P
lanning and executing a wedding reception requires many challenging decisions that begin with simply deciding where, what and when. When choosing where, keep in mind that a small group offers more choices of wedding venues. Groups of 100 or more guests are limited to just a few larger, quite capable facilities on the Island. If your guest list is long and you’ve selected a Saturday for your wedding, you should make ceremony and reception reservations at least nine to twelve months in advance. If you are having a smaller event, planning is much easier. If you and your fiancé plan to elope to the Island to be married, almost all of the bed & breakfasts, inns, and hotels on Mackinac can offer you last minute helpful service and advice. Larger hotels have on-site wedding coordinators you may consult who can take care of details at the hotel, or you
can hire a professional coordinator to completely handle all of the details from beginning to end. Start by making some calls or emails to get initial information and availability, then things will quickly begin to fall in place. Each hotel offers its own unique features and loca-

The Island House Hotel overlooking the east end of the marina is one of the most charming Victorian hotels on the Island. Todd Callewaert and his family, who own and operate this classic landmark hotel, suggest treating your guests to a cocktail reception on
their delightful verandah overlooking the harbor and marina. “It’s a beautiful setting with a spectacular view, in the traditional Victorian style our hotel maintains. We are the oldest operating hotel on Mackinac Island, dating back to 1852,” says Mr. Callewaert. Lunch or dinner for up to 180 guests is offered in the elegant 1852 Grill Room. For receptions with up to 50 guests, choose the private Webster Room for a meal service creatively tailored to your specific requests. Both Island House dining rooms are also ideal for rehearsal dinners the night before the ceremony. For a more casual reception or rehearsal dinner, the Ice House Restaurant located at the Island House will accommodate up to 40 guests for dinner offering a full bar and charming ambiance. he rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family the night before the big day, and Mackinac offers a variety of venues to set the tone for a perfect evening. Nearly all of the Island's fine dining establishments can host your rehearsal dinner in style. For a truly unique Mackinac experience, treat your wedding guests to The Cannonball at British Landing. Located at a beautiful outdoor location far from the hustle and bustle of the busy downtown area, The Cannonball provides special opportunities for an evening to remember. Imagine your guests climbing aboard a horse-drawn wagon for a scenic ride along the Island's serene shoreline. With a State Park permit, wedding ceremony can take place on the Cannonball's tranquil beach with the iconic Mackinac bridge as your backdrop. Follow with a sumptuous buffet style reception, or a more casual BBQ dinner. At the end of the event, gather your guests for a hayride along the shoreline road back into town while taking in the water views and the cool summer breeze off the lake. You can even bring your own beverages along with you for the ride! For more information contact Jack Armstrong at 906-847-0932. For couples wanting an elegant venue, consider the classically beautiful Harbour View Inn. Tucked away from main street next to Ste. Anne's Church, the Harbour View has many advantages for couples wanting a gracefully refined rehearsal dinner. The charming dining room accommodates from 20-50 people comfortably and in grand style with French doors lining one side of the room, opening onto a terrace for both indoor and outdoor seating. taking in a delicious, intimate catered dinner easily arranged through one of the Island's fine dining establishments. To add to the experience, live music can easily be arranged. For more information, telephone numbers can be found in the wedding directory on page 23.

P
roviding formal wear for the men in your wedding party is easy, convenient and affordable thanks to Mackinac Island Tuxedo. They can take care of all the details making it an effortless process. Simply have measurements taken for all the men at a local formal wear shop in your hometown, and send them to the Island tux store. Then simply pick them up when you arrive on the Island. It's that easy! Or, if you prefer, have your tuxedos delivered right to your hotel the night before the big day. This eliminates the hassle of renting and bringing tuxes from home. The extra rental time, cost and travel logistics make renting tuxes at home difficult with a high chance of complications. Not only getting the tuxes to the Island in good condition
Have the guy's measurements taken at a local formal wear shop in your hometown, then send them to the Island tux store is challenging, you're also responsible for taking them back home by ferry boat and your car. For the groom, groomsmen, ring bearers and even fathers and grandfathers to look their best at the wedding, formal wear should not be overlooked. If you're tall and thin, congratulations. You can wear just about any style tuxedo. If you're husky or muscular, avoid double breasted jackets and pleated shirts, which add volume. If you are short and slim, go with a 2 or 3 button jacket and

If you've enlisted a little man to march toward the altar as your ring bearer, make sure you dress him up too, of course. Everyone finds little boys in grown-up formal wear endearing. Whatever outfit you choose, make sure the boys are comfortable, while still remaining faithful to the overall tone of your wedding. A pair of colorful socks is a cute way to pull in some personality without making a spectacle. "Of course black is the classic tuxedo color of choice, but we're seeing a lot of gray, charcoal, tan and brown colored tuxedo requests," says Jack Armstrong at Mackinac Tuxedo. Vests are certainly in fashion these days, but cummerbunds are definitely out. Long ties are in but bow ties have made a big comeback. Remember, always leave the bottom coat button undone.

S
ince your wedding pictures will capture one of the most significant events of your life, it's easy to see why photography is a very important part of the day. From West Bluff vistas to beautiful wedding portraits, Mackinac creates amazing pictures because it is an amazing place. Since you've already invested a considerable amount of time and money into your dream wedding, ensure there are no regrets by selecting a local Mackinac Island photographer! Many times a family member or friend will offer to photograph your wedding. They come expecting to combine a vacation with taking your photos. You might think hiring a friend to shoot your destination wedding sounds appealing, but you're gambling with images of one of
the most important days in your life. Instead, hire a local photographer with experience photographing weddings on Mackinac Island. Local Island photographers know all the best places to take the best photos. They know the seasons, locations, the foliage, the weather and of course the local landscape. Having your photographer equipped and "Island-ready" with bicycle transportation means they're able to go to numerous locations with you for photos, instead of being limited to just one or two places. A photographer you bring from home is not familiar with the Island, is not going to be comfortable working on a bike, not familiar with the horse and carriages and regrettably may have to ride with you on your wedding carriage ride after the ceremony.
Prior to the wedding, your photographer should offer to communicate with you by email or on the phone to get to know you, discuss your wedding day schedule and offer planning tips and suggestions for the best pictures. If you are coming for an advance visit, try and set up a personal meeting to get acquainted with your photographer. Andrejka Hirsch of Andrejka Photography says, "It’s just as important to know that your photographer not only knows what you are looking for but how to create that in the unique environment that is Mackinac Island. There are many different options on Mackinac to fit every style and budget. Hiring someone who knows, loves and appreciates the Island can lead to not only beautiful photos but an incredibly unique experience." Mackinac Island Wedding Guide 25

It's important to be able to talk with your photographer about your vision for the day, and that he/she is knowledgeable about the unique opportunities for capturing Mackinac Island in the pictures. This is why of all things wedding related, a great photographer whose work you love and who is familiar with the Island, is truly one of the most important aspects of your wedding. Make sure you choose someone capable, someone local. “Riding around the Island in a beautiful wedding carriage is a memorable event best captured by a photographer with
A great photographer whose work you love and who is familiar with the Island, is truly one of the most important aspects of your wedding. Island experience," says Jeffrey Dupre of Island Photo. "Our photographers follow the bridal carriage on bicycles allowing us the mobility to capture the most unique moments of your wedding. We are able to be in the right place and stop at the best locations for perfect pictures of the bride and groom." "Really knowing the Island allows our local knowledge to direct us to the very best locations based on the lighting, what is in bloom, the wind direction, and all sorts of variables that really capture what couples have come for as the backdrop to the most photographed day of their life;

their wedding day," adds Christi Dupre of Island Photo. What type of photography style are you interested in? Documentary? Portraiture? Fine Art? A combination of all styles? Take into consideration not only today's popular photo trends, but what you want in your photos several years down the road. Mackinac Island's photographers offer a range of styles and years of experience, with packages that are sure to match your style and budget. "Someone who has a great understanding of Mackinac is key when it comes to your wedding photographer", says Mark McCoy of McCoy Made Photography. "The investment will result in something that you will look back on over and over again throughout the years to recall how you felt and how you looked, on your wedding day." Contact McCoy Made at 888901-4452
Good communication with your photographer is also essential. When making initial contacts, consider personality and experience rather than just price. Your photographer should be helpful in suggesting ideas without being overly agreeable to impossible requests. They also should be able to offer photo package and prices that fit your wedding budget.
EDITING YOUR PHOTOS Digital imaging has exploded in the world of wedding photography. The technology has come so far that good photos can be made into incredible works of art. After the wedding, the photographer's job is just beginning. Using the latest photo editing software, time is spent on the computer in the post-production phase, sorting, analyzing, color correcting, retouching, sharpening and enhancing
Photography all your photos. Adobe Bridge, Lightroom and Photoshop are the professional's editing tools. Hours are spent perfecting the pictures and typically every single image is worked on. An amateur photographer or friend rarely has the experience to do what needs to be done to your pictures during post production. Engagement photos or portraits for your wedding announcements are also very popular as the scenery on Mackinac Island is always beautiful and offers many romantic places for photographs. Numerous weddings take place every weekend from May until the end of October. The most popular dates fall in June during the beautiful lilac season, but October and of course every Saturday from Memorial Day to mid October are busy. Planning a weekday wedding is a great option as you will have a better opportunity of securing a local photographer of your choice. However, even short notice, there will always be a Mackinac Island photographer available that can provide you with fantastic photographs you will love for a lifetime.

oday, most news can be transmitted electronically by texting on your cell phone, emailing or posting on Facebook and Twitter. But when it comes to news about your wedding, tradition continues to reign. It's that distinct, personalized invitation physically mailed to your guests that happily beckons them to your special day. First impressions are lasting, starting with your save the date card, or the wedding invitations you send. "Capture the magic and beauty of your Mackinac wedding, not just in your invitation but in all of your wedding stationery," explains Grace Armour of Great Turtle Creations. Grace can create custom invitations, save the date cards, wedding ceremony programs, thank you notes, table seating cards, menus, maps and more. “Gone are the plain black and white programs,” says Ms. Armour. Today you can send almost any style of creative, custom printed keepsake that reflects your individual personality and taste. The invitation is often a likeness of the wedding and sets the tone for what kind of event is planned. A casual whimsical card implies a casual wedding whereas a formal card indicates a formal black tie event.

Many couples choose to include a bit of Mackinac as part of the wedding invitation by using artist renderings of Mackinac Island landmarks on their printed material. “Historic churches, gazebos, horse drawn carriages and even the Mackinac Bridge may be included in the invitation and will convey the message that your wedding is a special event happening at a special place.” Incorporating custom designed, hand crafted, print materials for your wedding is a truly nice touch. From custom made save the date cards, wedding invitations, ceremony programs to place setting and table cards. Don't forget the thank you cards too!

o Mackinac Island wedding is complete without taking a horse drawn carriage ride. Lovers for centuries have used the horse and buggy to parade around Mackinac’s peaceful, scenic roads. A bride arriving to her wedding ceremony in an elegant carriage makes an unforgettable grand entrance. After the ceremony, the bride and groom can continue with a romantic ride through the Island, feeling like royalty and having that romantic time to themselves. A bottle of champagne can be brought along so the couple can celebrate with some bubbly or they can just relax as new husband and wife to the cadence of two high stepping horses. There are locally owned carriage companies on the Island that offer
personalized, private wedding carriages for charter and each company has several colors and styles to choose from. The carriages are paired with a team of handsome horses and a driver dressed to accent the carriage. All carriages offer retractable tops and side window panels that can go up to protect the couple in case of bad weather. Many carriage rides begin by picking up the bride and bringing her to the wedding ceremony. If you choose to do this, the carriage will need to be rented for additional time beyond one hour. After the ceremony, the bride and groom climb onto their pretty carriage while family and friends watch, taking photos, as the couple wave goodbye and ride off. During the ride, guests have a chance to make their way to the reception or dinner,
allowing the couple time to be alone together. When the carriage ride is over, guests are usually in place and the newly married couple make their big entrance at the reception. Be sure your photographer follows your carriage on their bicycle to beautiful areas for wedding pictures. Carriages are rented by the hour which is enough time after the ceremony to ride through the Island stopping for photographs at various locations. The carriage route is usually determined by your pickup location, reserved time, weather, wind, and time of day but usually your photographer and the driver determine the best route and work together to make sure your ride is perfect. Carriages typically ride through the downtown area, passing by views of the Mackinac Mackinac Island Wedding Guide 31

Bridge, lighthouses, and shoreline, through the woods and atop both east and west bluffs. Many couples include their wedding party or parents on carriages too, so consider including a second or third touring style carriage to join you. Having the bridal party or parents join you creates a memorable experience for them and a chance for more photos of everyone on location during one of the carriage photo stops. The world’s largest horse and buggy livery is Mackinac Island Carri age Tours and an antique carriage from them is the crowning touch to your special day. Wedding Cakes
O
h, those wonderful wedding cakes! Sumptuous, delicious and ornately decorated, the cake is the center of attention at the wedding reception. Wedding cakes today range from traditional to the more contemporary styles adorned with colorful flowers, ribbons or fondant decorations. Each cake is the creation of the bridal couple and is personal and meaningful to them. Whatever the design, the cake adds a unique and personal focal point to the wedding reception. Kim Sperl, of Bella e' Dolce says, "Today's bride is more involved than ever in designing her wedding cake. Using each wedding couple's ideas, we work with them to design a cake that is as individual as they are. Fulfilling their vision, whether it is traditional, formal or whimsical, provides a personal and unique focal point for the couple's reception." People definitely want their cake to look awesome, but they are most concerned with how it tastes. It can be beautiful but if it doesn't taste good, what's the point? As you begin your search for your ultimate cake, expect to see creations you never imagined. Perhaps a luscious devil's food cake filled with chocolate mousse and glazed with shiny dark chocolate. Or if you prefer, it could be designed as a stack of square boxes wrapped in white chocolate ribbons.
Not to be overlooked is the cake topper. The traditional plastic bride and groom has been replaced by tops that are whimsical, elegant or personalized. Use porcelain figures or a nosegay of fresh flowers to match the bouquets. Consider using something Mackinac such as a horse and carriage, or a gazebo. Discuss your ideas with the baker who will work with you to create the wedding cake of your dreams.
Annie Lockwood from Annie's Cakes explains, "Bringing a cake from home is not at all practical since cakes are too delicate to withstand a long hot car trip, the ferry crossing to the Island and a taxi ride to the reception. We deliver and set up at your reception, so there are no worries!" A local Mackinac baker will work with you to create your perfect cake and, best of all, deliver and set it up at the reception.

ackinac Island was the perfect backdrop for Elisa and Greg’s wedding day. Over 200 guests gathered at Ste. Anne Catholic Church to witness the elegant wedding ceremony on a sunny summer afternoon. Shortly after their ceremony, the newlyweds took a romantic carriage ride around the Island for photos at some of Mackinac Islands' most beautiful locations. The couple then hosted their reception at Mission Point Resort’s Cypress Room with a wonderful sit-down dinner, followed by dancing through the night. Elisa and Greg reside in Kentwood, MI.

Bridal Flowers G
lorious flowers! It would be hard to imagine any wedding without them, lots of them. Every bride wants her wedding to be memorable and the choice of flowers or arrangements should reflect her specific taste and personality. Your flowers should create a theme, follow a color scheme and overall enhance the setting of your wedding day. Selecting a local florist who knows the Island will ensure that you receive the freshest flowers and superior service, delivered on time to the right location. Don't try to bring your flowers from your home-town florist. Florists in this wedding guide know the Island's logistics and can make sure that your floral arrangements are handled with the utmost care. "A good florist can get any type of flower you want at any time", says Jay Porcaro of Weber's Floral and Gifts. "However, by selecting certain flowers during their season, you can save money and get the freshest floral bouquets." Contact Jay at Weber's at 906847-6070. Think about where you want flowers to play a role in your wedding. Select your bridal bouquet and bouquets for the wedding party members, flowers for the ceremony location, carpets of fresh petals for an outside wedding, flowers at the tables and around the reception facility. Family heirlooms such as lace, photographs, costume and antique jewelry can be included into the bridal bouquets and wedding flowers, adding a special touch that can represent someone or something of importance. Remember, make your bouquet the priority. "Gone are the days where a swatch from a bridesmaid dress dictates the choice of the wedding bouquet," says Samantha Belonga of St. Ignace In Bloom. "Sending images from the internet such as Pinterest pins will help your consultant see things you 40 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide
like. Talking on the phone or emailing you during the process of creating the floral design and helping make decisions within your budget, is an important part of being a good designer." Contact the professionals at St Ignace In Bloom at 906-643-9480. Margaret's Garden, the flower shop
at the Grand Hotel, has been providing cut flowers and arrangements to Island visitors and residents for over fifty years. Their aim is to create beautiful floral pieces to enhance your gathering whether it is a wedding, a dinner, a luncheon or any special event you may be planning on

arie grew up in Michigan but went to school in Boston where she met her fiance' Shiliang. There was no question, Mackinac Island was the place to be married. Even though Shiliang and many of the guests had never been to Mackinac, it was the perfect destination. Everyone was enchanted by the Island's Victorian architecture, horses and unique physical features. A charming ceremony at Mission Church was followed by a romantic carriage ride to several beautiful locations for photos. Upon their return to Mission Point, 120 guests joined them for a fantastic dinner and reception coordinated by Mission Point Resort. The couple currently reside in Manhatten, New York City.

usic is a really big element of your wedding celebration. Music at your ceremony and reception can make the difference for having a memorable wedding for you and your guests. In a recent survey from Bride and Groom Magazine, 72% of all brides say they would have spent more time choosing their musical entertainment. When asked, 81% of guests say what they remember most about a wedding is the music and entertainment.

equipment on an island without automobiles is an important consideration when choosing a musician. There has been a trend in recent years to use prerecorded music stored on a phone and played through a bluetooth enabled speaker. These have created some unintentional incidents at ceremonies such as the songs are out
of order or the phone rings during the vows. Speak with any active wedding professional and they are certain to suggest against it. RECEPTIONS
A DJ or emcee is essential to the overall success of the wedding reception - of any size. The local DJs on Mackinac are experienced and properly equipped. "DJs these days are artists in their own rights," says Brevin Cawthorne of DJ Brevin. "Most couples have a style of music they like and some 'must have' song selections, and the rest is up to the DJ to create the mood and to lead the party without being pushy or overly showy. " A DJ's assignment is working with the bride and groom on music selection, scheduling the general flow of the evening's events, arranging special dances, assisting guests with requests, flash mob dances, special dances, etc. The DJ also coordinates timing with the hotel staff and basically is the project manager of the reception. Hiring a DJ who knows the staff and requirements of the Island hotels is essential. Ask your DJ if he will have a cordless microphone so the toasts can be given beside the bride and groom and guests can watch their reactions. One important DJ duty is to announce the arrival of the immediate families and the wedding party into the recep-

Brevin Cawthorne says, “ To make introductions go more smoothly, you should provide the disc jockey with a complete list of names with phonetic pronunciation of those people to be introduced." A DJ should also use quality microphones and equipment, as well as have a wide selection of current popular music. Like every other aspect of your wedding, it takes planning to make all of the details come together. The first step is to talk to your DJ or musicians. DJ Skip from Northern Lights Entertainment says, "I always try to talk with my clients as much as possible prior to the wedding and consult via telephone once the time line and detailed planning forms have been finalized". FIRST DANCE
The first dance is traditionally an important part of the reception as the song says something about you as a couple. Think about what makes you unique as a pair and try to find a song whose lyrics mimic those sentiments. Are you a closet-oldies junkie, or a soulful song lover and pick a Marvin Gaye song? Take dance lessons, or learn how to swing dance rather than performing a

"I had been to Mackinac Island many times before but our first trip to Mackinac together, John and I saw a beautiful wedding on the beach at Windermere Point. Little did I expect, that several years later, John and I would be planning our own fairytale wedding on Mackinac Island. Planning our destination wedding on Mackinac Island from Chicago was surprisingly very easy and an enjoyable experience thanks to the expertise of the wonderful local vendors who truly cared about making our wedding amazing. Everything about the day went absolutely perfect with the help of Mackinac Event Planning. The carriage ride through the Island to take pictures was straight out of a fairytale. We ended the night celebrating with 180° panoramic views of the lake from the Summit Room at Mission Point Resort. Even though this was the first time to the Island for many of our guests, they were so captivated by the charm and beauty of the Island, they can’t wait to plan their next visit. We felt so blessed to share a place we loved so much with our friends and family. We were so overwhelmed with happiness and a few days later we were truly speechless seeing the gorgeous wedding photos. We could not have pictured a more magical setting for the start of our Happily Ever After. " Angela Kostaken
