (what would you do) questions. This can start some very important conversations. Example: You are playing at recess and see a classmate crying to the teacher. WWYD? Example: Your best friend asks you to write her assignment for her. WWYD? The questions can be tailored to children of all ages and social capacities. Reading skills: Ask your new reader to sound out words or identify letters.
