Creating a modular system of blocks to contain all the required programs and elements of a residential, a regular housing block is carved out into a multifaceted whole that is both simple and complex in its form. Different configurations of unit type are made as variations to achieve individual and unique living space. This connects to the neighborhood of Highland Park as a diverse and complex urban block that conveys the idea of a multi-culture and complex, urban life of Los Angeles. This housing project also seeks to give back to the city an “Artstreet� in which the neighbors could come and engage in social activities and look at art. Upper level in the building also have communal gathering space where residents and limited neighbors could use.

RESPONSE TO COMMUNITY The context of creating a housing Highland Park means there is the need to deal with a dense and diverse environment. By creating

a seemingly dense and multi-faceted housing project, the idea of a diverse and dense environment would be more inviting to the inhabitants of Highland Park. The breaking down of the masses and the carving out of unique spaces create an urban environment in fill with cracks and crevices that allow the residents to explore, get lost, and connect to other residents there and also the inhabitant of the surroundings.

The site is oriented to North-South on the longitudinal side to maximize solar daylight. The scheme of the building is a courtyard with a vertical twist that elevates the circulation slowly upward while also slowly taking in or shading out light. The facade of the building faces East toward Avenue 52nd with an Artstreet that opens up to bring daylight into the walkway.

WIND ANALYSIS

Wind is cool with average 50% relative humidity coming from the South. This can be used as advantage for natural ventilation. The Artstreet that runs North to South will bring the southern wind into the building while the long corridor and parking can take advantage of that to cool the building. Additionally, the complex form and pathways in building allow air to circulate throughout.

The urge to make an urban environment integrating the community and culture pushes back the front to create an Artstreet/community space where the neighbors could interact.

4 Unit Types are modular system that can be arranged in many possibilities and can grow organically in any direction to create endless arrangements of complex, yet efficient system.
Modular structure serves to connect spaces, hold shading devices, trellis, & colored glass in a structural yet artistic way. This enhances the urban environment and brings in culture & individuality.

Orange are public/communal spaces available in fragmented spaces throughout building. Individual patio spaces give each unit its own private area with plants.
Set along the public spaces are green rooftop garden that will create a beautiful and healthy communal living in a dense urban environment.

When two unique yet opposing ideas, programs, materials, or forms intersect and collide, an explosion of new ideologies and forms can evolve as a consequence. This project is about the intersection of the wine-making process and the hospitality services, the tectonics of the concrete and the metal, the earthy masonry and the airy carpentry, the nature and the manmade. What result from these opposing poles are the subjects of investigation. Starting from the required programs as two simple bars, the orientation of the both the production and hospitality units are shifted toward the East-West cardinal directions to maximize daylighting and sustainability while the hospitality unit is shifted an additional 30° to face the vineyard for the views in alignment with the vines. The hospitality unit hosting Bed and Breakfast is elevated upon the receding landscape of the vineyard to mark an experiential quality of a vacation space while also shading the central courtyard and wedding banquet space below. Underneath the B&B is the restaurant that cooks for the vacationers and event attendees. The production and wine tasting unit adjacent is made of concrete and descends deeper into the existing ground to make use of the ground temperature and thick thermal mass as a passive cooling strategy. The Wine Tasting program stands foremost to the street to welcome visitors and introduce them to the experience of the winery and wine tasting. At the very tail end are the Packaging/Shipping and Wine Production area with truck access for delivery. The intersection between the two buildings are the breakage and openings where one can stand below yet see the Private Wine Tasting space above, while one above could peek down into the Wine Cellar and all its barrels along with a VIP Dinning/Wine Tasting space. From this intersection, many other moments are created as a response to this collision of forms, materials, and programs. There are moments where one can walk down a step ramp outdoor beneath the B&B bridge, peeking from the side inward the Wine Cellar or the Kitchen, walking down the stairs and looking outside, standing in the Private Wine Tasting and stepping out on the roof to look toward the landscape, and standing in the dark wine cellar underneath the gleaming, perforated corten steel looking up the double-height space. The courtyard is a result of the space created by the two buildingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rotation. An outdoor Event/banquet space is here with a fall back shaded space underneath the B&B. A large amphitheater is at the end with a concrete wall backdrop controlling the strong prevailing wind and yet open up to the scenic landscape behind the performance platform. Hidden behind the same wall is a long pool for an additional B&B experience.

A day was spent visiting as a group talking with the winemaker Fernando Chavira and Steven Galt about what their aspirations and hopes for the future of their vineyard. We learned much about the wine-making process, the equipments, and the conditions required to establish a winery. It was one of the best architecture making experience weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had in our education since the experience of going to a winery in the Californian desert landscape is quite a unique one. It was a very raw and different lifestyle in these areas; very different from the city lifestyle of Los Angeles. The landscape was peaceful and inspired much thoughts in us. The clients were also nice enough to buy us specialty pizza for dinner, where we ate and drank wine while having the most fun social experience. Section cut through the intersecting spaces where the two building systems collide to show the tectonics connection between masonry and carpentry and how spaces are created in individual system and at the conjunction of these systems. The spaces each are primary program in their own system, but as they intersect with another system they start to form secondary functions. This allow the occupants of the building to interact indirectly through transparencies, where they could be in the Wine Tasting area and be able to peak into the Wine Production space or the private Bed & Breakfast Wine Tasting space and vice versa.

The goal of this building will seek to inspire action, foster dialogue, and set an example of problem-solving and social responsibility worthy of TED’s mission statement. 2018 ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
Having a goal formed of a greater purpose from TED, this building incorporates Sustainable technologies and an “Architectural Parlant” form that will speaks its purpose as a high tech building that is about Technology, Entertainment, Ideas, and Design Culture of Culver City. It is designed to break traditional conventions but will also reflect on the history of architecture and of Culver City, referencing on the postmodernism of Eric Owen Moss. This building will be a ‘formal hinge’ and spatial filter between the external forces governing Culver City, and the daily life of the staff, patrons, and speakers of TED Conferences.

Hemispheres on roof function to capture storm-water. Gravity-fed delivery system will transfer water to the Underground Cistern.
CROSS VENTILATION
THE SPHERE AS ENERGY EFFICIENT FORM
Cross ventilation takes advantages of Prevailing Wind from the west and slows down wind through small openings and normalizing wind through larger openings on the opposite side.
Did you know that the sphere, in the same area, has less volume per cubic than the square. As a result, using the sphere as a sustainable design form is more energy efficient to warm up or cool down the space.
STACKED VENTILATION Using passive cooling strategy that takes advantage of temperature stratification. As warm air rises, ambient, cooler air replaces it and creates an upward lift in the air current. This happens in between the negative spaces created by spheres and voids resulting from the negative spaces of spheres. These cavities starts from the ground and rises all the way to the rooftop.
OPERABLE BRAILLE SKIN
Takes up less volume
Skin design created from the Braille system of circular characters to stop direct Solar Gain from the South and keep building cool during the summer months. The openings are also operable to open up during the winter months to allow more light in for better heating of building.

The Braille were actually created from the TED Talk Mission Statement. This continues with the theme of ARCHITECTURE PARLANTE.
UNDERGROUND WATER CISTERN Rainwater and storm-water harvesting through underground water cistern storage. Catchment of water is directed from the roof bowl created by hemisphere to the underground cistern. Permeable ground surfaces also capture rainwater and store it in the cistern. 48

This studio establishes students on the fundamental process and knowledge of architectural design. By following a series of abstract processes with parameters that conditioned the students to think of the Envelope, Structures, Topography, Datum, Form, and Spaces, the outcome will naturally results to habitable spaces that are relevant to the discussion of architecture without ever starting with the idea of habitable space or program. After the architectural aspect have been established, Program and Site is re-injected into the work as a final parameters that will consequently affect everything else, but also adapt to the existing architecture.
