Fierce and Fresh A few words from Jet...

Fierce and Fresh is real. It’s about real life. Real issues. Real questions. Fierce and Fresh doesn’t sugarcoat life. It says it how it is. #FierceandFresh

So, you may have realised that this edition is a bit late. The truth is, we were ready to go live last week, and then the terrorist attacks in Paris and around the world happened, and we felt we should delay it for a bit. Terrorism is a scary thing, but we can’t let it affect us. That’s what the terrorists want - for us to be scared. Yes, we have to be vigilant, but we can’t let it stop us going about our day to day lives. We must also realise that these people aren’t doing this in the

name of religion - any religion but especially Islam. Take time out - appreciate what we have, and live for the moment. Life is precious. Glen from HappiJar has given us some tips on creating our own jar of happiness, as well as showing us how his HappiJar app works too. Go on - give it a go. And talking of apps, don’t forget we have our very own Fierce and Fresh app which has streaming from our FB page,

link to all the published mags, as well as music from DJ Coxy. Find us in the App Store. Get involved. Get in touch.

Fierce Future How to do on-line PR well By Meredith, Hepner PR In 2007 I was sent an email from a friend requesting I join some new networking site "Facebook". I ignored the email, writing it off as spam. I was already on the now defunct "Friends Reunited" and dabbled in "MySpace" and quite honestly, what could be better than that? 8 years later Facebook is one of the three social media power houses along with Twitter, and the not so new kid in town "Instagram". Brett Easton Ellis's book 6 degrees of separation always fascinated me. We'd find the fewest amount of degrees to see how we were connected to Brad Pitt and whilst this, at the time, seemed a ridiculous and slightly weird game, Facebook showed us how connected we all actually are. On the 28 August 2015 1 billion people logged into Facebook, the company Mark Zuckerberg founded in 2004 Photo by Tom Parsons Photography The "milestone" was reached when "1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family". Facebook now has nearly 1.5 billion users who log in at least once a month. It wasn't long before I saw how networking was making the world a much smaller place and before long it was clear people were making money. Shop pages were being set up, business pages created and before long regional networking groups appeared within this phenomenal social media machine. Throw in the sweet sharp short savvy Twitter and my ridiculously guilty pleasure Instagram, and you never need to leave your home. Obviously the prospect of never socialising with people "in real life" was not on option for me, but I began to see how it could work for me. In 2010 I started realising what felt like recreational time could actually become a career. I started pitching to local businesses. I would manage their social media accounts - anything from complete set up, overhaul to maintenance. To begin with it was a hard task. What's the point? Nobody takes Facebook seriously? We like to advertise in the press. How can you possibly do a sales spiel in 140 characters? Who wants to see photos of a hairdressers? It wasn't easy. Some were totally sold by social media and jumped at the chance. Others not so full of faith. So I proved it. I'd post about something I'd bought, a new haircut, a meal out - and people started seeing the results. We call this the #fomo era. Fear of missing out. A modern day keeping up with the Jones's. It's fun, it's friendly, it's all around the world. And it sells.

A few years on and I'm blessed to have the most amazing clients. They've become like family. And we've now created our own ever growing networking group. From it the opportunities have been unbelievable. I was able to work out in New York in the Summer as my iPad is my office, my hours fit around my already hectic life and it still doesn't feel like work, which, when you analyse the results, is very much hard work paying off. I get to work with fantastic inspiring people and every day is different. I now do an occasional stint on BBC radio and get to go to exciting parties, even helping put events together. And the job satisfaction is not only seeing your business thriving but your clients too. I've heard more times than I can ever count "it's not a real job", "you're just sitting on Facebook" - in fact I'd go as far to say some people have been derogatory. But it's far from "sitting on Facebook" it's being on photo shoots, attending fashion shows, organising launches, running events, hosting open days, meeting and greeting people, giving talks and blogging- and what just started as managing other people's accounts has now given me my own PR business running from, you guessed it, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.... But as we are aware, social media has its dark side. It can have misuse, bullying and propaganda sadly like in some workplaces. Some people still don't understand the power of social media. They write things as though it's a text to a friend, they use inappropriate language and, in a recent case of a Beautician posting after the recent Paris atrocities, can result in prosecution. People’s personas can change behind a keyboard and whilst that can be a positive, fresh coffee drinking, cake making, vintage dress wearing goddess it can also create monsters. What you say on social media is a very serious matter. Public comments about mediocre service in a restaurant for example, can destroy a business, so think before you post. But back to the positives. Look at how social media on Friday 13th 2015 came together for Paris. Hashtags #noussommesparis and #jesuischarlie meant we became a virtual chorus of solidarity. Today we are more aware of what's going on around the world. News is practically rolling and you can always find something to read or to engage in. So don't sniff at social media. It's the most powerful media platform in the world and social media management has become a viable career choice with respectable salaries . And to think, in 2007 I thought an invitation to join Facebook was just spam. How to protect your lips in the winter http://health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/03/6-tips-to-protect-your-lips-from-thecold/ Winter can be a brutal time of the year for your lips. The cold air, the chilling wind and dry, heated air inside all conspire to make your lips dry and tight. In addition, when we go out in the cold, the mouth is usually among the last things we cover up, says dermatologist Melissa Piliang, MD. Lips are a special type of skin that is thin and delicate – and so requires a little extra TLC, Dr. Piliang says. “Our lips dry out ten times faster than the rest of the skin on your face so it’s really important to use extra protection,” Dr. Piliang says. Here are six tips to keep your lips smooth and lovely all winter long: 1.

Don’t lick your lips. When your lips are dry, it’s natural to want to lick them to make them moist. But licking your lips actually has the opposite effect. “Once you put saliva on the lips, it dries out and makes our lips even more dry,” Dr. Piliang says. “Plus the enzymes that are in saliva that are meant to digest food are irritating to the lips.”

2.

Use a lip balm that is ointment-based. This will lock in the moisture and help to heal cracks and splits in the skin. Look for a healing ointment that contains petrolatum, essential oils or glycerin. Another important ingredient is sunscreen — there still is sun in the winter.

3.

Avoid lip balms containing camphor, eucalyptus and menthol. These substances actually dry out your lips and make the problem worse. In response, you apply more of this kind of lip balm, and the cycle continues.

4.

Avoid brushing or rubbing your lips when they are flaky or peeling. “It’s better not to scrub your lips or pick the peeling skin off with your teeth or your fingers. That just creates cracks and sores on your lips and can make things worse,” Dr. Piliang says. “Instead, apply a very heavy ointment-based balm that will be soothing and help to heal your lips.”

5.

Treat cracks right away. If you let them go, they can become worse and possibly get infected or lead to a cold sore.

6.

At night, apply lip balm before you go to bed. Many people sleep with their mouths open. Eight hours of breathing in and out through your mouth can dry your lips, Dr. Piliang says. Also consider using a humidifier at night if the air in your house is dry because of being heated.

Fierce and Fabulous Teen Skin Health www.park-beauty.co.uk

Joanne from Park Beauty gives us some top tips on keeping your skin healthy.

Are you experiencing problems with your skin ? Acne, spots or eczema ? If so try to keep your skincare routine simple. Do NOT use harsh toners or peels which just strip your skin of oil, so the skin then produces more and more oil ! Don't use products with parabens or artificial perfume or SLS, which all contribute to skin problems. The skin needs to be cleaned every morning and a gentle oil cleanser amazingly helps to regulate the skins oil production. Then a gentle Rose toner without alcohol to balance the ph of the skin and a light moisturiser to protect from the elements, sun, wind, cold and pollution, which are all damaging to the skin. You can also use a clay mask once a week to help the healing process and draw out impurities. If your funds allow (or Mum/Dad will pay) then go for a professional Deep Cleanse Facial. This will help to get you on the right track with a skincare routine. Of course the old saying we are what we eat also contributes to how our skin looks, so cut down on junk food, chips, crisps and sugar. Drink water ! It really does make your skin clear and sparkle.

Fierce Feelings Terrorism - how to cope with what is going on around the world http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/thought/terrorist_attacks.html

The events of this weekend in Paris and around the world in recent months has shocked everyone. Kid’s Health have a written an article on how to cope with our feelings and thoughts when terrorism effects our lives. ‘When a terrorist strikes, it seems like the entire world is upside down and confusing. Terrorism is something very violent that is meant to hurt and scare many people. Acts of terrorism have occurred for many years in many places. For the United States, the worst attacks happened on September 11, 2001. Terrorism scares everyone because no one knows when or where it will take place. Right after a terrorist attack, everyone has questions they want answered and feelings they need to express. Lots of people suffer because of these attacks, many more than those who were injured or killed. So how can a person cope after something awful has happened? Here are some things you can do: •

Give yourself a fear reality check. Thinking about terrorist attacks can make you worried about your safety and your family's safety. The images you see on TV make terrorist attacks seem so close by, even if you live far away from where they happened. Remember that the chances that a terrorist will hurt you are very, very small.

Talk it out and share your feelings with others. You may be feeling different emotions at different times. Sadness. Anger. Fear. Confusion. Even numbness — not feeling anything at all. These feelings are normal reactions to a tragedy. Don't be afraid to express how you feel and listen to others as they share their feelings with you. Your parents, friends, teachers, and others can help you and help them.

Take care of yourself. Losing sleep, not eating, and worrying too much can make you sick. As much as possible, try to get enough sleep, eat right, exercise, and keep a normal routine. It may be hard to do, but it can keep you healthy and better able to handle a tough time.

Take a TV break. Although it's natural to want to know what's happening, don't spend hours glued to the television set. Taking a break from watching what's going on in the world is OK. Read, play board games, or go outside.

Get creative and express yourself. Drawing pictures and writing letters can help you feel better. Maybe you'd like to send a letter or homemade card to rescue workers, doctors, and others who cared for people who were hurt. You also can start a journal and record your thoughts and feelings. You can share this with others or keep it to yourself.

Be respectful of others. You may have heard certain countries, religions, or political causes blamed for terrorism. But it's important to remember that very few people believe in killing and hurting innocent people to make their point. Don't give in to prejudice by blaming a whole group or by disliking people just because of the country where they were born, the faith they practice, the way they dress, or the color of their skin.

Help out and be with others. In times of tragedy, people find comfort in being together and supporting each other. Find ways to show you care and that the community is sticking together. Hold a friend's hand or give someone a hug. It will make you both feel a little better.

Fierce Feelings Glen from HappiJar shows you how to make your own Jar of Happiness http://www.happijar.com

How to make your Jar of Happiness for 2016 If like us you are seriously looking forward to a New Year full of exciting new challenges and awesome times with your BFF’s and family, then you will LOVE this project we have got for you. The idea is to collect all your happy thoughts, memories and trinkets in one gorgeous glass jar during the whole year. Then when you need a pick me up, you simply open up your jar, pick out a random one and enjoy a little instant happiness buzz! You can thank us later, but first let’s get your jar looking at it’s best for your bedroom. So here we go!

1. Choose a Jar to fill The first step is an easy one. Go grab an empty jar complete with it’s own lid, making sure that it is CLEAN and DRY.

2. Decorate your Jar! This is the really fun bit :) It’s nice to give your design some thought, but remember you can easily embellish upon and refresh your jar decorations over the year to come. Try using some glue and glitter if you have them. Also if you have some spare stickers add those, and finally use a coloured permanent or gel pen, to write a label. We love using ‘My Happiness Jar’. But hey, call it what ever makes you happy ;)

3. Fill the Jar. Filling the jar is easy peasy. All you need to do is to find some squares of multicoloured paper and a pen to write with. Note: if you’d rather roll up your notes than fold them - you will also need some short lengths of lace, twine or ribbon to tie them up with. When you write your happy thought make sure you record the date on it and try to keep the message short, perhaps around 20 words. We find that mentioning how you are feeling is really useful too. Then fold up the paper or roll it up and tie it off and drop it in your jar!

4. How often do I post a message into my Jar? There are no hard and fast rules for a Jar of Happiness, but our advice is that for the first 2 - 3 weeks, try to drop a message in each day. It will go a long way to forming that all important habit. This habit will then go on to help make sure that when you open your Jar in the future that you will have enough messages in there to enjoy once again ;) 5. When should I read my messages back? Again, this is entirely up to how you feel. Some of us choose to wait right up until the end of the year, empty the entire contents and read them all at once! But we love to open our Jar whenever we feel the need for a little reminder of how great our life is and how important our friends and family are. Additional cool ideas. Here is a short list of some optional extras which could also get your creative juices flowing: i) Each week, try printing off a grid of 6 - 9 of your favourite photos and write your happy thoughts on the back of them. Cut them up and drop them in your jar for an extra special full colour reminder of your memories. ii) You can also post small objects or trinkets into the jar to fill it up quicker, make it look more beautiful or act as instant reminders of great times past. Try tickets, sweet wrappers or even little bits of jewellery. iii) Create a Group Happiness Jar between you and your mates, or family. Keep it somewhere central and if you all aim to post a new happy memory each week the jar will fill up in no time at all! iv) Is your jar filling up too fast? It’s OK, just decorate a new one and start a jar collection! v) If you also fancy collecting memories whilst you are on the run using your smart phone, then try downloading our app called HappiJar. It’s in the App store right now and you can save text, photos, sounds and music all on beautifully designed sewing buttons which then drop into you own digital jar FOREVER! AND... you can connect your jar up to your friends and help them all fill their jars too!! Find us at www.happijar.com. vi) Finally, anyone in search of inspiration for decorating their jar should search Happy Jar on Instagram and Pinterest Have a fantastic festive break and remember, if you get your jars started before Christmas begins, then you can read all about it your happiest christmassy moments next year too! http://www.happijar.com

Teen help - Hollyoaks’ grooming storyline NSPCC https://www.nspcc.org.uk/fighting-for-childhood/news-opinion/working-with-hollyoaks-to-protectchildren-from-abuse/

‘If you watch Hollyoaks, you might have seen their recent 'No More Secrets' story line - a sexual abuse story centred around the McQueen family. The NSPCC have been working with Hollyoaks since the start of the year as script consultants on the story line as well as helping the actors to prepare and understand the emotions their characters are experiencing. With mainstream shows tackling difficult topics, it is hoped that anyone else going through similar issues is given the confidence and reassurance to speak out and get help. As well as the grooming storyline between Pete and Cleo, they are also working to promote the PANTS rule. Although this is primarily aimed at younger children (up to age 11), it still has the same principles for all ages. The Underwear Rule campaign was launched in 2013 and is about teaching teaching children the importance of body ownership to keep them safe. The Protect and Respect service is also using the Hollyoaks storyline to help explain grooming to young people with learning difficulties.

Remember, the PANTS rule applies whatever age you are.

Fierce Fun Top 10 driving tips for winter By http://www.which.co.uk/news/2012/11/top-10-tips-for-driving-in-winter-conditions-303791/

Winter is well and truly on it’s way, and even though the temperatures have been unusually mild for this time of the year, things are about to change and become more ‘typical’ for November and December. So what can you do to make sure getting from A to B is as safely as possible? Before setting off in adverse conditions, it’s worth asking yourself if the journey is really essential. If it can be avoided that's normally the best course of action. But if you have to drive on flooded roads or in snow or ice, check our top 10 tips before you set off. 1. Check your tyres before setting off Getting maximum grip out of your tyres is crucial for driving in adverse conditions. Be sure to check that your tyres are in good condition, have adequate tread depth – we recommend at least 3mm – and that there is no sidewall damage. 2. Check the water depth Cars with a higher ground clearance are generally more suited to driving through flood water. However, it’s always worth checking the depth of flood water before attempting to drive through it. If possible, park up and watch other vehicles go through it to see how deep it is. As a rule of thumb, you don’t want to enter standing water that’s deeper than six inches. 3. Take it slow through water There is often a temptation to drive through flood water as quickly as possible. This is not advised and could cause internal damage. Instead, keep it slow and maintain the revs, if necessary by slipping the clutch – this will help keep the exhaust clear of water. 4. Test your brakes on exit When it’s safe to do so, test your brakes. It’s highly likely they will need drying out, in which case use them gently at a slow speed.

5. Keep your distance Stopping distances dramatically increase in bad weather conditions, especially on snow and ice, so leave a much bigger gap between your car and the vehicle in front. At a minimum double the twosecond rule so there is at least a four-second gap. 6. Avoid hard acceleration and braking Accelerating and braking hard on wet, snowy or icy roads may lead to a loss of grip. Apply gentle pressure on the pedals, and if the car starts to slide, steer into the skid and keep your feet off the brake and throttle until the vehicle is back under control. 7. Stay in a higher gear on snow and ice Driving in a higher gear will give you more control over your car in adverse weather. When pulling away on a slippery road it is often preferable to use second or even third gear, as first may not provide enough traction. 8. Stick to busy roads Due to the higher volume of traffic on motorways and A-roads they generally offer a clearer route than back roads. They are more likely to have been gritted - many country lanes and minor roads will remain untreated throughout the winter. 9. Plan your route By planning your route before setting off, you can take into account what roads you'll be driving on and which you should avoid. If you should get stuck on-route, it also means you'll have a good idea of where you are if need to call for assistance. 10. Find a bigger space Give yourself more room than usual when parking in snow or ice. Grip is likely to be decreased and if you were to lose traction when pulling away this should help avoid your car sliding into any objects or vehicles close by.

Burnt (12A) - Release date 6th November (Strong Language) Chef Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) had it all - and lost it. To land his own kitchen and that third elusive Michelin star though, he'll need the best of the best on his side, including the beautiful Helene (Sienna Miller).

Steve Jobs (15) - Release date 13th November (Strong Language) Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.

NT Live - Of Mice and Men (12A) - Release date 19th November (Moderate sex references and moderate bad language) The hit Broadway production Of Mice and Men, filmed on stage in New York by National Theatre Live, comes to UK cinemas. This landmark revival of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck's play is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship.

Fierce Fun Film review - The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part II Release date - 20th November 2015

http://www.empireonline.com/movies/hunger-games-mockingjay-part-2/ review/ Picking up where Mockingjay — Part 1 finished, the stakes could not be higher, nor our heroine’s trauma more profound. While the society of Panem examines how governments use fear to control us, the character stories are all about the damage caused by violence — both given and received. The ever-victorious Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is just as broken as the brainwashed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) or the twisted President Snow (Donald Sutherland). At times this film suggests that, even should she survive, there won’t be much left of her. Still, the emotional weight doesn’t detract from a pulse-pounding journey. Director Francis Lawrence dreams up stunning action beats as Katniss and her squad pick their way through the ruined Capitol, avoiding the spectacular booby traps dreamt up by clearly demented Gamemakers. Over and under looming fascist architecture, stripped of all colour except grey, there are chase scenes straight out of horror and action that recalls Star Wars or The Terminator rather than the earlier Games films. Katniss aims to assassinate Snow and end the war — but of course, her plan doesn’t go to plan. If anything, this is too faithful to the book, sometimes getting bogged down in detail as Katniss struggles to her goal. But its epic sweep, grand designs and unyielding central performance make this a compelling finale.

Never get caught out needing a wee again... The Great British Public Toilet Map was launched on Wednesday 19th November on World Toilet Day. Previous versions of the map have existed since 2011, but this is now the largest publicly accessible toilet database in the UK by some way. It has over 9500 toilets, and I’d be confident of saying that the map will help you to find toilets no matter where you live. https://gailknight.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/the-great-british-public-toilet-map/

Fierce Food Winter one-pot meals

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/one-pot

There is nothing better than good, warming food during the winter - and especially when you can throw it all in one pot to cook it.

Merguez beanpot Serves: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes Skill level: Easy

Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 500g merguez sausages, cut into bite-sized pieces (or normal sausages if you prefer) 2 onions, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp each Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard and brown sugar 2 x 400g cans cannellini beans or red kidney beans, drained coriander or parsley and tortillas, to serve

Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the sausages and fry until browned. Add the onions and pepper, and fry for 5 mins until softened. Add the tomatoes and 1 can of water, the Worcestershire sauce, mustard and sugar. Season and bring to the boil. Give it a stir, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 15 mins. 2.

Stir in the beans, return to a simmer and cook for a further 5 mins. Scatter with parsley or coriander and serve in bowls with tortillas.

Moroccan Chicken One-Pot Serves: 6 Prep time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 50 minutes Skill level: Easy Ingredients 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 3 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, 1 roughly chopped, 1 sliced 100g tomatoes 100g ginger, roughly chopped 3 garlic cloves 1 tsp turmeric 1 tbsp each ground cumin, coriander and cinnamon 1 large butternut squash, deseeded and cut into big chunks 600ml chicken stock 2 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 100g dried cherries To serve 1 small red onion, finely chopped zest 1 lemon handful mint leaves 100g feta cheese, crumbled couscous and natural yogurt Method 1. Season the chicken. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a flameproof dish, then brown the chicken on all sides. Remove the chicken to a plate. Whizz the chopped onion, tomatoes, ginger and garlic into a rough paste. Fry the sliced onion in the remaining oil in the dish until softened, then add the spices and fry for 1 min more until fragrant. Add the paste and fry for another few mins to soften. 2.

Return the chicken to the dish with the squash, stock, sugar and vinegar. Bring to a simmer, then cook for 30 mins until the chicken is cooked through. Lift the chicken out and stir in the cherries, then continue simmering the sauce to thicken while you shred the chicken into bite-sized chunks. Stir the chicken back into the sauce and season.

3.

Mix the red onion, lemon zest, mint and feta. Scatter over the dish, then serve with some couscous and yogurt.
