Head Coach Steven Aycock Steven Aycock embarks on his second season as the Golden Bulls’ head football coach. In his initial campaign, JCSU finished 3-7 with victories against Edward Waters, St. Paul’s, and Livingstone in the inaugural Commemorative Classic. Aycock has been apart of the JCSU football coaching staff for the past six seasons. Prior to taking over the program, Aycock spent the previous four seasons supervising football operations, recruiting, and coaching the offensive line. On January 28, 2009, Johnson C. Smith University President, Dr. Ronald L. Carter named Steven Aycock as the 20th head football coach in Golden Bull history. Aycock has over 15 years of coaching experience as an assistant and offensive lineman coach. He has brought enthusiasm, passion, tenacity, and a thorough understanding of football from various aspects. “I am ready to make Johnson C. Smith football a powerhouse in the CIAA and in Division II football,” says Aycock. “This is my opportunity to showcase my knowledge of the game and what I’ve learned through my coaching experiences.” As apart of the previous football coaching staff in 1996, Aycock helped the Golden Bulls orchestrate an impressive 7-3 record, the first time in 15 years that the program recorded a winning season. Aycock not only brings a new energy to Golden Bull football, but he symbolizes a new era at JCSU. He is determined to guide the program in the direction of conference championship contenders and an elite in Division II college football. Prior to this head coaching opportunity, Aycock

garnered experience as an assistant head coach, offensive lineman coach, and recruiting coordinator at JCSU (2005-08; 1995-97). He served in those same roles while at Savannah State University (1997-2000) and served as a student assistant at Tennessee State University (1994-95). Aycock is a 1994 graduate of Savannah State University, where he was a four-year letterman, an All-SIAC offensive lineman for three seasons, and a honoree for Offensive Lineman of the Year by the Black College Sports Pages in 1992. He holds a B.S. in Sports Production and earned a M.A. in Communications from Barrington University in 1999. A native of Atlanta, GA, Aycock is married to the former Ms. Donyell Stroud and resides in Huntersville, NC.

With the 2010 football season rapidly approaching, the JCSU Golden Bulls are faced with the challenge of overcoming three consecutive 3-7 finishes. Head coach Steven Aycock steps into his second year at the helm with more wisdom and a team ready to turn the corner. Aycock has also brought abroad experienced offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Maurice Flowers to coordinate the offensive this season. Some minor tweaks in coaching personnel and a squad prepared to progress should lead to a more successful outcome. “My coaching staff and I have definitely grown from this past season,” said Aycock. “Without a doubt my decisionmaking has improved and I feel better prepared to balance the demand of being a head coach with practices, game day preparation, meetings, and any media requests. I intend on being more hands on with the offense, but still allow my staff to excel in their duties.” The last winning season for JCSU was in 2006 when the team finished 7-4 and advance to the Pioneer Bowl. Since then the overall record has been 9-21, but the program has stayed committed to improving. The squad this year moves forward with the loss of 12 seniors from the previous season; most notably Michael Burroughs and Artis Carter on the offensive line.

Offense As usual, the focus will be on the man behind center. Senior Ryan Carter (5’11, 180 lbs, Charlotte, NC) started seven of the 10 games last season as a first time primary quarterback. He completed 97 of his 182 pass attempts

for 1,024 yards, including eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Carter was also the team’s second leading rusher with 399 yards on 103 attempts and four TDs. “We’ve brought in some other talent at the quarterback position, but the job is Ryan’s to lose and he’s a true competitor,” said Aycock. “He (Carter) did well during spring ball and we’ve seen him take steps towards becoming a better leader on and off the field.” The Golden Bulls are actively working on implementing a committee of ball carriers to produce results on the ground. Sophomore Dedrick Anderson (5’4, 150 lbs, WinstonSalem, NC) returns as the starter after leading the team in rushing last season as a freshman. Anderson gained 456 yards off 100 carries with two touchdowns. He also had the second most catches with 18 for 131 yards. Though small in stature, Anderson has a knack for finding holes and an explosive burst which could lead to a big play at any time. Junior Archie Lee Barrow (5’10, 200 lbs, Winston-Salem, NC) should see ample time in the backfield this season. Barrow played in six games last season with 152 yards off 31 carries and two touchdowns. Expect to see him more involved in the offense this year. Redshirt sophomore Joshua James (5’11, 220 lbs, Varnville, SC) has asserted himself into the running back rotation with a strong work ethic in the offseason. James did not receive any carries last season, but look for him to make a splash this year. All-CIAA standout receiver Jeremy Franklin (6’3, 200 lbs, Casselberry, FL) prepares to lead the receiving core in his senior campaign. Last season, Franklin led the team in

receiving yards (610), kick return yards (628), and all-purpose yards (1,381). He also made 48 receptions and scored five touchdowns. Franklin is on pace to become the all-time leading receiver at JCSU, he currently has 2,331 yards. “Jeremy has made a tremendous leap as a leader and has shown much better character as a student-athlete,” said Aycock. Junior Rico Poole (6’1, 175 lbs, Atlanta, #80 Jeremy Franklin GA) will most likely line up as the other primary receiving target this season. Last year, Poole caught 17 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He has had an impressive offseason and stood out during spring ball. Other notable receivers were sophomores Nick Mata (5’9, 185 lbs, Tampa, FL) and Matthew Jeffries (6’3, 190 lbs, Gainesville, GA). Last season, Mata and Jeffries combined for 12 catches and 58 yards with limited time of the field. “Although we’re young, I expect us to be somewhat better on the front line,” said Aycock. “Guys like Geno Barnett (6’4, 345 lbs, Spring Lake, NC) have got to step up, but we’ve also brought in some impressive recruits to help our offensive line improve.”

Defense “The defensive side of the ball looks to be the more consistent side coming into the season,” commented Aycock. “Players like Quintel Talton (6’3, 240 lbs, Columbia, SC), who played and produced as a true freshman are a bright spot. Michael Coats, Phillip Devore, and Perrin Carr have grown into a talented cohesive linebacker unit. Those guys coupled with the senior leadership of Michael Morgan (5’11, 190 lbs, Sumter, #54 Michael Coats SC), who has the determination of a lion set us up to defend well in the second tier. The linebackers accounted for a great deal of the defense’s success last season. Coats was the second leading tackler with 50 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two pass break-ups and one fumble recovery. Devore was not too far behind with 45 tackles, an interception, and one fumble recovery. Carr recorded 39 tackles, five tackles for a loss, and one forced fumble. Morgan contributed with 43 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, a sack, and fumble recovery of his own. #50 Michael Morgan

Once again the secondary possesses a skilled and experienced bunch. AllCIAA senior safety Lawyer Montgomery (6’2, 195 lbs, Buffalo, NY) returns as a captain after a team leading 82-tackle season. Montgomery also led the team in interceptions with three, along with three tackles for a loss, five pass break-ups, and one force fumble. Also at safety is senior Andre Saxon (6’1, 185 lbs, Greenwood, SC), who racked up 46 tackles, three #7 Lawyer Montgomery tackles for a loss, two INTs, and two break-ups last year.

The cornerback rotation will consist of junior Darius Johnson (5’11, 190 lbs, Atlanta, GA), senior Girard Miller (5’9, 170 lbs, Winston-Salem, NC), and junior Lamarr Person (5’8, 155 lbs, Atlanta, GA). Miller led the group with 40 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. Person recorded 19 tackles with two interceptions, five break-ups, and two fumble recoveries. Johnson switched from safety to corner last season and gathered 18 tackles and one break-up in seven games played.

#15 Girard Miller

“Our secondary isn’t the biggest, but we have a lot of quickness, especially at corner,” said Aycock. “I know we’ll be challenged through the air and I think our secondary will respond. We’d like to play more man coverage this season based on our personnel.”

Special Teams Last season, senior Julius Wright (6’0, 175 lbs, Fort Worth, TX) handled the kicking responsibilities as the place kicker and punter. Wright converted on six of his 11 field goals attempted, including a school record 52 yard field goal. Wright also kicked 54 punts; 16 inside the 20, six touchbacks, and five fair catches averaging 37.3 yards per punt. University of Tennessee transfer Tyler Rabb (6’4, #18 Julius Wright 225 lbs, Shelby, NC) will take on some of the kicking duties this season. Rabb has showcased a strong, accurate leg this spring sessions. “There are three facets to the game of football and I am sure that our special teams unit will put us in some great positions to win ball games,” mentioned Aycock. Johnson C. Smith will open the season on the road against Elizabeth City State University on August 28th.

2010 JCSU Football Schedule The 2010 Johnson C. Smith University football schedule has been released listing the time, dates, locations, and opponents for the Golden Bulls upcoming season. The ten-game schedule will feature seven conference games, three non-conference match-ups, and one Division I opponent. JCSU finished 2-5 in the CIAA last season and had an overall record of 3-7. “This schedule will certainly be challenging, but we are building a program that will not only be able to face adversity but preserve and succeed through it,” said JCSU Head Football Coach Steven Aycock. “Despite our record last season, we’ve made a positive imprint and progressive results will be seen this year.” JCSU will open the season on Saturday, August 28th against Elizabeth City State University at 6:00 pm in Roebuck Stadium (Elizabeth City, NC). The Vikings handed J.C. Smith a big loss (51-10) on McGirt Field last season. However, Johnson C. Smith was victorious over the Vikings (30-6) in their last visit to ECSU back in October 2002. Elizabeth City finished last season 7-4, including a trip to the Pioneer Bowl against Tuskegee. Following the ECSU game, JCSU will travel to Durham, NC to take on former CIAA foe North Carolina Central University in a rare Thursday night game (September 2nd) in O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. This will be the first meeting between the Golden Bulls and the Eagles since 2006, NCCU’s last season in the conference. NC Central currently competes in the NCAA Division I-FCS and leads the series 48-18-3. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm. The Golden Bulls will host their home-opener against West Virginia Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 11th at 2:00 pm in the Irwin Belk Complex (IBC). This will be the second all-time meeting between the two institutions. Both opened the 2009 season against each other with WV Tech snatching a 49-39 win in Montgomery, WV. West Virginia Tech competes in the NAIA Mid-South Conference and coming off a 3-8 finish last season. On Saturday, September 18th, J.C. Smith will host the Tornadoes of Brevard College at 2:00 pm on McGirt Field. This will be the first time the two teams have met. Brevard finished 7-4 last season and 3-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. After an open week, Johnson C. Smith returns to the Irwin Belk Complex for back-to-back conference games. First, a 6:00 pm match-up versus Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, October 2nd. The Rams are returning to the CIAA this season after being a part of the NCAA’s Division I Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) since 2007. The following weekend will feature a 2:00 pm match-up against Shaw University on Saturday, October 9th. The Golden Bulls will be

looking to extract some revenge after a 50-0 loss to the Bears in Raleigh, NC for the 2009 season finale. JCSU leads the series 29-18-2, but Shaw has won in the last three meetings by big margins. J.C. Smith heads to Richmond, VA on Saturday, October 16th to face Virginia Union University at 1:00 pm. The Panthers earned a 34-14 victory at the IBC. This series dates back to 1926 with VUU leading 27-8. Johnson C. Smith will return home on Saturday, October 23rd for their homecoming clash with St. Augustine’s College. The Falcons slid past the Golden Bulls (27-9) last season in Raleigh, NC. Johnson C. Smith will be looking to celebrate their first homecoming victory since 2008 and their first under Coach Aycock. The Homecoming game will kick off at 1:00 pm on McGirt Field inside the Irwin Belk Complex. On Saturday, October 30th, JCSU will travel to Fayetteville, NC to square off against the defending CIAA Champion Fayetteville State University Broncos. Last season the Golden Bulls held a 12-7 lead over FSU at halftime, but eventually dropped the contest 30-12 in the second half. JCSU leads the series 33-22-2, but have a 1-9 record against FSU in their last 10 matchups. In the season finale, JCSU will face Livingstone College in the second annual Commemorative Classic. The Commemorative Classic acknowledges, promotes and celebrates the contribution of these two institutions to the historical and cultural significance of the first Black College football game played in the United States back in 1892. JCSU brought home the Commemorative Classic trophy with a 30-15 victory over the Blue Bears in Salisbury, NC. This season’s game will kick off on Saturday, November 6th at 1:00 pm in Charlotte, NC. Location is to be determined, but it will be either at the Irwin Belk Complex or Memorial Stadium.
