Staying safe this Halloween http://www.seventeen.com/life/a2132/halloween-safety-tips/

Halloween is massive in the States, and had been gradually creeping more and more into UK celebrations as the years go by. No longer is is about trick or treating as a 4 year old - it’s now all about full on partying. Read these top tips on how to stay safe this Halloween. 1.

Always watch your drink at a party! Make sure you pour your own drinks, and never leave your drink unattended. If you suspect that the punch may have been spiked - don’t drink it. It’s not worth it, and you will end up throwing up all night in the toilet, and miss the whole party. Not to mention the photos your ‘friends’ will take of you with your head down the toilet appearing on Snapchat and Instagram...

2.

Make sure your costume is functional. You should be able to move easily in your outfit, and it shouldn't make it harder for you to get out of a crowd if a party is getting out of hand. No extra-long or too-tight dresses, and be aware of you are wearing all black that on the roads, you won’t be seen. If you have bought a fancy dress outfit to wear, make sure it is flameretardant. Claudia Winkleman has been in the press recently campaigning for these strict guidelines to come in after her daughter was seriously burnt last year whilst out trick or treating.

3.

If a friend is driving, make sure they are sober and alert. Don't let them drink and drive, and be conscious not to distract her from keeping her attention on the road. If you do think they may have succumbed to the punch, call your parents for a lift home. They would rather you get home safely than risk it with a drunk driver.

4.

If you do go out trick-or-treating, be smart: don't eat any opened or unwrapped food or sweets, and always wait outside. Be aware of any ‘sweets’ you don’t recognise as these could be drugs. Also respect the people who’s houses you are knocking on - a bunch of scary looking teenagers could be terrifying to the elderly or very young children, and you could come across as looking intimidating.

5.

If you are hosting a party, be safe with decorations. Don't use real candles (in or outside of pumpkins) if a room will be crowded – these can easily be knocked over. Even if you want that eerie Halloween vibe, make sure there is some lighting in every room so people can move easily.

6.

Have your mobile to hand and make sure there is enough battery. Either take a charger with you so you can charge it up if the battery is running low, or lay off the selfies. You may just need to call your parents if you miss your ride home.

How to do your own Halloween make-up by Hannah from the Glitterbox Face Painting http://www.theglitterbox.co.uk/

Millie was after a cool, understated Halloween look that made more of a fashion statement than a shock-horror show. Sugar skulls, zombies and vampires often have a mask effect on the face here we're letting the face work in combination with the makeup to create a spooky-glam effect. Follow this simple step-by-step way to do a Halloween look yourself. Makeup can be used, but if you prefer face paint I'd recommend using the Superstar brand - (http:// www.thefacepaintingshop.com/Face-And-BodyPaint/Superstar-Face-And-Body-Paint-the-facepainting-shop).

First apply a thick layer of pale base. You can use a light shade of foundation, or a skintone face paint. Then sponge grey face paint or eye shadow under the eyes and over the lips. Then build it up on the eyelids.

Blend some purple eyeshadow or paint into the crease of the eyelid and drag it down over the cheekbone for definition. Sweep down each side of the nose for a contoured effect. Drag a little more purple underneath the cheekbones and dab purple or grey where you'd like to add cracks.

Give your lips a bold colour - we've used purple but green works too, or even black. It's easy to buy lipsticks in these shades on the high street, if you're not using paint.

Green has been used as a guideline for the cracks. Unless you have a green eye pencil or liner pen just go for black in its own. A combination of colours gives a little added texture, but isn't vital. Have a practice on your arm first! Also add a thick eye line for drama. As a final touch dab some loose, holographic glitter on the cracking lines, as well as the corners of the eyes and the lips.

We hope these tricks work a treat!

Fierce Feelings Body image

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/ 5Srg3zwxc8cbsCK2JKjn1pV/body-image

This is how we see ourselves We all care about how we look to some extent. And most of us have bits we'd like to change. No one checks the mirror and thinks: 'Yes. I am perfection'. But girls as young as five are now routinely worrying about their weight, size and shape. Many of us have a negative body image. We judge people (ourselves included) on looks. We think about our looks most of the time, and use energy thinking about how we can make ourselves better, so much so that half of girls and a third of boys aged 14 admit to dieting to try to change their body shape.

So why does it happen? A negative body image is not always about vanity. It can often be about insecurity and low selfesteem. 'Slebs are everywhere. Just when you think it's safe to open the paper - whoops, there's another one. Beaming, glowing: all sinew and teeth. Studies show that we are significantly more dissatisfied with our own appearance after being shown TV ads featuring exceptionally slim and beautiful people. The same applies to reading fashion magazines. Experiments show that magazine photographs of super-thin models can promote feeling of depression, stress, guilt, shame, insecurity and bodydissatisfaction.

What - and we buy this stuff ? Why do we do it to ourselves? Can't we see the airbrushing? The fake tan/nails/teeth/hair/boobs? The full time personal trainer and stylist? It's like measuring up to plastic dolls. The super-slim celeb look is only achievable for about 1% of us. Remember, the average UK female is a size 14/16 so quit squidging your soft bits in disgust or feeling hopeless because we just can't get a six pack. We are brilliant because of who we are. Not how closely we resemble Rihanna or Ryan Gosling!

Teen charities Seriously Awkward from the Children’s Society https://www.childrenssociety.org.uk/what-you-can-do/campaign-forchange/seriously-awkward-protect-16-17-year-olds-olderteenagers Being 16 or 17 can be an awkward age and an anxious period of time for any older teenager. Important decisions need to be made about your future career, first romantic relationships are formed, new social networks are developed and there is a need and desire to explore adult world. Accompanying this is often a pressure to engage in activities that may lead to risks, such as substance misuse or engaging in sexual activities. It is also a very important time in young person’s emotional development. While there has always been a better awareness of the importance of brain development in the early years, the importance of adolescent years has been less talked about. Yet research identified that adolescence is a peak age for the onset of serious mental illness and suggests that mental health needs intensify from age 14 onwards. Read the timeline of Eva’s story below...

At The Children’s Society, we see behind the armour teenagers so often put on to shield themselves. The armour that makes them seem troublesome when they are troubled; that makes them seem difficult when what they most need is someone who cares. Our recommendations aim to ensure that 16–17 year olds are protected from abuse, harm and neglect, and given the support they need to thrive. That’s why The Children’s Society is campaigning to improve protections in the law, increase access to services and ensure all 16–17 year olds have their voices heard and their needs met. Sign our petition. Call on the Government to change the law to ensure 16 and 17 year olds are fully protected when they are at risk of harm, abuse or neglect. We urge the Government to introduce better legal protection for 16 and 17 year olds. The Government should conduct a full review of relevant legislation and ensure that vulnerable 16 and 17 year olds are fully protected from risk of harm and exploitation. https://act.childrenssociety.org.uk/ea-action/action? ea.client.id=1936&ea.campaign.id=40912&ea.tracking.id=blog

Fierce Fun How to carve the best pumpkins around From http://www.zombiepumpkins.com

Have a look at these amazing pumpkin creations - and the best bit is that you can even download a stencel from the link above to make it easier!!!

1.

Tools for the job.

Find a pumpkin that is big enough to fit the pumpkin pattern you want to carve. One with a nice smooth side will make your work easier. You'll also need a carving kit. At the very least the kit should come with small sawtooth blades.

2.

Pumpkin gutting

Create a lid in the top of the pumpkin with a knife or sturdy carving tool, cutting at an inward angle so your lid won't fall inside. Remove most of the seeds and strings with your hands. Then use a scoop tool or big spoon to scrape the inner walls of the pumpkin to about 1" thick where the design will be. To get carving quicker, try the Pumpkin Gutter on an electric drill - but please be carefull, or in the words of Blue Peter, get an adult to help you!!!

3.

Pattern transferring

After printing your pattern (from the website above), trim off the excess paper around the design, and tape the pattern securely to the pumpkin. You can cut slits or pleat the paper to help it wrap around the surface. Then using a poker tool or push pin, poke holes (just enough to pierce the paper and pumpkin skin) along the lines of the pattern.

4.

Pumpkin carving

Holding your carving saw tool like a pencil, push it straight into the pumpkin on one of the lines you transferred. Begin sawing (up and down motion) following the lines. To keep the surface stable as you carve, try to cut out the small pieces first, and work your way from the middle outward. When done carving, poke the pieces out gently. Some may have to be pushed out from the inside. Look at your original paper pattern for reference. You'll be removing the areas that are shaded grey. 5.

Pumpkin preserving

A quick rinse in the sink will give your finished pumpkin a hydration head start. To keep the design from shriveling, you can coat the cut edges with petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) to seal in the pumpkin's moisture. When not on display, store your pumpkin in a cool place. You can also cover the pumpkin with plastic wrap, to keep it from drying out. If your design does start to shrivel, a soak in water for a few hours can bring it back to life.

6.

Pumpkin lighting

Light a small candle and place it inside your pumpkin. Using a glass candle holder will make it safer and prevent the flame from blowing out. A long utility lighter with a trigger can help light the candle at the bottom of the pumpkin. With a small or enclosed pumpkin, a safe step would be to cut a hole in the lid to act as a vent. To keep things extra safe, consider battery powered lights, which come in a variety of colors.

7.

Pumpkin photography

Find a dark location. Try using some subtle indirect light to show a hint of the pumpkin surface, while letting the inner glow shine brightest. Camera flash will over-light the surface of the pumpkin, so turn off the flash. Steady your camera on something stable, a tripod if you have one. If your camera allows, try different exposure times and aperture settings, to get the desired effect.

Fierce Fun Film review - Macbeth http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138584 “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Three weird women prophesy victorious warrior Macbeth (Fassbender) will be king of Scotland, sowing the seeds of treachery, murder and madness in the ambitious noble and his lady (Cotillard). Empire Online says... Braveheart meets the Bard for a blood-soaked game of thrones in Justin Kurzel’s lean, mean and absolutely sensational adaptation of the terrifying tale of Macbeth. It’s the only Shakespearean play that is entirely about evil, its protagonist the only of his who is damned beyond any redemption. We’ve seen a lot of Macbeths (Welles, Kurosawa, Polanksi, for starters). Really a lot. But you have never shed tears for Macbeth or his ferocious co-conspirator, the decidedly unhinged Lady Macbeth. Not until now. It’s shot exquisitely (by DP Adam Arkapaw) as a medieval piece in Scotland — mists in the gloaming, austere castles, red skies and smoky battlefields. It’s also rigorously controlled, from soliloquy and intimacies to big battle action and boldly brutal set-pieces (a vindictive Macbeth personally murders Lady Macduff and the little Macduffs in a shocking, gut-twisting deviation from the text). Twists from the original text yield ingenious invention, like the stunning surprise of Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane, proving that an unconventional take on a classic can still bring it to new, breathtakingly cinematic life. Verdict Inspired, innovative, stunning, with unforgettable performances and images, this is up there with the great screen Shakespeares. The playwright surely would be thrilled with it in its full-blooded vigour.

Bat-black cubes: Colour water black with food dye and pour it into icecube trays to make hauntingly black cubes. Frozen eyeballs: Peel and scoop out a radish and stuff it with half a Spanish olive – try and find ones with a red pimento chilli in the centre. Place into the hole of an ice cube tray then top up with water and freeze. Once frozen, pop them out of the tray and find peering eyeballs encased in a frozen tomb. Vampire fangs: Drop pomegranate seeds into your ice cube trays, fill with water, freeze et voilà – vampire fang ice cubes.
