1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Each model was taken some elements into the final design, which include the design, materials and the secret. Firstly, the composition and the story of the design objects are used as the farmland. It starts with small object, seats and stairs, then build some larger construction, which are shelters and functional room. It is an evocative emergence of point to line to plane. The design also is a sequence of forms changing from the horizontal to the vertical and back to the ground. The secret of the project is secret of nature, which relates to how a seed grow and the changing in a farmland. Secondly, the concept of transparency and colour of the second model was taken into the final model. Using material to hide and expose the secret on site. Glasses are used for visitors to find the secret out, and colours are used as a decoration on the design as it is a plain and simple, it can create a nice shadow on the ground as well. Lastly, the mass drawing is looking at the section of a tree, which is same as the idea of secret of the nature. Looking the tree roots, how the plates grow and soil is the main idea of the whole project.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE The idea of point, line ad plane is present by this model, a farmland. The concept of P/L/P is regarding to either lines or planes, the all start from a point. When a point extended, it becomes a line. While there are numbers of lines, plane will be formed. It is same as the idea of a farmland. When a seed grow, and becomes crop, then form a farmland. There are also a sequence of forms changing from the horizontal to the vertical and then back to the

1.2 FRAME & INFILL The frame and infill model was inspired by the idea of cubic cube. It tells there are different kinds of infill which include visible, invisible, external, internal or even removable. Besides, frame also can be in many shapes and proportions. Transparency and colour are used in the infill elements and create a sense of changing of volumes, and it can be explored as the material to hide or expose the secret on site.

1.3 MASS These two drawings explored the underground texture more. Near under level and building objects will be relatively high density, and the soil will look looser than them. The first drawing was looking at section of tree and tree roots, and the second drawing was looking at a section of an island.

2.0 CONCEPT MASS 3D MODEL 2.1 DIGITIZATION & Design Development Intro This digital model referred to my very first sketch, which drew a sphere and cover by a normal building structure. It would be interesting to look at how light will reflect in a circle shape. The reason of choosing this is regarding I think it will be more challenging to print a semi sphere and see how the entry connect from ground to underground.

2.2 OUTCOME

The outcome is very successful, that look as same as the digital model.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is located in Mlebourne’s Yarra Ruver at South Yarra, approximately 3 km from city. It is a park that claimed as a haven for nature. There are more than 38 species of vegetations in the site. Some of them are the few remnants of indigenous riparian forest and glassland. Therefore, this project will look at the secret of the nature- underground, that includes looking at the tree roots, soil, insects or even water flow. The middle part of the site exist more than four kind of plants which are austral Tobaccov, common apple berry, spiny headedmat rad and wedge- leaf Hop Bush. Brief: a place where a small object can be viewed by only one person at a time.

Vegetation

According to Only Melbourne-Parks, Gardens & Cemeteries, there are few remnants of indigenous riparian forest and grassland communities in Herring Island. A number of native and exotic vegetation are planted more than sixty years. The perimeter of the island was relativity more plantings in the past, however, there are more vegetation are planted in the central flat areas either. It is stated that Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata), Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) and Southern Mahogany (botryoides) are most popular vegetation in Herring Island.

Robert Bridgewater 1999

Vegetation3: Melbourne sculptor Robert Bridgewater Austral Tobaccov designed and installed a sinuous form detailed with intricate patterning carved in cypress macrocarpa, “Scaled Stem” can be linked with a budding plant, a club, a fishing float, kitchen utensil or scientific apparatus or the 1999 Melbourne Festival. Bridgewater mentions that the organic worked textures of “Scaled Stem” highlight “an inseparability and interdependence between notions of nature and culture”.

Austral Tobacco () Leafy herb related to commercial tobacco. Leaves have been chewed as a substitute for commercial tobacco.

Vegetation4: Wedge-leaf Hop Bush Wedge-leaf Hop Bush ) Papery red seed capsules were used by European settlers as “hops” in beer making. Wurundjeri people chewed the leaves to relieve tooth-ache, and bound them on their skin to treat stingray wounds.

John Gollings with Samantha Slicer 2001 Extending the traditions formed in the 1970s of earthworks and environmental art, ‘Falling Fence’ is the first major sculptural work by internationally acclaimed Melbourne based photographer John Gollings and his assistant Samantha Slicer. The work has been designed specifically for its site on the Northern bank of the island.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

The design concept is putting a number of cubes into the underground, in order to explore the nature of secret. They will put in different levels of the group, and put near to the plant and tree. The cube will be formed by one transparent side for looking through the underground soil, tree roots and insects.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT A random composition of the cubes is replaced by a ‘C’ shape placement. It refers to the position of the existing vegetation. In order not to cut down any plates or tree, the cube will place along them. Besides, some cubes are developed into different shapes and integrate more idea of the first model- farmland. It starts will with some small seats and stairs, then changing into a bigger objects, such as shelter and functional room.

3.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS The design are mainly from by seven parts, which include toilet technical room, shelter, places for exploring secret and seats. They are formed with three main materials that are concrete, glasses and mirror. The sides of facing towards the center are the mirrors. It works as the function of hiding secret since it reflects and hides in the surrounding. It is similar to people trying to hide their secret. On the hand, when they walk inside, they can find out the secret by looking through the glasses. The glassed are trying to put at different sides, in order to, provide more views of the underground to the visitors. The secret are changeable, for example the visitor can see the soil with water in the raining day, but some may not. One of the special thing about nature is it is unique. Moreover, the objects are put in different height to the underground. They refer to the eyelevel of male, female and children, to ensure everyone can look at the ground level at their eyelevel.

4.0 REFLECTION This is a good experience to work on the three totally unrelated ideas to and bring them into one design project. After studying this course, I found out ideas and concept can come across when u start to draw a line or only cutting a sheet of paper. Sometimes, we do not have to start our work when the whole image in our mind. Besides, it is good to look at other’s work as they can enhance our knowledge and bring us new concept. Furthermore, a successful design should a good reason to explain every decision, for example, the reason of choosing this particular site, or the reason of the height and size of the design. In this project, I think there are several things can do better. Firstly, more research should be done. The secret of my project is the secret of the nature; however, the information of underground is not convincing enough, further exploration should be investigated to make the whole project more interesting. Besides, presentation also is a significant part in a project. Choosing the right pictures and words can help the reader easier to understand our work. Lastly, there is one thing to bear in mind, which is nothing can satisfy all people, environment or the society. We should choose the one that we think is comparatively suitable and try to convince ourselves with the reason and concept.
