PERSPECTIVE 1 The main pedestrian public passage between the entrance and the public plaza is a connection between two contrasting programs of public gym/hurricane shelter and youth hostel. The idea behind the design is to create an open, light, and friendly urban space for the users to explore and connect with the materialty and inviting spaces.

SITE CONTEXT The building’s proximity to downtown would make it a prime destination for tourists allocation as well as very accessible shelter in a crowded part of town. The highway entrance to downtown is a block away meaning supplies, and refugees can access the building easier.

N SITE The building is located in an urban site within the historic district of Savannah, Georgia. This area is very highly restricted by code as it is meant to respect its surrounding historic architecture. The public path and plaza of the building connects two major streets in the area, MLK Boulevard and Montgomery Street, providing safe circulation for pedestrians.

PERSPECTIVE 4 The private courtyard is exclusive for the guests staying at the hostel. The operable shutters open up from the inside to create union between the interior and exterior spaces. There is a secondary entrance to the hostel and access to the terrace bar.

LONGITUDINAL SECTION

Located in the Historic District of Savannah, Georgia, this hurricane shelter / youth hostel works as an urban hub that seeks to activate tourism, youth culture and community. Made mostly out of concrete, this building is built to last through time and natural disasters. A public plaza at the North East corner of the site connects two major streets with a pedestrian passage and a flexible space that allows for social gathering and day to day activities. The connection between two contrasting programs happens through the terrace spaces that provide both visual as well as an experiencial bond between the two spaces. The gymnasium, which also works as the main shelter space is illuminated by modular concrete panel skylights that provide indirect light which also gives it a peaceful environment in case of emergency.

This project was elaborated in order to submit it as an entry for this year’s Outer Space Architecture Competition (OSAC 2020) by Blank Space. The deliverables consist of combining 5 immersive renders/compositions with an 800-1400 word fictional narrative which aims to leverage the scientific advances being made today to create fantastic visions to the near future. With two other colleagues, we took on the challenge of completing our entry for this competition within a timeline of 3 weeks till the deadline. Our take on this facinating topic consists of a dystopian future where science is left behind, and space exploration becomes underground. With the paraterraforming of Mars in process, EXODUS, the rogue science group based under the glaciers of Iceland, is working on a procedure of doing the same, but with humans. After a series of events unfold, Olafur, our main character, volunteers for the Exodus procedure of human body modification. This process is performed by Artificial Intelligence and through a cyber-embryotic process, making him the first (modified) human being to be able to breathe the air of “the new Mars”. The following five renders where created entirely by us. WIth a week of planning and ideation (pen, hand, google) , a week and a half for design and 3d modeling (Brains, imagination, Rhinoceros 6.0, 3ds Max) and half a week of post production (Lots of Coffee, Vray, Photoshop). We managed to produce five immersive images and an equally immersive narrative. The quotes underneath the renders are excerpts of the essay. I am awaiting the results for the competition, which come out in November 2020, so please, send good energy! Enjoy!

STAGE 1 In the present day, the ice layer in Antarctica is 1.609 meters thick. Water collection and treatment is critical in the process of glacier melting in order to prevent it from mixing with salt water. The structural base absorbs all melting water for building use.
STAGE 2 This stage represents the duration of the ice melting process due to climate change. Adjacently, the interactive structural base of the building will slowly unveil as the ice melts.
ELEVATION
STAGE 3 The ice melting process is now complete. Efforts to collect most water have now become secondary, it’s time for the extraction of living units and the development of the new community in Antarctica. The base now serves as a central core for the expanding population.

PHASE OF HORROR If we think about extinction, we are categorizing it as something horrible, something depressing, a form of grief. That is the phase we currently find ourselves in. Trying to save something that we think exists, but we don’t really understand. Sustainability implies that all things are able to remain

constantly present, but how can we try and control something so complex, so ephemeral, that we can’t even categorize. Is a forest still a forest if we chop down a single tree? What if we chop many trees and leave only two standing? Is it still considered a forest as the global term? ”. Or we might as well build
houses around it and it will have the same effect as this “forest”. The phase of horror we currently find ourselves in is the anxiety/urge to save nature as we know it or as we have objectified it, trying to ultimately avoid the inevitable phase of darkness.

PHASE OF DARKNESS One can find light in darkness. The interpretation of existence and origin gets to a certain point of weirdness that it eventually makes you smile. Why does darkness have to be depression? Why can’t it be weird? To the extent that it gets so ridiculous it makes you smile.

Smile for the fact that we are alive, we are strange, and we are as real as a sentence or as an action. . Whatever is here right now might not be the same tomorRow, or might not be here in ten years. Architecture, or this building to be precise, will remind people that life is a paradox
and that things can be designed to serve a purpose, but with time this purpose can eventually morph into a feeling, and this feeling can later become a thought, the thought that we are here now, and we should appreciate our existance by living life at its fullest.

ID The ID is the section of your subconscious that contains your most darkest desires. The surface of this space is unstable, unpredictable, unusual. This represents how segregated we are from this section of our mind and how we don’t really understand where these impulses come from.

SUPEREGO The superego is the section of our unconscious mind that strives for perfection. Whenever you are performing something or any action at all, the superego is impulsing you to do it in the best and fairest way possible. This space is composed by a guided symmetrical path that gives you the chance to go exactly where you want to go, in the most efficient way possible.

POLYSEMIC 1 There is no specific explanation to this drawing as it is completely open to experiential interpretation. What does this make you feel? What details can you find within the composition that make you curious? How do you percieve this space?

POLYSEMIC 2 A polysemic drawing is a nonarchitectural way of portraying architecture. It is the intent to express the experience of a space, of an idea of a concept. A polysemic is a compilation of graphic elements that come together to convey infinite perceptions.

Located at the epicenter of the Electric light District in Tokyo, Japan, the Spectorium is an introspective experience that allows the user to escape the toxic paradigmas of society. Throughout the ligament structures that connect the ego tower to the surrounding buildings, a soft and white form, almost human like, attracts the thousands of pedestrian into the subconscient underground. After experiencing the depth of their own human mind, the building lets the users out into a level of decompression in order to later be reincorporated to society completely renewed as people.
