Self-Analytical Evaluation

Yearbook has taught me a lot over the past few months. I met great people who showed me

how the class works. All together I have done two main stories and four mods. They have all been

turned in on time in a neat manner and I always put my heart into every piece of work. All together

I would say that this semester I have always been on top of my pieces and have always made sure I knew what I was doing and how I was going to accomplish them. I work together with my team and

help them get their stories together so that all of our pieces are at the best they can be. Overall I am a hard worker that gets my work done in a neat and orderly fashion.

When we chose who got what story, I always gave my opinion to who I thought would be best

suited for the specific story. I made sure that everyone could play to his or her strengths. Personally I am a person that wants things to be the best of their ability. During the process of the interview

stages, I always made sure I had at least twenty questions in order to get the full story out of the

people I was interviewing. For example, I made sure during my Young Life mod that I asked exciting and happy questions. This was to help them get in the mood for their love for the club.

Overall my teamwork skills were very expressed this semester in a positive way. For example,

the first deadline night, my team was the last team their. This was not do to the fact that we were not

doing anything. However my team leader had not finished the spread. So being the fantastic team that we are, we stayed with her until about ten at night so that she would not be alone. Another example is another deadline night my team was at the school until about eleven at night in order to fully complete our spread so that it could be the best it could be. I am fully dedicated to the team and also the class and work my hardest to produce the best piece that I can.

I help everyone in the class. Whether it be taking pictures during my coverage week for teams

in need, helping out with captions for the editors who already have so much on their plate. Along with all this I also am doing the Index this year which will be a big project to add to my plate of responsibilities.

I helped write the commercial for yearbook as well and with club pictures. All together I have learned so much from this class and it has taught my how to be more reasonable.

Yearbook is a class where slacking is not an option. Deadlines come fast and you must work

hard in order to get them completed. Everyone in the class must work together or everyone gets held back and you do not want to be the person that holds everyone back. I have learned to be organized

and work together in a team in order to accomplish goals. I know when to get things done and at what level the need to be done at. I have become more focused and dedicated thanks to this class. I have learned so much that has taught me to be a better person.

Reflection #1 Overall I feel that my best piece of work has had to be my main story on Bailey Brown who is Floyd the Falcon. This main story tells everyone who Floyd has been for the past few years. It tells about her favorite and least favorite moments and what it was like to be in the suit. The story gives us an insight into her thoughts and feelings and how she does what she does. It is a very interesting article (if I do say so myself) that gives readers an insight into the life of the beloved falcon. Though sometimes being in the suit may be a struggle she stills shows a positive side to everything that she did. This was by far the most difficult story that I had to complete. The main problem for this story was the fact that the falcon is anonymous and does not want anybody to know. However I figured this would be a good way to put her out in public seeing as this is her last year at this school. Once I was able to find out who she was, this is where the real trouble came in. She was very hesitant at first to allow herself to be revealed so this took a little convincing but in the end I feel that it worked out really well. This was her chance to tell everyone who she is and why being the falcon is an awesome experience. As well as interviewing the falcon herself, I also interviewed Mrs. Bender who runs student council. She is in love with the love falcon and everything it stands for. He is the epitome of school spirit and really fires up the kids. At first the piece was very choppy and had a very very rough start do to the fact that I had to find out who she was and how I would be able to get in contact with her. Along the way I learned what it is like to have to actually go out and put effort into your story and how not everything will go your way. You have to work hard in order to be the best you can be and make your work the best that it can be. My favorite part about this piece is that it truly captures what it is like in that suit. How much effort it takes in order to prepare to be in the suit. It truly tells the honest story and how it is not all fun and games. I learned so much from this story and it truly showed me how hard you have to actually work in order to make it good. This is one of my stories that I am most proud of because it was well worth it in the end and I have great pride over it. I feel it is my best work from this semester and truly shows my work capability.

Reflection #2 I feel that anything can use work and anything can always get better no matter what. If I had to

choose something that I could have worked harder on, it would have to be my Mad Lib about Student Council during homecoming. Overall I feel that the concept was smart but it could have been much

cleaner and done better. It was one of my stories that felt more of a rush in order to meet deadline. Many things about this story could be changed. However I did learn a lot from this spread that allowed me to grow and see what works for me and what does not.

This story in particular was an absolute struggle. The concept of the piece is pretty straight

forward. However coming up with a way to tell the story was difficult. Many ideas ran through my

mind but they were already taken or would not fit with the topic of the story. I had never done a Mad Lib before and thought that it would add some creativity to our spread so that the whole thing was

just not mods and pictures. This story comes with ups and downs meaning that it is a good mod but also a bad one. Normally for a mod or story you interview three people. For this one, I only did one. So that was a setback when creating this story.

The girl I had write the tiny story did a fine job but I should have asked her to go more in

Reflection #3 During my time during this semester I took a lot of photos. Most of them were terrible and I can admit that. I have a few that I feel were pretty great and I am truly proud of them. Out of all the pictures that I took this year my favorite by far was the picture of the bus driver reading the school newspaper outside of his bus. You can really see how interested he is on the news of the school. The whole picture really helps show his interests.

That day I remember taking a lot of photos and this one was my personal favorite. Immediately

from the photo you can see the bus yellow color really pop in this photo. However your eyes really draw to the actual bus driver. Casually he is reading the newspaper, and all you can think about, is wondering what he is thinking. Now this photo does not have all the “required elements that a photo should have. Overall I feel that this photo is a great contribution to the yearbook.

This photo has beautiful lighting since it was just early morning and the sky was a nice grey/

blue color. I am proud of this photo more than anything because I was able to capture a rare moment

depth and really describe her feelings and actions during this stressful week. However I basically

and see how interested he was and how happy he was to read the paper. The newspaper is very in-

settled with what she gave me and went with it. Content was it was not the greatest but overall I still very annoying. However it looked great on the page when it was done. For that I feel good about it.

Overall the story had good values to the spread but lacked others. I wish that I could be proud

of this piece but sadly it is dry and kind of dull. The idea was great but I could have executed it better. This helps me for the future however and will help me grow as a writer and help me come up with

bigger and better ideas for my mods. The piece could use some touch ups and it should be longer. It does look good on the page and fits right in and works well together with the other mods and Main

story and for that I am happy with it. Overall it is what it is and I am glad that I was able to work on this and grow from it.

There are many reasons why I feel that this picture is wonderful. I am proud of this picture and

I am glad that it is being used in one of the spreads. It shows people that do not even attend our school reading the paper and enjoying it. The picture will be a good addition to the yearbook. Overall the picture is a great visual and tells a tiny story. The photo is the one that I am most proud of and really shows off my photography skills and abilities.

Reflection #4 This semester I would consider myself a big asset to the team. I am not on the level as the editor and chief. However I do feel that since this being my first year in this class. I have been able to prove myself as a hard worker that is willing to help with anything. I am willing to help with captions, and help people find information if necessary. I try my hardest in class and out. I put 110% into all my work. This year I decided to take a chance and take an editor position and take the job as Index Editor. This job did not come with any perks and honestly sounded dreadful. But I really want to have my name remembered in this class so I decided to take the position. As well as that I have really stepped my game up when it comes to teamwork. I always participate when my team needs help and help them get there stuff together. I give new and exciting ideas that will help create a new and more exciting yearbook. Yearbook has taught me to be a more confident and more organized person. I have gotten better time management skills which has really helped me be an asset this year to the rest of the staff. During late nights my team was always the last team to be there. No matter what we would get our work done and make sure that it was the best that it could be. I would be there from 2 to at least 10:30. Every time however you become much closer to the people around you which was a great experience. Overall I feel that I have been a great contributor to the other staff members. I am always willing to help them if they need something. I always put my input in and make sure that everything is done to its best ability. I pump my friends up and want them to succeed just as much as I do. I can honestly say that the next few years in yearbook will be a blast. I will help everyone in need and hope to gain knowledge along the way. I hope to gain better leadership roles and teach others how to do the things that I learned this year.

Reflection #5 This semester was definitely not an easy one. Yearbook kicked my butt and really opened my eyes up to how hard I was going to need to work. My major problem was the fact that I am a very shy. So going into classrooms and getting people to interview was the most difficult part for me. It may not seem like a big issue but for me it was difficult to ask to take someone out of their classroom. However yearbook has opened me up in new ways and I am not as afraid to call people out of their classes. I learned that people are not going to be as mean or rude as you may think. Getting turned down by a teacher is not as big of a deal as I has previously thought. If these problems rise again, I just have to remember that it is not that big of a deal and that it is ok to be shy at first but soon you just have to suck it up. I am getting better and talking and meeting new people is actually very fun and you really get to know people. Overall in the future I will be able to handle it much better. My greatest weakness publication specifically would have to be my photos. I am not a photographer in any way and am still figuring out how to get the perfect shot. I can take a decent photo every once in awhile. However I miss perfect moments that could be photographed which is truly not a good thing. I need to figure out my angles and shots. The way photos should be taken and not just in one place. I need to move more and really get in there face if I need to. Photography will be something I will work on. To overcome this I can practice photography outside of my coverage week and really try to perfect my way of taking pictures. I can ask for more tips and tricks to taking the good shot. What I will do is move around more, get better angles from high and below. Really pay attention to where the light is coming from and really get that perfect shot. Next semester I will really try on my photos and not be afraid to look stupid in front of people. Yearbook has changed me for the better. ww

STUDYING FOR THE SATS AND ACTS is a huge time consuming commitment that most juniors and seniors make. These challenging tests come around once a year and evaluate everything students have learned throughout their academic career. Students taking the tests begin preparing as soon as possible. “I began studying a month before the test and I studied probably an hour every two or three days of the week,” said senior Liza Murray. DRAMA club students imitate their inspirations.

“JENNIFER LAWRENCE inspires me because she pursued her passion even when she knew it was a long shot,” said Maggie Ewens, a sophomore. “I am inspired by EMMA WATSON because she’s not afraid to speak her mind, to be herself, and she’s a proud feminist,” said Madelyn Lever, a junior.

1 BEING GREAT AT A HOBBY does not lead someone to greatness. Passion is a key element that is needed in order for their to be an outcome. National Art Society is composed of passion and creativity. Each member holds a different level of passion for the specific type of art that they practice. They each bring a new element to the club no matter how long they have been a member. “This is my second year in National Art Honor Society,” said Elizabeth James, a senior. “We have a lot of fun. We do a lot of arts and craft and stuff, but we mostly hang out.” President Riley Roads, a senior, brings a foundation to the society. Each week, there is a new project for the members to work on. Some have meaning behind them “Its nice to hold responsibility for a club involving art. Art is fun,” said Roads. However, some members do not just make projects for themselves. Art Honors Society and ceramics classes made bowls for an empty bowl project. Students created bowls that would later be sold to purchase soup for the homeless. “We love doing it every year. It’s one of my favorite projects,” said Roads. Story by Kimberly Paoli

JUNIORS and seniors discuss the difficulties of studying for the ACT’s and the SAT’s STUDYING FOR THE SATS AND ACTS is a huge time consuming commitment that most juniors and seniors make. These challenging tests come around once a year and evaluate everything students have learned throughout their academic career. Students taking the tests begin preparing as soon as possible. “I began studying a month before the test and I studied probably an hour every two or three days of the week,” said senior Liza Murray. Before beginning to study, falcon students go out and buy either an SAT or ACT study book. Just the sight of this thick book scares most students away, but it is a must have for studying for the tests. It is difficult to prepare

for these tests, but either going to Starbucks with some friends or locking the door and studying for hours does not matter, students need to find a way to study. The amount of stress these tests give students keeps them on their toes by continuing to keep them busy. The tests come right in the middle of school, while all the homework assignments, quizzes, and tests continue so everyone remains even more stressed out. “I need a quiet place to study so I probably study in my room, alone,” said senior Gregory Burgess. SIBLINGS BY CHANCE, FRIENDS BY CHOICE

FRIENDSHIPS A WORLD APART

JOSIE Teegardin, a junior, and Drake Teegardin, a freshman, talk about their sibling relationship in school and out.

EXCHANGE students from China students come to Cactus Shadows for a new experience

Josie and Drake Teegardin are incredibly similar. They both love adventures and trying new things. “He’s a daredevil and I am too, but like, he does it to the point of insanity. Like, I would jump off a cliff, but he would go to the highest cliff,” said Josie. Despite Josie being a junior and Drake being a freshman, they managed to get in Ms. Gum’s fifth hour Speech class. These siblings were actually quite happy to be in class together. “They sit next to each other, and they chose to sit next to each other, which I thought was really cool. They seem like they’re really close, like, really supportive of each other, and so it’s really nice to see,” said Gum. Not only that, but they enjoy spending time with each other. Drake sees his sister as, “Someone to hang out with... [We like to play] ping-pong and soccer in the garage.” They also take frequent trips to the lake on their boat where they get the chance to go wake-boarding and wake-surfing together. LET’S BECOME UNIFIED Best Buddies

Pros

Cons

KYLE KELLEHER

OUT with the old in with the new, Best Buddies was replaced with Unified to involve more students.

Unified

In Best Buddies, you are paired with one other student and get to make a new close friends. It helped in the creation of a new and improved club that allows for more students to participate in.

Unified is combined with Best Buddies and sponsored by Special Olympics. “I like it there are a lot of changes and a lot more people are participating,” said Caylie Reese, a sophomore.

Best Buddies was a great program to start with and lead many students to the new program Unified. “It means that we are all coming together to be friends and support a good cause,” said Megan Rose, a sophomore.

Special Olympics allows more students and “athletes” to participate. “It pairs special educational students paired up with students doing a sport and allows them to participate and feel more involved,” said Allison Holt, a sophomore.

Best Buddies could only allow a certain amount of students because not everyone can be paired with another student.

Unified is a new club so the President is not entirely certain of the activities and events planned for this year.

The students and leader were not organized and did not plan any activities. “I love Best Buddies but there was to much stuff every month and no way to follow and keep up with it,” said Reese Parfet, a junior.

The students are not paired up with another student. This does not allow them to be as comfortable with other students and have that one close friend.

AS STUDENTS pick up the newspaper in the middle of every month, they are not really aware of what the staff goes through while creating the paper that the students hold in their hands. Kaley Dodd, a sophomore, states “the stress from newspaper feels like a mountain on my back because the work is just piled on and on”. Even though the stress is piled on, the production days are a completely different atmosphere. Ashley Wong, a junior, shares that production days are usually “very quiet and everyone works hard”. Wong states that “production days seem to be way more stressful for editors”. Even though all staff work on skimming the articles for grammatical errors, the editors have to make sure that everything is set and stone. Some of the errors brought on by this day

Dear Falcon Freshman,

Since practice makes perfect, Lindsey Murphy has some advice for that. “It sucks sometimes but stick with it. Also, don’t try to do harder workouts than what you can handle.” Regarding the start of a race, senior Jake Lockett has some helpful hints. He says, “Don’t get trampled. I have been trampled. Don’t get trampled. That’s the best advice I could possibly give. Do not get trampled.”

Last but not least, Erika Richwagen has some excellent advice on an overall attitude that will get you through the season.

Jake Lockett, 12,

“Just to take everything like a grain of salt because, just because you have one bad race doesn’t mean that that’s the way your season or your whole cross country career is gonna go. Everyone has good days and everyone has bad days and if you’re gonna continue on the team, just realize that you will get through, whether you think you will or not.”

Dodd shares that “sometimes it gets really hard because I don't know how to edit the pages yet due to it being my first year in newspaper. Also, sometimes it can be hard to stick with one writing style because your mind starts to wonder”. Within a few weeks of the announcement, the exchange students arrived with their excited hosts awaiting their arrival. “It was so very exciting and I was so nervous.
