STRYKER Location: 1901 Romence Road Parkway, Portage, MI Size: 125,000 Square Feet Completed: Autumn 2014 Role: Architecture Team Lead at Shive-Hattery
Having renovated one quad of the large Romence Road complex a few years earlier, the owner-client along with Stryker (Fortune 500 Medical Technology Firm) sought to expand their office space into a second quad of the building. Our main architectural challenge was how we could bring as much light as possible into an existing structure that has square footprint of 60,000+ square feet. By opening up the corner with a large curtain wall and placing two 30 foot by 30 foot skylights over two story lobbies, we dramatically changed the feeling of the interior.

WALTON ISAACSON Location: 325 North LaSalle Drive, 5th Floor, Chicago, IL Size: 19,500 Square Feet Completed: Winter 2015 Role: Architecture Team Lead at Shive-Hattery
Walton Isaacson’s previous office was spread out across multiple floors, which made the staff feel disconnected. Therefore, Walton Isaacson sought to create a united workplace that supported internal engagement, collaboration, and encourage creativity for clients and team members. Known as “the planet’s most interesting agency,” it was important to reflect Walter Isaacson’s personality throughout the redesigned workplace. It was critical to learn about their workflow, as well as the experience they wanted to create in their new space. As a result, a single-floor space was designed with flexibility for growth. Diverse community nodes integrated within individual workspaces provide comfortable seating areas, tech community hubs and enclosed concentration zones. These spaces offer team members to choose a workspace that suits their workstyles and the tasks that need to be completed.

CROWE HORWATH Location: 225 West Wacker Drive, Suite 2700, Chicago, IL Size: 12,000 Square Feet Completed: Autumn 2015 Role: Architecture Team Lead at Shive-Hattery
Crowe Horwath was looking to consolidate staff from their Madison Street office into 225 West Wacker. To achieve this, we increased density by changing workstations from an orthogonal to 120 degree and offices from 150 sf to 120 sf. At the same time and equally important was increasing the amount of both open and enclosed collaborative spaces. This provided convenient enclosed workspace options when focus work or teaming space is needed. The additional open collaborative areas, critical in a denser workplace, reinforce socialization and knowledge sharing. Another goal was to create a more inviting lobby space which was accomplished with a lighter material finish palette.

VON MAUR Location: Oklahoma City, OK and numerous locations Size: 150,000 Square Feet Completed: Summer 2014 Role: Architectural Team at Shive-Hattery
The massive Von Maur department stores requires the collaboration of nearly 20 design team members. The high-end nature of these environments required clean and careful construction detailing. In order to achieve this high level of design, Jonathan was challenged with modeling and detailing some of the most sophisticated building elements for the Von Maur at the Quail Springs Mall, which included the central escalator lobby and roof cupola.

PNC BANK Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida Size: 2,500 Square Feet Completed: 2009 Role: Architecture Team at Gensler
Jonathan was fortunate to work at Gensler on the PNC Bank team, on about a dozen branches, all of which were LEED certified. While many of the branches were based on a prototype, there was one location that required a more intensive design phase. PNC challenged the team to design a net zero branch in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With solar energy as the center of design, a solar canopy captures solar energy while providing shade inside and below for a more pedestrian friendly streetscape. Planted with all native Florida species, the site is traversed by a ¼ mile path, where the community can actively enjoy and explore the native habitat.

SOUTH LOOP TOWERS Location: Chicago, IL Size: 1,000,000 Square Feet Completed: Conceptual Phase Only Role: Architecture Team Lead at Shive-Hattery
A broker from Vandon Forbes approached Jonathan with an exciting project. An investor from outside of Chicago was looking to develop a virtually vacant site with a new one millions square foot mixeduse project, that would include retail, a hotel, and condominiums. The following spreads are a collection from the presentation we prepared for the client. Unfortunately, the Alderman did not give our client a green light, tabling the project indefinitely.

SOUTH LOOP
TOWERS For decades, the South Loop, Bronzeville, and surrounding neighborhoods have been supporting the Chicagoland community with manufacturing plants and warehouses. As the city continues to transform, it is clear that the South Loop is on the verge of dramatic urban development, integrating layers of housing and retail vibrancy. The South Loop Towers' concept is a vision in response to this trend. Understanding the deep cultural and aesthetic nature of the neighborhood, the building design relates to the surroundings with its strong contextual retail base. Rising from the lower levels streetscape, the setback hotel and condominium towers add a tasteful modern flavor to the community skyline with their beautiful curves sprouting from a lush roof park. By respecting the past and embracing the present, the South Loop Towers are designed to plant a seed in the community for powerful social, economic, and environmental growth in the future.

BASIC MASSING The massing of the building is divided into three main forms. On the ground level, the retail-parking mass engages with the scale of the pedestrian traffic. The two towers separate the hotel and condominium / apartments occupancies.
MIXED-USE HOTEL CONDOMINIUMS / APARTMENTS RETAIL PARKING (EAST SIDE BASE)
FORM & ENTRY APPROACH The tower form is driven by functional sizes of living spaces scaling from a depth of 25 to 35 feet as the curve widens. The verticallity of the structure is emphasized by the illuminated / glass stair running up the towers. The towers spacing allows for two separate entries, one grand for the hotel and one modest, more private for the condos / apartments.
GREEN & PUBLIC SPACES While the building sits on a large lot, it is designed in a way that provides an immense amount of green and public space. This includes an urban plaza supporting the retail / restaurant spaces, a huge green roof park on top of the base building, green roofs on top of the towers, and a lookout restaurant and convention space about 30 stories high in the hotel.

SURFSIDE Location: 5815 N Sheridan Ave, Chicago, IL Size: 13 Stories | 188 Units Completed: 2021 Role: Architecture Team Lead
Prior to the transformation of Surfside, the building was a run down condominium building. At best, it was a “Type C” level building. We were tasked to reposition the building as an apartment building, elevating the property to “Type B+”. Ultimately, the team was proud to transform the building aesthetically to an A level building, energizing the lobby, units, fitness center, and beach-side deck.
