SELF ANALYTICAL OVER the course of this semester, I learned that you have to stay focused and dedicated to something if you want it to turn out well. I have been working on the spreads every day after school to make sure they are designed well and have good stories and photos. However, I get distracted very easily while I’m working on the spreads, so I need to make sure I stay focused on the yearbook until it is finished. I am the Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook, so I had a big leadership position. I was not the best leader in showing the team leaders how to design to well and to the staff members on how to write better stories. There were also a few problems with the team leaders and the staff members not listening or not getting any of the necessary stories or photos that were required for the spreads. There were many instances in which there were no photos or stories for the spreads that were being designed, which caused a huge problem with the proofs. I learned a lot more about InDesign, Bridge, PhotoShop this year by working on the spreads and dividers. I know a lot more about the computer programs than I did last year. I have also been teaching the team leaders how to use InDesign. However, it has been difficult trying to get the team leaders to design spreads that look like they all belong in the same yearbook. That is something that should be focused on for the yearbook staff next year. THERE were a lot of problems with the senior ads this year. At first no one wanted to buy them, and when we finally did sell enough of them, the senior ads editor did not pat enough attention to the spreads she was designing and there was a whole page blank. In addition to this, there was placeholder text on every page. Something like this should not be overlooked in future yearbooks. ONE of the journalism ethics that I learned this year was to stay determined. It was hard working on all of the spreads and to make sure everyone gets their work completed on time. But if you want to finish all of the spreads and make them look good, you have to keep working until the spreads are completed. THIS class has taught me how to become a more responsible, dedicated focused student and staff member. I will use these skills in the future as a leader for any career I choose to follow.

MY most significant pieces of work from this semester are the dividers on page 6-7, 2223, 38-39, 46-47, 64-65, 86-87, 108-109, 122-123, 194-195. The purpose of the dividers is to show what section of the yearbook students are looking at. Other good spreads that I have designed are the opening and closing, as well as the staff pages. These pages gave the book an overall feeling right when students open up the book. THE hardest part of creating the dividers was thinking of an idea for the spreads. We had the list of all of the spreads that were in the book, but we just didn’t know how to depict what the divider was about. To find inspiration for the spreads, Alysa and I looked through inspiration books until we found an idea we really liked: taking a photo that demonstrates the word on the divider (passionate, kind, etc.) then making the photo black and white, excluding the person who was depicting the divider. For example, there was a photo of a passionate dancer on the passionate divider. IT was difficult to find enough photos for the opening and closing spreads, but after I find all of the photos and took some from the spreads, it was easy to put them into place and crop them so they were all the same size. THE part that I like the most about these spreads are the black and white photos on the dividers with the colorful stripes, and the large number of photos that was on the opening and closing. I am very pleased with the way the yearbook turned out and I think it is one of the best ones we have made yet.

A piece that could still use work is the spread 110-111. The spread had speech and debate, cross country, rec sports, and the sound guy, Michael Chmura. The orange team was the team that was in charge of getting the stories and the photos. However, the stories were very short and not that interesting. There were also hardly any pictures on the page and the first time we opened the spread was on the night that we had to upload the final proofs. I was very sick that night which made things even worse. Alysa also left that night so I didn’t have anyone to help me edit the page. The original page didn’t have good design. WHEN I opened the spread for the first time, I didn’t know what to do with it so I placed the photos and stories in random places until I figured out a layout that wasn’t as bad as the first layout. After that, I worked on other spreads that were also due that night, and I forgot to go back and revise the bad spread. It was almost ten o clock when I opened the spread again and we were all very tired and wanted to go home so we just uploaded the spread as it was. I learned that in order to complete something that is worthy of being published, you have to stay on top of the progress that is made every step of the way. If I had focused on that spread for longer, I would have finished before the proof night and we wouldn’t have been at school for so long.

REFLECTI

N3

THIS is the best picture I took this year. I like this picture because it looks like a picture that would be on a Christmas card. Even though it doesn’t look like a photo that would be in the yearbook because it is not academics or sport, I think it is very nice. There is good composition and the picture is amazing. I took this picture in Colorado over the winter break. It took me a long time to get the picture perfect, but after I fiugred out how to adjust the exposure, I took the picture without it being blurry. I also like that the tree is in the perfect position for the rule of thirds.

REFLECTI

N4

I was an asset to the staff this semester because I was the Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook. I was always working on the spreads that the team leaders have designed. I also always stayed at school very late, especially on deadline nights. On normal school days, I got out at 11:30, and worked on the spreads until 3 or 4. On the first deadline night, I stayed until 10 p.m. and I stayed at school until midnight on the second deadline night. On the final deadline night, I stayed at school until midnight making sure all of the pages were uploaded correctly. I also took all of the spreads on a thumb drive and work on them from home. I am very committed to this yearbook, I am glad that I could make it the best one ever!

REFLECTI

N5

WE have run into many problems this semester. One of the problems we encountered was submitting the portrait pages without any of the links, causing a lot of confusion with the proofs. When we thought we were submitting the spreads to receive another proof, we really submitted the proofs and got verification proofs. However, Sara offered to pay for all of the pages to be reproofed, so that problem was resolved. ANOTHER hardship this year was that many, if not all, of the team leaders were inexperienced with InDesign. Because of this, it was harder for Alysa and me to finalize the proofs in time for the deadline. We stayed at school until midnight way more than we should have because we had so much work to complete before uploading. I learned that you have to ask for help if you ever need it, and that it requires persistence and determination to get the best work. We would have encountered a big problem if we did not talk to Rob about the portrait pages, but since we emailed him we got another set of proofs. And in order to finish the team leader’s spreads I had to stay at school and work on the spreads until they were finished to my liking. OVERALL, I feel like I handled the situations well. We contacted out yearbook representative, Rob, and he gave us re-proofs so we were able to submit those pages at our liking. The spread situation was not handled as well as the portrait pages because it took me longer to finish the spreads than I would have liked, but we finished the book, and that’s all that matters.

REFLECTI

N6

MY greatness weakness this year was being an effective leader. I found it hard to inspire the staff members to write their stories and take their photos for their pages. It is difficult to relate to the staff members because they don’t understand as much about the yearbook and how important it is to finish their work on time and get the necessary photos. For example, on page 30-31, there were only two stories writer and two photos for the whole spread. This made is difficult to design the pages for the proof deadline. If I had been able to connect to the team leaders and their staff members, this problem would have been avoided. It is important for the Editor-in-Chief, the team leaders, and the staff members to all be on the same page and understand and communicate with each other. Without communication, it is impossible to design an award winning yearbook.

REFLECTI

N8

I have grown a lot this year in many ways. My leadership skills have vastly improved, as well as my design skills. Before this year, I was very quiet and I did not know how to effectively communicate with other staff members. But this year I figured out how to be an effective leader, while also being friends with the staff members. I made sure all of the team members finished their spreads on time and got all of the photos that were needed for the spreads. I also advanced my design skills by editing all of the team leader’s spreads and making the necessary adjustments. MY writing this year has also vastly improved. I had to edit and rewrite stories for some of the spreads that I edited. While I worked on these I made sure to maintain the rules of journalistic writing. I also focused on keeping the story interesting so students will read the whole story and not just look at the pictures. I have learned a lot of helpful information that will assist me with whatever career I choose to follow in the future.

MAD to the bone

On June 18th, 1942, superstar Paul McCartney was born. On that same day 56 years later, another superstar was born. Her name was Madeline Amelia Jones. 17 years later, Maddie Jones is a senior at Cactus Shadows High School. Jones is the Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook and has met all of her closest friends through the journalism course. The four friends Jones considers her “hoes” are Emma Kritzstein, Alysa Velez, Mia Valenza, and Rees Bixler. Kritzstein, Velez, and Valenza are a part of the yearbook staff with Jones, while Bixler is a staff member for the CSPress newspaper. “I had known Maddie for many years as my unassuming neighbor and I’d never thought much of her until we became really good friends in eighth grade. I learned that

she was emotional, funny, and always stuck to her own guns,” said Velez. Jones is known for her strong sense of humor, and is considered the jester of the hoes. “Maddie is honestly the funniest person I know, I never laugh as hard with anyone else,” Valenza said. Not only is Jones very funny, she is also very stylish and beautiful. “Madeline Jones has the best sense of humor at Cactus Shadows and looks the best in a pirate hoe shirt,” Bixler said. Even while balancing a very busy schedule, Jones is still able to be a great friend for her crew. “Maddie is my best friend in the whole wide world,” Kritzstein said. “The world would be a much darker place without her. I’m glad I got the chance to meet and befriend her.”

MEMBERS of the Nest encourage the football team as well as each other

were appointed to be the Nest leaders this year. “The team knows how passionate we all are, and how we all enjoy being there cheering on the team, winning or losing,” said Danahy. Matt Sill, a senior and varsity football player, enjoys the passion, dedication, and support of the Nest on game day. “It makes everyone on the team more rowdy, and creates more positive energy for the game among the teammates. Everyone on the team was nervous for the first home game and no one wanted to disappoint the Nest, but then we walked out of the locker room and heard all the cheering. It really made the team feel like we could win, and we did,”

said Sill. Every game, the Nest leaders guide the entire student section in a chant to cheer on the team to a hopeful victory. “The ‘I believe that we will win’ chant gets me pumped because it is at the beginning of the game, so I hear it and it gets everyone on the field more excited to play,” said Sill. “The energy reflects off of the Nest and the football players. The players will put their hands up to the Nest, signaling for us to be louder,” said Rodenburg. CURIOSITY BREEDS CREATIVITY, which is precisely the driving force behind the literary magazine. Many artists and musicians submit original work each year, but only 20 percent make it into the book. “Just because a piece gets accepted, doesn’t mean it will get published,” said senior editor-in-chief Samantha Kotowski. In the literary magazine, censorship is minimal because many students freely write about their experiences or opinions. “I think people create art because it’s an outlet to express themselves that’s unique to their personalities,” said Kotowski. One particular student who has been involved with the book for four years is Riley Roads, a senior. Roads began making art as a young girl and has since been published in the literary magazine three times. She was first published her junior year and her usual medium is acrylic paint. “I’m trying to branch out and start working with more watercolor,” said Roads. She is excited to experiment with a variety of mediums because she is curious to test her abilities. “I wanted to submit because my friend, Lizzy, was submitting pictures of me and I just kind of went for it,” said Roads. It is nice for the artists to exercise their freedom of speech and their unique ideas, and Roads encourages everyone to submit. “The best part about being published is having your stuff printed in a book and seeing that the final product looks really good,” said Roads. story by mia valenza

DETERMINED “Everyone is so determined to win their competition so tensions are high and it’s so competitive but so fun.”

Breakaway Leadership Team, or BLT, is a club full of students from different backgrounds and grades that are brought together to learn how to be leaders. Through their actions and mindsets, they search ways to be positive role models to others. “Everyone in the class is really diverse,” said Carlos Paoletti, a senior and BLT member. “You have a bunch of different people and different social classes and we all come together and try to come up with solutions to problems we see on campus.” A friend convinced Paoletti to come to a BLT meeting his junior year and he has been going ever since. “It’s whoever we can see being a leader and helping BLT grow into something bigger and help involve other kids,” said Paoletti.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY

“BLT has opened up my eyes to involving more kids in a lot of things, because I never really noticed how kids may feel. For me it changed how I view those kids and how I want to help those kids bring a community to our school,” said Zoe Monroe, a senior and BLT member. story by korie kerr

GOTTA BLAST

“ONCE YOU GO TRACK, YOU NEVER GO BACK,” varsity track runner, Kyle Palmer, a junior, said. Palmer ran track since 7th grade and is now in his junior year. He was motivated by his friends and family and had many goals to be successful in his events. He ran the 400 meters and 100 meters. Track was special to Palmer because everyone was a family and they had a great time, while improving themselves to reach their goals. Junior, Sean Wright, was part of the track team for five years participating in the high jump. His motivation was to get the school record of jumping 6’8 in the high jump. To do this, Wright worked with his coach one on one. He says, “Track for me was more following in the footsteps of my dad because he was in track as a very successful jumper. He really pushed me to strive for success in what I do on the track.” Practice is Monday through Friday from 3 to 4:30. Sophomore, Michael Marchica, ran hurdles and the 200 meters sprint. He worked to improve by practicing sprints and hurdle drills. His goal was to make it to state. Juniors Max Solberg and Dominique Lopez, have dedicated themselves to track. Lopez was involved in shot put and discus. She was motivated to get her best personal record this year and be the best by senior year. While Solberg said, “my motivation this year is my teammates. If I work hard, hopefully that work ethic will spread throughout the team”. His events include running the mile and two mile. All five of these track stars are motivated for different reasons. They are all hustling to accomplishing their goals before the end of the season and before graduation. story

Cashman has been a member of the track team for two years. “The hardest part about the triple jump is definitely transitioning between each jump while keeping keeping in stride,” explained Cashman. 4 HURDELER AND FRESHMAN, Jensen Gomez, races the clock at a track invitaional at North Canyon High School. Jensen ran the 100 meter hurdles and was the second leg on the 4 by 100 meter relay during track season. “The hardest thing about hurdling is taking 3 steps between each hurdle, which is 8.5 meters,” Gomez said. photos by lifetouch

CAITLIN BICKLE STARTED THIS SEASON ON FIRE. The six foot one sophomore has been playing basketball since she was five, and was a member of this year’s varsity team. “I played varsity last year, which was great but also stressful because I was a freshman in varsity,” said Bickle. Having made the team as a freshman, Bickle is recognized as an up-and-coming powerhouse. “I told her yesterday that I would be scared if I had to play against her. She’s a monster at the game, man,” said Morgan Easterbrook, a senior and fellow teammate. As a freshman, she had a successful season, averaging 14 points per game and scoring a total of 435 for the season. Bickle may be tall, and expected to only play the role of a post player, but she has proven otherwise. She made a total of 23 three-point shots last season. That high an amount of three point shots is normally expected of a guard, making her ability even more unexpected. “Caitlin is a gifted and dedicated basketball player. She is a positive member of the team,” Michael Siwek, athletic director, said. Bickle did not just play for school. She also participated in club basketball during the summer. “I have two coaches, a club coach like outside of school, as well as a school coach. Ben Wade is my club coach and Richie Willis is my school coach,” said Bickle. As a sophomore, Bickle already received multiple scholarship offers to play basketball. GCU, for example, offered her a full ride scholarship for basketball. “She has offers from every school, I think she is 13th in the nation for her grade, which is really good for a sophomore,” said Easterbrook.
