Community Involvement Preparing for life after college sports is a major focus of the Johnson C. Smith University Athletics program.

Student-athletes are given the opportunity to develop the foundation for a lifelong commitment to volunteerism through a variety of local organizations. In recent years, JCSU student-athletes have been actively involved in many community service activities, including Habitat for Humanity, Loaves and Fishes projects, and the Great American Cleanup.

to promote support amongst teams. The SAAC sends a representative to the CIAA-SAAC meeting each semester to discuss ideas with other schools in the conference.

Officers are elected each August.

Each year, all 13 JCSU athletic programs and cheerleading participate in group and individual community service activities. The Golden Bulls have participated in projects ranging from planting trees and tutoring school children to visiting nursing homes and serving meals to the homeless.

Being a student-athlete at Johnson C. Smith University is much more than just games and practices. Serving the community is an important part of each student’s life at Johnson C. Smith University. Student-athletes find that participating in community service activities is a great way to help others and gain valuable leadership skills.

Student-Athlete Affairs (SAA) The NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs unit provides life skills support in the areas of academics, athletics, personal development, career development and service through the distribution of accessible resources, strategic partnerships and customized programming at little or no expense to member institutions. Student-Athlete Affairs programs, resources and events are designed to promote the wellbeing and development of student-athletes and to provide on-going education and training to athletics professionals who identify and serve student-athlete needs.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committe (SAAC) offers student-athletes the opportunity to enhance their experience as Golden Bulls through leadership opportunities. The SAAC is an organization comprised of student-athletes from all varsity teams as JCSU. The goal of the committee is to inform all student-athletes, through their team representatives, of what is going on in the athletic department as well as campus-wide issues that directly affect the student-athlete. Season Preview

Season Outlook - Rebuilding Excellence The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University embark on a journey to rebuild a squad that lost four seniors, including two All-conference performers and three of their top scorers. Head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. has won two of the last three CIAA Championship and is use to replenishing talent after being at the helm as head coach for 23 seasons.

“We have a lot of new additions this year and we’ve recruited young men that we hope to become outstanding studentathletes for us (JCSU),” said Joyner. “We’ve enjoyed some success over the years, but our last two teams had large groups of seniors, which means we’re starting new in a lot of aspects.”

There will be a few familiar faces, including the team’s third leading scorer and top three pointer shooter, Ronald Thornhill.

Thornhill is a 5-foot-10 shooting guard from Alberta, VA, who averaged 13.2 points per game and made 82 3-ptrs shooting 40 percent.

“We’re really hoping Thornhill will come forth this season and showcase his leadership ability,” commented Joyner. “He’s been our scorer in the past, but we’ll need contributions on several levels this year.”

Also returning in the backcourt are senior guard Ryan Carter and junior guard James Otey. Carter, a 5-foot-11 Charlotte, NC native played in 28 games last season and started in 13. He led the team in assists with 105. Carter will be transitioning over from football season; he is currently the JCSU starting quarterback.

Otey saw action in 28 games last year and started in 15. He is known for being an accurate three-point shooting, despite only averaging 2.6 ppg last season.

Returning in the frontcourt will be senior forward Earl Jackson, junior forward Michael Cooper, and sophomore forwards Calvin Smith and Delonta Boyd. Jackson, a 6-foot-6 native of Temple Hills, MD averaged 5.3 minute per contest in 23 games played last season. Jackson can be a strong defensive presence in the post and capitalizes on limited opportunities.

Cooper, a 6-foot-8 post from New Rochelle, NY, has progressed each season at JCSU. Last season, he played in all 28 games and has worked this offseason to improve his footwork.

Smith, a 6-foot-6 native of Auburn, AL, played in 25 games last season, but only averaged five minutes per contest.

Boyd, a 6-foot-6 native of District Heights, MD returns to the squad after only seeing action in eight games during the first semester. Boyd scored 31 points in those games and has become more leaning since last season after dropping 15 pounds.

New to the Golden Bulls are two transfers and six freshmen.

Transferring in will be junior forward Terrell Barrett and sophomore guard Trevin Parks. Barrett, a 6-foot-6, 225 lbs, native of Farmville, North Carolina, is transferring into JCSU from Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, FL. While at TCC, Barrett received All-conference honors as a starter

for two consecutive seasons. Barrett averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists in his senior season at Farmville Central HS. Parks, a 5-foot-9, 165 lbs, native of Hickory, North Carolina, joins the Golden Bulls after seeing limited playing time as a freshman at UNC-Charlotte. Parks was the NCBCA District 10 Player of the Year and averaged 24 points, three rebounds and five assists his senior season at Hickory.

The incoming freshmen including forwards Robert Williams, Antwan Wilkerson, Terrance Hampton, Zachery O’Brien well at guard will be Richard Daniels, Jr. and Thaddeus Williams.

Williams, a 6-foot-4, 190 lbs, native of Atlanta, Georgia, was listed on the Prep Zone as one of the top 50 offensive players for high school students in the state of Georgia. Williams led Sandy Creek High School in scoring, assists, and rebounds his senior season. Wilkerson, a 6-foot-6, 205 lbs, native of Greensboro, NC, averaged 18 points and nine rebounds in his senior season at Western Guilford HS. Wilkerson earned All-conference and All-area first team honors as a senior. Hampton, a 6-foot-6, 230 lbs, native of Charlotte, NC, averaged 22.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in his senior season at Providence High. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Hampton was the fourth player to score 1,000 points at Providence (1,115 career points).

O’Brien, a 6-foot-3, 190 lbs, native of Warren, NJ, set a county record by scoring 552 points in his senior season at Watchung Hills Regional HS. O’Brien was offensive player of the year, AllState, and first team All-County. He averaged 19 points and nine rebounds in his final season. Daniels, a 5-foot-10, 180 lbs, native of Winston-Salem, NC, averaged 20 points, 10 boards, and six steals in his senior campaign at Carver HS. Williams is 6-foot combo guard from nearby Salisbury, NC. Williams enrolled last season, but this will be his first season on the court.

“We’re looking to develop the program into a national championship contending team, but that takes all parties being focused and on the same page,” said Joyner.

“Competitiveness has shown upward mobility and institutions strategically plan to win the CIAA. Winning is no easy task, but one that can be accomplished with hard win, determination, and focus.”

Johnson C. Smith will begin home action as host of the JCSU Tip-Classic on November 20th versus Washington Adventist University at 8:00 p.m.

J.C. Smith begins CIAA play on December 13th when they host St. Paul’s College at 7:30 p.m.

The CIAA tournament begins at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. on Feb. 28.

JCSU Athletic Facilities BIDDLEVILLE PARK Biddleville Park (opened 2000) features seating for 250 fans, complete with dugouts and lights. The park is opened in agreement with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation.

COLEMAN/CUTHBERTSON TENNIS COURTS The 250-seat Dr. Winston Coleman/James O. Cuthbertson, Jr. Tennis Courts are home to the men’s and women’s programs at JCSU and has six lighted courts. There have been 14 conference championships won between both outstanding coaches.

IRWIN BELK COMPLEX The Irwin Belk Complex at Johnson C. Smith University, which features an Olympic-size track with an eight-lane Mondo surface, bleacher seating for approximately 4,500 and high-tech academic facility, has been open since January 2003 and is already receiving a major workout. The complex hosted the 2007 & 2010 NCAA DII Outdoor Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships. The infield was recently named after Eddie C. McGirt for the works of the legendary coach who coached the Golden Bulls to 118 victories (most in school history). Because it sits just under the beautiful Charlotte skyline and tight off the highway, it’s facility for everyone to see and enjoy.

JACK S. BRAYBOY GYMNASIUM The Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium is exclusively the home for the JCSU volleyball and both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. It is known for energetic and boisterous home crowds that provide incredible atmosphere and home-court advantage. The court in the gym has been named for longtime head men’s basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. Brayboy Gymnasium is the premier gathering place for JCSU fans to cheer on the Golden Bulls. The crowd acts as the collective Sixth Man during basketball contests and regularly helps the team destroy opponents left and right.

Fact, the “Brayboy Madness” is famous—Sports Illustrated named it “One of the Loudest Gymnasiums in the Country.” The Golden Bulls field NCAA Division II contenders on a regular basis in both the men and women’s leagues. In 2001, the NCAA Division II Basketball Regional were held inside Brayboy. JCSU students and fans alike have a great time at Brayboy gymnasium...especially when their team wins, which they usually do.

PRACTICE FIELD The practice field opened in the fall of 1999 and sits adjacent to the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. It takes less than two minutes to walk from the football locker room in the Jack S. Brayboy gymnasium to the practice fields. Daniels as a team captain was named all-conference, most valuable player, and student-athlete of the year. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Hampton was the fourth player to score 1,000 points at Providence (1,115 career points). Parks was the NCBCA District 10 Player of the Year and averaged 24 points, three rebounds and five assists his senior season at Hickory. He was a three-year varsity letter winner for head coach Shawn Johnson. Stephen Joyner, Sr. Head Coach JCSU, 1973 • 24th Season at JCSU

Stephen Joyner, Sr. is in his 24th season as head coach of the JCSU Golden Bulls men’s basketball team. A native of Winston-Salem, NC Joyner’s success in basketball began at Atkins High School where he was the second leading scorer on the 1969 undefeated North Carolina State 4-A Championship Team. With a stellar high school career, Joyner became the star point guard for the Golden Bulls from 1969-73.

After a stint as an assistant coach at Virginia Union University, he received his first head coaching position with Smith’s women’s team in 1980, building the Golden Bulls into one of the CIAA’s most competitive programs.

He guided the women’s team to its first appearance in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Tournament. To get there, Smith won its first CIAA Southern Division Championship and finished second in the conference tournament. After compiling a 92-87 record with the women’s team, Joyner took over as the head men’s coach in 1987. For over two decades, he has taken the men’s program to unprecedented levels, establishing Smith as one of the most feared teams in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. His career record is 420-245 (as of 10/07/10).

Throughout his 23-year tenure as coach, Joyner has collected numerous accomplishments during his career.

Joyner is the winningest men’s basketball coach in Golden Bulls history, having recorded over 400 victories. He led the Golden Bulls to the CIAA Western Division Title in 1992, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. In 2000, his team finished fourth in the CIAA, third place finishes in 1991, 1993 and 2003, second place finishes in 1992, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Coach Joyner has captured the CIAA

Tournament Championship in 2001, 2008, and 2009. He was selected as the CIAA Coach of the Year and (1992, 1997, 2001) and NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2001.

In the 2000-01 season, he led the team to victory in the Harbor City Classic in Baltimore, Maryland, the Legacy Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, the CIAA Western Division Championship, the University’s first ever CIAA Tournament Championship, the University’s first ever NCAA South Atlantic Regional Championship and first appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight National Tournament held in Bakersfield, California. His Golden Bulls completed their historical season by being ranked #10 in the final NCAA poll and #2 in the Final Sheridan Broadcasting Network poll of black colleges.

In all, Joyner has taken the Bulls to seven CIAA Divisional Titles and has produced 25 All-CIAA performers and five All-Americans, many who received those honors multiple times. In addition, his up-tempo style produced JCSU’s top two career scorers, Columbus “Green Light” Parker and Mark Sherrill, who now serves as Joyner’s top assistant coach at Smith. Joyner is an active member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Coaches Association (CIAA-BCA) and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Joyner is an NCAA Division II Congressmen and member of the All-American Committee. He previously served as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) South Atlantic Regional Ranking Committee. He serves as a member of the McCrorey YMCA Board.

The Bulls success on the court is matched by the success of the student-athletes in the classroom. Joyner strongly believes that students who excel in academics give him an advantage as a coach. “Watching an athlete mature is an accomplishment in its self,” said Joyner. “When athletes graduate, you know that you have developed the student spiritually, physically, and mentally.” Under Joyner, Smith consistently ranks at the top of the CIAA cumulative grade point average. At Smith, where academics are always priority, Joyner is a vindicator for education first for all players. Joyner earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Johnson C. Smith University and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Virginia State University.

Joyner and his wife Narell live in Charlotte, North Carolina.

They have two sons and a daughter: Steve Jr., who serves as the top assistant women’s basketball coach at Florida A&M University, Brian, and Janel, a graduate from The University of North Carolina. The Joyners are also the proud grandparents of a baby girl (Alicia).

Mark Sherrill First Assistant

Mark Sherrill begins his 18th season as the top assistant coach for his alma mater.

As a student-athlete at Johnson C. Smith, Sherrill was a four year letterman and completed his basketball career ranking second in all-time JCSU scoring with 2,552 points.

He is currently sixth in all-time CIAA scoring. Sherrill was recognized as All-CIAA “Rookie of the Year” in 1989 and an All-American and All-CIAA athlete during the 1990-92 seasons. As the assistant coach, his main duties with the team include development of post players, scouting, and recruiting.

During his 17 years along side head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr., Sherrill has helped the Golden Bulls men’s basketball team reach new heights. JCSU captured the CIAA Western Division title in 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The 2000-01 season proved to be magical when Johnson C. Smith won the CIAA Western Division Championship, the University’s first ever CIAA Tournament Championship, the University’s first ever NCAA South Atlantic Regional Championship and first appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight National Tournament held in Bakersfield, California. Sherrill’s contributions have guided the Golden Bulls to three CIAA Tournament Championships (2001, 2008, 2009).

Sherrill earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from JCSU in 1992. He currently resides in Charlotte, NC with his three children: M.J., Stephen and Stephanie.

Sherrell Purcell enters her fourth season as the men’s basketball team manager.

Purcell faciliates various aspects of the men’s basketball program.

Purcell is a senior Social Work major from Raeford, NC. Upon graduation, she aspires to work in a social work agency and pursue a master’s degree. In her spare time, she enjoys hanging with her friends, shopping, and texting on the phone.

On December 27, 1892, Livingstone College and then Biddle Memorial Institute, (Johnson C. Smith University) played in the first black college football contest in snows of Salisbury, North Carolina, just two days after Christmas. Dr. Ronald Carter President of Johnson C. Smith University

Dr. Ronald L. Carter, a native of High Point, N.C., became the 13th president of Johnson C. Smith University on July 1, 2008. With more than 30 years serving students and universities, Dr. Carter brings an impressive record of community leadership, academic administration, and budget management to the position.

Upon graduating magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and philosophy from Morehouse College in 1971, Dr. Carter began his distinguished career at Boston University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Center, where by 1981, he rose to become the school’s youngest dean of students. While at Boston University, Dr. Carter pursued graduate studies, earning both a Master of Theology degree and a Ph.D. in philosophy of religion. In the late 1980s, Dr. Carter’s interaction with relatives of Nelson Mandela compelled him to put his abilities to work in South Africa.

Prior to Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 and the abolition of apartheid, Dr. Carter was named senior administrator of the Health Services Development Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. The program he served was dedicated to improving the health of local communities through the development of model approaches based on primary health care principles and decentralized rural health systems. Within five years at the university, he again defied the status quo by becoming the school’s dean of students— and one of the first black administrators at the traditionally white institution. As dean of students, he created and received funding for the Wits Black Schools Partnership Programme that brought the university together with more than 4,000 high school students to enhance learning in township schools that were disadvantaged by apartheid. In addition, he helped raise $500,000 to support an initiative between the BookSmart Foundation and the university to provide five computer centers and more than four million books to children, schools, and libraries in South African townships.

Dr. Carter returned to the United States in 1997 as the provost and dean of faculty at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. His almost 11-year tenure at Coker College included key roles in the private liberal arts college’s strategic planning, academic and student development, financial management, and fund-raising.

At Coker College he created a Distinguished International Visiting Scholars Program and a Distinguished Lecture Series.

He also provided guidance and oversight for the college’s Center for Leadership and Community Development, which partnered the college with community-based organizations, governmental departments, and funding organizations. A conceptual

framework he worked with at Coker College for assessing and evaluating student learning outcomes in general education has been published in Assessing Student Learning in General Education.

His many community involvements have included serving as ethicist for the Pee Dee Regional Center Ethics Committee, chairman of the Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, member of the Greater Timmonsville Friends United Board of Directors, chair of the Darlington County Habitat for Humanity board, first vice-president and director of education of the Palmetto State and Baptist Convention, member of the Pee Dee United Negro College Fund Advisory Board, member of the Coastal Carolina University Dalton and Linda Floyd Mentoring Program Advisory Board, and vice president of the Hartsville Rotary Club.

With research and teaching interests in the areas of medical ethics, ethical theory, and philosophic-religious issues, Dr. Carter has held faculty positions at both Coker College and Boston University. While at Boston University, he was director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Career, Educational and Counseling Services and served as senior editor of Debate and Understanding, a scholarly journal for the study of minority Americans’ economic, political, and social development.

His expertise in medical ethics and community involvement have brought him several national appointments, including moderator for the National Meeting of the Medical Institute for Sexual Health (2004-2006), chair of expert panel for the Connecting Parenting Adults and Youth Project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2006), and chair of expert review panel of scientific measurement for an abstinence rating tool funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2007). He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs in South Africa and in the U.S., discussing educational issues and policies.

Among his many honors and awards, Dr. Carter was appointed a Sloan Scholar at Morehouse College, a Danforth Fellow at Boston University, and a Merrill Scholar, Robert College, Istanbul, Turkey. He was a senior fellow at the Stedman Graham Leadership Institute of Chicago, and nominated by South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges to serve as a member of the John De La Howe School Board of Trustees.

In 2006, Dr. Carter was the recipient of the 2006 South Carolina Dance Association President’s Award for promoting and supporting dance in South Carolina. He was recognized in the 2005/2006 edition of Blackbook as an outstanding citizen who is making a difference in Eastern South Carolina.

Since becoming president, Dr. Carter has become very involved

in the Charlotte community. Currently, he is a board member with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Charlotte Street Car Advisory Committee, Charlotte Center City Partners, Charlotte Museum of History, and Foundation for the Carolinas.

He is the father of a daughter, Tumelo Rosalind Carter, and has been the foster parent of four other children.

Stephen Joyner, Sr.

Stephen Joyner enters his sixth full season as Johnson C. Smith University’s Director of Athletics, a position he has held since April 1, 2005. Joyner previously served as the University’s assistant director of athletics. He also holds his longstanding position as JCSU Men’s Head Basketball Coach.

“In my role as Director of Athletics, my primary focus has been and will continue to be the day-to-day operations and supervision of the departmental staff, while striving to promote effective communication amongst JCSU faculty, staff, studentathletes, alumni, media, and the general public,” says Joyner.

JCSU has enjoyed unparalleled success under Joyner’s watch. During the 2005-06 season, JCSU won three CIAA Western Division Championships. The Golden Bulls claimed CIAA titles in men’s tennis, women’s basketball, and men’s basketball. In addition to a strong year in the CIAA, two Golden Bulls teams advanced to NCAA post-season competition (men’s and women’s basketball). Men’s and women’s basketball repeated this success during the 2007-08 season and again last season, when both teams captured the CIAA Tournament Championship (2008-09).

Along with their excellence on the field, JCSU student-athletes have reached new heights in the classroom during Joyner’s tenure at the helm of the athletics program.

Since his arrival, nearly 200 student-athletes have received their undergraduate degrees, half have graduated with honors, and several have gone on to pursue graduate degrees. The Class of 2010 Valedictorian and Salutatorian were studentathletes from the men’s tennis team and women’s track and field, respectively.

The Salutatorian has been student-athlete three times from the previous four graduating classes.

During the 2008-09 season, Joyner earned his 400th career coaching victory, his third CIAA Tournament crown (2001, 2008, 2009), and he was named Athletic Director of the Year by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Joyner recently completed his 22nd season as head coach of the JCSU Golden Bulls Basketball Team. His career record is 420-245. A native of Winston-Salem, NC, Joyner was the standout point guard for the Golden Bulls from 1969-73. For more than two decades, he has taken the men’s program to unprecedented levels, establishing J.C. Smith as one of the most competitive teams in the CIAA and NCAA DII basketball.

Joyner earned a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Johnson C. Smith University and a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University. Joyner and his wife, Narell, live in Charlotte, North Carolina. They have two sons and a daughter: Steve Jr., who serves as the Head Women’ Basketball Coach at Winston-Salem State University, Brian, and Janel, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Interim Senior Woman Administrator Vanessa Taylor is entering her first year as the Interim Senior Woman Administrator and entering her 10th season as head coach of the JCSU women’s basketball program. Prior to her joining the Golden Bulls staff, Taylor compiled an 83-95 record over seven years at Elizabeth City State University.

Fulmore brings experience from Towson University where she served as the assistant director of compliance services since 2007. Prior to her stint at Towson, Fulmore was the compliance assistant at Morgan State University from 2005-2006.

The Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) is the highest ranking female in each NCAA athletic department or member conference.

The designation of SWA is intended to encourage and promote the involvement of female administrators in meaningful ways in the decision-making process in intercollegiate athletics. The designation is intended to enhance representation of female experience and perspective at the institutional, conference and national levels and support women’s interests. Her daily responsibilities can include any department tasks and must include senior management team responsibilities.

In nine seasons as head coach of the Lady Golden Bulls, Taylor has guided her team to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship game on four separate occasions. JCSU finished as runners-up in 2003, 2006 and 2008; then captured the first ever women’s CIAA Tournament Championship at Johnson C. Smith in 2009. Thus far, her career record at JCSU is an impressive 167-100 and 250-195 overall.

Emerald Fulmore Compliance Coordinator

Emerald Fulmore joined Johnson C. Smith in December 2008 as the compliance coordinator for the athletic department. She also serves the Lady Golden Bulls Head Volleyball Coach.

Fulmore brings coaching experience from her time spent as the head volleyball coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at Baltimore City Community College from 2006-2007.

Originally from North Carolina, Fulmore is a native of Lumberton, NC. She graduated from Winston-Salem State University in 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management and Business Administration. She received her Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Morgan State University in May 2009.

Lamont Hinson Sports Information Director

Lamont Hinson is within his second year as the Director of Sports Information at Johnson C. Smith University. He joined the Golden Bull family in January of 2009. The multi-faceted SID has added many new features to the department in the area of sports information. Thus far, the JCSU Athletic media functionality has expanded. The Golden Bulls now provides live webcasts of football, basketball, home track & field, and some special events through the official JCSU Athletic website www.goldenbullsports.com.

Prior to relocating to Charlotte, NC, Hinson served two years as the Assistant Sports Information Director at Fayetteville State University. Hinson also served the play-by-play announcer for volleyball and women’s basketball webcasts. He was the host during football season for the weekly coach’s show FSU Pigskin Press Talk as well as some other innovative ventures at Fayetteville State Hinson has covered Johnson C. Smith University athletics through a men’s and women’s basketball CIAA Championship seasons, hosting the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and the launch of the Commemorative Classic (annual football clash between JCSU and Livingstone College).

A native of Fayetteville, NC, Hinson graduated cum laude from Fayetteville State University in 2003 with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration. He later earned a Master’s in Business Administration and in Sports Management from Barry University in 2006.

Tim Botic begins his sixth season as a member of the Golden Bulls athletic training staff. This is his second season as the head athletic trainer; Botic spent the previous four seasons as the assistant athletic trainer. Botic was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI.

He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Athletic Training. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he received a master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science. While at UNCG, Botic worked as a graduate assistant at Greensboro College for two years. He enjoys woodworking, hiking, backwoods camping, reading and riding his Harley. He is a certified and licensed athletic trainer (ATC, LAT) and is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). He, his wife Katie, and daughter Isabella make their home in Charlotte, NC with their two dogs, Ruckus and Melee.

Faculty Athletic Representative Deborah Brown Quick, Ph.D was appointed Faculty Athletic Representative for Johnson C. Smith University beginning in the 2010-2010 academic year.

As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Johnson C. Smith University is required to designate a faculty member as Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). The Faculty Athletics Representative plays a key role in the oversight of the intercollegiate athletics program by providing a voice that reflects traditional faculty values to ensure the academic integrity of the program and the welfare of student-athletes.

She is also Associate Professor of Sociology and presently serves as Chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She is married with one child.

Kathryn Hanes-Romano enters her second season as the assistant athletic trainer on the Golden Bulls athletic training staff. Hanes-Romano attended Greensboro College, where she earned a bachelor of science in Athletic Training in 2006.

Dr. Antonia Mead currently serves as the advisor to the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) her at JCSU. Mead has served as an Assistant Professor of Health Education at Johnson C. Smith University since 2005. She is also a Faculty Liaison for the Smith Institute for Applied Research.

She also earned a professional certificate in Nutrition for Optimal Health, Wellness, and Sports from North Carolina State University in 2007. Prior to joining the JCSU family, Hanes-Romano served as a certified and licensed athletic trainer for The Running School in Swan Lake, NY, Southeastern Orthopedic Specialists in Greensboro, NC, and Carolina Physical Therapy in New Bern from 2006 to 2008. She is currently a certified and licensed athletic trainer (ATC, LAT) and lifeguard/swim instructor. She and her husband, Victor, live in Lake Wylie, SC with their two dogs, Chip and Wilson.

She received her Ph.D. in Health Education & Health Promotion from the University of Alabama, a M.S. in Human Movement Science, and a B.S. in Biology both from the University of Memphis. CHES certified (Community Health Education Specialist), her research interest include minority health, college student health, and faith-based initiatives.

Previous employment includes program coordinator for a teen pregnancy prevention program, community outreach program coordinator for a non-profit organization, research assistant, and communications/marketing intern.

In addition to the SAAC Advisor, she is advisor for the Zeta Xi Chapter of Phi Epsilon Kappa. Involvement in professional organizations includes American Alliance for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), the American Academy of Health Behavior (AAHB), Eta Sigma Gamma, and Phi Epsilon Kappa. Service/ volunteer activities include United Negro College Fund, Antioch MB Church, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

CIAA Basketball History in the Making The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is the oldest African-American athletic conference in the United States. Founded in 1912 on the campus of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), the CIAA embodies a history rich in tradition which epitomizes the fortitude of its 10 colleges and universities.

When the conference was founded it was originally known as the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Its founding fathers were Allen Washington and C.H. Williams of Hampton Institute; Earnest J. Marshall of Howard University; George Johnson of Lincoln University (PA); W.E. Atkins, Charles Fraser and H.P. Hargrove of Shaw University and J.W. Barco and J.W. Pierce of Virginia Union University.

Student-athletes who compete in CIAA basketball this season continue a legacy of excellence that culminated in a competitive frenzy that began a half century ago.

That culminating event was the first CIAA basketball tournament. Today, it is highly regarded as model for sports promotion.

The first CIAA tournament was held at the end of the 1945-46 season in Turner’s Arena in Washington, D.C., where the North Carolina College men’s team reined victorious over that inaugural tournament. Lem Graves, who chronicled the tournament’s events for a weekly newspaper, wrote that it was the “all-time sports thrill of a lifetime.” Graves should receive a chorus of affirmation.

The CIAA, which is comprised of 13 member institutions: Bowie State University, Chowan University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Lincoln University (PA), Livingstone College, Saint Augustine’s College, Saint Paul’s College, Shaw University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, and Winston-Salem State University, is divided into Northern and Southern Divisions, and sponsors sixteen annual championships. The men’s championships are football, cross country, basketball, indoor track, golf, outdoor track, baseball, and tennis. The eight women’s championships are cross country, basketball, indoor track, outdoor track, softball, volleyball, bowling and tennis.

CIAA teams are recognized as national contenders in sports. In basketball, Virginia Union won NCAA Division II national titles in 2005, 1992, and 1980. North Carolina Central University (former affiliate) also won the national championship in 1989. CIAA basketball teams have appeared in the NCAA tournament each of the last thirty

years, and the conference has distinguished itself by having more teams compete for the national basketball title than any other conference at the Division II level.

Division rivalries and heroic finishes are CIAA hallmarks.

This season, more than any other, the legacy will surely continue…
