Economic Vitality
treeterville and the greater Chicagoland area consistently rank in the top market for domestic and international business and leisure travel with over 45 million annual visitors. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Chicago was the tenth most visited city in the U.S. by overseas visitors in 2009. Travelers come from all over the world to enjoy Streeterville’s award-winning restaurants, luxury hotels, bountiful shopping on the Magnificent Mile and world-class entertainment. In fact, Chicago boasts more Five-Diamond-rated restaurants than any other U.S. city and is the only U.S. city with four Tony award-winning theater companies, according to World Business Chicago. With over 9.6 million people, 4.5 million employees and more than 240,000 businesses, Chicago “has one of the world’s largest and most diversified economies, with a gross regional product of more than $475 billion. It is an efficient
8
economic powerhouse that is home to more than 400 major corporate headquarters, including 28 Fortune 500 Headquarters,” according to World Business Chicago. “Rated #1 Large U.S. Metro for Economic Diversity by Moody’s Investor Services, Chicago is a key player in every economic sector, from risk management innovation to manufacturing to information technology to health services.” (World Business Chicago) Not only does Chicago proudly stand as one of the world’s largest economies, but it continues to grow. Chicago continues to prove itself on the international economic stage. In 2009, Chicago Customs District traded a total of $128.3 billion with foreign economies, with over $30 billion in exports (Crain’s Chicago Business). Chicago’s economic vitality has been demonstrated through its ability to diversify and attract new industries. “In 2009, Chicago was top-ranked for Economic Potential among major
cities across the world and World Business Chicago identified more than 100 medium-sized new & expanded office, distribution/warehouse and manufacturing facilities announced, under development or completed in the metro area, representing a total of more than 11.6 million square feet and over $1.5 billion in economic development activity.” (World Business Chicago) Chicago is also paving the way as an environmentally-friendly, sustainable city. It “continuously ranks as one of the most sustainable cities in the country, with more LEED registered and certified buildings than any other city, 18 wind energy companies, a Top 5 Metro rating for the number of Energy Star rated buildings and an incomparable workforce - including more than 2,600 LEED credentialed employees. Combined with cutting edge research and development and wide-ranging incentives, Chicago is an ideal location for green companies to locate and grow.” (World Business Chicago)

Ronald McDonald House
®
is coming to Streeterville
I
n 2012, the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago will provide children access to the finest healthcare treatment available. When the hospital opens, tens of thousands of families will seek vital care for their children in this world class healthcare facility.
To serve these families, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana (RMHC®-CNI) will open a new Ronald McDonald House – the largest in the world – within blocks of Lurie Children’s at 211 E. Grand Avenue. This new House will be a place of care and comfort including 86 guest rooms, a rooftop healing retreat and a kitchen filled with home-cooked meals, all for a suggested donation of $10 per night. Designed to be a “homeaway-from-home”, the 14-story House will be a welcome place for families to return after a long day at their child’s bedside - a place where they can bond with others dealing with similar situations. A place where they can find support to be the best advocates they can be for their children. In addition to the House, the charity will
10
provide nine sleep rooms in the hospital to give parents a chance to get some rest, just steps away from the NICU. Doug Porter, CEO, says the House will meet the needs of the community. “Our objective is to keep families together during difficult times. The hardest thing to do is to turn people away when there is no room, but we believe that with this new House, we won’t have to. We also want them to be comfortable and provide an uplifting environment. We hope to be a source of pride in the Streeterville community and look forward to engaging Streeterville residents, businesses and organizations in the House.” The House is scheduled to open in summer 2012, and the charity is eager for Streeterville’s help in making this not only the biggest, but the best Ronald McDonald House. Volunteers are needed to serve as Family Ambassadors
and play a key role in welcoming and assisting guests. House Refresher and Home Improvement volunteers will keep the interior looking great, while Green Thumb volunteers will nurture the gardens on the rooftop retreat. First thing in the morning, or after a long day at the hospital, many families are in need of a home-cooked meal. “Meals from the Heart” volunteers will plan the menu, purchase the ingredients and prepare the meal in our full service kitchen. Family Program volunteers will provide daily activities at the House such as yoga, laughter therapy, story time, arts and crafts and so much more. If you would like to get involved or receive electronic updates, please contact Anne Czarnecki, Director of Programming, at aczarnecki@rmhccni.org. More information can be found at RonaldHouseChicago.org.
