alley Art has just completed celebrating 50 years as the artistic center of our Forest Grove community. With the dedication and commitment of thousands of volunteers, the generosity of loyal donors and — most importantly — the talent and skill of hundreds of local artists, Valley Art has enhanced the cultural fabric of our community for more than five decades. It is positioned to help keep art alive and well in our region for many more. Valley Art Association was founded by a group of dedicated volunteers who understood the important role of the arts and culture in a vibrant society. And Valley Art is still proud today to be an entirely volunteer run organization with a strong track record of serving the community and its artists. We are a key community gathering place and cultural center for artists, teachers, students and art lovers in our region. As we entered our 50th anniversary year we were at the ideal moment to initiate a project to completely overhaul the front

However, our building is over 87 years old and as we began our storefront improvement we found the front wall was in need of serious structural upgrades as well as asbestos abatement. The art that local artist Eric Canon had installed needed to be cleaned and updated and the awning was leaking and needed to be replaced. his year, we were fortunate to be selected for a Metro Storefront Improvement Matching grant. This significant achievement provides not only needed resources but is an affirmation by our regional governing body of the important place we hold in the cultural and economic fabric of our community. This matching grant is the backbone of our fundraising to complete this much needed construction. By making our building structurally sound and improving the gallery’s appearance, we expect to safely be here for years to come to both promote and heighten the overall awareness of our gallery in Forest Grove and the surrounding communities. As our year ends you can help us continue to serve as a critical part of Forest Grove’s cultural landscape. Your gift will support our Storefront Restoration, a project that is vital to the health and stability of the organization and its gallery. The storefront restoration project has

received the support and endorsement of Metro, the Oregon Community Foundation and many individual donors, both large and small. We hope you will join them in your commitment to Valley Art Association with a generous gift today. Over the years, donations have helped us inspire the next generation of artists through our art education classes and scholarship program. They have assured artists’ access to a vital outlet for their creativity so they can continue to share the richness of their work with all of us. Please help us continue to serve our community by giving a year-end gift. Your contribution today will support Valley Art’s efforts to foster creativity and community both now and for years to come.

he 2016 AAE began with “Golden Artistry” on Member’s Night, Friday, Nov. 11. Our party for ourselves — with such good food prepared by our members and guests — was very special this year as we celebrated our 50th anniversary as a nonprofit art gallery and education resource in Forest Grove. Valley Art members received a 10 percent discount on everything purchased that evening. Tarot card reader Melanie Gurley entertained with revealing insights that “hit the mark” for many of us. There were also five $20 gift certificate drawings throughout the night. Wine, bought throughout the year for Valley Art by First Wednesday chairwoman Margaret Hoerber, was enjoyed too. This is one of the benefits of living in the Willamette Jim and Judy Zaleski visit Valley: our close association with so many Valley Art in November. fine winemakers. That Saturday, Nov. 12, we welcomed artists Ginger Steele (below, left) and Maureen Welborn (below, right) to the gallery to demonstrate their skills. The Saturday after that, Barbara Martin and Susan Curington introduced visitors to their methods of producing art. On Sunday, Nov. 13, Briana Olvera, a McMinnville chef, served guests in the gallery some other delightful treats from our rich Willamette Valley. The lunch she prepared included squash soup with pistou — an olive oil-based green sauce that floated atop the soup; a great brussel sprout salad; roasted chicken; and dessert. It was all delicious and the event was fun! Continued on page 3

Other events during the the Annual Artist Event were the Chamber/Merchant Night on Tuesday, Nov. 15; Community Day, Wednesday, Nov. 16; Puzzler Day, Thursday, Nov. 17; and Art Skirmish, Friday, Nov. 17. During Puzzler Day at the gallery shoppers were invited to choose a puzzle piece to see if they had won a prize. Several nice gifts were given away. ithout our volunteers there is not much that would have gotten done in 2016. First of all our doors might have been open only three days a week instead of six. We might have been open only four hours a day rather than the six and a half hours we are now. Let’s hear a cheer for our gallery attendants! Without our volunteer board of directors and our committee chairs there would have been few decisions made and disasters averted. No committee chairs = no event planning = no fundraising. Let’s hear a cheer for board members and the volunteers who help make all sorts of events possible! And without our gallery volunteers who hang the artwork and arrange the 3-D art we might not have such an elegant looking gallery. Let’s hear a cheer for the volunteers who arrange and hang Valley Art’s merchandise. There is just no way our gallery could exist without our volunteers. They were important in 1966 and 50 years later they are still essential. Do you have a few hours a month — or every other month — to give? We can always find something for helpers to do … and we’ll make sure you are happy with your job. Look online - valleyart.org - for a volunteer form and bring it into the gallery or just stop by for more information. Thank you!

AUNTIE CARLA’S PUMPKIN CORNBREAD It is impossible to just have one piece. Ingredients: 2 cups cornmeal 2 tbs. baking powder 4 eggs

Bake for 25 minutes, or until a cake tester or toothpick stuck in the middle of the cornbread comes out dry. 7. Let the cornbread cool for ten minutes, and then cut into pieces and serve. Or bring it to the next reception at Valley Art! 3

elow is an original drawing of Valley Art by our president, Emily Lux. It will be so nice when our storefront is renovated, Eric Canon’s metalwork is polished and we have good looking, energy efficient UV coated glass in the windows. With a fine new door, we will be all set in 2017 for another great 50 years.

These paintings by Helvi Smith arrived in the gallery for the Annual Artist Event and still may be available. These paintings might make good mood indicators for your home! 6

Art Skirmish earns ‘most popular event’ status

Elf workshop is great success

O

T

he annual elf workshop — a popular part of Holiday in the Grove each year — brought over 120 young artists to Valley Art on Dec. 3. Each elf made a snow-filled clear globe ornament and added small holiday charms inside. It was a busy, busy day with artificial snow and glitter swirling everywhere. Lots of fun for everyone. Thank you to everyone who attended and all the great parents who pitched in and helped. Look for Holiday in the Grove next year. There are many fun events throughout the town.

ur Annual Artist Event committee thanks the following artists — April Hoff, Emily Lux, Nate Marcel, Barbara Martin, Lang Schwartzwald, and Helvi Smith — for their participation in the Nov. 18th Art Skirmish. Each one of them completed an acrylic painting in the allotted three hours. Each artist donated their resulting painting, and they are being sold, unframed, in a unique, ongoing silent auction. The bidding deadline has been extended to January 15th. All proceeds will go towards Valley Art’s storefront renovation project. Bidding starts at $75 per painting, with a “Buy Now” option at $298. This is a unique opportunity to purchase “live” art, created by Forest Grove artists in the very space the event is intended to support. You can’t get any more local than that! Thank you again, artists, and thank you, Coin Club band members Kirk Larson and Don Patch. The gallery welcomed quite a few new guests that evening whom we hope to see again soon.
