Singapore University of Technology & Design

Hello, My name is Jeanette Lee. I am a second year undergraduate architecture student at the Singapore University of Design and Technology. I am particularly invested in developing skills in up and coming technologies such as virtual reality and computational design methods to prepare for the future of architectural exploration. Beyond the everyday studio grind, I am a hustler and engage regularly in entrepreneurial activities and freelance design to improve the flexibility of my software and interpersonal skills.

Studio 1 Project . Individual Mentor: Clarence Chia Nov 2018 - Dec 2018 We were tasked to design a separate academic building situated in town, close to Dhoby Ghaut Green. For this project, I considered the use of human traffic and focused on an exhibition space where student’s projects can be viewed by the public.

Nearby buildings include SOTA (School of the Arts), The Cathay, SMU (Singapore Management University), Dhoby Ghaut MRT, YMCA Building and Orchard Road Presbyterian Church.

The Satellite’s main entrance was optimally oriented to face the busiest intersection between Bras Basah Rd and Prinsep St while its glass-panelled gallery space faces the stretch along Bras Basah Rd, opposite the plaza in front of The Cathay.

Through varied levels of visual permeability as well as orientation of programs in the building, the Satellite guides the attention of public users as well as private users (students and staff) into the central gallery space.

Considering the habits of students’ in terms of prototyping and model-making, learning spaces are divided into open learning spaces and regular classrooms. Major educational facilities like the library and the fabrication lab are also arranged carefully in order to create accessibility yet maintain minimal noise for the library and minimal air pollution within the building from fabrication processes in order to ensure a comfortable learning and working environment.

02 Skinny

Studio 1 Project . Group Work Mentor: Michael Budig, Jason Lim, Carlos Banon Nov 2018 The Skinny project is an exploration of new design to a typical shophouse (cafe) in Vietnam - strictly narrow and tall. Set in the hot and busy streets of Vietnam where motorbikes kick off perpetual clouds of dust into the air, Skinny faces the challenge of creating a breathable space, both in terms of ventilation as well as quality of air. The project requirements focus on the facade development.

The front and back facade of the Skinny undulates and recedes inward on the lower levels and fans outward at the top. This feature creates shading for the front and back outdoor porch/seating areas while allowing interior spaces to be protected from the dusty roads just outside the perimeter of the building.

Gaps between louvers as well as the central courtyard allow for natural ventilation to cool the interiors of the building.

Varying density of louvers simultaneously reveals and conceals both views out and views in. Views in at street level is sufficiently concealed as people pass by to create a greater degree of privacy within interior spaces.

03 Mammoth

Architecture Science & Technology Project . Group Work Mentor: Michael Budig Nov 2018 We were tasked to design a small private research facility situated in Khatanga, Russia. The project focuses on the construction material and details of the building. Good Climatic Design term module award

Mammoth rests on a site in Khatanga, Russia, where strong winds and extremely cold temperatures prevail. The building design aims to be simple and functional, all the while focusing on tackling climatic conditions of the location. Mammoth’s two structural walls are oriented towards the North-East and South-West to mitigate the effects of strong winds coming from these directions. The roof is slanted at an optimal angle to facilitate natural snow removal and reduce unnecessary load on the roof structure. The building’s only two openings are tilted and oriented to capture the most sunlight and heat during the short hours of daylight in Khatanga in order to warm up the

Using Grasshopper, the optimal combination of materials were chosen for the wall, roof and flooring. Conditions such as the overall U-value as well as cost were taken into consideration.
