Being in yearbook is one of the most unique experiences because of the life skills that I continue to develop everyday in class. Unlike other subjects that have due dates and homework, we have deadlines and money is on the line. Personally I have been placed in a position this year where teamwork and leadership are key. There have been times that I rely completely on the skills and timeliness of our staff to take pjotos. Everything we do works like a system; I tell the staff what events we need covered and rely on them to get good phots for me, then I upload the photos and give them to the team leaders who tell me what else they need covered. For example, without the teamwork and actual production skill of someone like Julia, Mira may not have had a picture for her Rachel’s Challenge story. From the start of the year I learned so much about producion and leadership. Only a few months ago did I learn how to upload and create folders and have developed and am able to sort through photos more efficiently from lots of practice. As for being a leader among peers, I do not really find that challenging. I am already loud and my dedication to the production makes it so I am comfortable criticizing or giving orders. To continue, at the start of the year, Alyssa was having trouble taking pictures that go along with the rules and are not on an anlge. I had to mark her overall production score down but at the same time I gave her some tips and now she is a better photographer. However, toward the end of the year I took on a more designbased roll with two of the dividers, majority of the portrait pages, and some of the sports and club pages. I really improved my indesign skills and I got to work with some people I hadn’t had a chanace to earlier on. For example, Cassie was super busy with the teammates for sports pages so I placed all the lines. Also, Alysa and I did the portrait pages together. I will take all of these skills with me to the future, not only with being more timely on assignments, but also more dedicated to whatever I do because now I understand how much of a process even the smallest of things take. The teamwork, design, and leadership skills are all valuable assets I will take into being Editorin-Chief next year.
My most significant contribution to the yearbook last semester was the work that I put into the folders and making things like finding and uploading photos more efficient for everyone. My system of uploading and availability made it so every staff member is able to improve their skills. For example, at the start of the year I went through every single picture that each staff member took and we assesed together the pros and cons. I often put examples on the board and and even gave a presentation in an effort to make it so eveyone understands the basics for journalism photography. I think that my critiques and suggestions really helped the students because the skill level continues to grow with time and aquire more skills according to what they are taught. However overall, my most signigicant piece of work is the trendy interrupter. Many of the editors and team leaders had to crank out interrupters in order to complete the umbrella coverage and flow of the yearbook. I think that clothing is somthing that everyone is going to look back on and laugh in twenty years so I took this page seriously. All of the photography is from me and Christina. I personally brought in a bag of clothes and spent a week editing every photo to create a spread I thought the student body would enjoy. I really like how clean it turned out and am super proud.
reflection two The biggest challenge I faced in my first semester role would be disorganization. During homecoming week the classroom was hectic and I did my best to upload photos everyday to get the caemeras back out for the next team. With the newspaper photo editor next to me, SD cards were everywhere and if I was busy some team members would just put their SD cards on my desk for me to get to later. I managed to upload and organize all but one of the cards from that week and sadly it was the most important one from the dance. It was either misplaces or the pictures hot erased, but nevertheless, I could not find it anywhere. I feel l ike if I had a more organized physical system for turning in SD cards and keeping track of photos, rather than just a verbal exchange about the pictures. Thankfully there were other pictures of homecoming sent to us by students. Second semester, the biggest mistakes that I made were not having a text box or words on the art divider and not being more helpful to Cassie about the sports pages when I was trying to design them. I really like the art page but I feel like it is totally ruined because there is no words.
I am most proud of this picture because not only does it show emotion and is aesthetically pleasing but beacause of the story and what this photo means. The girl in this picture is Regan and she gave a speech on the ideas of feminism and dress code within our school and society. She is one of the smartest strongest people that I know and I wanted this picture to show how beautiful she really is. I think that the trees in the background frame her face and are simple enough to where this looks like a natural, unstaged scene. I decided not to use rule of thirds when taking this because I think that she is so powerful I wanted to make her the central focus of the photograph. I did take more pictures sescond semester for the trendy interrupter but I feel like there was none that described or captured somehting as impactful as she is.
four ction refle Apart from the basics of my job I was an asset to the staff first semester because I took the majority of the cutout pictures for our portrait pages and any other cutouts people may need for their mods. Also, I teamed with Mia to make sure she could access them easily and I helped her do some of the cutouts since she was new to the computer systems. I was consitstently available to the staff if they needed help finding photographs or wanted advice on the basics of picture taking. I was committed to this publication and willing to stay at school as late as possible for us to succeed. I came in multiple times after schoogether photos to show the staff or even just to ensure photos get to the proper team leaders on time. I understand the seriousness of everything that I do and think that that is one of the reasons this class is so special and why I am willing to do so much. Second semester, I felt similarly about my commitment and even stayed mcuh later to get pages done and fill out names for clubs that I was not even in charge of. I feel like even though there are still some mistakes, I helped to catch quite a few before we published the book and that my expansion into design helped lighten the load on other editors
reflection five a) I faced the issues of being new to the programs and having to adapt to the systems and speeds of the computer each day. I also had trouble with organization and misplacement of SD cards. Second semester we all faced deadline issues and I was really just getting used to indesign so that was difficult. b) With the help of Mr. Adamson and Korie I was able to learn how to upload and maneuver through bridge and create an organized system of folders. If I misplaced any cards I personally would figure out the problem with each team leader and make sure that if they could not find pictures in bridge, that we got pictures from other students or the newspaper folder. I learned a lot about organization and my role in the yearbook and am prepared to handle any situations that come up again. I also learned about overall staff organization and that we need a more specific schedule for next year to ensure fluidity with things like sports and senior ads. Also we took the edesign class so I think that will solve a lot of our issues. c) Overall, I would say I handled all situations calmy and only ever was frustrated with the speed of computers or misccomunication with staff members about SD cards. I tried my best to fix any mistakes I saw and to improve the appearance of some of the pages I co-designed
reflection six My greatest publication related weakness would be either time management or speaking up for my opinions. I know that I talk and am loud but I had a lot of ideas for this book regarding placement of sports schedules and line design that I should have said even if my suggestions werent used. Also I left many things to the last minute including this portfolio project. I feel like next year being Editor it will be easier to speak my mind and I will also have more time to follow through with ideas with my shortened schedule. Also, I think that half day and running the staff will make it easier to get more produced earlier by making schedules and having less classes so I can get more done earlier. I think it is just super important to have plans and lists on the important things so everything gets done with extra time to perfect it. Having two other Editors might also help me overcome the time management by keeping me and the rest of the staff on task.

Body art is a growing trend among students at cactus shadows as it becomes more accepted into society and within the workplace. One of our juniors, Ashley Kritzstein shares the inspiration for her tattoo that she got this past year in Tuscon. It is a peony on the underside of her right bicep. “i have always known that I wanted a tattoo and when I had even the slightest opportunity I grabed. I pull inspiration from all parts of my life and I was trying to choose either between a word or a flower. I knew the flower would be triky because there are so man different meanings to the different kinds so I tried to just choose one with no meaning just that I thought was pretty. For me, I have scars and have not the most beautiful things happen to me so i jus t wanted something beautiful.”

Friends of Ashley Kritzstein, a junior, give insight on her busy schedule
Depending on clubs and classes, every student can have a completely different schedule. Studemts are living completelty different lives while sitting right next to one another in the classroom. Here is an insight look on on eof those lives, Ashley kritzstein, a junior, from the perspective of two close friends and a sister that get a personal look at everyday in that that same crazy life. “Ashley first starts her day off by getting up at five in the morning to get ready for school. She gets so sidetracked with her makeup that she ends up coming to school late. She goes through her school day barely paying attention to any of her classes. She usually stays after until three making up class work that she missed. Then on her way home she stops at Dutch bros and get a coffee. She spends the rest of her evening playing with her dogs and hanging out with her friends. She takes a shower and starts her homework around twelve o’clock just before she needs to go to bed” said Kimberly Paoli, a junior. Her sister gets an even further look seeing that they live together. “Crawl about of bed and look in the mirror for a half hour. Then put make up on and run out the door. Then she makes weird jokes all day and have a good time. Sometimes she drinks Dutch, but she always laughs at what I say so I guess that is super cool,” said Emma Kritzstein, a semior. “I think snapchat is super cool and gives us something that we can laugh at now and in twenty years. Some of my favortite filters are the lobster sunglasses, rainbow mouth, and face swap. I guess these are just some pictures of my good friends being funny, the dog one I only put becasue I look so good.” Ashley Kritzstein, a jumior, said.
