WILLIAM D. UNDERWOOD
University President
P
resident Underwood has led Mercer during a period of dynamic growth and development for the University. Since his arrival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by over 20 percent to more than 8,400 students. Mercer has launched its second and third medical school campuses (Savannah and Columbus), initiated a master’slevel physician assistant program and a doctoral-level program in physical therapy and added Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology, Nursing, Counseling, Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction. Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer now meets the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for classification as a research-doctoral university. Over the past five years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to more than 240, while the amount of annual externally funded research expenditures has grown to approximately $30 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance.
The University has intensified its longstanding commitment to servicelearning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitalization of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission program, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009 and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. In 2008, the Baylor Alumni Association presented him with its W.R. White Distinguished Service Award. An elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation, President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

HEAD COACH BOBBY LAMB
HEAD COACH BOBBY LAMB BORN Dec. 24, 1962 HOMETOWN Augusta, Ga. WIFE Allyson Acker CHILDREN

COLLEGE Furman (B.A., 1987) Furman (M.Ed., 1992)
HEAD COACH BOBBY LAMB
A
fter a 70-year hiatus Mercer University named Georgia native Bobby Lamb as its 19th head football coach in program history beginning July 1, 2011. Born in Augusta, Ga., and raised in Commerce, Ga., Lamb joined the Mercer coaching ranks after nine successful seasons as head coach at Furman University and a 29-year overall relationship with the Paladins’ football program as a player, assistant coach and head coach. “Bobby Lamb embodies the goals and direction we set for the reinstatement of football at Mercer University,” said President William D. Underwood. “His track record in recruiting and coaching young men who are serious studentathletes is well established. He brings the kind of integrity and character that will mold young men into leaders.” Lamb’s Furman teams posted outstanding academic credentials. In the seven seasons since the NCAA instituted the Academic Progress Rate (APR) monitoring system – which tracks eligibility, retention and graduation – Furman’s program produced the highest APR scores among Southern Conference schools. Likewise, Furman football had the SoCon’s top results on the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) with a score of 97 percent in 2009-10. “In searching for a head coach to reestablish the football program at Mercer, we looked for traits such as strong leadership, strong character and the ability to understand the goals and objectives
for the program set forth by President Underwood and the Board of Trustees,” said Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole. “Bobby Lamb quickly rose to the top of our search list. His athletic success is just icing on the cake compared to what he brings to the table as a person. He is a winner by every criterion.” During his tenure guiding Furman’s program, Lamb had a 67-40 record (.626) as its head coach. He led the Paladins to winning records in eight of his nine seasons and made four trips to the NCAA I-AA (now Football Championship Series) playoffs, reaching the quarterfinals in 2004 and the semifinals in 2005. His 2004 squad won the SoCon championship and Lamb was tabbed as the league’s Coach of the Year. He also produced three runnerup, two third-place and two fourth-place SoCon finishes during his tenure. Lamb’s Paladins achieved national rankings of No. 5 in 2004 and No. 3 in 2005. Including his 16 seasons as an assistant coach – where he spent the majority of his time as the passing game coordinator and working with quarterbacks – Lamb’s Furman teams compiled a composite record of 193-105-3 (.646) in 25 seasons. When you factor in Lamb’s four seasons as a quarterback for the Paladins from 1982 to 1985, when Furman was 39-101, his aggregate won-loss record jumps to .667. In 29 seasons on the collegiate gridiron, Lamb has only been involved with three below .500 campaigns. As a player at Furman, Lamb was a part of three SoCon championship teams and three NCAA I-AA playoff berths. As a senior, he was the SoCon Player of the Year, the NCAA I-AA passing efficiency national leader and led the Paladins to an NCAA I-AA national runner-up finish. He is also a member of Furman’s Athletics Hall of Fame. “I have been very impressed with President Underwood and Athletic Director Jim Cole and the vision and leadership they are providing at Mercer,” said Lamb of his decision to come to the Macon institution. “One of the qualities that most attracted me to Mercer was their emphasis on the true student-athlete. I have spent the past 29 years at an institution with very similar expectations. “Sometimes the term student-athlete is used nonchalantly. People forget that it is student first and athlete second. I

have always stressed the importance of academics before athletics as a player, coach, and father. I believe my philosophy for building strong men who will become leaders in their communities, will be a perfect fit with Mercer. “God has provided this tremendous opportunity for me to assist in the reinstatement of football at Mercer. I look forward to leading Mercer football to the top.” Lamb is a 1982 graduate of Commerce (Ga.) High School and went on to earn his B.A. in health and exercise science from Furman in 1987. He also earned his M.Ed. degree from Furman in health and exercise science in 1992. Lamb, who was born on Christmas Eve in 1962, is married to Allyson Acker. The couple has two children: a daughter, Sallie (20), and a son, Taylor (18). After disbanding its football program following the 1941 season, Mercer will officially begin play again in 2013 as an NCAA Division I non-scholarship program. EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Grant Cain Recruiting Coordinator/Inside Linebackers Co-Special Teams Coordinator Grant Cain begins his first season as the recruiting coordinator, inside linebackers coach and co-special teams coordinator at Mercer University in 2013. Cain comes to Mercer after a seven-year post at Coastal Carolina University, holding various positions on the Chanticleers’ staff. His stint at Coastal Carolina began in 2005, when he was hired as a graduate assistant coach under then-head coach David Bennett. He parlayed his role as a graduate assistant coach into a full-time coaching position in 2007 after graduating with a master’s degree in instructional technology. His appointment as outside linebackers coach ushered in an era of consistency on the defensive side of the ball as the team ranked among the nation’s top-23 programs in tackles-for-loss (TFL) in 2007, led the conference in TFL in 2008 and paced the league in sacks in 2009. In 2010, Cain was promoted to coach both the defensive ends and outside linebackers, and continued to produce immediate dividends in his assigned defensive areas. Despite suffering a season-ending injury to preseason all-conference selection Quinton Davis, Cain helped develop senior DE Kent Harper from a third-string backup into one of the league’s premier defensive players. Harper finished the 2010 season with an average of 10.0 tackles per game, ranking third among Big South players and 16th-best in the nation before landing All-Big South Second Team honors. Cain’s time at Coastal Carolina saw the team reach unprecedented success, capturing Big South Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Overall, his work helped the Chanticleers rack up a gaudy 47-33 overall record, while becoming a perennial league power with a 22-13 Big South record. During more than seven seasons at Coastal Carolina, Cain also contributed instruction for the special teams units and inside linebackers. Prior to his time at Coastal Carolina, Cain spent the 2005 spring and summer seasons as a defensive assistant with the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football league. His efforts helped lead the Crush to its first AFL title in the franchise’s third year of existence. Cain’s playing days saw him earn team captain honors in his senior season at Catawba College, an NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference. During his four seasons as a student-athlete, the Indians made national playoff appearances every year. A 2003 graduate of Catawba with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Cain is married to the former Shauna Koontz. The couple has two sons, Caleb and Samuel.

Rick Cameron Voice of the Bears Rick Cameron, the “Voice of the Bears”, is in his ninth year calling play-by-play and will lead the broadcast team as the Mercer football program ends its 70-year hiatus and returns to action in 2013. Cameron, who is also Mercer’s senior assistant vice president for marketing communications, returned to the broadcast booth in 2006 after originally doing radio play-by-play in the late 1970s. He was the longtime public address announcer for both men’s and women’s basketball, as well. Cameron is the Marketing Communications liaison for the School of Medicine and the Athletics Department.
Roger Jackson Color Commentator Roger Jackson begins his first season as the color commentator for the Mercer University football radio broadcasts. Jackson brings a wealth of football knowledge to the radio booth on both the collegiate and professional levels. After starring as a two-sport athlete in football and track and field at nearby Central High School, Jackson attended Bethune-Cookman University, where he served as a four-year starter as well as team captain his senior year. Upon graduation, Jackson signed a free-agent NFL contract with the Denver Broncos in 1982. The Macon, Ga., native played in 53 games over five seasons with the Broncos.

ATHLETICS TRADITION
Mercer History
Mercer University is a longstanding member of NCAA Division I athletics. The school is a founding member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, for which 16 of its 17 intercollegiate teams will compete during the 2013-14 academic year. Mercer first fielded an athletic team in January 1892, when its football team played the University of Georgia in Athens. It was the first college football game played in the state and one of the first in the Southeast. Mercer, in the fall of that year, would defeat Georgia Tech in its first football game ever. The Mercer football team will play its 2013 campaign as a member of the Pioneer Football League – the nation’s only nonscholarship NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. In 2014, football is included in the entire athletic department’s shift into the Southern Conference. Only men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and sand volleyball will continue competition in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Mercer University Athletic Department is to develop well-rounded student-athletes academically, athletically and socially. The program is committed to integrity, sportsmanship and equal opportunity for all students and staff.
Academics
Mercer athletes are true “student-athletes” with emphasis placed equally on performance in the classrooms as well as on the playing fields or courts. In the 2012-13 academic year, 70 percent of Mercer student-athletes were named Atlantic Sun All-Academic selections, while Will Betts (men’s soccer) and Derrek Workman (baseball) were named first team Academic All-Americans.
Hall of Fame
The Mercer Athletic Hall of Fame now consists of 140 members. These men and women made invaluable contributions to the University either participating as a student-athlete, coach or in some other athletic-related capacity.

PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE
T
he 2013 season marks the 21st year for the Pioneer Football League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The PFL is one of only two conferences that sponsor football as its only sport (the Missouri Valley Football Conference being the other). However, the PFL is a truly national conference with members on each coast and throughout the nation’s heartland. The league still retains four of its charter members – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University and Valparaiso University, plus the University of San Diego (joining in 1992) – which were joined in 2001 by Davidson College, Jacksonville University and Morehead State University. Campbell University joined the PFL in 2008, its first season of intercollegiate football. Marist College, which joined for the 2009 season, further extended the league’s footprint into the northeast. In January 1991, the NCAA passed legislation to require Division I institutions to sponsor all intercollegiate sports at the Division I level. The five charter members (Evansville the fifth before dropping football in 1997), each dedicated to the enhancement and sound management of intercollegiate football as an integral part of the student-athletes’ collegiate experience, joined together to form the Pioneer Football League. From the league’s inception it has been a proponent of the creation of a non-scholarship football classification within Division I and adopted the moniker of Pioneer based on the intent to become the first league in that new division. The PFL’s original membership was comprised of NCAA Division I universities that previously sponsored intercollegiate football at other levels. In recent years, the league has attracted those institutions committed to the principles of the PFL model when beginning their football program, including Jacksonville, which started its program in the non-scholarship mold in 1998, and Campbell, which did so in 2008. In 2013, the league expanded its footprint in the Southeast when Mercer University and Stetson University – which each restarted long dormant programs – joined the league. The PFL began play in 1993 with Dayton winning the league’s first crown. The league spent its first season in 1993 under the administrative guidance of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the office moved to St. Louis in 1994, when current commissioner Patty Viverito was named the PFL commissioner, a leadership position she continues to fill.

THE MErcer EXPERIENCE... A
s one of America’s oldest and most distinctive institutions of higher learning, Mercer University’s mission is to teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to inspire, to empower and to serve. In fulfilling this mission, the University supports undergraduate, graduate and professional learning, as well as basic research and its application in service to others. Founded by Baptists in 1833, Mercer is an independent university that remains grounded in a tradition that embraces freedom of the mind and spirit, cherishes the equal worth of every individual and commits to serving the needs of humankind. With more than 8,300 students enrolled in 12 schools and colleges on campuses in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah, Mercer has a strong presence in Georgia. However, its more than 68,000 alumni are making important contributions to their professions and communities around the world. Mercer is consistently ranked among the nation’s leading institutions by such publications as U.S. News & World Report, which named the University the No. 1 value in the South in 2012 and No. 6 on its list of “up-and-coming” schools.
CAMPUS LIFE Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the graciousness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do. The University offers a wealth of fascinating experiences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to performing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organizations to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.
RESIDENCE LIFE The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development of life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhancing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students this is the first time they have lived away from home and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family. All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times and students use their identification cards to gain access into their residence hall.
