Newspaper 2016-2017
I work well with the others for the most part. There is difficulty at times but for the majority of the time, I have no problems working with the other editors. One thing I would do differently next year is Self Evaluation be less lenient, the paper is on a set timetable meaning there is no room for error, errors that have occurred far too much this year. I have seemingly also allowed others to walk over me due to the understanding that I show. It has affected my relationships with my peers by making them more workplace proximity associates than friends. The pro is that I have no one to answer to aside from Adamson and Hart, but the con is the fact that I need to babysit some editors and staff to ensure that they actually complete their work on time. I try my best to lead by example, a method that as of late has proved to be somewhat fruitless. I’ll be changing my style of leadership greatly to one that will show results. I learned that the amount of real world experience that I would be receiving would not be as obvious as I thought it was when it comes to leadership. I’ll be able to use this knowledge in any leadership position that I will carry later in life. This semester has taught me how and how not to act as a leader. I learned that deadlines seem to come faster when much of the paper is still being worked on. I will make sure that articles will be done by the final draft date, I will bring results without the false promises that always seem to accompany them. Staying late and coming in early has become a common ritual in regards to my dedication to the paper. Most recently I’ve stayed late during lunch and class to ensure that the December issue was ready for print, and I was checking it up until it was sent to the printers. Becoming a strong, respected leader was my biggest problem that I hope to soon fix. I handled the approaching deadlines with a swift and level head. The best way to overcome the weaknesses that I have is to mentally prepare myself to be the leader I need to be. I will also stop caring so much about what others think to be more sure of myself.
The spread that I am most proud of would be the November Trending Now page. I fell like the pictures that I chose worked the best out of any of the trending pages this year. The articles were relevant at the time, with Senior Assassins occuring and the clown panic was sweeping the nation. This was not difficult to complette because I followed the basic trending page formula. The layout changed many times before it became the page it is now. The articles in orange were originally on the opposite side of the page, but some of the pictures and articles did not match up well that way. The most significant coontribution that I have madde to the publication so far would be the time that I have put into the paper, staying late on production days, making sure that everyone had completted the pages to the best of their ability. I have tried to, in a way, make the paper a calm atmosphere by keeping a calm mentality as Trending Editor in Chief. It has been difficult but HIGH SCHOOL HIT MEN rewarding in the end, staff talk tome about the problems that they are having. High school students all around the nation eagerly await their senior year so they finally have the opportunity to compete in a live-action game known as Senior Assassins. Divided into teams of two, students attempt to eliminate their peers using water guns and the last team standing is crowned the winner. In order to play, each student must pay a participation fee, which is added to the prize for the winners at the end of the game, which many find very motivating. “If I won senior assassins, I would probably save as much of the money as I could,” said Greg Isho, a senior. The game has been going on since August, so many students have already been eliminated, narrowing down the competition. The game can be equally as fun for the students who are not playing. “My favorite part is watching the game from my perspective. Knowing who has who for their targets and watching them try to figure it out and shoot people is so entertaining to me,” said Payton Atkins, the senior in charge of senior assassins. Assassinating peers with water guns may seem like a simple task at first, but staying in the game is harder than it sounds. If a team does not get any kills after six weeks with assigned targets, they are automatically eliminated from the game. “It is more work then you think, if you want to win you are going to have to try hard,” said Isho. According to NBC News, students find senior assassins a fun way to blow off steam, but, “some school administrators and police officials fear that it could have
serious effects,” due to the violent nature of the game. The idea of shooting people with water guns worries some people in communities around the United States. Some schools in other parts of the nation have even banned the game and created harsh consequences for students caught playing. “If students were allowed to play senior assassins on campus, it would be fun but it would also serve as a distraction from their education. It is also good that the game is not permitted on campus or at school related events because it divides the student body. When students are competing in a game, they become less united,” said Allison Zilka, a social studies teacher. To maintain order and keep the community at ease about the game, a set of rules have been created for all participating students. A basic rule is not playing anywhere on school grounds or in the workplace. Students are also “safe” when they are participating in a sport or any sort of school organized event, whether it is on the campus or not. “The hardest part is getting criticism from people about the game and the rules and trying not to let it affect me too much,” said Atkins. Senior assassins demonstrate school spirit by bringing the senior class together and allows students to get involved outside of school on a daily basis. “What makes senior assassins fun is the excitement of getting people out and the competition,” said Isho. Students interact with peers that they normally would not and the game creates a better sense of community among the senior class.

CLOWN LIVES MATTER By SEAN GANNON g staff writer
Killer clowns have been popping up and terrifying people all around the world. Originally, the clown trend started on August 1 in Green Bay, Wisconsin and was a way to hype people up for Halloween. They have been spotted everywhere from Alabama and Ohio to Denmark and New Zealand. This was taken to another level when clowns started luring people in the woods and abandoned buildings. Then, on September 27, Phoenix police reported a man in a clown mask robbed a fast food restaurant. On October 23, a US student in Cambodia was approached and chased by a clown. The student died by running into the jungle to escape the clown, not knowing the section of jungle was riddled with land mines.

Denim on denim is making its way into the fashion industry, and many are indulging in this trend. There are a lot of ways to wear this jean on jean fashion, and recently those ways have been traveling all around social media. Seeing teenagers or even adults wearing a blue denim jacket and white or black denim jeans is common, but recently many models, celebrities, and everyday teenagers are taking that to a new level. According to thejeansblog.com, many people think that double denim is not allowed, however, when it is done right it can look amazing. Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid are just some of the icons that take part in a blue denim on blue denim trend. They have been spotted wearing blue jeans with a denim button up shirt, or a jean jacket paired with a ripped up jean skirt. Usually, these two types of denim are different shades, but anything is possible. High school students and young adults are seen pairing these two fabrics together in any way possible. Jean jackets, skirts, button downs, tank tops, and shorts are just a handful of denim items that are used in the jean on jean trend.

Nintendo announced a new console that combines a home console and a handheld console on October 20. The company has kept the console under wraps until the announcement, teasing only the name Nintendo NX. The predecessor of the Wii U will return to company’s roots and utilize game cartridges, replacing the basic disc. With this change, the Switch will not be backwards compatible with the Wii U or 3DS games. The Nintendo Switch is slated for an early 2017 release date, featuring a variety of third party companies and ports of popular Wii U games.

“We won state by 23 strokes, our biggest competition with Chaparral and Notre Dame because they were probably better than us for most of the season,” said Senior Golfer, Chantal Savoie, “but we worked hard to beat them.” In the previous season, the girls golf team took home the silver, however, they hungered for the gold. Through hard work and two hour practices Monday through Thursday, they pushed to improve from their previous successful season, both physically and mentally. “To get ready for state we did a lot of mental stuff,” said Savoie, “Like really trying to stay focused at practice and practice chipping and putting because that can really help.” With the tension building, Sunday finally arrived and along with it, doubts, nervous anticipation, and an underlying excitement. “I felt fantabulous,” said girls golf coach, Mark O’Bryan. “I felt really good and I knew these girls were gonna play amazing. They were on the upswing. I told everyone these girls were ready to go.” After three days of competition, the state title was in sight and in the end, became a reality for the girls gold team. However, with the win came the bittersweet end to the season. “ I was really anxious for the last day because I was playing with one of the best people in the state, so the nerves got to me a little bit,” said Taylor Harvey, a sophomore.

Steven Bebee, principal. These lines were not labeled on the construction plans by the previous company that had done work on campus. Correcting the previously unknown data and phone lines had cause unexpected delays, pushing the expected opening date back a few weeks. “I can’t imagine how it is for the whole football team to fit in there, so the increase in space will be good,” said Sierra Fluegel, a junior and soccer player. The new field house will hold the home and away teams, while also serving concessions and serving as the main entrance to the football field. The current locker room is still in service for the sports teams while the construction is finishing. The locker rooms inside the field house will be increased from the current home and away team lockers. “It’s more of a just we have a joke,” said Ian Jeffer, a senior and football player.“Like when we do side leans we say facing the home locker and we say ‘which way.’” There is also a new softball field being added as well as an expansion to the tennis courts to allow for games to be held and viewed on campus, and a discus and shotput area for track and field.
“It looks pretty sick, right now, like just the way it’s being all built up, I wish I was in it, but honestly I’m happy that we’re having a good season,” said Jeffer. The field house will now be established as the main entrance to the Nest, with main parking being in the Fine Art Center lot, where a paved pathway will be built near the FAC to guide visitors to the entrance. “The only exception will be then, the new bleachers and tearing down the old existing bleachers, all of that stuff is going to begin construction as soon as football season is over,” said Bebee. “They’re going to take over what we have now as the visitors side and they will begin taking out those bleachers and starting to do the new bleachers.” The visitor’s concession stand and restrooms will also be torn down with the bleachers. The home and away bleachers will switch sides, with the Falcon bleachers now facing the right of the new entrance and visitors on the right. “I think it won’t be the same because the home bleachers were used for so long it will be weird to switch,” said Fluegel. The sports teams have not been affected by the construction or the delays to the field house, which is expected to open around Thanksgiving weekend.

don’t ask, don’t tell Abstinence-only education is taught in Arizona, which has been an effective method for the school system so far. It teaches not to have sex outside of marriage. It works well and gives parents the option to teach sex education to their children themselves. It is most important for parents to teach their children about this subject matter because it is up to the discretion of the parents as to how much teenagers can and should be taught. While waiting until marriage can seem like a long time, and it may seem like a waste of an education to many, it is important for a variety of reasons. For one thing, it could make things more special with a married partner if both parties remained abstinent until the wedding night. Students may also feel some kind of pressure to participate in more sexual activities after being taught in-depth sex education. There is an implicit suggestion that, by teaching teenagers about sex, it is okay for them to have sex. This may not be the intention of the program, but everyone knows that if a subject is taught in school, it gives it a certain legitimacy. Religion also plays a major factor “Calling in abstinence. Opponents argue that teens are health classes.” having sex any way, so it is more responsible for schools to educate them about it. After all, there are many parents who may not opt to teach their children about safe sex, or they may even teach them incorrectly. There can be miscommunication or false information that could lead to dangers down the line. According to Marla Eisenberg of the Guttmacher Institute, “Even when parents provide information, their knowledge about contraception or other sexual health topics may often be inaccurate or incomplete.” Although it makes sense to teach teens the basics of safe sex, it should be something that is discussed in greater detail after marriage. Currently, teenagers are taught all that they need to know in their health classes. Plus, teaching in-depth sex education does not guarantee that teenagers won’t contract STDs or get pregnant. The easiest solution would be to just wait until marriage, and, if necessary, learn about contraceptives as a precaution, but don’t plan to use them. Abstinence is meant to be used to wait to find the right person. Promoting sex education is essentially promoting teens to have sex much earlier than they should. This is why parents should be the ones to teach their kids, because they know when it is most appropriate.

On November 8, Donald Trump was elected president, marking the beginning of the end. His demeaning comments, severe lack of experience, and overall hotheaded personality has the majority of progressive Americans terrified. They have every right to be scared. A Trump presidency means going back 50 years. His proposed plans and recent cabinet appointments suggest the return of ideologies that should have been left in 1960. Trump ran on the campaign slogan: Make America Great Again, promising to return us to our glory days. Which begs the question what, exactly, is wrong with America? The Treasury Department just announced that we now have the lowest unemployment rate since before George W. Bush took office, FBI statistics show that violent crime has decreased steadily over the past 20 years, and, despite Trump’s claim to the contrary, repeated studies show that there is no correlation between immigrants and violent crimes. In fact, the only thing that has changed in America since the “good old days” is that we are more diverse. In 1980, white people made up 80 percent of America’s population, and today, they make up only 63 percent. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of his presidency is the blatant racism during and after his campaign. Before he was elected, Trump received support from many infamous white nationalist groups, including but not limited to the KKK and its former leader David Duke. He also appointed Steve Bannon as his chief strategist and senior advisor. Bannon is the executive chairman at Breitbart News, an alt-right news source broadcasting homophobic, sexist, and racist stories. Talk about unfair, biased media. Trump himself has made many comments degrading women and minorities. "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best," he said. "They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists." What he said about women is not decent to print in a high school newspaper. If Trump wanted to really show that he was for these minorities, he should have picked a somewhat more open minded running mate. Mike Pence, the vice president elect, is known for his anti-LGBT stance. Another major cause for concern are his views on global warming. In a tweet earlier this year, he said that “the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese.” His choice to appoint Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency is a clear signal that he plans to cut funding to global warming research and prevention. Pruitt has denied that climate change exists, despite the fact that the majority of scientists agree that it is real and that humans contribute to it. Trump’s actions over the next four years have serious consequences for the future of our planet. Trump supporters often cite that he will make America safer by dealing with our immigration problem. This is understandable, illegal immigration is a problem that needs to be dealt with. But building a wall is not going to stop illegal immigrants from coming into the country. It even seems that Trump has begun to realize this, as he said on a 60 Minutes interview that he would rather build a fence and then increase security. Another reason he is well liked by his supporters is the fact that he is a successful businessman, and that he will bring these skills to the White House to “fix” our broken country. Yet everyone seems to disregard the fact that he has had four companies that have declared bankruptcy, which raises the question as to whether or not America will be dealt the same fate. He also just agreed to pay $25 million to settle a fraud lawsuit against Trump University, for hundreds of students who were tricked into believing they were getting something they were not. Is this really the kind of leader we want for our country? Despite the obvious fact that he has had no political experience and lacks the thick skin that is needed in politicians, Donald Trump will be our next president. It is ironic that one of Trump’s promises was to “drain the swamp” of corruption, but it seems that he is only adding to it by appointing cabinet members who donated heavily to his campaign: a billionaire who has no education experience to run the Department of Education, an anti-climate change man to run the Environmental Protection Agency, and the list goes on. Given all of the above, it is not any wonder that sensible Americans are worried about the Donald Trump presidency. THE CACTUS SHADOWS PRESS

WHAT’S MY WORK WORTH?
THE POSSIBLE MINIMUM WAGE
By ALEX LAGGREN g editor in chief
his November, Arizona voters will choose whether or not the standard minimum wage will be increased to $12 by 2020. “I believe that the increase would benefit the economy because, with a greater supply of money, people would be willing to spend more money and save less since they have a higher income,” said Cailan Cordwell, a senior. The Minimum Wage and Paid Time Off Initiative, listed as Proposition 206, will be on the ballot on November 8. If passed, the minimum wage in Arizona will raise from $8.05 to $12.
$10 IN 2017
The last time that the minimum wage increased was back in 2009, when it went up to $7.25 from $6.55. A sudden increase of two dollars could impact small businesses more than large corporations. To help small businesses adjust to the increase, the proposition proposes that the minimum wage first increase to $10 by 2017, and than to $12 by 2020. “For some families, minimum wage is their only income and in today’s economy it’s financially impossible to provide the basic needs for one person on minimum wage let

AZCentral, “A Maricopa County Superior Court judge dismissed Friday a lawsuit challenging thousands of petitions gathered supporting the citizen ballot initiative to increase Arizona’s minimum wage.”
150,642 SUPPORTERS
For the proposition to be placed on the ballot, 150,642 signatures were needed by July 7. 275,000 signatures were submitted that day, which is 120,000 more than needed. The Arizona Restaurant Association filed a lawsuit on July 15 on the grounds that they questioned the legitimacy of the qualifications of those getting signatures. Jared Bernstein, Economist at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said, “An increase is not a luxury or ‘beer money’ anymore. There are too many people who depend on a low wage job to meet their family budget that this increase is needed, not wanted.”
THE ARA FIGHTS BACK
In a later attempt, the ARA appealed to the Arizona Supreme Court, trying to overrule and remove the proposition from the ballet. That attempt had also failed to remove the proposition from the ballot. “I think that people might oppose [Proposition 206]

“The problem with minimum wage rising is it also means that prices of products will rise as well. If companies have to pay employees more than they need to raise the prices of the products to make money,” Day said. “It may not happen instantly, but I think that raising minimum wage really won’t change anything.”
GPCC RALLYING OPPOSITION
SUPPORTERS RAISE MONEY
Although the proposition has gathered support from multiple organizations, the major organization that is opposed to the passing of the prop is the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce (GPCC). GPCC Vice President Mike Huckins said, “In fact, this measure has the potential to eliminate more jobs than it would create. In addition, it does nothing to address local governments adopting a higher minimum wage above what this measure calls for, furthering the dangerous potential for a patchwork of wage and benefit policies across the state.” Some students also seem to think that raising the minimum wage would not help in the long run.
ARA FIGHTING BALLOT MEASURE
The opposition has raised no campaign cash, while the supporting organizations have raised 1,457,509 dollars as of August 29. No spending has been reported by the opposition, while according to Tuscon.com, the supporters have spent around $900,000 on paid circulators to place the issue on the ballot. Kevin Hassett, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute, said, “Lifting the minimum wage would result in job loss. A bunch of workers would get bigger checks while a bunch of workers would have to lose their jobs.” With the proposition remaining on the ballot, voters will decide if the minimum wage will be raised. Voting takes place on November 8.

For the first time in Arizona history, the traditionally red state could vote blue in the November election. Recent polls show tight races in the presidential and other key elections across the state.
The reasons for this change are up for debate. There is some evidence that comments made by Donald Trump and Sheriff Joe Arpaio on immigration have upset Hispanic voters, causing them to come out to vote in larger numbers than ever before. But whatever the reason, this would be a big change for a state that has historically been Republican. A swing state is where two major political parties have the same amount of support, and, as a result, draws a lot of attention from both parties during an election. Tim Sifert, the Arizona Republican Party spokesman is doubtful that the state will go blue. “The Democrats have done so poorly in Arizona over the last ten years it is only natural they would try to do something a little different,” said Sifert, according to an article by Nevada Public Radio. “And they are really going to have to step it up quite a bit.” Since 1952, Arizonans have consistently voted for the Republican presidential candidate, with the exception of Bill Clinton in 1996. To add to this apparent shift to blue, the Arizona Republic has endorsed Hillary Clinton. This is the first time that the paper has ever endorsed a Democrat during a major election. In an editorial announcing their choice, the editors said it was due to her “calm temperament and stance on equality.” “I believe that it is likely for Arizona to become a swing state this election, but only if Clinton is able to gather more support from Republicans and motivate Democrats to go out and vote for her, rather than staying at home,” said Alyssa Moraila, a senior. see SWING see State SWING on page State 2 on page 2

This shift towards Hillary Clinton could also be as simple as finances. “Arizona has been one of these states that national groups look at investing in and never quite get around to it,” said Andy Barr, a Democratic consultant for Saguaro Strategies, according to an article by KNPR. “The big difference this year the Clinton campaign has actually put money down.” In another key race, Democratic congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick is facing Republican incumbent Senator John McCain. Recent polls reported by Huffington Post show that McCain has a solid (10 point) lead, but Kirkpatrick is favored among Hispanic voters. “Whatever happens in Arizona in November, the state stands as a microcosm and test of this year’s cross-cutting political currents: the American Southwest and rising Latino vote; the divided Republican Party; and the demographic clash highlighted by Trump’s divisive campaign,” said Molly Ball, a reporter for the Atlantic. In a state where Republicans outnumber Democrats by five percent, this shift towards blue seems unusual, but actually there are other historically conservative states going through similar changes. The Enquirer, one of Ohio’s largest newspapers, has also endorsed Clinton after supporting Republicans for about a century. And some polls are showing that Iowa may also turn blue this election. The other closely watched race in this state is between Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Paul Penzone. While Arpaio has handily won every election he has faced as sheriff over the past 23 years, this year, for the first time, polls show a tight race. Recent polls conducted by Channel 12 news and the Arizona Republic show Penzone with a slight lead (48 per-
cent) over Arpaio (44 percent). According to Ball, “The activists are telling people to register and vote for one reason: to oppose Donald Trump and the Phoenix area’s controversial anti-immigrant sheriff, Joe Arpaio.” In a race as close as this one, the key to this election will likely be the undecided voters, as they can swing the state to one side or the other. “It’s been a solidly red state but both campaigns are actually making a play for it on the presidential level and they both acknowledge it shouldn’t be in play in a normal year,” said Ball. Evidence is proving this theory to be true. To garner more Democratic votes, the Latino community in Arizona is going door to door. Promise Arizona, a group lead by Petra Falcon, has registered more than 46,000 new voters this election. And Donald Trump has made Arizona an important part of his campaign, returning for a rally in Prescott on October 4. “A poll said that Donald [Trump] had a one percent gain on Hillary, so he was ahead by one percentage point, but there is a three percent error factor on the poll, so that could be plus or minus anything at this point,” said Jeffrey Carpenter, a government teacher. “I think we’re in a dead heat, actually.” Which side will be more successful at luring those undecided voters is unclear at this time. For those still needing to make a decision, there will be one more presidential debate on October 19. “Both candidates need to have a set plan that can easily be explained to the people who are still undecided,” said Devin Greene, a senior. The election is November 8. Also included on the ballot is the proposition to legalize marijuana and the proposition to raise the minimum wage to $12.

Arizona voters rejected a move to legalize recreational marijuana By Katelyn ReinhaRt g Features Editor
After months of campaigns, political ads, and emotionally fueled arguments during family dinners, the election has finally come to an end. The presidential torch has been passed down to the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, and many other issues were decided in Arizona: Proposition 205 to legalize marijuana did not pass, Proposition 206 to increase the minimum wage did pass. John McCain kept his senate seat. Sheriff Joe lost to Paul Penzone.
Presidential UPset
Winning the election with a total of 279 electoral votes, Trump has been declared the president of the United States. Beating his opponent, Hillary Clinton, by 51 electoral votes, this election results surprised many people. Despite the majority of polls and predictions being in Clinton’s favor, these beliefs proved to be false. “To be honest, I thought Hillary was going to win. First of all, she’s a woman. It would make sense for her to get more votes, especially because most of her policies tend to cater towards other women. Second, hating on Trump turned into the popular thing to do: nobody really wanted to vote for him. It was like a hit to your reputation if you supported Trump,” said Sydney Scudder, a junior. The elections started off extremely close, with murmurs of a recount scattered from broadcast to broadcast. However, with the win of Wisconsin and Florida, the Republican nominee took the election by storm. While Trump did win the electoral votes, he was practically tied with Clinton on popular vote, with 47 percent to Clinton’s 48 percent. While the votes varied from state to state, Arizona was particularly close, voting 45 percent in favor of Clinton and 50 percent for Trump. Arizona’s 11 electoral votes counted in Trump’s favor, giving more power to Republicans.
scandals in the camPaigns
As a whole, this election has been much different as opposed to previous ones. Because of the argumentative nature of the debates and the backlash from both candidates, many people were undecided in their vote until the last minute. There were scandals on both sides, such as Clinton’s emails and Trump’s comments regarding women and minorities. “In the end, Hillary was in trouble for her actions. Trump was in trouble for his words. I would rather vote for someone based on their actions then their words, and I think that, even though Donald Trump has said some really, really stupid things, he has a better record than Hillary,” said Gina Mure, a Cave Creek resident who voted for Trump in the election.

ELECTION RESULTS ArizonA Keeps senAtor
While the presidential debate was a popular topic, it was not the only election that took place. Incumbent Republican senator John McCain won against his opponent, Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick, in the battle for the Senate in Arizona. With 53 percent, McCain won out against Kirkpatrick, who received 41 percent. The Green Party’s candidate, Gary Swing, received only percent of the vote. In the race for sheriff between Paul Penzone and Joe Arpaio, Penzone won out against his opponent’s attempt at reelection. Arpaio had been made many controversial decisions in the past, costing Arizona thousands of dollars. “He’s definitely been a very expensive sheriff, so someone new could be a good thing. We’ll have to see,” said Mure.
propositions 50/50
Arizona also decided on Prop 205 and 206, which involve legalizing marijuana and raising the minimum wage. Prop 205 was declined, preventing marijuana from being used recreationally in Arizona. However, it was passed in California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada. The money generated was promised to go to school budgets, but with negative press on the

subject, this caused some distrust among voters. “I voted to approve it, but it is interesting to see how people with kids are voting. I think people are worried that their kids will get weed easier than they would if it were illegal. That’s a big concern,” said Mure. Prop 205 has been a popular discussion topic, and it has brought forth many pro’s and con’s. From a business standpoint, it would be more difficult to tell if a worker is impaired on the job because marijuana stays in the system longer than alcohol would, which would make drug testing less reliable. This would also be an issue with driving. Because of the high rates of drinking and driving, the concern about driving while impaired has caused many voters to scribble in the “no” bubble on their ballot. With no totally reliable way to see if someone is truly impaired while they have marijuana in their system, driving could become more dangerous and lead to less accountability. While Prop 205 was declined, Prop 206 passed, increasing the minimum wage in Arizona to $12 as of January 1st. This has received mixed reviews, with some celebrating and others fearing for their jobs.

18 hoCkey An overview of the new team and the upcoming season.

YBER bullying, the act of bullying another person
through the use of technology, has become a problem in our country that soon-to-be First Lady, Melania Trump has chosen to be her cause for the next four years. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, approximately half of all students have been bullied online, and the other half have participated in cyberbullying. The students that have participated or even seen cyberbullying on the internet often don’t even know who the bully is. “I knew people that were really nasty towards girls over social media and just seeing them being mean to people... my mom didn’t want that for me,” said Tayler Markland, a junior. Markland has abstained from all forms of social media due to the online bullying crisis. However, it is not exclusive to young people as seen on social media networks like Twitter and Facebook. Adults are fully capable to contributing to the cyberbullying problem as seen in the past couple of months due to the heated presidential election. Soon-to-be First Lady Melania Trump announced in November that her time in the White House will be dedicated to preventing cyber bullying in schools around the country. “Technology has changed our universe, but like anything that is powerful, it can have a bad side. Children and teenagers are fragile. They are hurt when they are made fun of or made to feel less in looks or intelligence,” said Melania Trump. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of her campaign. “It is never okay when a 12 year old boy or girl is mocked, bullied or attacked. It is terrible when that happens on the playground. And it is absolutely unacceptable when it is done by someone with no name hiding on the internet.” Trump also said she would campaign for women’s rights while in the White House. In previous interviews, she also talked about working with diseased children. However, her focus will be on cyberbullying. “I feel like Michelle Obama’s campaign was important, but I also feel like cyber bullying would

CYBER BULLYING be more effective because you could take more action, at least make more laws with it,” said Markman. Obama focused on nutrition for school childrenduring her time as First Lady. Some find it ironic, however, that Melania Trump is fighting cyberbullying when her own husband has been so involved in clashes on social media. Famous characters like Lady Gaga have publicly called Melania Trump’s cause hypocritical. However, the negative comments have not deterred her from making cyber bullying her main cause. According to the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), cyber bullying occurs most frequently between the ages of 15 and 16 and is most common in girls. In Arizona, cyber bullying is against the law and can lead to a fine or even time in prison depending on the degree of the crime. Cyberbullying is listed under assault, harassment and intimidation under Arizona law and schools across the states are required by law to enforce anti-bullying and cyberbullying acts on campus, on buses, or at any school events.

“When somebody is doing something, student to student, and it happens outside of school, it really isn’t the school’s business, or our authority,” said Steven Bebee, principal. “However, if what happens outside of school then comes onto campus and becomes a school issue, then it becomes our business.” At Cactus Shadows, cyber bullying is present, but not prominent. Nevertheless, Bebee stated that there would be more Wednesday advisory lessons coming that would focus heavily on cyber bullying. The decision to create these advisories was made because of the pressing issue of cyberbullying at Cactus Shadows. “[Cyber bullying] definitely makes the school separated, it makes girls more catty, and it makes them talk about each other more,” said Markman. According to nobully.com, 10 percent of all middle schoolers and high schoolers have been on the receiving end of cyber bullying, and nearly 80 percent of all teens use their cell phones constantly, which makes it more likely for problems to occur.

His greatest achievement is flipping a water bottle and having it land on the cap from ten feet away. “I was so proud,” said Thomas. “It was crazy.” After the Moon Valley football game, the Varsity football team also participated in this epidemic. “We probably left about eight water bottles on top of their lockers,” said Ian Jeffer, a senior. “My favorite place to flip them is in locker rooms and try to get [the bottle] perfectly in the center of an open locker,” said Jeffer. The trend is also a common reason that students get in trouble. “I think the teachers find it annoying,” said Zack Cambier, a sophomore. “We aren’t allowed to have any kind of bottles in Business Tech anymore because kids kept flipping water bottles and spilling them.” Although students are delighted
by this simple activity, adults view it as “obnoxious and distracting,” said Adam Rockenbaum, a Walmart employee. Stores like Walmart and Target have been experiencing many cases of teens trying this trend in their locations. “When [the kids] think we aren’t looking, they take the water bottles out of the cases and flip them. We have had to press charges before for destruction of property,” said Rockenbaum. Water bottle flipping can be enjoyed by adults, such as LeBron James, but adolescents are the main participants in the activity.

YouTube has recently introduced their new update YouTube Red. YouTube Red provides ad-free viewing, background playing, and the ability to save the videos for offline enjoyment. Alternatives to YouTube that offer similar services as YouTube Red at a cheaper price are DailyMotion, Vimeo, Vube, and MetaCafe. DailyMotion is the second largest video sharing platform next to YouTube. MotionMaker is similar to YouTube Red in that it allows individuals to remove size limit and length of the video. Since MotionMaker is free of charge, many people are mov4GooGle ing to this rather than YouTube Red.

As the years have gone by, the internet has provided us with critical information, boundless creativity, and most recently, the Mannequin Challenge. Set to the song Black Beetles, performed by Rae Sremmurd, the Mannequin Challenge is when a group of people remain petrified in a pose as the camera pans through the room. This trend started off with simple poses, but has elevated to people freezing in mid-flip as the music plays. Many people have caught on, with everyone from celebrities to school classrooms participating in this challenge. Questions have been raised about how long it will stay popular before people begin to lose interest.
