short hair.

or centuries, it has been the same:

women have had long hair and men sported short hair. This social norm for hair changed around fifty years ago when the two genders decided to defy this hair rule by switching roles. Ladies started chopping all of their hair off and guys decided to grow out their hair. Although the short hair trend has been around for women for nearly half a century, the trend is just starting to make its way into the lives of teenage girls. “Short hair is so easy and it’s just really fresh and new and that’s what I like about it because I have had long hair for a while,” Dani Haboush, a senior, said. Cutting one’s hair can be a huge confidence booster because one will grow in it whether they intend to or not. Hair is often used as a blanket to hide behind, so if it is not there one will have no choice but to be bold. Girls have had the image in their heads that it is easy to feel confident with a head full of flowing hair because that is the image that is usually shown as beautiful, and many girls have recently come to the

conclusion that this statement is not necessarily true. “I felt more confident with my long hair, but I do like my short hair better,” Bailey Moya, a junior, said. Everyone likes getting a fresh new start, and getting a drastic hair cut can be just that. People nowadays are always talking about change and how desperate they are for it, especially high schoolers. Cutting one’s hair short is definitely a significant change in a girl’s life, and doing this will satisfy her need for change for a while. It also seems that a lot of people want to stand out with having short hair. Not having long hair like everyone else is one tactic that girls may use to seem less boring and unoriginal. “I feel like I have an actual style now, not just long and in my face all the time,” Tiffany Grigsby, front office assistant, said. It is almost a domino effect when a girl cuts her hair. When one girl does it, another girl wants to do it as well, because she thinks it is cute and refreshing. It is also not as intimidating to do it if one has the knowledge that another person has done it

Kickin’ the Bucket Hat Buckets are back. Yes, the 90s hip hop fashion trend has made it’s way back to wardrobes in recent years. Celebrity endorsements are the biggest reason for the revival, with Rihanna and Schoolboy Q, two of the world’s biggest hip hop superstars, constantly adding hats to the bucket list. Hip Hop culture goes hand in hand with the bucket trend, with many 90s hip hop superstars such as Aaliyah and LL Cool J wearing the bucket hats daily. “Honestly, it was the culture. I’m a part of this culture of bucket hats. You have people who partake in certain events such as rap concerts and hip hop heads like myself. I quite thoroughly enjoy the culture that comes along with it,” Joey Meshinsky, a senior, said. 6

A bucket hat is basically a hat with a round top, with a brim circling the entire bottom of the round top. Materials can range anywhere from cotton, silk, suede, and polyester. However, it isn’t just hip hop culture that is associated with bucket hats. Even celebrities such as Jack Nicholson and Reese Witherspoon have been spotted wearing them. With a diversity of customers comes a diversity in designs, with many ideas always being brought to the market. Designs can range anywhere from floral, paisley, solids,

as well. It would be the same if it were the other way around, too. If every girl had short hair, and one girl decided to grow it out, then other girls would follow, because it is the cool thing to do. Just like every other trend that has come and gone in the world, it had to start with one person. Having short hair can make people notice things about their face that they have never noticed before, because with hair like that, the face is almost always on display. This could cause some vulnerability, but after some getting used to, the feeling of discovering things about one’s looks that they never noticed could be strangely rewarding. Long hair can be high maintenance, and some girls were sick of putting up with it. With the busy life of a high schooler, people want as low maintenance as they can get, and short hair is usually low maintenance. “My showers are so much shorter now, and I don’t use as much shampoo and conditioner as I did with long hair,” Haboush said.

Wyatt Bush takes a look at this strange fashion fad and even elephant print. “I really like floral, solid colors are nice. I have quite a few bucket hats that are floral and solid colors,” Trey Nicholson, a senior, said. Even as fashionable as bucket hats are, they can still serve a purpose. People who typically work outdoors can be seen sporting a bucket hat to protect themselves from the sun, with many bucket hat ads actually including SPF in their labels. There are still people who would say that bucket hats are another ‘bandwagon’ fad. The term ‘bandwagon’ is often tied with any trend or idea that gains a heavy following. However, an avid bucket fan wouldn’t agree. “I think that bucket hats are very fashionable

and whoever wears them probably has a unique fashion sense,” Nicholson said. The hats are typically bought at stores such as Tilly’s, Dillard's, Zumiez, and also Amazon. Prices can range anywhere from 10 dollars to as much as 50 dollars depending on the brand. As with any trend, bucket hats are expected to also kick the bucket. “I think it will end very fast. People can only get so creative with what they can put them. People are only resetting that creative block. I will keep wearing though, my buckets are classics and a part of me,” Meshinsky said. Loyal fans will be loyal to their fashion sense and still rock the bucket hats. THE CACTUS SHADOWS PRESS

ALMOST AS GOOD AS CROCS Jacob EmnEtt discusses the newly trending shoes that German manufacturers have introduced to the US.

As the post-summer heat begins its assault on Arizona, students begin looking for appropriate, suitable footwear with which to outlast the weather. Flipflops and sandals are common sights, with brands such as Rainbow, Teva, and Reef featuring prominently. A mainstay, though lesser known brand of sandal is the Birkenstock, an originally foreign competitor made recently American through buyout. “It makes you feel the comfort of a ‘hippie in the heat’ without the searing pavement,” Michael Love, a senior, said. Birkenstock USA are best-known for their highly-priced clogs and sandals. Though originally manufactured in a German setting, and to function only as home-wear, Americans have made this footwear uniquely their own. In America, the Birkenstock is worn on all occasions, not just at home, and by the elderly and youthful alike. The Birkenstock is especially popular amongst the American college-student demographic, contrasting with the common ‘sandal-wearing elder’ stereotype that the public normally envisions. The Birkenstock serves as a sandal of a higher class, with the average price of a pair hovering around $100. It attempts to serve a purpose different than that of your average two-dollar bargain slipper, constructed of leather whilst containing ‘rolling contours’ that perfectly cushion the foot. Having made shoes for 230 years, the company feels that the quality and history of their shoe justifies the high cost, and if their survival over two centuries is anything to go by, they might be

right. Founded in 18th century Germany by Johann Birkenstock, the brand has gone through several ‘transformations’ before becoming what it is today. It had humble beginnings as a shoe-repair business run out of a small house in rural Germany, yet with multiple innovations by the Birkenstock family, it has established itself as a staple of modern footwear. The innovations began with Johann Birkenstock, the inventor, who created the first ‘Birkenstock’ sandal. The torch was then passed to his grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, who in the 20th century made the additions of a contoured insole and the first flexible arch support. His son, Karl, became the first of the Birkenstocks to develop a shoe solely from this arch support (made by his father), and is thus the father of the modern Birkenstock model we see today. “There are sandals, there are slip-ons with no back, and there are slip-ons with a back. Like a suede shoe.” Cotter Ewens, a senior and Birkenstock owner, said. Birkenstocks, though German, have enjoyed several periods of high popularity in America. Doctors and nurses wear the product, and it was oft associated with America’s liberal movements, especially the ‘flower child’ phase during 1967’s ‘Summer of Love’. Birkenstocks have recently fallen back into fashion, especially in younger crowds. Teens seem to enjoy the high quality of the product, and the comfort and history that follows it. This mimics a trend in the 1990s, when Birkenstocks began to gain popularity in the college atmosphere. In a world of things made shoddily and quickly, it is probably comforting to have a quality shoe one can count on.

Jumpsuits for joy alEx niEminEn jumps in her jumpsuit that she purchased from Forever 21.

PoPular in the 80’s, jumpsuits were brightly colored and a bit over the top. Now, all types of styles can be found such as strapless, printed, and flowy, and are becoming very common.

Jumpsuits were used on stage in the “Best Looks from New York” and in the “Best Looks from Paris” runaway line with brands such as Giambattista Valli, Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs back in 2013 and have since been showing up more frequently in stores as a major fashion comeback. These combined pant with shirt outfits work for any season which is important for women, an outfits ability to be worn year round can be cost effective. “It depends on the persons body type a lot but also on their personality, if you have more confidence than you can wear them better,” Allie O’Connor, senior, said. Their ability to be versatile is a contributing factor to the jumpsuits popularity. They can be dressed up by pairing them with gold accessories and a fashionable bag or dressed down with a casual pair of sandals and a sun hat. In summer, the pants in jumpsuits can be replaced with shorts, which would be called a romper. Or flowy ones help keep air circulation through the outfit so a person does not feel suffocated in the heat. Also sandals help with the laid back summer look. For winter, pants are a must to keep the legs warm. But, people can add basically any accessory to help keep warm as well. If the jumpsuit is a fashion statement all on its own, then wear pale scarves and jackets. If the jumpsuit is just a plain color with no point of interest, then use the scarves and or jacket as the fashion statement. Boots can be a possibility as long as it does not make the outfit look too stumpy. In fall, the jumpsuit can work all on its own and on those chilly days a nice cardigan can be paired. Fall colors such as burgundy, pale orange, brown, and black are good color options when deciding on a jumpsuit. Spring jumpsuits can range from the ones with pants to shorts. This time has the most freedom because the temperature usually is not too hot nor too cold. Casual jewelry for the daytime such as stud earrings and calm chain necklaces work and for night a masterpiece of a necklace or earrings can work great with a solid color jumpsuit. “I feel like jumpsuits are coming back because they are so different” Ashlyn Lowry, a senior, said, “everyone is trying to be like hipster and trendy and I think that is what is so appealing about them right now.” There are a few universal rules that go along with wearing a jumpsuit. A do would be to pair it with a jacket to make it look more subtle. The jacket should be a similar color to the jumpsuit or on the same color palette. Also wearing an all black jumpsuit, even though hot in the summer, is an easy way for a slimming look. Try to avoid wearing a jumpsuit that is like a second skin. Flowy jumpsuits are easier to find to match a body type while skin tight ones show off every flaw. Another is to avoid wearing bold jewelry with a bold print.

Model Behavior

B

by WADE JOHNSON Creeker Editor

ORN and raised in small town Pinetop, junior Mia

Kerr is now a prospering model with business in Arizona, as well as primarily in Los Angeles, California. "It was kind of luck I guess, I was born and raised in Pinetop, and I was actually just visiting California and I got scouted at a mall," Kerr said. A lady who was part of a modeling agency approached her due to her height and lean stature. Kerr was told to come to their agency for interviews and test shoots. At that time Kerr did not live in California and it was going to be hard for her to take up the modeling job. Instead it was passed up at the time and left for another visit. However, a couple months later Kerr moved out to California with her mother. Test shoots were set up for Kerr and she was eventually contracted with the agency. The agency helps her create a book from shoots for businesses looking to hire a model. Kerr has a team working on her behalf to aid her in getting shoots. “There's a team of agents. I have one and she's in charge of beauty and test shoots and I have another that's in charge of big companies like Macys,” Kerr said. Kerr also has a main agent, Yonta, that helps in terms of personal purposes. Yonta is the agent that Kerr can call and talk to about anything. As well, Kerr sends her food diaries and Yonta provides health and fitness advice. Some students may recognize Kerr from the music video “Versace” by rapper Mingo. She is dressed from head to toe in lavish clothes and takes on a stylish role. Kerr was merely fourteen in this music video, as opposed to the other older woman in the video. “It has taken much patience and discipline to keep school and her career going,” Ana Kerr, Mia’s mother, said. As many shoots that Kerr has been involved in, the best ones seemed to be the least anticipated ones. "I had this big family weekend and I had this test shoot and I really didn't want to go, and there was me and six other models. The theme of the photo shoot was cool rock and roll,” Kerr said. With her mother living in California, Kerr will be moving back as well to pursue her modeling career. She will be living with her sister in Los Angeles to be closer to the jobs she gets offered. The high school in Long Beach offers an independent study in which Kerr will do so she will have a more flexible schedule. While Kerr recognizes that modeling is not something someone can do their whole life, it offers experience and for her to have the potential to travel more.

MIA KERR has a variety of head shots she uses to promote herself in the modeling world. “I have different managers for different things, but most of them control what fashion shoots i go to and they are in charge of setting them up,” Kerr said.

3,2,1.. SHOOT! STRIKE A POSE NICOLE DUSANEK teaches students the “Do’s and Don’ts” of senior pictures

Seniors commemorate the four years they spent in high school by getting their photos done, one of which goes in the yearbook. To make these pictures perfect, seniors should keep in mind:

DO:

BRING a change of clothes. You never know what style you are going to like, even if the place taking your photos has a limit, bring extra. You might decide you want to wear something different, or maybe you will have extra time and the photographer will let you throw on an extra outfit. BE cautious of color. Make sure you are aware of what the background color is, and be careful what you wear, you do not want to clash with the background. LISTEN to the photographer. They know what they are doing, if they tell you to put your chin down, put

6

your chin down, if they tell you to look left or towards the light, do it. The photographer is seeing you through the camera, they know how you look best. WEAR longer sleeves for some photos. It makes the arms seem slimmer, and will look elegant in some photos. HAVE FUN This should not be a difficult time, it should be enjoyable. Talk with the photographer even if you do not know them. Relax, and make these the best photos as possible.

DON'T:

STRESS about the timing, an hour or an hour and a half is longer than you think. If you get three changes of clothes and one hour, that gives you 20 minutes with each outfit. While it might not sound like much, you will get plenty of photos taken.

GO overboard. You still want to look like yourself, so do not put on too much makeup. Be recognizable and be you. DRESS differently than usual. If you never wear dresses, you do not have to wear one for your photos. Wear jeans, or sports jerseys, wear what you usually wear or something that describes you. When you look back, you want to remember what you were like, not what you looked like for an hour. SCHEDULE your viewing weeks after the pictures are taken. After you take your photos, you are going to be excited to see them. Make sure you can look them over as soon as possible, so that you have time to choose which photos you like best. BE NERVOUS. In your photos, you want to look relaxed, and if you are nervous you will look stiff and uncomfortable in your photos.

“THESE PANTS ARE SO TIGHT,” moaned Justin Zeigler, junior, through the dressing room door. He was experiencing, for perhaps the first time, the eternal plight of the well-dressed, twenty-first century man: excessively tight jeans. Moments earlier, Zeigler walked through the crowded aisles of the Scottsdale Quarter H&M. Occasionally stopping to flick through the hangers which line the walls, Zeigler wore an expression of one reading a lengthy novel on the history of socks. This is not a man who enjoys shopping. Though he does, it would seem, enjoy a challenge. At the request of this paper, Zeigler agreed to redesign his image. “I figured I could use some help in the fashion area,” Zeigler admitted.

With the help of one hundred dollars and CS Press fashion editor, Grace Rowett, Zeigler did just that: eventually swallowing his pride entirely by wearing uncomfortably short, pink shorts, with a matching pink tank top. “It’s beachwear,” Rowett assured him. Pink beachwear aside, the rest of the outfits were chosen with casual, every day style in mind. These outfits included a dress shirt and sweater, layered with a tan jacket over it; a white, wool sweater with plaid scarf, and another wool sweater, this time accented with a mustard beanie. He candidly confessed his opinion of the wool: “I’m just letting you know that this is disgusting and I never want to wear it again.” Skinny jeans made a cameo appearance, and eventually found their way home with Zeigler. By the end of the night, he ended up with the skinny pants and several other articles of clothing, including his infamous beachwear, in an H&M bag: swaying by his hip above the Quarter’s sidewalk.

Brow Beaters by BIANCA DYDYK Staff Writer

Eyebrows have become all the rage; whether it is styling, or filling them in. Brushes help shape eyebrows, especially if someone has a unique look they are going for. For example, someone with extra-thin eyebrows is going to need a small brush with a defined tip. Another method to enhance eyebrows is by amplifying them with a pencil or eyebrow shadowing. Pencils and shadow add color where there is missing or too light of hair. “On special occasions if I am trying to go for a really dark look I will pencil them in a little bit,” Mackenzie O’Hearn, a senior said. When buying makeup for eyebrows, try and go one or two shades lighter than one’s hair color. This avoids unintentionally making one’s eyebrows too dark for their complexion. “A lot of girls go really hard with the pencil or powder and they make them too dark. It needs to match your hair color.,” O’Hearn said. Another option is to dye the eyebrows and avoid makeup altogether. “It won’t dye the skin, and it won’t hurt the eyebrows in any way,” Dannie Pipitone, alumni and student at Penrose Academy said. Plucking and waxing are also popular options people turn to in order to achieve their ideal eyebrows. “I pluck them. I have never gotten them waxed, but I think about it,” Parker Long, a senior said. The end result for one’s eyebrows should still resemble how they looked before. If a natural blonde originally had light curved eyebrows, she should not end up with straight dark eyebrows after fixing them up. Eyebrows frame the face, and care for them is meant to enhance the beauty that is already there, not alter it. “I don’t think people should try and change their eyebrows too much. It looks weird. Just clean them up a little bit, go with what you're born with, and don’t try to fight the shape of your eyebrows. Just work with them,” O’hearn said.

BOOTED UP. Both ankle boots and tall boots are versatile for al types of fall outfits. One can find boots like this at big stores such as Target, or even small thrift shops. 4 GRACE ROWETT

Short boots, tall boots, red boots, fall boots LINDSEY MURPHY goes into the world of boots to explain how different heights of boots work with various styles of clothing and outfits. As the seasons change and it gets cooler out, many people exchange their summery sandals for boots. The two most popular styles of boots are high boots, and ankle boots. High boots are also referred to as riding boots. These boots generally come up to or over the knee, and they can be either lace up or zip up. There is more of a variation in ankle boots than there are with high boots. Ankle boots can stop anywhere from one to four inches above the ankle. Ankle boots usually have a higher heel than high boots. Ankle boots are a very diverse shoe and can be paired with many types

of clothing. “Lately I’ve been liking my ankle boots. I wear them with leggings or a dress,” Sydney Ferry, a junior, said. There are different ways to wear both kinds of boots. Some ways to wear high boots could be with jeans or leggings, but some people also like to pair them with flowy dresses and cardigans. “Mostly I wear them with pencil skirts or leggings,” Jill Jellison, an English teacher who prefers high boots said. Ankle boots are popular with cuffed jeans, or a skirt and tights. Many people also wear ankle boots with shorter dresses.

“They are so comfortable and make you look put together,” Amy Claire Abel, a junior, said about both styles of boots. Generally people begin wearing boots around the Fall months of October or November. “I’m going to start wearing my boots this month, around November. Even if it is eighty degrees I’m going to start wearing them,” Jellison said. Ankle boots and high boots are not extremely difficult to find, and they can be found for a good price. “A place that has great prices and great selection is Buffalo Exchange downtown.” Jellison said. One of the most com-

mon places which people say they find boots is at Nordstrom Rack, a store mentioned by both Abel and Jellison. “I buy boots wherever I can find nice ones that are not too expensive. I find that DSW and Nordstrom Rack have some of the best,” Abel said. Ferry prefers to purchase her boots from Urban Outfitters, which has a fairly large selection of boots to choose from. Both high and ankle boots are a large Fall trend. They are easy to find, match well with many different kinds of outfits, and can be purchased at a relatively low cost.

Phan created Ipsy so that her team of specialists could select products that were matched to their likes and needs for them to try. “I would love to try this website subscription because it is extremely cheap and really worth it,” Kameren Wilburn, a senior, said. types of glue are also made available to benefit any skin allergies one may acquire. “All the lashes are black which are usually what most people want anyways. It depends on who is doing your eyelashes, but most of the time you can ask for exactly what you want and get just that” Rosenthal said. When having a full set of eyelash extensions done at the salon, one should expect to be sitting still for a long period of time. The extensions are not the same as false eyelashes that are glued on as a whole strip. They are put on one single lash at a time and based on the look someone is going for, extra lashes

“I love the surprise factor and the ability to try new products every month,” Alison Anderson, a community member, parent, and Ipsy user, said.

The website is considered a community and when the subscriber receives their Glam Bag, they are able to go onto the webpage and comment on each item that they received and rate it depending on how they like it. If they receive an item that they did not care for then they can leave a bad rating and then Ipsy wont sent them any more items like that. Giving feedback is the main key to receiving item that the subscriber is most pleased with. If they are not pleased with it and see that someone else has an item that the other person wants, they are able to communicate and then they can trade by sending it through the mail. When one rates an item, they receive Ipsy points. These points are received through sharing on Facebook, other media sites, buying full-size products after testing them and using their promotion codes and also referring the website to other people. Touch-ups on the lashes are recommended to take place every three to four weeks. Pricing for the lashes can also be decreased greatly if management of them is followed accordingly. “Its similar to getting your nails done, if you want them to stay looking nice you need to keep up with them,” Rosenthal said.

The starting price for eyelash extensions can be as high as $120, however Heidi’s boutique located on North Hayden Road and Scottsdale is willing to do it for a lot cheaper. Their original pricing for eyelash extensions is $80 and fill ins range from $40-$45 depending on how long one waited to get them fixed up. “I think its a really cool idea, but its pretty expensive,” Reagan Heslop, a senior said. Returning customers also have the opportunity to have the starting price dropped to $65 if they prove to be consistent with managing their eyelashes. THE CACTUS SHADOWS PRESS

STYLE

At the Drop of a Hat SIERRA GALINDO goes through the different trendy styles of hats that can add to any outfit for the winter and are easily paired with multiple outfits.

C

OLD-WEATHER hats have evolved beyond the classic beanie, and these newly recognized accessories are quickly joining the mix of the typical winter wear such as scarves, jackets, and

boots. Although beanies and fur hats are a usual popular choice for head wear in the winter, fedoras, wide brimmed hats, and floppy hats have become more popular recently. Seen being paired with many outfits such as flirty dresses, vests, and tights, or skinny jeans and oversized cowl neck sweaters, these hats are a versatile statement piece that will be seen being worn by people of all ages throughout the winter months. “I think they [hats] are a great fashion choice,” Evelyn Bencomo, a junior, said, “They look good with practically any outfit, even on crazy hair day, they help hide the craziness of your hair.” Fedora hats best suit heart-shaped faces and girls can add this hat to her particular outfit to give the look an occasional playful twist. The most common way to wear a fedora for women is casually. A popular outfit would be to pair this hat with a long tunic and black leggings, a jacket,

and an oversized scarf. For men, a fedora is best styled with a trench coat or long coat along with a nice dress shirt and dark jeans. According to Fashionbeans, a fedora will best suit men with shorter face shapes since the tapered crown of the hat gives the illusion of length.

“Even though fedoras are really cool, I just prefer to wear beanies, they keep my head warm,” Elaina Rovenstine, a junior, said. Wide brimmed hats are fashioned similar to fedoras, best worn with a simple dress, and the addition of a long jacket or fur coat works nicely. A hat similar to a wide brimmed hat would be the “pork pie,” the type of hat Walter White wears in Breaking Bad. Fashionbeans states that a pork pie looks best casual clothes and is suited well to men with shorter faces. These hats are more popular among men, but some women have taken fancy to this style of hat as well. Floppy hats are usually worn in the spring and summer, but have recently transitioned to fall and winter fashions. Lovelyish said that a good outfit to pair with a floppy fat would be skinny jeans and a thick, wool-knitted top or jeans and a basic top with knitted cardigan.

It is fuzzy, it is warm and it feels so rocker glam, it is this fall’s biggest trend – the “faux” fur vest. One can slip on a gray faux fur vest and witness how it can turn a simple shirt and an ordinary pair of blue jeans into a fun, unique look that works for any occasion. “Fur vests are an absolutely fabulous statement piece that can make any outfit look trendy and stylish. I adore the way some people style them,” Zack Mattocks, a senior, said. This vest is a good layering piece, and it is also a nice statement item that will catch the attention of others without making one look overthe-top. "I think they are really unique and can liven up a lot of boring outfits," Sarah Nelson, a sophomore, said. While it may seem that fur vests are limited and only go with a few select items, they are surprisingly versatile, able to coordinate with almost any outfit that one may choose to wear. “I n terms of fur, it is a little sad that an animal has to be killed for it, but the vests can look cute on just the right person,” Cameron Bender, a math teacher, said. A fur vest can be paired with a midi skirt and a floppy hat for a boho look, monochromatic pieces for an elegant and classic look, leather pants for an edgy look, or a chunky sweater or a flannel and leggings for a casual weekend look. Since they are so "on-trend," these vests can be found pretty much anywhere. From stores like Forever 21 where vests are priced anywhere between $25 to $40 to higher end department stores like Nordstrom where people can find vests in the pricier range of $80 to $100, but one will not be able to walk in without spotting a fur vest. 7

REFLECTIONS

Self-Analytical Evaluation

One thing I have learned this year is that the mentality of a writer and the mentality of an editor are on two complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Writers do not understand how important it is to get all of their work done on time because they are not the ones who have to deal with everything. When I was a writer my first year and even last year, I did not fully understand all of the pressures that editors were under because I was not in their situation, obviously. If one thing is off, it throws off the entire production schedule for my page. Even if I have 95% of all of the stuff that needs to go on my page, that 5% that is not done will mess the whole process up. Transitioning from a writer to an editor is a little overwhelming just because you get so used to a specific way of working for so long, and then all of a sudden you have so many other responsibilities. You definitely have to be more on top of things as an editor. The difficult thing about this is you can not only be on top of your things, you also have to be on top of every one else who is writing for your page and make sure how they are coming along with their articles and photos. For example, for the December issue I was writing around 1600 words, which is more than an editor should be writing. While I was dealing with getting those done, I also had to help one of my other writers Bianca because she was not sure what I wanted for the article she was writing. While it was a lot to deal with, it did help me to multitask. Overall, being an editor so far has actually helped me realize the importance of deadlines and how if you miss one deadline, how much it can mess an entire production schedule up. Taking on the leadership role

that an editor needs to face was a little overwhelming at first, but it did not take a long time to get the hang of. The one reason why it was difficult was because I was so used to be told what to do for two years and then all of a sudden I was the one telling people what to do. Although I felt a little uncomfortable doing it at first, it did not take long to establish my role as a leader. Teamwork has been a big thing for me this year. You are kind of on your own as a writer, unless you have a question for the editor or the teacher. Editors are different because they all understand how stressful it can be. During production day, I have noticed how much all the editors can help each other out, even if it is just with little things like coming up with headlines and captions. Wade and I always help each other out with captions and give our opinions on whether we like a specific font or placement. Even though it does not seem like much, even the littlest bit of encouragement or help from a fellow editor can be a huge help. I am much more dedicated to the paper this year than I was last year. Since I am now an editor, that is clearly a given. Being an editor has given me a whole new appreciation for the newspaper because I get to experience first hand all of the hard work that goes into it. Overall, this year so far has opened my eyes to all of the things in the paper that I did not see before and it makes me grateful that I get to be apart of something that students put their heart and soul into. Being one of those students, it makes it exciting to be a part of something so prestigious and knowing you are one of the people behind actually putting it together. That fact has been going through my mind all year and that is what motivates me to do the best I can with the style page and making sure my articles are exactly how I want them.

Reflection 1 Out of all the articles I have written so far this semester, I could not find one that really stood out to me. I was not too fond of any of them but I did not dislike any of them either, they were just neutral articles that I did not feel strongly enough to write about. One thing that stuck out to me, though, was an article on my page written by John Tracy. Although I did not write the article, I was incorporated in it. The article was called “Grace’s Eye for the Straight Guy”. This was a spin off on the old TV show called “queer Eye for the Straight Guy”. At first we were going to use the original title of the TV show, but then we realized that a.) it was on the verge of being too inappropriate for the school and b.) we could not copy someone else’s idea, so we changed the words around and made it Grace’s Eye for the Straight Guy instead. The reason we changed

it to Grace’s Eye for the Straight Guy is because John Tracy, Justin Zeigler and I all went to H&M so I could make Justin over. Justin was the only guy we asked who was willing to be made over without being offended about it. The goal was to pick an average guy with boring style and make him over and make him stylish, for the most part. I was the one picking out the outfits that Justin would wear for the pictures, and John was tagging along so he could write an article on the overall experience. What I liked about this article was it was unlike anything we have ever done for the style page before. I am not a fan of repeating things that I know have already been done before, it feels good to be different, and that is why this article is so important to me. Over the past few years I have seen trends on the style page such as “Back to School Styles” and “Fall

Trends” so it was refreshing to have a piece on my page that really stuck out. Since it was an article directed towards guys, that also made it more interesting. Since there are rarely any articles that relate to guys on the style page, having this article was unexpected and fun. Another reason why I have such a strong feeling towards the article is because what I did to contribute to it is something I have a passion for. I have loved clothes since I was a toddler and for years I have always had dreams of going up to random people and asking to give them makeovers. It is not only a rewarding experience for them to look better than they did before, but for you as well because you know you helped that person gain the confidence they lacked before.

Reflection 2 I have looked through all of the articles I have written this year, and to be honest, they could probably all use some work. Writing is my best subject so I am obviously harder on myself when it comes to my written pieces. Even if the article is perfectly fine according to journalism standards, I will still think that there is something else I could have done, even if I do not know what that thing is. For example, with my Con article on Administration Interference, I had good points and I think I did a good job of getting my points and arguments across, but there could have been some other things I could have added to make my argument stronger. A have a pattern with the opinion articles that I write where I am really excited about them when I sign up for them, and I think I can do an awesome job on them, but when I actually start writing the article, I have a really hard time with getting all of my thoughts on paper. Either that or all of the thoughts I have when I sign up for the article, I forget about when it comes time to actually write the article. I am not super disappointed with this article, it is just average to me, and I do not think opinion articles should be average. Opinion articles should bring out some type of emotion in people, and this one that I wrote definitely did not. I could probably write about how all of my other articles need work, but for the since this is only supposed to be focused on one article, I will suppress the urge. My “opponent, or the person who wrote the Pro article, was Rachel Webb. I read both of our articles one after another and I honestly think my article had more valid arguments. I can not tell if it was because the side I was fighting made more sense or if my actual article just had a lot of strong points. Again, I do not think this was a terrible article, there was just something missing. The main problem with the Pro/Con articles is the word count is very restricted. With other articles the editors are a little more lenient because it is not being compared to an opposing party. Since the article has to be 500 words or less, it kind of limits the things I am able to say and I think that is part of the reason why Pro/Con articles are not my strong suit.

Reflection 3 I do not take pictures for the newspaper. I enjoy taking pictures but unfortunately I am not gifted with photography skills so I avoid taking pictures at all costs. The one picture I did take for the newspaper this semester was for the November issue on my page. The article was called “Short boots, tall boots, red boots, fall boots. It was written by Lindsey Murphy and the I took a picture of, you guessed it, boots. The concept was pretty cute because I had three girls (Hollis Johnson, Wade Johnson, and Shelby Nichols) sit on a bench and sit in different positions. The ending result was three pairs of legs sporting three different pairs of boots and each of the pair of legs was doing something different. it was not a horrible photo, but it definitely was not something a person would look twice at.

Reflection 4 Since this is my first year being an editor for the newspaper and I have been on the staff for three years, I would say this year I have been a bigger asset than the other two years. The other years I was just a writer so I could not be a huge asset, because other than my articles, I was not a help in the production of the newspaper. Obviously without the articles the newspaper would not exist, but I just feel like I am a bigger asset this year because on top of writing my articles, I am also putting an entire page together for the paper. So in that way, I think I have been a bigger asset this year. I also have been taking some new writers who are writing for my page and making sure they know what they are doing and letting them know if they need help they can talk to me. I enjoy helping them because I know when I was a new writer I could have used a little more help with my articles, but no one was really open or friendly about it. i try my best to be encouraging and help as most as I can so they are ensured to have a flawless article, or as close to flawless as possible. I have not done anything this year that really sticks out to me that would qualify me to be a huge asset of the staff, but I do what I can and I help people if they need help. I would not say I go above and beyond to do everything I can for the paper like some people on the staff, but I do what I feel is necessary for me to do considering my place and all of the other things I need to worry about.

Reflection 5 The number one problem I faced this year was InDesign, hands down. I was never taught how to use InDesign, and I feel like everyone kind of just expected the new, inexperienced editors to know everything they were doing. This assumption was completely false and the fact that I have been struggling through getting my pages done due to lack of knowledge has easily been one of the most aggravating things I have had to deal with this year. Along with my pages, I also had to do this portfolio on InDesign which was even more stressful because I could not do it at home and I barely had any time to do it at all. Considering my lack of experience, it should take me twice the amount of time as the other editors to get mine done, but under the circumstances, I had to get it done in the same amount of time. InDesign has been the leading cause of many mental breakdowns, and even though I have been slowly learning throughout the months how to use it, it still is the most confusing thing to me. I try to ask for help from Mr. Adamson and other editors, but everyone is so busy all the time that I either have to wait twenty minutes or try to figure it out on my own. I am not saying trying to figure it out for myself is a bad thing, it would just be useful if someone taught me how to use it the year prior to this so I did not have this problem in the first place. It is inefficient not knowing how to use something that is such a large contributor to the paper, and it just gets very stressful sometimes.

Is it time for your hair to be

F

Hip Hop culture goes hand in hand with the bucket trend, with many 90s hip hop superstars such as Aaliyah and LL Cool J

A bucket hat is basically a hat with a round top, with a brim circling the entire bottom of the round top. Materials can range anywhere from cotton, silk, suede, and polyester. However, it isn’t just hip hop culture that

People who typically work outdoors can be seen sporting a bucket hat to protect themselves from

and whoever wears them probably has a unique fashion sense,” Nicholson said. The hats are typically bought at stores such as Tilly’s, Dillard's, Zumiez, and also Amazon. Prices can range anywhere from 10 dollars to as much as 50 dollars depending on the brand. As with any trend, bucket hats are expected to also kick the bucket. “I think it

While most brothers throw around a football, Dean and Sam Winchester, portrayed by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, cruise the United States in their pitch black 1967 Impala, taking on their father’s legacy of hunting demons, ghosts, and everything else that goes bump in the night. SUPERNATURAL, written by Eric Kripke, first premiered on September 13, 2005 on WB, but joined CW a year later. The show skyrocketed with popularity as people from all over tuned in to see what obstacle the Winchester brothers would have to overcome next. Almost ten years later, it is still rolling with thousands of fans waiting for the tenth season Premiere releasing in October. Supernatural has been nominated for over 53 awards, taking 15 home. It is one of the longest running programs on television. Standing at 6'1’’, Dean Winchester still manages to get himself into loads of trouble. His quirkiness charms almost every lady he meets, and his devotion to his family is hard to miss. While his lean body seems immaculate, Dean can always be seen stuffing his face with food. His rugged personality keeps him at an arms length with relationships, except for his one true love, the 1967 Impala. Sam Winchester, although younger, stands at 6'4’’. Known to be the brains of the operation, Sam is the brother with his own voice. If there is something he disagrees with, the audience will know it immediately. His calm composure keeps most the fighting at bay and like his brother, his loyalties lie deep within the family and he would do anything to keep Dean safe. The show started with the mysterious death of Sam and Dean’s mother. Their father, John Winchester, sought to find the supernatural being that killed her, and destroy it. Dean was four years old and Sam was only a couple months old when the tragedy struck the family. From then on the Winchester boys were trained to kill. Somewhere through the years, Sam, the youngest brother, decided instead of hunting he wanted to get an education, and therefore ‘left’ the family business concluding with a falling out with their father. Years later Dean approaches Sam at Stanford University, studying to be a lawyer, and tells him the unfortunate news of their missing father. From then on the series takes on new adventures as they follow the signs of supernatural phenomenons and defeating the evil beings that cross their paths. Ackles and Padalecki’s personalities run through their characters leading the show to not only be suspenseful and enthralling, but also humorous. The chemistry between the two is so real, the audience with believe that they are actually brothers. ~CHRISTINA DRAGONE

SO FOUR FRIENDS WALK INTO A BAR

A shining star in Fox’s bland, Foxesque lineup, the comedy NEW GIRL breaks television’s mold with fresh comedy and a strong, independent female lead. The show revolves around Jess, a quirky school teacher played by Zooey Deschanel, and her three male roommates: Schmidt, Nick, and Winston. Nick, played by Jake Johnson, is a sarcastic, and indecisive law school dropout, limping along in life as a career bartender. Your traditional everyman, and a little besides, Nick skimps along with little money and no class bringing him into conSEPTEMBER 19, 2014

flict with his obnoxious flatmate Schmidt. Schmidt, the “lovable douche-bag” played by Max Greenfield, is a man with fine taste in food, women, shoes, and body butter. Quirky, and owner of both driving moccasins and hair chutney, whatever that is, the hair-trigger Schmidt lives in two complexes, one of apartments, and one of superiority. Similar to Neil Patrick Harris’ ‘Barney’ in the show How I Met Your Mother, Schmidt has been considered a ‘breakout character’ and Greenfield’s performance has been nominated for six awards. Lamorne Morris plays Winston, the final roommate. In the first episode Jess catches her boyfriend under the sheets with another woman, leading her to break up with him and move out of his house. Having been a dependent for so long, and desperately needing a place to stay, she meets Nick, Schmidt, and Winston through a Craigslist ad, and makes up her mind to room with them. Jess moves in with the gang and continues to shake up their lives in subsequent seasons. Jess is an odd bird, with many interesting fascinations and quirks, yet her unique sensibilities are just what the doctor ordered. In breaking her roommates out of their individual ruts, she leads the audience on a funny, whimsical, and ultimately heartfelt journey. As the seasons progress, Jess and her story lines begin to take a backseat as Nick, Schmidt, and Winston begin to develop as characters, and this is anything but a negative. While Jess is technically the show’s main character, it’s in the interactions~between her and others that the funny JACOB EMNETT lies.

POPPIN’ PILLS AND STOPPIN’ KILLS

Grab a few canes, girders, crutches, and pylons, because you will definitely need a support group after this show.

HOUSE, M.D. is unique, toeing the line between drama and comedy, life and death. Led by showrunner David Shore, the show revolves around Dr. Gregory House, played by Hugh Laurie, a pill-popping medical genius whose sharpness of mind is rivaled only by his quickness of wit. Documenting his days at PrincetonPlainsboro, a New Jersey teaching hospital, the show leans away from traditional medical melodrama and towards in-depth character study, documenting House’s precipitous mental journey as cases, patients, and fellows challenge his nihilistic, misanthropic worldview. This show is no puff-piece, but it’ll reward you for time and trouble taken. House’s life is not a pleasant one, but investment in his struggle will make the eventual redemption all the more poignant. The sweetest fruits swing from the highest branches. Rest assured, however, the series is not all doom and gloom. Assisted by a talented supporting cast (featuring Robert Sean Leonard as Dr. James Wilson, the Watson to House’s Sherlock, and Lisa Edelstein as Dean of Medicine Lisa Cuddy, his Irene Adler), running jokes and character-driven comedy abound, a trait of the series’ characteristically strong writing. While House’s world-weary attitude can wear, it can be humorous when juxtaposed against that of his oft-optimistic staff. Backed by formidable intellect, House often places his fellows at loggerheads, predicting responses and reactions

to his questions before they have decided to answer. Though comedic, these dilemmas often fail to resolve themselves by the episode’s end, dangling a moral quandary before the viewer, and before the characters. House, M.D. revitalized the hum-drum medical melodrama, having garnered praise in it’s eight-year run. Iconoclastic, it, with it’s masterpiece Greg House, paved the way for critically acclaimed anti-heroes such as Breaking Bad’s Walter White, Mad Men’s Donald Draper, and House of Cards’ Frank Underwood. House, M.D. was not perfect, but it was something incredible. Something new. A few years before its arrived at the fore~time, JACOB it EMNETT front of the silver screen’s revitalization. If you are sick of formulaic reality, House, M.D. has the cure.

YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME

Based on the fiery young-adult book series by Cecily von Ziegesar, CW’s GOSSIP GIRL began by channeling the escapades of famously privileged Manhattan adolescents. This series long exhausted the original plan. While the novels ended with the teens going off to different colleges, the show went far beyond that (although I am not complaining) by following them there and documenting their blossoming “maturity”. Gossip Girl has never been a ratings winner, and with each season the number of people watching it shrunk. But the show’s influence has far outshined its ratings. It has been nominated by The CW as the number one show for girls from the ages 18-34 to watch. For three years straight, the Teen Choice Awards nominated it for television’s Best Drama. There are quite a few main characters that are a part of this show, but the ones that captured my interest the most were

Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, and Chuck Bass. Serena and Blair are relentless frenemies, and even though they have been best friends since time began, there has always been a looming sense of competition between them. Serena glides through life due to her good looks, energy and charisma. Blair has always needed to work a little harder for people to fawn over her, although she technically is “Queen Bee”. Chuck Bass is a young entrepreneur noted for his financial ambition, sense of style, decadent lifestyle and for his roller coaster of a relationship with Blair. The exhilarating ups and downs of Chuck and Blair’s relationship is what keeps fans coming back for more. Winning any awards for its script or acting was always out of the question. The dialogue is clunky, the plot unrealistic and predictable and the acting is, at times, painful to watch. However, Gossip Girl does not try to succeed in any of these areas. What it does try to do, and what it completely succeeds at, is entertaining the viewer. Since the series has been off air, it has seemed to catch the interest of many teens who watch the series on Netflix as a “guilty pleasure”. More people are finding that they can not help but be enthralled by the interesting characters and the crazy situations they get into. The script is also very captivating, with its wit and sarcasm. The show also touches on many things that teens struggle with in real life such as eating disorders, partying, drugs, drinking, and sex. The drama in this series is obviously what captivates the viewers. It is all about over the top drama and glamor. This show has so many twists and turns; people try to guess what is coming next, but they never really know. It is not a predictable show and you never know what is coming around corner.

CHRISTINA HOLMES takes a dip into the different types of dips and the best time to bring them out to add a flavorable twist to any occasion. Dips have brought excitement to everyday meals and appetizers at parties, where people are brought together for celebration or just for the fun of it. Chip dips are a well known dish brought to the table everywhere from daily dinners to gatherings. Anywhere from stirring up a recipe at home to buying prepackaged containers already made, dips are a dish known across the country. "I love dips, they are really convenient and you can almost dip anything into them. Chips, vegetables, fruits and even sometimes meats," Kameren Wilburn, a senior, said. While one may sit down and consume numerous amounts of the dip provided, they may also be aware of the calorie intake. Different types of dips can range from one calorie all the way to over one hundred calories, it all is weighed on how much one intakes and what the ingredients may be. According to fatsecret.com, salsa has four calories in each tablespoon. “Chips and dip is something extremely cheap that col-

lege students always bring over when there are football games or whenever we just want to hang around and snack on food. It’s convenient and college student affordable,” Rebecca Meshinsky, a Cactus Shadows alumni, said. Banana bread, s'mores, chocolate Oreo, cheesecake, and Nutella whip are all different types of dessert dips that can be made at home. According to a review by a woman named Charly on the Nutella Whip Dip, on Thisheartofmineblog.com, she said, “This was amazing! The only recommendation I would make is to chill before serving. I fill dessert shells with it and topped them with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and bananas. "Sweet dips are so good and don't even need to be used for desserts, you can eat them at any time of the day," Ortiz said. ANDWICHED between Jimmy

Johns and Five Guys Burgers on Scottsdale road, Nekter is the hot new spot to go to for health fanatics all around the Scottsdale and Phoenix area. It is a little hard to find because it is a smaller location, but once found, it is definitely worth it. When I walked into Nekter for the first time, the first thing I thought was that it looked clean and fresh. I got the swift scent of healthiness as soon as I walked in. I did not think it could be possible to make a place smell like pure health without smelling revolting, but they pulled it off somehow.

18

Their acai bowls are great and I am a big fan of them, but it usually takes the staff an awkwardly long time to make them, so most of the time I go there I order a smoothie. My smoothie of choice would be the Pink Flamingo, not only is it refreshing and delicious but it also turns out to be this bright pink color and I am so in love with it. Even if it did not taste good, I would probably still order it because it is so nice to look at. Nekter also offers juice cleanses that are relatively cheap. They have grab and go bags fresh pressed daily that contain the six juices that are needed. If one needed a cleanse on a whim and did not

want to wait or pre order they can just stop in and get their blue bag to go. What the cleanse consists of is juice and that is it. People who are on the cleanse drink six juices a day, without eating any food. The only food that is acceptable to eat is raw almonds. I could never do something as extreme as that, and cleanses seem just a little too intense for me, but for people who are into that sort of stuff, Nekter is a great place to go. The only thing that I would complain about is the wait once you order. I have ordered acai bowls a few times and every single time I have never waited less than fifteen minutes, even if the place is not that

busy. It is the same with the smoothies, although the wait is never as long. I have never figured out why it takes so long, but it is definitely something that they should work on because I know I can not be the only one who feels like the wait should cut in half. Overall, I think Nekter is a brilliant idea for people who want to be healthy but who also enjoy indulging themselves, because it is the best of both worlds. They get the sweetness from their smoothie or acai bowl, without having the guilt that comes along with something that might not be as beneficial to their health. by GRACE ROWETT Style Editor

OPINION

2+2=4 High school administrators claim that their goal is to prepare their students for the “real world”. While this is a good objective to have, the way the school system approaches it is far off-base. In the real world, people do not have a higher authority looking over them making sure they do not mess up. The way people grow is by making their own decisions and making mistakes and suffering from the repercussions of these. When a kid messes up, they should either learn about it themselves or they should have their parents teach them a lesson about why what they did was wrong. By the time a kid reaches high school, hopefully he or she will not need their parents’ guidance as much as they did in their elementary and middle school years. Unfortunately, once a student moves up to high school, the parents start backing away and the school administrators start trying to involve themselves more than the parents do. The mistake that most schools make is confusing parental duties with the duties of the school by watching over their students on-campus as well as off-campus. Since schools get so involved in their students’ lives, it gives their parents the impression that they can slack off with their responsibilities. Parents nowadays are getting so used to having the school deal with everything that they do not know what to do when the time comes along for them to have to start stepping up to the plate. For the six on-campus hours a day, students are the school’s responsibility. Anything that goes on within that time period has to be dealt with by the school, and in some circumstances, the parents are called in to help deal with it. But as soon as a student leaves the boundaries of the institution, they are no longer the school’s problem. They either go back to their parents so the parent can fulfill their duties as they should, or they go off on their own way. The school has no reason or right to try and carry out their duties once the school day has passed. If a student is caught drinking off campus, it should be dealt with by the parents of the kid or by the police. It is not necessary for the whole school board to get involved and punish the kid for a decision they made outside of school. The only reason it would be acceptable were if these decisions that the student decided to make involving drinking affected their school life. This is when the school should step up and get to the bottom of it. More specifically, if the student that was caught drinking was an athlete, the school’s natural inclination would be to penalize them and not let them participate in sports until further notice. This approach is unfair to not only the athlete but to the entire team, because they have just lost a player. If the decisions a student makes at parties or any other event outside of school does not affect their grades, school life, and sports life, then the school should have no right to get involved in the situation.

O

by GRACEofROWETT WNER the English Rose Tea Room Style Editor and an active member of the community, Jo Gemmill has enchanted the town of Carefree with her talent, passion, and English charm. Sixteen years ago Gemmill and her husband decided to move to the United States from Southern England. “I moved to Seattle first with my husband, and stayed there for about three years before we moved to Arizona,” said Gemmill. Prior to moving to America, Gemmill was part of a ordinary, nine to five job. When Gemmill and her husband moved to Seattle, Gemmill did not work. After moving to Arizona, Gemmill started to crave the traditions from England that she grew up with. “Coming to Arizona, I started to miss the things that I was used to having around me, and that’s mainly why I started to do this,” said Gemmill. Another reason Gemmill decided to open the tea shop is because she sees America as “The American Dream”. She knew there was so much opportunity and she knew she could do anything she wanted to do. The point was to do something that she never did in England. A couple days after the tragedy of 9/11, doubt loomed over the idea of opening something new, but Gemmill took the chance and opened up her tea shop in Carefree. The objective was to make it as close to home for Gemmill as possible. On the opening day, Gemmill pulled down the curtain in her store, expecting to see a handful of people. To her surprise, a line of people was wrapped all the way around the shop. “Jo has created such a staple in Carefree, and every girl, and perhaps some guys, enjoy the Tea Room,” Sarah Nelson, a sophomore, said. Since the opening day, The tea room has become so well known that many famous people have paid a visit to the quaint lunch getaway. For example, a nutritionist for the US Olympic team always comes in, as well as numerous Broadway stars. “It is a good place to go if you are in the mood to dress up and have a day out with your friends, but you don’t feel like going too far or going all out,” said Robertson. The English Rose brings the timeless traditions of England to Carefree. The atmosphere, menu, and staff reflect the British customs that Gemmill knows and loves. Gemmill is also known around her town of Carefree for all of the community work she takes part in. The Tea Room has hosted fund raisers, events for the Royal Family, and countless parties. She feels like the community has given so much to her, that she needs to give just as much, if not more, back. “I founded the Cave Creek Christmas Festival. It is kind of a big deal considering it brings in 20,000 people every year. I am also involved in a lot of nonprofit organizations in the area. I would definitely say I am a very active member in the community,” Gemmill said.

Grace Rowett reviews the FatCat Ballroom swing dance lessons

FatCat Ballroom is a dance club in Phoenix which offers every type of dance class from salsa to swing. Novices and experts alike can dance the night away for only five dollars a person. The FatCat website boasts, “the Valley’s largest continuous, floating, hardwood dance floor where you can dance your weekends away amidst the subtly lit ambiance of a starry night; the cool breeze wisps away the heat of a setting summer sun.” Each night focuses on a different dance style, and Thursday night is swing dancing night. For a first timer, the experience can be a little overwhelming. On a recent night, the ballroom was filled with about one hundred and fifty people. It was an eclectic mix of people; young and old, as well as varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The lessons begin with the instructors lining people up in a circle. After only a half hour, the instructors felt that the students were ready to hit the dance floor. Friday and Saturday nights are the most popular classes. They begin at 7:30 p.m, and consist of a 45-minute basic class, followed by a short break and then a 45-minute advanced class. The class is followed by a “Club Host Party” that is a

social dance for all dancers. “They were able to take a modern dance studio with the incorporation of 50s music and make me feel as if I were in a malt shop in 1954,” Cotter Ewens, a senior, said. The music could be right from the set of the "Swing Kids," the jazz is two and three-step, and just keeping up with the beat will provide the average person with a work-out. In the crowd there were guys and girls dressed in jazzy clothes, swinging around the dance floor. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes, but definitely not flip flops, which are difficult to dance in. It is not necessary to bring a partner, for there are always other students to dance with. A night at the FatCat is great entertainment, fantastic exercise, and a fun date idea. “It was something that I wouldn’t normally think of doing, but I am really happy I ended up going because it was something different and fun,” Ewens said. The FatCat Ballroom is located at 3131 East Thunderbird Road in Phoenix. For more information, visit the website at fatcatballroomdance.com, or call (602) 324-7119.

1989 EXPERIENCES SWIFT ALBUM SALES FOR TAYLOR SWIFT Sayge Bolli examines Taylor Swift’s 1989, song by song, exploring Swift’s new eighties-inspired sound

Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated pop debut, 1989, was finally released in mid-October, selling millions of copies in the first week. The album is full of new sounds, new stories, and new collaborations. Like any good album, 1989 tells a story. “Welcome to New York” kicks things off with her own version of Once Upon a Time. The song explores not a love between two people, but the love she feels for New York city, where she moved earlier this year. This track gives listeners a perfect idea of what the rest of the album will be like from the get-go, stock full of catchy choruses and addictive beats that sound like they fell straight out of the eighties. “Blank Space” is only one of the songs on this record that it feels like fans have been waiting for for years. Finally Swift has found the courage to speak her mind and mock the media, all in a beautifully written song. . Just when fans were starting to worry that the old themes in Taylor Swift music they knew and loved was completely gone, Swift belts out “Style”, a perfectly placed song about a certain ex-boyfriend of hers. With the hilar-

iously ironic title, Swift sings about a timeless relationship, and the feelings she has that never seem to go out of style. With the help of her friend Jack Antonoff, Swift again takes a stab at the media and their negative influence on her life. “Out Of The Woods” blames the media for their role in breaking up their romance. “Remember when we couldn’t take the heat/ I walked out I said I’m setting you free,” Swift sings. “All You Had To Do Was Stay”, a sad story told to an upbeat tune, brings back some of the ele-

ply shake them off. “I Wish You Would” provides a new twist on an old idea, resembling the tone of her sophomore albums’ “Back To December.” Swift sings about realizing mistakes that were made on her part that led to the downfall of a relationship. “Bad Blood”, an immediate fan favorite, is Swift’s first song targeted at mean girls since Speak Now’s “Better Than Revenge.” Ruthlessly calling out another pop star who wronged her, Swift again brilliantly sticks up for herself with incredible lyrics and wonderfully placed bass drops. With lyrics like “band aids don’t fix bullet holes / you say sorry just for show / if you live like that you live with ghosts” Swift’s lyrics are as poetic as ever, perfectly painting the picture. Swift has been taking punches for years and this album makes it evident that she’s finally ready to start fighting back. “Wildest Dreams”, 1989’s power ballad, is nothing like Taylor Swift but still manages to sound just like her. Singing about more mature topics for the first time, but doing it in way that shows she is still conscious of her younger fans, this song sounds like

the record, it seems to be lacking something. “I Know Places” is the story of a couple always on the run. Swift compares them to foxes being hunted, planting the idea that she is again calling out the media. This song sounds completely different from anything else on the album, with a dark under-

A popular outfit would be to pair this hat with a long tunic and black leggings, a jacket,

crown of the hat gives the illusion of length.

Wild at Heart by GRACE ROWETT style editor

Operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week, Wild at Heart is an all-volunteer organization in Cave Creek that has been operating since 1990. This conservatory is dedicated to the preservation of Arizona’s wildlife. “I really enjoy volunteering at Wild at Heart because it combines my passion for giving back to the community and my love for animals,” Sarah LaRue, a senior, said. According to their website, since their opening in 1990, Wild at Heart has had a yearly average of 400 to 600 rescues with birds such as owls, hawks, and falcons. “Our mission is to get our name out there, as the mayor of Cave Creek said we are one of the most secret treasures in the area,” Jack Holloway, Wild at Heart volunteer, said. Wild at Heart has around 51 aviaries, or sanctuaries, on sight and are in the process of constructing a new one. With the aviaries they have, their goal is to have the public get a hold of them when they come across an injured owl or hawk, and then volunteers from Wild at Heart will go and pick up the injured bird so they can treat it at their facilities. They will then determine whether the bird needs fluids, food, or bandage for setting the wing. “The only birds we use for education are permanently injured birds. If there is any hope of them getting back into the wild, we don’t want them exposed to people,” Holloway said. Birds who are not as severely injured will be kept away from people. They are not allowed to be hand fed and they have as minimal human exposure as possible so they can get back into the wild and stay away from people as well. Once the birds are treated and start showing signs of improvement, they will be transferred to one of the several aviaries that Wild at Heart

has so the bird can get a feel for what it is like being independent and get the strength to fly again. Between February and July, Wild at Heart has many owls and hawks that come in as orphans. What the workers do is put the orphans with a pair of their foster parent birds, and those birds will take on the young as their own. While Wild at Heart does not pick up nonraptors, other animals such as quails, baby rabbits, and other critters from the area are brought in by local residents for temporary care. The workers only care for those animals until they can send them off to rehabbers, who specialize in the treatments of those types of animals. “We not only take in birds from across Phoenix, but all across Central Arizona as well like Glendale and Flagstaff,” Holloway said. Outside of the institution itself, workers at Wild at Heart bring their birds to schools to raise awareness of the importance of wildlife in the state. These programs are nonpolitical, and they are meant to encourage understanding and compassion for these animals. This facility continues to find new ways to involve the community in innovative ways, especially for junior volunteers and people with special needs. Junior volunteers who offer to help at Wild at Heart can also go on to help adults with the Burrowing Owls Project that is statewide. “Volunteering there was a really good experience, I thought it was really cool because I just think owls are awesome, but for some people it may not be what they like,” Suzanna Gormley. a senior, said. These opportunities help build leadership skills, job skills, and self-esteem while broadening knowledge about this state’s wildlife and how important conserving it is.

Interestingly, barn owls only weigh one pound, but due to their feathers they look much larger than what their weight entails. 2 BURROW OWLS are unlike any other owls because they live under ground instead of high spaces. “Music lasts because someone, somewhere still listens to it,” said Hudson. Songs from the past can be used today in order to help influence the artists of today. “Music is timeless because it’s all used for the same purpose and it brings people together,” senior, Emma Smith, said. “Every great artist has contributed a piece of history to the melting pot of American music, and each piece gets mixed together to become the newest genre of the century,” Walker, said. As a result the influence and change in music from the past music today has become more focused on what artists can take away from past generations. “You are sharing with others that you understand who influenced your style,” said Hudson. Artist’s songs also contain a lot of commentary on today’s events. Songs like “One Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis in which they focus attention of the people towards same sex equality. It was a liberation of music and of a generation that would go on to define the 1960s counterculture movement. Almost all popular songs of the period were about sex, but the censors forced the singers and songwriters to be creative in how they sang about it. For example, "Roll With Me Henry," was a very big Etta James hit that was changed to "Dance With Me Henry" when it was covered for white audience because it was deemed unseemly to sing about "rolling" with anyone.

worked up The stress of school is getting students...

by GRACE ROWETT style editor

Twenty-first century students have come to the point of devastation if they do not get a perfect 4.0 GPA. In extreme cases, students will have meltdowns for hours because they have been trained to believe that they will never be good enough unless they have the perfect GPA. At a young age, high school students are suffering from the side effects of stress by getting increasingly bad headaches, chronic fatigue, and irritation. "Sometimes I feel like I can never catch a break because of all the school work I have. I always stress myself out too much and work myself up until I see my grade, and most of the time I'm not satisfied," Emma Smith, a senior, said. While a little bit of stress can be a good thing as it motivates a person to do better, too much stress can backfire. Almost 40 percent of parents in the United States have said their high schooler is experiencing loads of stress that they never even imagined was possible. According to USA Today, more -Riley Becquet than a quarter (27 percent) say they experience "extreme stress" during the school year, vs. 13 percent in the summer. 34 percent expect stress to increase in the coming year. “I always find that I barely have any time to balance everything in my life. I have a job so that takes up a lot of my time, and when I get home I always have homework to do. I don’t have time for anything else,” Riley Becquet, a senior, said. Between balancing school work, a job, a social life, and family life, stress can be overwhelming to a student. Unhealthy behaviors associated with stress can start early and continue through adulthood, according to USA Today. The habits and ways people handle stress are apparently setting themselves up for "a life of chronic stress and illness." "I either find it incredibly hard sleeping at night or I'm constantly exhausted, there is not in between," Smith said. A report on USA today states that stress seems to be affecting teen's performance in all aspects of life; 40 percent admitted they ignored their duties at home, 29 percent said they neglect work or school, 32 percent said they suffered from bad headaches, and 26 percent reported changes in sleeping habits.

MEDITATION

According to Web MD, a few minutes spent practicing meditation each day can help relieve anxiety. Ther several different ways one can meditate, but the most common position is sitting up straight with both f the floor. The eyes should be closed and the arms at ease. The only thoughts going through one’s head w meditating should be positive mantras that either are being said aloud or silently.
