THE WASTE CATHEDRAL This thesis project explores speculative architectural design responses to complex situation of Anglesea, Victoria, where is a post-mining seaside town on the Great Ocean Road. The site is surrounded by a rich biodiversity and this project provides a chance on proving how architecture can help in restoring the polluted environment and let human develop their own senses of awareness towards the environmental protections.

Anglesea has rich biodiversities that many animal species could be found, however, the development of previous coal mine excavations and power station nearby have created lots of undesirable problems and pollutions to the wildlife there.

7

1

Assigned contractors usually collect household wastes from street bins.

4

2

The collected waste will be transported by trucks to Angelsea, as a central collection point.

After sorting all the recyclable wastes in transfer stations, and the remaining non-recyclable wastes will be disposed into the Anglesea landfill nearby.

5

3

All wastes will be sorted based on their nature by hands in the transfer stations in Anglesea, especially recyclable wastes.

The collected recyclable wastes will be delivered to Geelong for further processes and be recycled into other resources after.

Current Waste Treatment in Anglesea

The waste cathedral is a prototype reinterpret waste collection and restore the landfill area in Anglesea; and where human can repent their sins through series of ritual engagements in the directive journey in order to turn into a sinless community in the future.

9

1 Contemplation Sort and dispose waste based on their nature; hanging magnet balls at the back can define whether the metal is ferrous or not.

2 Purification Rinse plastic bottles along the artificial river that collects rainwater from the umbrella structures, and be brought down for further treatments.

3 Enlightenment Research centres here investigate possible solutions of turning waste into new resources and minimize solid wastes to benefit the society.

4 Redemption Visitor sacrifice their energy, equivalent to the amount of waste they disposed, to ignite the incinerator to burn down the non-recyclable wastes by cycling.

5 Reincarnation All collected waste will undergo serious of treatments and will be given an entire new life as a new resouces.

6 Rewards An agricultural zone that greets with a cloud of mist and the fresh produces are here as rewards.

11

All the gathered food waste will be temporarily stored for sterilization and will then be crushed into smaller pieces by the blender. The water molecules in the small food waste particles will be removed by the spinning dehydrator in high speed. After filtered, the fine food waste particles will be transported to the garden through the sprinklers.

Metal can be distinguished by their nature into ferrous or non-ferrous, magnet balls will be a testing tools for people to find out their nature and dispose them correctly. The wastes will then moved to the anodized tank after crushed into small pieces for removing impurities. Smelter can further melt the metal waste into liquid forms and for later use.

Food Wastes

Metal Wastes

People will first rinse their plastic bottle wastes along the purification rive and then be brought down for further crushing into small pieces. The smelter will turn the plastic into liquid form under high temperature; it can be turned into two types of final products upon various usages, namely the plastic pellets and plastic filaments.

Not all waste can be recycled, so the non-recyclable waste is collected and burnt down by the incinerator. Visitors will have to cycle to ignite the incinerator and they have to generate the amount of energy that equivalent to the amount of waste they have produced, where there is an indicator aside to provide the data. The break-down waste will turn into a ring of smoke to remind people how much waste they have been produced.

The design purpose is correspond to a typology combining living and working together within a skinny building in the heart of a city centre; and how to strike a balance between two major criterion through the distribution and relationship of internal spatial arrangement. So as to let the users/ owners of this building can truly engage in a work-live balance when especially the building locates in a business district with many programmatically-mixed buildings, which the combinations of office and living space are commonly found.

Shaping Urban Living Studio Project - 2016 Studio Leaders : Ben Duckworth & Mark Loughnan | Run by Hassell

This studio is about the research, testing and realising of rules in specific cities, i.e. Hong Kong, Sydney, San Francisco, Singapore and London, so as to understand the variations of different housing design standards across cities as well as to study the pros and cons of how the set rules affect the building designs. We exploit the opportunities and possibilities of resolving current urban situations and constraints through applying and reconsidering a new set of housing rules. So as to establish a rules-responsive and cohesive residential tower design. i) Tower - To create an unique and remarkable tower in sculptural features. ii) Podium - Encourage public engagement that possess clusters of shared activities. iii) Be “Green - To provide sufficient green space/area for residents to connect with nature.

17

This residential tower encourages a self-sustaining idea that the living place contains lists of activities to support their daily living and their needs. Unique features such as green balustrade, green open space and the green division help extend green space from flagstaff garden to each apartment.

Green Balustrade

Green Open Space

Green Division

Every unit is surrounded by greeneries, with the embedded planter on balustrade.

Green open space locates throughout the building, where mostly in the N-facing sides.

Green Division helps divide units along the panoramic balcony.

To achieve a co-exist and harmonious living environment by providing both green feature and numerous of activities to support residents livings. The major attraction is the co-existence of greenery and activities; to make the living spaces more vivid and sustainable. Panoramic view created by a walk-around balcony of differing width that allow people to see both nature and cityscape with possibly uninterrupted view. Upper level offer sweeping views of the city and garden.

Turkish Bathhouse Studio Project - 2015 Studio Leader : Rennie Liffen

The studio brief is to create an architecture of a new public bathhouse set on a detailed hypothetical site embedded in the central city of Cukurcuma, Istanbul. Learning how to incorporate the unique and local bathing experience by exploring on the composition of materiality, functional space and atmospheric environments, focus on the sensory profiles of architectural spaces using creative but disciplined drawing and model making as iterative investigative tools in order to create unique spatial experience and bathing journey in the final design outcome. Consideration of architectural space in the context of all five senses is the critical role of applying technology and materials in the production of the sensory profiles of architectural spaces.

The rising steam engulfs the room quickly and warms the space. Hot water is delivered all the way from ceiling to the bath through the exposed copper pipes. The mineral rich bath water drips comfortingly and leaves some rusty stains on the pipes as well as the rough concrete wall. The pleasant aroma from the mineral water calms and creates a pressure-free space for bathers. The sunlight creeps in through the gaps of timber screen and the heat inside protects bathers from the snowy weather outside.

Fire Bath

A fountain bath which jets water into the air to supply cleansing water. Playing on the concrete tiles, bathers can scoop and drink the bath water with the essence of minerals and the saltiness. The water from the fountain is actually filtered recycling bath water from the sound bath next to it, so the warmth retains in the fountain even it is an outdoor bath, bathers can enjoy a view of the surrounding houses.

SOLAR RADIATION ANGLE

Applied Construction After initial design stages, we will have to consider series of construction technologies and practical methods in order to design a commercial multi-storey building; which then implement the optimal construction principles to form a technically coherent design. Have been trying to figure a design that with both active and passive system approaches, PV panels installed on facade in order to supply electricity to the building, and is installed at the top part with 15 degrees tilted to receive maximum sunlight. While the passive shingled facade system provides shading effect as the inclined 3D MODEL ILLUSTRATES THE POSITION OF PV help PANEL AND SHINGLE GLASS angle avoid direct sunlight.

ACTIVE SYSTEM APPROACH CURTAIN CURTAIN BUILDING INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAIC SHINGLE WALL WALL GLASS MODULES CAN ABSORB AND GLAZING DIRECTLY CONVERT THE SOLAR RADIATION ENERGY INTO ELECTRICITY WHICH ABLE TO SUPPLY BACK TO THE BUILDING AND THIS POTENTIAL IS ENDLESS

THE PV PANELS ARE INSTALLED MOSTLY AT THE TOP PART OF THE BUILDING FACING NW DIRECTION WITH 15o TILTED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE SUNLIGHT. ALSO, CAN MAKE GOOD USE OF THE UNUSED SURFACES OF THE BUILDING. SUN OR MAXIMU PASSIVE SYSTEM APPROACH SHINGLE FACADE SYSTEMS PROVIDES SHADING EFFECTS AS THE INCLINED ANGLE CAN AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT. USE SUNLIGHT WITHOUT ACTIVE MECHANICAL SYSTEM
