cover letter
Dear Mrs. Hart and Mr. Adamson: I am writing to you regarding the position of Editor in Chief. The award winning CSPress is a paper I am extremely proud to be a part of, and is something that has amazed me since my first day in this class. I feel that the content of our paper is very timely and relates well to our school. As the voice of the school I feel that we fairly reflect how people feel and what is actually going on. I personally liked our content because being as a student I like to know what is happening in our community and at our school. Overall, I have taken on many leadership roles all throughout my schooling and feel I thrive in these type of positions. As a leader it is very crucial to be a visible and an effective leader for your staff and the public. In order to make myself visible to the public, I would plan on becoming more active in the community. I would like to go to Sonoran Trails to help teach younger kids how to write articles, distribute leftover papers all over Cave Creek, and overall become better immersed in our community, and help the community to understand what the CSPress stands for; because I really want them to support this paper and want to be a part of it. There are several important aspects to being an effective leader which are; pride, organization, and ambition. Pride to me, is one of the most important thing you need to be a successful leader. I have a tremendous amount of pride for this paper and feel that it is essential to obtain a outstanding paper. Secondly, organization is an additional aspect that is important. Without organization, things get hectic and confusing and when trying to put together a paper organization is a necessity. Lastly, being ambitious is something I personally strive for and I feel is the most important out of the other three aspects. Ambition in regards to our paper, means having a desire to achieve greatness, and being determined to never settle for anything less. Without a doubt having all of these three traits would help to make anybody an effective leader. The paper under my leadership will be a something completely unique and positive experience. The first thing that sets me apart from other candidates is that I am proposing to be a co editor in chief with Annalee Barnett. I feel that having two editors in chief would be great for the paper because first, there would be more people to help out the staff and editors, and one more person to edit articles which would be much more efficient. Secondly, Annalee and I work very well together and share the same passion for the paper. We feel we can make the paper the best it can be with our leadership, ambition, and communication skills. Aside from co editing, I have certain plans for the paper if chosen to be a co editor in chief. First, since I am leader who enjoys communicating, I want to become more involved with my staff and editors. I would implement weekly or monthly breakfasts were we all meet before school and discuss our problems and successes and also get to know each other better. I feel that by connecting with others, you get to better understand who someone is. I also would become more involved with my editors, helping to design pages and ensuring that I did everything in my power to help get articles completed. In addition, I also feel that I am the right person for this job because this whole year I have attended every production day, have never turned in an incomplete article and am extremely responsible. As co editor in chief my responsibility would only increase but of course I would still be very reliable. Being responsible is a necessity in order to be editor in chief. If chosen, I would take the job very seriously, and would ensure the paper is still achieving success. My pride for this paper is unbelievable, and I would do anything to make sure articles get done, pages get designed and anything else that could happen. I would love this position not only because I love leadership and being ambitious, but when it comes down to it I really just love this paper and want it to be the best it can be, and with Annalee and I, I feel it can and will be. Sincerely Lauren Haggar Travel Editor

Over the course of my first year in newspaper I have learned many invaluable skills
and experiences. One the most important things I learned was how importnant it is to absorb all the information supplied for you. In this Adamson provided me with a wealth of information particularly about Indesign and Photoshop. I tried my very best to absorb all of the information given to me. In addition to absorbing knowledge, I gained many skills regarding production and deadlines. Production days taught me how to many my time and focus on improving my Indesign abilities. Deadlines most importantly taught me why being great a time management is so important. Personally, team work is one of the most important things for any staff to have. Without a cooperative staff, having a award winning paper would be impossible. A new addition to this semester was having to sell ads. Selling ads taught me how to be more confident and approach all different types of people. Likewise with one year of jounralism under my belt I feel that I have shown my dedication through my many hours of editing, designing, and mos importantly writing. I have always stepped and made sure this paper was the best it could be. I will use the skills learned in this class all throughout my life due to the leadership and responsibiliy it has taught me.
reflection one I feel that my most significant piece of work for the CSPress this year was my article “Everyday Dogs, Extreme Training. This article was one of my best pieces of work all year. The article itself was fairly easy to write because I am extremely passionate about the topic and I was friendly with the people I was interviewing, which made the whole process easier. But at the same time I had trouble being unbiased due to my love for the place and it’s people. Originally upon writing the article it was very disorganized and had random thoughts everywhere. After the revision process the article became something I love and am extremely proud of. It now had a clear message and made sense, with logic and reasoning behind each paragraph and quote. One particular thing I learned this year, especially with this piece is how important organization is to properly achieve your message. I really loved how at the end of my article I felt that I had covered everything wanted to get in there without being too wordy or going into too much detail. I also liked how I had many different interviews and quotes to support my paragraphs. Personally I feel quotes are what makes an article, and I was really proud of myself that I was able to get quotes that represented my article well. Overall I feel that piece represented my capabilities to the staff, and was a piece that was exciting for the readers.
reflection two The piece that I feel needs the most work is the article I wrote about the fashion show called “Fearless fashionistas take the runway. One of the main issues with this article was that I wrote this article the night before production day due to the fact that the show was happening the night before production day. The article really didn’t evolve from the first draft at all, besides a few grammatical changes. It lacked organization and there was a lot of grammatical errors with quotes and other things. This article is not something I am proud of at all, I wish I had had more time to go through the revision process and thoroughly edit it. The lesson I learned from this article is no matter what to have at least one person edit it before it goes on an actual page, and to try to better at catching my own mistakes. In addition the article had no flare or really anything that would want to make the reader continue reading it. Originally when creating this piece I had high hopes and once I realized how much time I had to write it, I got overwhelmed and rushed. So, without a doubt next time I have to write article I am going to my best to be proactive and be a better self editor.

Reflection three The picture I am the most proud of this semester is the one featured with my article about Hunter Canine. I particularly like this photo because of the action and movement in the photo. The photo contains repetition with the numerous barrel of hay stacked together, and the barrels also are the center of the photo. But then with Justine Jones the trainer to the right of the barrels and the dog to the left your eyes are pulled in all different directions. I also really love how Jones is looking at the dog and dog is looking forward which I feel helps to add interests and makes you wonder where the dog is off to next. Rule of thirds applies to this photo with both of the subjects. The part that I love the most about this photo is how determined and powerful the dog looks. In addition you can tell by the slight smile on Jones face how proud is of him. Also, I really like the colors in this photo especially the contrast between the shirt and the dog. In conclusion I feel this photo is my best one this year and is a very powerful image.

Reflection four As my first year of newspaper comes to an end I feel that I have a major asset to this publication. I truly feel that I am one of the most dedicated people on the staff. I am a very active member of the staff and am always willing to take on new challenges and opportunities. I always make sure to communicate well, and be as proactive as possible. I go the extra mile to assure things get done, such as getting interviews from LuLuLemon’s instructors, doing assignments that people didn’t do and offering my help whenever possible. As an editor, I always try to give the best feedback and help I can. This semester one particular writer was struggling with an article for the travel section. I then not only talked to her, but I created an outline with detailed notes to explain how the article should be written. In addition I always make sure to log on and edit all my articles during production week. In addition I attended every production day and stayed until my pages were 100 percent complete. Likewise, I put an extreme amount of effort into learning in design, writing my articles, and making sure everything’s close to perfect possible. It is self evident that my dedication shines through in my work, and my attitude towards the class. I feel that I am a great example of an edito to other editor and the staff and I strive everyday to be the best person I can be.
Reflection five With all of the high points in newspaper there was also some struggles I faced this year. One major struggle that continued from last semester was dealing with disrespectful staff. Despite the efforts made by all of us editors we faced people who disrespected us, whether it be how they talked and or treated us, or doing things like deleting comments. Despite sometimes how disrespectful people got under my skin, it taught me invaluable lessons. It taught me that despite how you are to others sometime people aren’t going to respect you or like you for reasons that you can’t control. This taught me that you really have to focus on yourself and as long as at the end of the day you believe that you treated others right then there is absolutely nothing you can do to change other except to keep being the best you possible. In this semester I really feel that I learned how to communicate better as a leader. In addition along with these challenges with others I feel like I handled them well, and with respectful towards others. If problems like this are to arise again, I will continue to just be who I am and try to help people to the best abilities and if they don’t want to receive my help, then at the end of the day I can continue to try with them and just be me and stick to my morals and have integrity.
reflection six My biggest weakness publications related is working with Indesign. Although I have become quite proficient in Indesign I still have a lot to learn. In order to become more skilled in Indesign I plan on downloading Indesign at home and working on my skills. I also plan in my next years in newspaper you try to absorb as uc info as I can from Mr. Adamson, who is just a wealth of knowledge when it comes to photoshop and Indesign. Likewise, I could also watch online tutorials to further my knowledge. Other than these plans, I look forward to learning more about Indesign next year and continue to use Lori Hart and Robert Adamson as tools to help me learn.

TEar sheets February THE FORCE AWAKENS IS BETTER THAN EVER
Disney has brought Star Wars back to theaters, which is great for the thousands of Star Wars fans who have been waiting for this moment since the release of Return of the Jedi. The Force Awakens has brought many new actors into the Star Wars franchise, which will help to phase out the original trilogy cast. Many have stated that The Force Awakens is not similar to A New Hope. It does share its similarities, but Disney could be doing this to appeal to the next generation of fans or for viewers that have never seen any Star Wars film before. Prior knowledge of the original trilogy before viewing The Force Awakens is unnecessary to understand the story, but it may help supplement the new material. The newer film focuses on an new set of heroes, and while it helps to know characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, they are only supporting characters. Their story has already been told making them like Ben Kenobi, whose backstory was not revealed until the release of the prequels. The widely popular Expanded universe that was supported by a large amount of books and comics were the original canon, until Disney took over and created their own canon universe. Disney has chosen new authors for its canon books, which have created many new and exciting adventures of characters new and old. Disney also plans continue to print the now non-canon novels, under the mantle of “Legends” with a large stripe on the outside cover to signify the difference. The current ongoing cartoon “Rebels” has been met with positive reviews because it was a quick replacement for the previous series “The Clone Wars.” Rebels continues the story of the Disney canon universe, as well as including and developing Clone Wars characters. Disney’s direction with the show is giving hints at their future plans, as well as acknowledging the original works. The video games created under Disney’s control have been managed by major game publishers, like Electronic Arts. Control of various game series such like Star Wars: Battlefront are being continued by these new publishers. EA has brought a fresh new spin to the Battlefront franchise by supplementing many tools from their previous independent properties. There are some problems with Disney’s control of the franchise, such as the replacement of the original story set after Return of the Jedi, but still using material from it in a different fashion. The closure of Lucasarts, ending the production of many Star Wars video games before they could be released, was also seen as a major problem. Disney has had its ups and downs trying to continue the franchise based on the legacy and impact it is shown to have. They are doing their very best to please the fans that have stayed with this franchise from the start and those who are now coming in.

SEE IT MY WAY
4LAUREN HAGGAR
Along time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was a different storyline imagined for the Star Wars sequels. I have been a fan of Star Wars since I was in middle school. I read every character, costume, weapon and movie guide out there. I poured over every book out there about Star Wars and after George Lucas sold the rights to Disney, I felt betrayed. When news came that sequels were in the making, I was generally apathetic because J.J. Abrams had decided that all of the expanded universe books written not canon and no longer held any correlation to the Star Wars story. In the original sequel story, written by Kevin Anderson and Rebecca Moesta, the reader follows the adventures of Jacen and Jaina Solo. A New Republic was in place, founded by Luke Skywalker, and it fought the last of the Galactic Empire. This story nicely followed the events of Return of the Jedi, while still maintaining an original story with new, authentic characters. Despite my adoration for the original story arc, I do think that Abram’s story is still good, but it does steal ideas from the original arc that are out of place. For instance, Kylo Ren being named Ben Solo is out of place for both Han and Leia. Luke was the only one who really had a connection to Obi-wan “Ben” Kenobi; Leia knew of Ben but not personally, while Han had only dealt with him the few days they traveled to Alderaan. In the original story, Luke had named his child Ben. Similarly, by getting rid of the expanded universe, it leaves some unanswered questions about Han Solo or Princess Leia’s pasts. One of the best things about the expanded universe comics and novels was how much the reader was able to learn about their favorite characters. Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber is one of my favorite expanded universe books because it includes young Han Solo and Chewbacca. After reading that book, I felt like I knew Han and Chewie a bit better because I got to experience something that happened to them before they met Luke and Leia. Confusion has also come about in regards to the validity of video games and shows that were made after the release of the prequels, such as the cartoon Clone Wars which follows the adventures of Anakin and Obi Wan. If the expanded universe was deemed not canon, does that include other movies and shows?

THE REPORT CARD Mr. Cactus shadows With lots of interesting acts and unique outfits, the boys strutted their stuff to compete for the title of Mr. Cactus Shadows. But, the show ran a little long due to the amount of contestants.
b PARTICIPATION IN DRESS UP DAYS The Hoopcoming dress up days included many fun themes such as dress like a biker day and flannel day. There was some participation but there seemed to be a lack of interest from the student body which made the days a little less exciting.
c
talent show From singing to dancing, students premiered their talents while helping raise money for the IB program. Many awards were given such as best overall, which was awarded to Bobbi Kerr. In addition, Gabriella Payne won best non vocal for tapping, best vocal award was given to Abby Walker and Rachel Dutcher, and lastly the audience favorite was Sarah Mahinay. Despite minor technical difficulties, the show was a success.

CTE Academy will pose new challenges Recently, there has been talk of creating a CTE Academy and moving the CTE classes from the main campus to the old Desert Arroyo campus. The building would house classes such as newspaper, yearbook, marketing, and digital journalism, and would possibly include new classes, such as hospitality and culinary. This may be a positive for other classes, but it would not be beneficial for the yearbook and newspaper classes to move to a separate campus. Think about it. Everything that yearbook and newspaper students report about takes place on campus. The job of the paper and yearbook is to provide stories about our school, and much of this happens during the school day -- science labs, student presentations, teaching moments, and more. It is critical for reporters and photographers to be in the middle of everything to do that job successfully. While the staff could plan for big events, such as assemblies, being so far from the main campus would cause them to miss out onww other important moments that occur during the school day. During class, students are often called into the newspaper and yearbook room to be interviewed and photographed. If these classes were moved all the way over to the Desert Arroyo campus, students would have to travel there. That is extremely inconvenient for those students,
AS WE SEE IT THE EDITORIAL
and will cause them to miss out more on class time. Another CTE program that would be negatively affected by the move would be the student store. The store would obviously need to remain where it is, in the middle of campus. That means that the students who work in the store would have to trek across campus. It just does not make sense. Relocating could benefit the digital journalism and marketing classes. If provided a bigger space, digital journalism would have more room to film, and to store their larger equipment. They might also have enough space to allocate a certain rooms to accommodate editing, sound, and filming. It is true that having more space would also be good for yearbook and newspaper. There would be room for a legitimate photography studio, which could include more advanced lighting and equipment that could remain up permanently. There would be increased storage for cameras and other equipment. However, these potential benefits do not outweigh the possible conflicts the move could create. If the goal is to continue producing award winning publications, it is important to have the yearbook and newspaper staff right where they should be -- in the middle of everything.

HAPPY HOLI(BIRTH)DAYS The first time these days collided was when I was a year old, so there’s not much to say about that one, but eight year old me did not like it.
F
SARA WINDOM EBRUARY… every football lover’s favorite month,
their minds wandering with all the food they’re going to eat, guessing the winning team, and… it’s also my birthday. Even though I’ve only had my birthday on the Super Bowl three times in my life, having a holiday-birthday can be hard, especially when I was younger. The first time these days collided was when I was a year old, so there’s not much to say about that one, but eight year old me did not like it. The year is 2008, a very attention-seeking birthday girl is unhappy at the lack of party she is receiving. The superbowl tradition in my house was that my grandparents would come over, we would watch the game and talk about adult stuff like the economy and taxes and other things eight year old me did not care about. The whole day felt like a Sixteen Candles scenario, everyone forgot it was my birthday… nobody forgot it was the Superbowl. The only thing that really helped everyone remember was the cake we bought with a small eight on top, which, my mom and I had to basically wave in everyone’s face to get their attention and have them sing a halfhearted rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Eight year old me was not impressed. Seven years later, fifteen year old me was ready to kick the Super Bowl's butt. I was not only more mature, but really, I
didn’t think anything could be worse than 2008. By this time in my life, I was done having parties, so my parents and I made it a tradition to order a bunch of food from Barro’s and stuff our faces with as much pizza and birthday cake as possible. The Super Bowl was on and we were half watching when our neighbors called from across the street, they invited us over to their Super Bowl party. My parents declined at first, probably because they felt like they had to, but we ended up going anyway. The party was pretty much the best part of my birthday, there was loads of food, so many dogs and new, interesting people to talk to. Fifteen- year -old me was very impressed. Comparing having my birthday on the Super Bowl sounds pretty obnoxious, I know, especially when there are people out there who have their birthday on Christmas, every year. Having your birthday on the same day as Jesus’s probably isn’t great whether it’s the doubling up on gifts, or Jesus overshadowing YOUR day, I get it. For me, it’s not all that bad. It also helps if you’re not alone, my best friend and I have the same birthday, so we suffer together when necessary. So, when 22- year- old me shows her face on Super Bowl Sunday, things will hopefully go as smoothly as they did the last time.

SETTLING IN WITH SCIENTOLOGY While I still do not fully understand the religion, and why people join, I still stand by my previous statement about people having the choice to practice whatever they please. Take Anne for example, she has been with Scientology since 1974 and will stay with them for the remainder of her life.
A
overview about the most secretive religion, Scientology. With only the internet aiding me, I did not get the bulk of what I needed to write an in depth article. This time, I took it a step further and went to the church itself to get a closer look. This was not the first time I had been to the Phoenix Church of Scientology, so when I got there, I saw a familiar face, we can call him Adam. He was excited to see me, and quick to help me get started. First, I had to pay a 50 dollar “donation fee” (which really is not a donation if I have to pay), and then he took me to the second floor where my seminar was held. On our way up, I had asked Adam, “so, this is noncommittal, right?” feeling anxious that I would be roped in. “Of course,” he replied, “you can leave whenever you’d like.” If I did decide to stay, I had to sign a legal form saying that I would not turn around and sue the church (this had happened a few times before). That silenced me until we reached the classroom.
The teacher, we will call her Anne for the sake of the article, was an older woman. She was dressed in a suit and had pearls around her neck and a few Scientology pins. She informed me during our break that she has been with Scientology since 1974, and her mother knew L. Ron Hubbard personally.
Hubbard was the founder of the religion, he wrote a book about Dianetics, which is a set of ideas and principles regarding the connection between the mind and the body. Saying that her mother knew him personally means she had a stronger connection with the religion, and how devoted she was to him and his ideals. The one thing that really stuck out to me about Anne was how strongly she felt about Hubbard. She mentioned that he was generous and selfless, that he would even help the gardener if he was looking a little down. I learned all of this in just a five minute break. The class itself lasted for about three hours, and it felt more like a therapy session than an
actual class. We went through one of Hubbard’s books, The Problems of Work, which was about how to apply Scientology to the workplace. Another person and I were both meant to be in the class, but due to scheduling, I was alone.
Anne started out by telling me about the pens she bought from OfficeMax. I am guessing it was to help me feel comfortable, so I readily joined the conversation. She reassured me that if I was free to interrupt with questions any time, it was a class after all. The class was basically watching short videos about each chapter and discussing it. The videos were
roughly ten minutes long, and most told of a struggle within someone, a reason why they were struggling (usually their character/attitude), and a solution (usually something to do with coming in and taking a class).
GETTING TO WORK After the clip, it was time for me to get to work. Anne asked what I was struggling with and how the lesson would help me fix those problems. For each worksheet (which she kept for my student file), I wrote something about connecting with my family or talking to the customers more at work. She seemed satisfied with my answers and replied, “very good” to every sheet I turned in. Halfway through, we took a five minute water and muffin break. I took the chance to look around the second floor, which was empty. Auditing rooms lined one of the hallways, and offices lined the other. I was surprised there were not a lot of people there. Since it was a Saturday afternoon, I assumed they would be busy with interviews and other classes. After roaming the halls, I found Anne, and she began to talk about Hubbard again and all the books he wrote. Everywhere I turned, there were bookshelves of DVDs, books, and pamphlets for sale. After the break, we talked about church and Anne mentioned that they had Mormons and Christians who attended classes. I was con-
fused because I thought Scientology was a religion. Anne replied, “We don’t have a spirituality. We just help you get through life, and do better as a being.” I nodded my head, but I kept thinking that she contradicted herself, because one minute she was talking about the eight dynamics, which mention reaching a spiritual dynamic or a spiritual state, and then said they had no spirituality. The class ended an hour and a half later, and I was exhausted. It took everything in me not to fall asleep during the clips. I was somewhat disappointed. It does not seem like there is any “Big Truth” to discover about Scientology. Everything that Anne taught was common knowledge. We all know that we have to communicate and that sometimes we get depressed or angry.
We went back downstairs in search of Adam, who had wanted to see me after to discuss the class. Anne walked me to the room with the rows and rows of books and TVs. While we waited, she pointed out books that could help with my problems (to which I replied “oh, that’s convenient”), and she just smiled. After about five minutes, she realized that I was not going to be able to see him. She said he would call me, and we said goodbye.
While I still do not fully understand the religion, and why people join, I still stand by my previous statement about people having the choice to practice whatever they please. Take Anne for example, she has been with Scientology since 1974 and will stay with them for the remainder of her life. She had the kindest words to say about her practice, and the founder, and did not once push her faith onto me, she only suggested things that she knew herself would help. She honestly surprised me, as I expected some young person to push Scientology in my face, but Anne truly believed that this was the only way to reach salvation, and that is what religion is all about.
LOVE SHOULD NOT BE CONFINED TO JUST ONE DAY
S the fourteenth of February rolls around again, people begin to save up their money to buy gifts for their significant other. Valentine's day is the one day of the year dedicated to love and relationships. However, we do not need a specific day of the year just dedicated to love and being in a relationship. Valentine's day is commercializing love. According to U.S. News, Americans spent a mind blowing 18.9 million dollars on Valentine's day in 2015. If that statistic does not scream commercialization, I do not know what else will. In fact, the two most responsible for the modern day image of Valentine's day was a clever entrepreneur trying to make some money. Esther Howland had THE CACTUS SHADOWS PRESS
the idea to mass produce Valentine’s day cards, and the rest, as they say, is history. Valentine’s day is making love seems as if it is something that can be bought. In truth, you cannot buy love, no matter how hard you try to. It is something that must be felt by somebody regardless of if they receive a ridiculously overpriced Tiffany necklace for Valentine’s day or not. I read an article about Valentine's day on a website called Business 2 Community, and that article opened with this, “Valentine’s Day… the one set day a year that we get to show appreciation to the people we love.” We should respect and show appreciation for loved ones every day of the year. Valentine's day should not be a specific day
where you treat everyone around you better and with more love just because it is a day with a label. Yes, I realize that having a holiday including overpriced candy and the expectation of receiving a gift from your significant other is hurting nobody. Maybe it is hurting your wallet, but hey spend your money how you wish. However, it is the idea that there needs to be a specific day to show this love that is ridiculous. Instead of setting aside a specific day for love, show love to those close to you every day, not just the day that you feel obligated to. The only redeeming factor that this holiday has to offer to us is the extremely cheap leftover Valentine’s day candy in the stores the day after.

While 16 ounce shampoo bottles, full water bottles, and blades that are longer than four inches are typically banned items from carry-on luggage, some people pack objects that go beyond the threshold of strange. Here, in no particular order, are some of the most bizarre items confiscated by the TSA. BEAR REPELLANT Yes, eight ounces of bear repellant, discovered at Arizona’s own Sky Harbor International Airport. 6 ½ INCH THROWING KNIVES A pair of ninja knives were found in a hollowed-out book on, quite fittingly, ninjas, at the Reagan International Airport in Washington D.C. back in 2011. SAMURAI SWORD: Whether or not the guilty party was heading to or from a comic convention, the TSA confiscated the sword, which is definitely prohibited, no matter how well you can wield it. SPEARGUN: This item was confiscated at an airport in Denver; the words “spear” and “gun” should have been insightful hints to the fact that a speargun is prohibited from a carry on. VAPE SHAPED LIKE A GRENADE While vaping devices are permitted in carry on luggage, ones that look like any sort of explosive or weapon are not permitted. BLAST KNUCKLES This weaponof-choice, impounded at Sky Harbor International, is a combination of brass knuckles and a stun gun, which can certainly pack a punch against an attacker. Stun guns are allowed in checked baggage, but not in a carry on. BATARANGS Batman must have decided he wanted to blend in with the crowd flying back from Newark Liberty International Airport. Unfortunately, he forgot to leave his knives at home; guess his parents never taught him that. GRENADES Whoever thought it was a mind-blowing idea to pack anything that resembles an explosive thought wrong. Over the course of 30 days, the TSA confiscated 19 inert grenades and one live grenade. You can see more of what the TSA discovers by following them on Instagram, or by searching the hashtag #tsacatch. Remember to check the TSA's rules and guidelines when packing for a trip.

DECORATED FOR CHRISTMAS, Disney-
ESPITE THE HUSTLE, BUStle, and long lines, millions of tourists flock to the happiest place on earth for their summer and spring vacations. Timing, tools, and technique are some of the many elements needed in taking on the park. There are multiple different strategies when it comes to Disney and all of them include being prepared. Time of year and crowds go hand in hand. When long lines and mobs of people compromise the trip, avoiding these obstacles makes for a more enjoyable vacation. In certain seasons, such as spring break and Christmas time, Disney sees their highest attendance rates. “We intentionally planned a trip for the weekend after Easter since everyone is usually done traveling at that time. It always seems to work out best, because we didn’t wait in line for more than twenty one minutes for any ride,” said Molly Gum, an English teacher and Disney enthusiast. The least amount of people travel to the park from mid-September to midNovember. During this time, guests can visit when the park is decorated for Halloween or Christmas depending on Molly the dates. Mid-January through midGum, a March and mid-April through mid-May Disney are also times where Disney does not see enthusiast as harsh of crowds. During any given week both the main park and California Adventure are the least crowded on weekdays, primarily Tuesday to Thursday. Getting an early start also helps avoid long lines. Fast passing is best done in the morning. This can be done by going to the desired ride and scanning tickets at the fastpass station. The machines

distribute a ticket that gives a time. Returning back to the ride during the time will give the party access to a shorter line. It also helps to fast-pass the most popular rides early in the morning. “I usually fast pass Tower of Terror and Space Mountain first, only because these rides always have the longest lines, no matter what day,” said Zoe Ruiz, a sophomore. Wait times and long lines often put a damper on Disney vacations so anyone looking for the shortest lines should become fast-passing savvy. The most popular rides draw the most people so it is smarter to fast pass these first. When it comes to what to wear for a day in the park, comfort and accessibility becomes key. It is important to wear something that is loose and comfortable. This becomes especially essential in footwear. A trip to Disney comes with a lot of walking so wearing shoes that are easy to walk in makes for a better trip. "I usually wear something cute and comfortable that I know I can last a whole day of walking in,” said Arielle Stanley, a sophomore. It is important to travel light so a small backpack should hold all the items. This way it is not a hassle when it comes to rides. “My necessities for a day at Disney are my sunglasses, my minnie ears, a water bottle, my wallet and my portable charger," said Ruiz. Drinks and snacks are also a good thing to have because the food is often expensive at Disney. Often there are long lines for food so having something to snack on during the day is an accessible option. Although snacks will tide an appetite over, the restaurants are important to think about while in the park. There is a number of crowd and financial factors that can be taken into consideration when deciding where to eat. Some of the best restaurants to eat at while in the park are the ones that are easiest to get in and out of. The Galactic Grill and the Hungry Bear Restaurant are two examples of fast food for cheap at the Disney parks.

Students who were in Renee Diether’s honors biology class as freshmen, are going to Europe this summer to learn more about the different cultures and countries through experience. Twelve students and their two advisors, Renee Diether and Andrew Cupo, leave on May 26 to embark on their trip to England, Ireland, Wales, and France. The group will be staying overseas for 11 days, spending a few days in each country. Many students will be traveling out of the country for the first time. “I have never been to Europe but I have been studying French for four or five years now, so I am excited to go to Paris and see the culture that I’ve been learning about for so long,” said Drew Ballard, a sophomore. The trip is through Education First (EF) tours and will feature many guided excursions around each of the countries. Students will visit a variety of different sites while in Europe. In Ireland, individuals will experience a sheep dog demonstration, and visit a variety of museums and historic landmarks. “We are going to super cool places so the opportunity is amazing and it’s with school so you’re learning,” said Hollis Johnson, a sophomore. While in London, students will get the chance to see the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament. Students are also given time to go and explore on their own. “I think it’s the wow factor in their eyes… a lot of these kids have never seen it or experienced it and the excitement you see, it’s like watching a baby take its first steps,” said Renee Diether, a biology teacher. Hollis Johnson, a The tour also features an sophomore. extension to Paris where students will be able to see the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and much more. The walking tours cover all of the most popular tourist attractions and provide information on the history of the different sights. The trip was offered to students in spring of 2015. Diether gave the opportunity to individuals in her honors biology classes. The classes as a collective brainstormed different destinations and finally decided on the current trip. Students going on the trip range from seasoned travelers to newbies. “I wish I had done this or offered it more often,” said Diether. “There is no expectations, it’s just let’s go and have a blast,” said Diether. Diether also takes IB students on their senior trip. This is the first, and last, year this type of trip will be offered.
PERFECT PACKING Rees Bixler explains how to pack the perfect carry on suitcase By REES BIXLER spotlight editor §
Traveling students must follow these steps to pack a carry on efficiently for one week. First, it is important to choose wisely. “If traveling in the U.S. people generally overpack and hotels usually have the toiletries you need,” said Doni Nasr, a frequent traveler. Prior to pulling all your shirts off the hangers, consider where you’re traveling to and its’ climate. When visiting a blustery environment, pack a couple pairs of pants but don't forget to bring a pair of shorts too because weather changes quickly. Vise versa with a warmer destination. Next, pack your shirts or sweaters. “I just wash if I'm staying for an extended period of time,” said Nasr. Throughout the cold journey you will need thicker clothes, pants, and some beanies and gloves that will add to your bags holding capabilities, so sacrifices will have to be taken and some items with have to be left behind. Like Nasr, you may also use “airtight bags” that help as a space saver. Packing space will also be saved when using a packing cube or airlock bags. A popular company who makes packing cubes is Eagle Creek. The bonus of this saved space in the bag is a place for souvenirs that have been found at your destination. Also there is more space for extra underwear. Take a step back and check out all your outfit options and how they match. This allows you to add another shirt or pair of pants that could allow more options while still using few items or take out clothes that may not fit with other clothes packed, maximizing space in your bag. When packing, rolling all clothes possible of rolling and placing components like soap, toothbrushes, etc. in between rolled clothes or on the sides where it fits best helps. For some, packing flat is better. It is just a matter of personal opinion. “I fold them flat,” said Prager “It is better than rolling if you place the clothes so they fit well with shoes and accessories.” Picking a bunch of outfits that look cute and stylish may not have the best function. The best advice is to “pack for every situation that you have,” said Logan Larkin, a junior. “Having all different types of equipment is good so you are prepared for every situation.” Think about which clothes would work best for you and where you will be. At the end of a trip most people usually have worn the same outfit half of the time. For packing light, the function of your clothes is necessary to save space. Bringing a pair of dress shoes and wearing a pair of functional shoes is the best way to save space, due to the size of shoes. If extra space is available, Alex Exum said the best entertainment for a flight or road trip is “a coloring book.” Other options are headphones for music, playing cards, or movies.

NEW SPANISH TEACHER TAKES UP PERMANENT RESIDENCE By LAUREN HAGGAR

BEING THE “NEW KID” IS not just a title reserved for students. For teacher Alex Burghardt, who is new to the school, this is just the beginning of sharing his passion for Spanish. Born and raised in South Dakota, Burghardt took Spanish classes and continued to study Spanish into college. Burghardt attended Augustana University and moved to Arizona in July of 2015. “This is my first full time teaching job and it's a big change, especially for me coming out to Arizona being from South Dakota and not knowing anybody at all,” said Burghardt. The Spanish department was in need of a teacher due to the absence of a consistent teacher for the past two years. “The staff I work with are awesome, because the entire Spanish department has been so helpful,” said Burghardt. The preparation requires a microwave safe mug, a microwave and a few ingredients. “I liked the fact that it was so quick,” said Allie Holt, a sophomore. Mug foods are full meals that, like mug cakes, can be made in a matter of minutes. There is a mug food for every meal of the day. Breakfast offers options such as omelettes, oatmeal, muffins, and french toast. This is a quick way to grab breakfast on the go. Lunch and dinner also have some accessible options such as macaroni and cheese, chicken pot pie, stews, and lasagna. Different types of food calls for different types of ingredients. These recipes can be found on Pinterest or baking websites. The variations of desserts include items such as cheesecake, lemon cake, and even banana bread in a mug. These recipes typically serve one, eliminating the aspect of sharing. Most mug food recipes only require a minute or two in the microwave to cook. There are some factors that do have minor variations across recipes. In this case, it is important to check the voltage on both the microwave being used at home and the voltage being used in the recipe. “All of the recipes online, they differ between the voltages of your microwave, so it depends, you have to monitor some of the ingredients depending on the voltage of your microwave asks for,” said Lauren Finley, a sophomore. Factors like this especially change when talking about making desserts in a mug as opposed to making meals in a mug. The chocolate cake mug cake is widely popular along with the chocolate chip mug cake. These recipes call for ingredients such as baking soda, flour, egg yolk, sugar and other basic baking elements. YMCA OFFERS FREE YOGA IN THE GARDEN
In our world today there are many pressures and stresses regarding money and health, but free yoga can change all of that. “Life gets crazy sometimes and yoga allows you to simply chill out for a second. The physical practice can benefit people for many years, but the mental practice of yoga is something you can carry on through the rest of your life,” said Lia Fondrisi, Lululemon yoga instructor. The Desert Foothills Family YMCA now offers free yoga every Monday at the Carefree Sundial from 11 am to 12 pm. All levels of skill are welcome, and there is no prior knowledge needed about yoga to join the class. There are a few supplies required and recommended for the class. A yoga mat is a necessity to participate because the class takes place outside. Water, and proper clothing are also advised when taking the class. “I thought yoga was really relaxing and I got really flexible which was cool” said Riley De Bellis, sophomore. Attire for yoga is simply anything that allows movement and room to breath. This basically means any athletic clothing. Wearing the right clothing will overall improve the experience. In addition to free yoga in Carefree, Lululemon located in the Biltmore area is offering free yoga. The last Wednesday of every month at 7:30 pm and every Sunday at 10:30 am classes are held. “I think it’s cool that they are offering free yoga because people shouldn’t have to pay for something that is healthy for you, and it also encourages people to go,” said Kiera Jost, a sophomore. The lessons are located in the Lululemon store and depending on the weather classes can be held outdoors on the Biltmore Fashion Park lawn. “I truly believe yoga can benefit everyone and every body. I think yoga can seem scary at first for beginners, but yoga is special because it teaches us to stop worrying about what everyone else thinks of us. It allows us to shut off the chatter of the mind, which is a really special thing,” said Fondrisi. The purpose of the program is to encourage others to get active. The classes welcome a large variation of skill level. Yoga gives individuals the opportunity to build upon basic knowledge and continue to improve.

February’s warm weather has extended in to March and has gotten us wondering...
HOW TO PACK A PICNIC
W
ITH spring right around the corner, picnics are a fun and relaxing activity. But in order to have a successful picnic, there are a few guidelines to follow. Every good picnic starts with a solid basket. Whether it is wicker, or plastic, a spacious bag or basket will improve the experience. This does not necessarily have to be the classic picnic basket, any bag or cooler that carries food will work. “I usually bring it in a picnic basket, not the authentic kind, just the cheap ones you get from Walmart,” said Allie Workman, a sophomore. Next, every great picnicker has to have a tablecloth or blanket to sit on. This provides comfort and a unique way to show your personality. “When we went on a picnic we always used blankets, and sometimes we went to parks, or my grandma had a lake house so sometimes we would have picnics on the dock,” said Doni Nasr, a Spanish teacher. Picnic blankets can be found anywhere and most people own one that will suffice. The blanket or tablecloth can be used either to put on a picnic table or on the ground. Foods that are easy to bring but also taste fantastic are sandwiches, fruits, and snacks. From ham and cheese to peanut butter and jelly. Sandwiches should be prepared in advance and kept either in a tupperware container or a ziploc bag. If available, ice packs are good to use on hot days to keep
food fresh. Bringing bags of fruit is not extremely portable when on a picnic, so an alternative is to make fruit kabobs. The instructions are very simple and do not require many supplies. First, pick out three to four fruits, then take a wooden towel and push random assortments of fruit onto it. “I usually bring sandwiches or fruits, especially in the summer when it's fruit season, tropical fruits are really good,” said Workman. In addition to these foods, a snack that is a fan favorite is trailmix. Trail Mix is sold at practically every store and is also a snack that can be made, using an assortment of nuts and chocolates. Especially in Arizona, it is very important to hydrate while out in the sun. Plain water is perfect for a hot day, but to add some interest, infusing natural flavors is a great option. Infusing water only requires various fruits and a container for water. Other essentials for a successful picnic is silverware, plates and napkins. Ideal silverware and plate are plastic because they are easy to transport and will not break. Also for some picnic tunes, Spotify has a picnic playlist that has suitable songs for your picnic. “Picnics are a great way to relax and enjoy some company,” said Tricia Rousu, a sophomore. Lastly there are many picnic spots throughout Arizona, at local parks and other locations, but in reality having a picnic is possible anywhere, even in your own backyard.

Dutch Brothers was founded in Oregon in 1922 by dairy farmer brothers named Dane and Travis Boersma, or the Dutch Bros. The Dutch Bros. chain is one of the largest drive-thru coffee and beverage companies in the country. After starting out slow, the company now has over 200 locations. Dutch Bros hand crafts their coffee, which means that they roast it, blend it, and then ground it. Dutch Bros serves coffee, smoothies, frozen beverages, teas, and Blue Rebels, which gives the customer the choice to ask for any flavor. “My favorite drink to get is a Surprise Rebel,” said Katina, a junior. The Surprise Rebel is an infused customizable drink. It is ranked as highest customer satisfaction compared to any other coffee shop. “When I go there the people who work there are really loving and outgoing. When you go to Dutch, there is always loud music playing,” said Justin Zeigler, a senior. The new Dutch Bros will 4NICOLE NERI be moving closer to to Cave Creek. The location will be in Scottsdale, Grayhawk. This building will be the first to have a walk in Dutch Bros. The inside will be able to hold 50 people inside. Dutch Bros will have a dining area, a charging station for people’s computers, and a covered glass door that leads to a covered patio. “I’m excited for the new location and it being a little closer,” said Megan Sutton, a student at PVCC. Dutch Bros follows an Optimist’s Creed, which means having a good sense of mind, and that if someone has a good mind, then nothing can disturb their peace. It says to be happy to every person one may meet. The Creed also emphasizes valuing the success of others as well as your own, and instead of criticizing others, focus on bettering yourself, and remaining enthusiastic about a variety of situations. Dutch Bros.’s belief in making hand-made, affordable drinks, as well as living up to the values in their Creed each and every day, may be the reasons why the business has fared so well and why locations are continuously being built in the valley.

UYING fancy bottled water has been espe-
cially popular this year. During a blind taste test it was decided by price, marketing and taste ruled out a clear winner. In the blind taste test the waters that were used included Voss, Fiji, Evian, and Smart Water. The prices of these items varied from high of $3.95, to a low of $1.98. To begin the taste test, all waters were placed in pink identical cups labeled A, B, C, and D. Water A, which was Voss water was not a fan favorite by any means. Upon initial taste, the water tasted very mineral rich, and the aftertaste was not appealing at all. After swallowing the water, it left a bitter, and tangy trail behind. On a rather positive note though the packaging of Voss is very appealing. Then came water B, which was Smart Water, and was definitely better tasting. Smart Water had a less mineral rich and more pure taste then Voss. In addition Voss
water is an artesian water from Norway, and elements such as magnesium, calcium, chloride,

and potassium and also has 44 other unnamed dissolved solids in it. Where as is Smart Water, which is found in New York is mainly comprised of the same elements but in addition has electrolytes. Water C, otherwise known as Evian, was the best tasting water out of all of them. Evian water is from
the French Alps and is natural spring water. Although this water contains the same minerals as the others the water tasted extremely pure and lacked a mineral rich, bitter aftertaste. The
packaging on this water is extremely unique because it features a 3D like texture of mountain all around the top rim. Lastly Water D, which is Fiji water came in a close second to Evian. Fiji water also had a very pure taste, but a little more mineral rich taste than Evian. Since Fiji water is filtered through volcanic rock it does have a particularly unique taste that doesn't feel processed or manufactured. Despite the many great feature of wash water Evian Natural Spring Water is the clear winner based off of taste and packaging.

UNTER Canine is changing the lives of dogs and owners in Arizona by providing training programs that are targeted for dogs of all types, even the most unmanageable. Owner and training director, Chad Hunter’s main philosophy is that “a trained dog is a happy dog.” Hunter Canine was established three years ago, and was started based on the core passion for animals, especially dogs. Hunter’s mother was a dog trainer and he spent a majority of his life learning about animal behavior. As a child, Hunter competed in agility, obedience, and did 4-H competitions; which are similar to boy or girl scouts, except with dogs. The primary focus is for the handler to learn about the dog and how to care for it. “Helping people with their dogs is probably one of the most important things to me and that’s what helped drive my passion,” said Hunter. Hunter Canine offers a wide variety of classes from low to high skill levels, along with other services. The classes and services include obedience, training retreats, private lessons, swimming and dock diving, rattlesnake avoidance, lure coursing, agility and daycare. “As training director, I am responsible for overseeing that every dog that comes into us for training is obtaining and learning the skills they need, and that people are getting the results they want for their dog,” said Hunter. The training retreat option is for owners who would like their dogs to stay at Hunter Canine and be taught by their training professionals. Dogs are required to stay in the program for a minimum of three weeks, with a total cost of $1,500 Each day, dogs receive one-on-one training sessions, daily socialization, options of agility or swimming lessons, multiple follow up sessions, along with access to boarding and discounts on any future training services. Andrew Steinkohl, head trainer and instructor, has been working at Hunter Canine since the very beginning and is responsible for a large part of the training that goes on. “I like the amount of progress you are able to see with a dog in a short period of time, which I find very rewarding,” said Steinkohl. In addition to the training Hunter and Steinkohl do for other dogs, they also work on training their personal dogs for a sport called French Ring. This is a protection dog sport, that originated from France. Dogs involved in French Ring must have a high level of obedience to compete. French Ring competitions have a dog team, handler, and a person who acts as a decoy aggressor. The competition is designed to test whether a dog is usable for protection purposes. “ I am a very big competitor of police dog competitions. For me my passion is essentially training them, and every one of my dogs is trained in this discipline,” said Hunter. Trainers at Hunter Canine all share the same passion and love for dogs of all breeds and types.“I fell in love with the theory they [Hunter Canine] had and how they work with dogs, and their passion and drive for all dogs,” said Justine Jones, trainer. Hunter Canine has yet to refuse a dog from training classes and is willing to train even the most unruly dogs. “We can help you with any problems you have or any training you want. We work very hard to make sure everyone's happy with their experience, and if anybody needs any help that's why we're here,” said Steinkohl. Violet Sibold, 12, feels that her key role in at Hunter Canine is helping out with dogs who have a aggression towards children. “For dogs who are aggressive towards kids I can help out with them because I am experienced and know how to work with dogs,” said Sibold. Hunter Canine is a company that is dedicated to achieving success and has a passion for training dogs in a fun, yet structured environment. The facilities are located in Cave Creek, on 12 acres, with many different kennels, a swimming pool, and a 25,000 square foot grass training field. THE CACTUS SHADOWS PRESS

Everyone complains about the hot sumrs, and we all know what is coming in a couple of months, but right now the ather is the best we get all year, making it the perfect time to be outdoors. OR SHOULD I GO
KAYLA CHRISTENSON and KATE FINEGAN discuss whether or not it is worth it to travel for spring break.
SEE IT MY WAY
Here’s the thing about traveling, whether you go somewhere in-state, out of state, or even international: you’re still getting a taste of what the world has to offer. There are plenty of fascinating nooks and crannies in Arizona, from driving through winding roads around the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff to hiking up to an amphitheater in Sedona that’s far from the main trail. As grand as these experiences are and let’s be honest, nothing beats an Arizona sunset there is so much more to experience beyond our borders. Imagine treading through the snow to a waterfall or looking out over a river with the Grand Tetons reflected on its surface. Spending time with friends or family on the coast as a marine layer rolls in over the horizon. Go further, where flats, small cars, and roundabouts are the norm. Take a stroll along Normandy beach, whose soft sands bore witness to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 and when the Allies stormed the shoreline on D-Day, beginning on June 6, 1944. Granted, daring to travel internationally over spring break is a stretch if you have an insatiable curiosity, or, something called wanderlust (meaning a strong desire to travel). You’ll want to get lost in the streets of Venice and smell hazelnuts roasting as you head back to your hotel on the corner right beside a local café. A week isn’t nearly enough time to immerse yourself in another culture, whether it be a neighboring state or a nation across the sea. Yet it’s a start, and if you have the opportunity to travel outside of Arizona for spring break, I’ve got three words for you: go for it. There are challenges to traveling out of state, of course, and the heaviest price to pay is the price of traveling itself. Hotels average around $137 per night, and the average price to fill a tank of gas for a mid-size car is $43.52. Plane tickets are even more expensive, ranging anywhere from $400 to $1,400 or more from the States to Europe, depending on when you fly and how early or late you purchase a ticket. Top these prices off with food, clothes, fees, and transportation on the ground, and you’ve got yourself a steep price tag of a trip. That should not hinder a person from taking a trek outside of Arizona, especially with enough planning ahead and money saved. While we students are young, our parents might be willing to chip in; make it a family outing. An early graduation present. There are also travel scholarships available for those who wish to relate their travels to their studies. Despite financial or parental challenges, a fear of flying, or anything else that holds an individual back from leaving

may UNTER Canine is changing the lives of dogs and owners in Arizona by providing training programs that are targeted for dogs of all types, even the most unmanageable. “As training director, I am responsible for overseeing thatalmost every immediately, dog that comes into us for training is obtainestablished ing and first learning the where skills they need, and that people are when a soothing number getting the results they want for their dog,” said Hunter. girls danced draped in diaphanous The training retreat option is for owners who would like white cloth segued immediately into their dogs to stay at Hunter Canine and be taught by their a dance set to rapid rapping. training professionals. Killing it on stage and backstage
A dance show to end all dance shows. Veronica Blascoe, guest writer, reviews the last dance show of the year. THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE the start of the last dance show of the year, backstage is not as chaotic as one might expect. Dancers sit or sprawl in clusters, applying makeup or braiding each other’s hair; one girl, flat on her back groans as a friend forces her trembling leg high over her head. No one is frantically pacing or vomiting out their nerves in the corner, and truthfully, there would be little reason to do so. It is, to put it bluntly, a good show and is always a favorite staple of the Cactus Shadows school year, the latest dance show proves just as “en pointe” as ever. The show ran for three nights from May 4 to 6 at the Fine Arts Center. Saturday night, the last night Falcon Dance seniors performed, began with a speech by dance department chair Elissa Ericson. She honored all of the graduating seniors, with individual awards given to Krista Wyslomierski, Bianca Wright, and Taylor Peterson. Ericson also thanked dance teacher, Haley Vago, and recognized Elizabeth Lincoln for coming out of retirement to help out while she was on maternity leave in April. The dances themselves were their usual combination of technical proficiency and unexpected creativity, with special mention going to For Cory, choreographed by Cactus Shadows alumna Ayla Hargrove, which made stunningly inventive use of a long black cloth. The sheer variety of the show was

“I went back to Sevilla, Spain a year ago with Mrs. Raught and I completely fell in love again,” said Nasr.

Each class with Nasr is filled with a variety of teaching methods and activities. “I really enjoy the way Mrs. Nasr incorporates different pieces of evidence such as music, videos, and interviews rather than having us read from the textbook all the time,” said Kate Rosenbaum, a sophomore. In class, students are expected to be active participants, and be engaged in the classroom as well as the activities. Without a doubt in Nasr’s classroom, there is one thing that tends to haunt students every month which is the boleto. Each month, Nasr requires students to complete questions with articles of their choice. But, if there is anything students do best it is procrastination. Every
