Re: Application for Staff Writer position Dear Buzzfeed, My name is Sara Windom and I have been the Style Editor of the CSPress for two years. Aside from this, in the 2017-18 year, I will be the Editor-In-Chief. I have two years experience in a journalism environment, learning how to write in a journalistic style, how to tell a story through a photograph as well as using InDesign and Photoshop. While I have upheld significant design within the style spreads including drawings and personalized headlines done on Photoshop, eye-catching sidebars, and collages made of magazine clippings, I also have outside experience as I design flyers for shows and

self analytical evaluation

Over the course of this year, I have learned so many useful tools, especially ones that will help me as I further my career as a journalist. This semester, I gained so much knowledge in the way of design skills. With photos lacking on the style pages for a few issues this semester, I had more room to test out artistic visions. For example, I had never thought about making a collage for a page, or designing a custom headline font in photoshop. Over the course of this entire year my photoshop skills have improved significantly, thanks to the fact that I have grown an interest in professional(ish) photography. In the future I plan on using these skills even more often, as I do not plan on stopping taking photoshoots. And because I am now the Editor In Chief of the newspaper and Design Editor of Literary Magazine, I will be putting my newly discovered design skills to the test much more often. What I need to improve on most is finding the right people to interview. When assigned an article that requires interviews, unless there are specific people I need to talk to for the story, often times even without realizing it, I will simply interview the people I am comfortable with. But, by talking to the right people and discovering who would make a given story that extra something would make my piece incredible. This year I have not had much in the way of interviews to conduct, but next year I hope to, so I can push my boundaries a bit more and in turn, help the paper be even better. Deadlines. To many on the staff, deadlines make you wince, give you the chills, but really have never had a problem with them. Here and there, of course, everyone struggles with deadlines, I am no exception. I have had interviews put in at the last minute because a teacher would not respond immediately, but only on one or two occasions. I am generally very good at managing my time when necessary, and I know my limits. I do not sign up for more work than I know I can handle. Sometimes I slack off and sign up for too few articles, which I hope to change in the future and set an example amongst next year’s staff, but overall I am proud of myself in the way I manage due dates. As far as teamwork goes, I would say I am quite the team player. Last year, I barely spoke to anybody in Newspaper. Now, almost all of my friends

at least one publication, and many of sest friends are editors for the CSI find that I am not always the best at ng there is a problem when there is ut when a staffer or an editor comes with an issue, I do my best to help hrough it. For example, when Olivia ving trouble finding a font she liked ory about burgers on her page, she o me for advice. Once we talked it decided to help her out by going onto hop and hand drawing her headline like ketchup pouring out of a bottle. aside, whenever somebody is having ty writing a photo caption or coming h a headline, all the editors pitch in loud. I think one of the most imporngs within a publication is teamwork endship. If everyone works together, per not only benefits, but it is imt for those who work together each get along well. Getting along well riters motivates them to write great s and take amazing pictures and the an be said for editors. If staff gets great with editors makes the ediant to make their pieces look beautien laid out. I think this year because f the writers and editors were within me grade, many had other classes toso there was less of a separation bethe two roles in the classroom. And se many of us are friends with each he teamwork is already there. All that d change about this year is editors listo other editors. When I doubled up y Editor, it opened my eyes to how other editors disregard blatant misAs Copy Editor, I was trying to help correct pages to make the paper

look outstanding. Many would see my comments on indenting, or fixing a simple comma splice and the pages would go unchanged, even after I gave their edited pages back and discussed the problems with them. As a team, I do this to better the newspaper, not to make them feel bad about not catching something. They should want to correct these issues rather than turn the other cheek and pretend they had no idea there were problems come the printed issue. During semester one, we dealt quite a lot with plagiarism as one particular staffer happened to plagiarize several pieces. Luckily, we did not happen to run any of the stolen articles, but it was a very close possibility. This semester, I would rather focus on ethics in a different light. In recent years especially, there has been a rise in fake news, or really more just a rise of fear because of it. Like witchcraft in Salem or the Red Scare in the 1920s, the panic of fake news has become apparent, but real publications are losing credibility because of it. A new bill awaiting approval from the Governor, SB 1384, is trying to give students their First Amendment rights back. I was lucky enough to attend two meetings to pass the bill at the Senate and the House. Upon its presentation by Senator Yee, it was clear many Senators were unsure of SB 1384 because

they did not believe that high school journalists would handle the bill professionally, and students would misuse this new right as a way to lie and bias stories as they see fit with no consequences. It became evident that many outsiders do not realize that even high school newspapers follow the journalism code of ethics. I learned that many of the people voting on the bill that would affect us directly had no faith in our ability to practice true journalism. While many did vote in favor of it, it still hurt to realize that Senators and House Representatives were weary on our ethics. Ethics are so important, and if not followed correctly, devalue a paper’s name. I believe we should spend even more time covering ethics in the coming years, especially after having a student attempt to plagiarize, and with a new bill granting us more freedoms, we need to make sure the power goes unabused. This semester I was quite dedicated to the paper. I wrote an article that unfortunately went unpublished on the Spanish Mystery Night, in which I bombarded Mrs. Raught mid-lunch because she would not respond to my emails. Before that, Mrs. Nasr was my first choice, but she too decided to ignore me. I am also more comfortable in my photography and sidebar skills recently, which I believe makes me an asset. My design skills have been heavily seen in the past few issues, even on other pages, like the Road Trip Playlist for Travel or the Summer Playlist for Spotlight. Another asset is that I am realistic. I know when things will and will not get finished, and during the April Issue when I was missing two or three 400 word articles, I had to make do with what I had. I designed a giant drawing of a girl in a swimsuit for one piece, then went out on campus during lunch to do a last minute Man on the

Street. Had I not done that, I believe I would have had to cut the page completely. Other than just writing, photographing and designing, I have also stayed after school, come in early and skipped classes to get necessary things done. This semester, I picked up the paper and brought it early to be passed out and brought and set up a newspaper rack for us to put old issues on outside. It has only been up for a week or so, but it is a big hit. Even the day I set it up people were already coming to pick up issues they had missed. I had very few hardships this semester, but there is always the challenge of writers not getting things done for my page. Because Style is generally a ‘fluffy’ section, I think when writers procrastinate and then prioritize which things to get done first, Style articles get pushed to the back of the pile. While I can usually help them out or manage without the piece, it is always hard dealing with an article expected to be there. One for instance, was supposed to discuss tricks and tips for prom. It was one of the only prom pieces in the paper, and the only one on my page. It went undone, along with several other articles for my page, which was

disappointing. However, I did learn how to fill up the missing spots on my pages without it looking absolutely disastrous. I also dealt with the difficulty of dealing with my articles going unpublished. I wrote two articles during an issue that I thought I had done such a good job on. While other pieces were not as strong as mine were published. I was upset, not a single thing I contributed to was published in the issue. One of my articles finally made it in the paper for the May Issue, but the other, that I ran around conducting interviews, sending mass emails, annoying teachers for pictures and finding out the story, will never be seen by my peers. It was hard to deal with, but I

overcame it. When writing the unpublished article, a story on Spanish Mystery Night, I believe I briefly conquered my greatest weakness: interviews. I will admit it, I am introverted, I am quiet, I am sometimes shy, but when necessary I will overcome these habits to find a story. A year ago, a sophomore on the staff, I never would have believed I would be rushing into a teacher’s classroom during lunch to get a comment because they would not return my emails. I would not have believed that when nothing was finished for my page that I would on-the-spot race to lunch and conduct a Man on the Street. Sometimes I am afraid to talk to people, but I have slowly been coming more and more out of my shell, and I believe that being in newspaper has helped me overcome this weakness already. I believe being in Yearbook next year will be beneficial to overcoming this issue as well, because it forces me to go out and talk to students and faculty. In the future, I also plan on signing up for articles that are more challenging. Ones I cannot simply interview my friends for. Ones I have to go out and find the right person for a comment. As I further my career in journalism, it is important I overcome this weakness.

reflection My most significant spread was the March Issue. That issue is when we began taking style a bit more seriously. Not only did we cover fast fashion, an industry that contributes to mass pollution, but we did a piece on New York’s fashion week and music festivals coming to town, both which were very timely. Other than good topics for articles, the pieces were done by strong writers. The design was also one of the best I have ever done. Adamson had just given a presentation full of examples on how to up our design skills through-

n2 out our spreads. One example really stuck out to me: ripping up pictures and making a collage. I decided to replicate that, because I loved it so much. It took up an entire page, but in a beautiful way, making the article seem as important as it was. I wanted to get that message across. The other page next to it, I made sure, complemented its color scheme and the spread as a whole was stunning. I was so proud of my work. It took a bit of time, as I had to individually rip each photograph, which set me back on designing the pages, but it was worth it. That was the first time I realized that I could interpret art and design I create in my spare time (I create collages often.) I also learned that sometimes great designs take time.

Dark side swept bangs straight from the early 2000s, glassy red-shot eyes, chipped nails, a variation of thrifted clothing, shaved heads, dangling earrings, distressed vans, decorated in locally printed band shirts and an air of exhaustion, fans linger anxiously in the dim room. The ensemble of the night, as always, features an eclectic mix of genres. Band members loiter backstage among the chaos that is a local show. Among the diverse crowd stands Sara Windom, lead singer and guitarist of Sunlaand. Accompanied by Michael Chmura on bass and James Hoag on drums, Sunlaand creates a vibe of their own by incorporating musical elements of surf/skate punk and pop. Windom, the bold and bodacious front woman of the band, shares her experiences as a member of the local music scene. “The vibe I feel on stage is like I am in the Scream movies but I’m also at a slumber party, like you know that Wizards of Waverly Place episode where Alex goes into the movie and it’s like a scream/slumber party movie where everyone dies but they’re at a sleepover,” said Windom. Created in October of 2015, Sunlaand started as a two piece. Windom and Chmura accidentally booked a show with esteemed West-Coast punk rock band, SWMRS, and indie darlings, The Aquadolls at 51 West in Tempe. Without a drummer, Windom and Chmura contacted James Hoag, a mutual friends, to fill in for the show. “We practiced all the time and we started getting along really well. At the last practice right before the show he was carrying out amp with me and he was like ‘oh maybe I should stay in this band’ and I said ‘well yeah maybe you should,’” said Windom. Since then, Windom, Hoag, and Chmura have played a wide variety of shows around Phoenix. The trio also landed a tour in Cali-

fornia, playing Orange County and Fullerton. Other milestones for the band include a gig at the Marquee and a feature story in the Phoenix New Times. “Seeing your name in the Phoenix New Times is a pretty cool feeling, it's like sh*t this is real,” remarks Windom. As the lead singer, Windom leads the band vocally on their musical conquests. Both her band members admire her hard work and dedication to Sunlaand. “She writes really catchy music and she seems to like to take charge and organize a lot of band business,” said Chmura, bassist of the band. In the future, Sunlaand plans on going back to a two piece band with Hoag going to college. They also plan on changing up their sound to a more mellow vibe and working on a new EP to unveil their new musical direction. Want to catch a Sunlaand show? Windom, Hoag, and Chmura will be playing at venues across the valley throughout the summer.

he invented arcology. Arcology is the mixing of architecture and ecology to introduce complexity and encourage miniaturization. Arcosanti rambles over 25 acres of land and is intended to partially sustain roughly 5,000 people. Currently, the structure is only about five percent of what Soleri originally designed. In about 700 years, the entire edifice will finally be complete. “I think Soleri was trying to go for a self-sustaining city… I think he successfully designed it but it’s not built all the way,” said Griffin Adams, a senior. Primarily designed by Soleri, there are bronzed and ceramic bells sold, as well as other artistic products like handmade jewelry, or paintings. One of the reasons this urban laboratory does not have as much exposure is the slow trickle of money. The framework of Arcosanti was inspired by the inner workings of a living system. As a living system matures and evolves it becomes more complicated and compressed. Ideally, a city should function in the same manner, increasing quality of life while decreasing pollution, food scarcity and natural resource depletion. “Designing all buildings like this would have a big impact because you take away all the pollution and emissions that come off,” said Adams. A phrase coined by Soleri is “lean alternative”, which is the antithesis of hyper consumption. This lean alternative is comprised of seven design principles, the key three being proximity, the urban-human scale and ecological envelope. Proximity dictates that all aspects of life can be experienced in a close space. Learning, living, leisure and working should all be interchangeable in a communal open space. In a typical city, the amount of space used is unproportional to the need of citizens. “We should prevent urban sprawl because of land availability. They don't make anymore of it, reusing land that closer to the urban core benefits us all over time,” said Roger Gannon, an architect.

ing on a bikini and heading over to the pool is common, but this season, something new is on the rise. One pieces are back in, and it seems that everything that was once popular in early days eventually makes it way back around into the fashion world. Once a teenage girl's last option for their swimsuit of choice, one pieces are now being hunted down by the same audience. The suit was first seen in the 50s and is now seen in popular stores like Urban Outfitters, Pacsun, Forever 21, Pink and more. “I like having a different type of suit that accentuates me differently than a bikini does, it's fun to mix it up,” said Haley Sterba, a junior. Whether girls are feeling more comfortable and confident in one pieces, or they chose to wear them as a fashion statement, they will be available in stores all summer long. “If I am swimming or out in the ocean, I prefer one pieces sometimes since they don’t fall off. I really like how secure they are and you don’t have to worry about your top or bottoms falling off,” said Taylor Frye, a junior. Depending on the suit itself, prices can vary anywhere from $10 to $100. “There are a lot of great places online too, I like to get mine at Southbeach Swimwear, Diane’s, and Beach Bunny,” said Sterba. This swimwear has been known to flatter women of all sizes. Some women feel more comfortable wearing a swimsuit in public if they are wearing a one piece. “I think they are so big right now because there are so many great styles and they work for everybody’s style and figure,” said Sterba. The suits have been modified to be more stylish than the classic one piece. Trends that designers create like cutouts, patterns, mesh, standout colors and strap detailing have been seen amongst many. However, after a long day in a suit that has multiple cutouts and straps, the suit can leave behind a bold tanline. “I don’t like the one pieces with all the cutouts because your tan lines are ridiculous. So for me I like the bikinis because I like a tan, and plus getting vitamin D is a good thing,” said Danica Gianni, an English teacher. According to instyle.com, more trends to be seen in one piece swimwear include strategically placed prints, flattering ruching, illusion mesh, and zippers. With every new trend comes downsides. One in particular is because it is a one piece, going to the bathroom can get a little awkward. But with the right cut, size and fit, everyone can rock a one piece this summer.

Choosing what to wear also has to do with the way one wants to be seen in society. This can also impact their self esteem. According to psychologistworld.com, men are more likely to be self conscious in public with the way they dress over women. “It is important to remember who you are and what you are comfortable wearing and try not to judge yourself so harshly if you do not look as good as you thought you did,” said Kailey McCann, a junior. One aspect in choosing what to wear has to do with a person showing off their own identity. Most everybody wants to be accepted into society by concepts, including what they wear and how they present themselves. However, some do not realize that they are subconciously showing their personal selves through what they chose to wear. “I feel like people ultimately, whether they know it or not, reflect their personality through their clothing style and the way they dress,” said Goman. The human brain can also help a person become attracted to the new things that are being presented in the fashion world. People keep up with the new trends to help stay relevant in society. “I like to see what the trends are and if I like them, but usually I like to dress in a different unique style that I created,” said Holland Loberg, a sophomore. As reported by welldoing.org, the way that people Michael dress can reflect their mood on that particular day. For example, if someone likes art, they may dress more in an artsy way rather than a sporty way,” said Goman. SARA Another way a person may stray from what they usually wear to impress someone or if they attend a special occasion. For example, someone may want to dress up for an interview or down if they are going out with friends. “There are definitely pressures from the social aspect to what you wear to these events. Getting to know the social aspect of the event before going is a good way to relate to other people,” said Dodrill. Not only does the way a person dresses reflect who they are, but people also express themselves through ways such as tattoos and piercings. T is no secret that online shopping has blown up in this generation, but a quick click online is causing serious damage to the storefronts of clothing companies. Well known stores such as Macy’s, Bebe, The Limited, American Apparel, Payless, and JCPenney are closing hundreds of stores nationwide. Whether it is due to bankruptcy, downsizing, or focusing on “better performing locations,” as Macy’s stated, there is one thing in common–all of these stores are having major success online. A study delivered by retailwire.com reported that 51 percent of adults prefer to shop online rather than in store. In addition, 54 percent of young consumers were seen shopping online than their counterparts. “Right now, I shop online maybe 50 percent of the time when I’m buying things. But really, only once in awhile do I really actually go to the store, I try to order as much of what I’m buying online,” said John Thompson, a business management

teacher and yearbook adviser. On the other hand, a 2007 study conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project Survey showed that only 26 percent of adults shopped or researched online items on an everyday basis in that year. That is a 25 percent increase in 10 years. The growth of the internet over the decade has taken control of the online shopping industry, and research proves it. “I don’t really like to shop online because I like to try things on before I buy them to make sure they actually fit. The only things I’ll buy online are material items like food or candles,” said Emma Povinelli, a junior. The question still lingers–why do people shop online? Although a factor, it is not just because of the growth and mainstreaming of it. “I think what’s happening is a lot of companies are using their time building websites and working on marketing their products online, and in turn, they’re not getting as much attention to their physical stores,” said Thompson. It is true–companies are tending to focus more on their online stores now more than

ever, and a big part of that comes from “online only” deals. By providing discounts that are not valid in-store, customers are drawn to the online store, decreasing their in-store value. To prove this, a quick trip to Macy’s website will show a 30 percent off when using the promo code “friend”. A click on the exclusions and details and some reading of the fine print, one can easily see the online only condition. Stores are trying to push their online shopping systems because of research and hard facts–it is true that people are making purchases online now more than ever. However, those who are still venturing to malls and standalone stores for their items can find themselves frustrated. “I feel like a lot of the dynamics around clothes center on how they look on you rather than the article themself, and if you order online you don’t get that same experience as you would in-store,” said Allie Workman, a junior and president of fashion club. It is still a mystery whether or not online shopping will become the only form of marketing, but it is definitely a possibility.

female gender will still gravitate towards those gender norms, and people who don’t will be more open to androgynous clothing,” said Gum. Although this emerging trend of monotonous style has taken hold of the runway, it has yet to translate to retail, especially in menswear. According to the Huffington Post, mass production has yet to take on androgynous style because of menswear consistently being opposed to change. On the other hand, this style traditionally takes hold in women’s clothing because of rapidly changing trends. Even androgynous clothing is often rare in the average retail stores, the opposite gender section does provide an easy alternative.

As competition season creeps up, Future Problem Solvers, or FPS, prepares to tackle issues impacting today's society. The first round is against clubs statewide. “In our competitions, we are given a future scene which is basically a hypothetical situation set in the future that is related to the topic we've been researching,” said Brett Cernich, a junior and treasurer of FPS. Cernich, a consistent member of FPS since his middle school years, was first asked to join by Joanne Spiess, Sonoran Trails Middle School FPS adviser. “Students are selected based on a combination of… test scores, and class grades from prior years, with an emphasis on language arts,” said Spiess. MAKING THE CUT

Madeline Howard discusses a new trend among teens.

Snip snip. A new hairstyle is slowly starting to make a comeback in 2017 and it is bangs. Bangs have been popular since the beginning of time and have gone in and out of style continuously. The sporadic comeback has people thinking about getting with the trend and trying something different with their look. “I love that the trend of bangs is coming back because it really gives people an opportunity to give a bold statement with their hair,” said Holland Loberg, a sophomore. Famous actors such as Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel have gotten in on the style before it was trending. Bangs can come in a wide range of styles such as wispy, choppy, blunt, and side swept. All of these styles can look different and unique on everyone. “I love a bold and blunt cut bang because I feel that it gives your style more of an edgier feel,” said Loberg. Getting bangs can be a bit tricky because it depends on how the hair is growing already. Some style of bangs may look different on others only because of the way their hair is laid out and the frame of the face. “I prefer just straight bangs. When you have too straight of bangs, it looks really bad so you want to add some unevenness,” said Zoe Milne, a junior. Styling bangs is pretty simple because there is only so much that can be done with them. Some styling techniques include pinning them back in a twist formation, pulling them up into a top knot bun, pulling them back into a braid, or just run a brush through them. “It’s super easy to style bangs. I just wake up and don’t usually do much to them,” said Johna Jacobson, a spanish teacher. Some people end up regretting bangs because of maintenance or even just the commitment of trying something new. “I regret not growing them out when I was younger because sometimes they don’t cooperate with me in the morning or they just look bad and there’s nothing I can do about it,” said Milne. Not only are bangs coming back for girls, but they are also making a debut for guys as well. Man bang styles include side swept, parted, short and blunt, and regular straight bangs. Most men style their bangs, so one couldn’t tell that they had bangs, but Zac Efron and Justin Bieber have shown off their side swept bangs before. “Back in the day men used to have bangs, nothing too crazy, but in the past ten years or so, men have just been styling their hair up, so I feel like it would take a while for the trend to catch on,” said Jacobson.

breaking stereotypes in a difficult situation when her six year old son asked why a boy was wearing makeup. That mother, Nicole Dean, made a blog post lashing out at Charles. According to the post, Dean was unsure how to explain the commercial and chose to tell her homeschooled son that Charles was a girl instead. This post went viral, and while the response had mostly been supportive towards Charles, it brought up a discussion on whether or not the makeup brand made the right decision. "I don't think it's appropriate. Like do whatever you want in your own home but this is on television for the world to see, and kids shouldn't think that kind of thing is normal," said Bryson Rusynyk, a sophomore. Because of Charles' internet presence, this debate often takes place in the comments of his own photos and videos. As there are two sides of this argument,

there are also people who support Charles. "It's good that he can make a job out of something he enjoys and is good at. Not very many people get that, and he's so young. He's probably worked hard for this," says Gina Mure, a Scottsdale resident who buys from the brand. Charles also has public support from his family and friends. He is the face of the So Lashy! Mascara launched by CoverGirl, and has been on shows like Ellen to talk about his life, struggles, and success. Coming out as gay when he was 12, Charles is actually relatively new to the makeup scene. He is the first male face of a makeup brand, but he is not the only guy to wear makeup. There has been a burst in male beauty gurus over the past few years, with people such as Manny Mua, Jeffree Star, and Bretman Rock taking the spotlight. "I wouldn't wear makeup, but I don't care if someone else does it. It's just not my thing," said Massimo Garcia, a JAMES CHARLES, new face of CoverGirl with a sophomore. full face of makeup. 4NEW YORK DAILY NEWS This new advancement may change advertising for popular brands and the people who use them.

A young woman sits in front of her vanity mirror, blinking while she applies mascara to her eyelashes. This scenario is what many people imagine when it comes to the makeup industry, but with James Charles as the new face of the CoverGirl makeup brand, that scenario may be changing. Charles is a 17 year old makeup artist, and now he is the first ever CoverBoy. Starting off on the internet, James Charles has gained more than a million followers on Instagram with his makeup tutorials and beauty videos. While he does get backlash on many of his posts, his work with makeup is seen with overwhelming support. Soon after Charles' commercial with CoverGirl aired on television, a mother found herself

FASHION CLUB CLOTHING DRIVE

By OLIVIA STICKEL g food editor

With looks like overalls, scrunchies and clear plastic shoes coming back in style, many of today’s high fashion trends are inspired by none other than kids clothing. This does not mean that superstar models will be seen wearing five times too small shirts or Justice shorts, but the styles themselves are making a comeback in adult clothing. Whether it be accessories or clothing itself, they all seem to be prevailing in the adult-driven style world. Just one look at popular clothing stores such as Forever 21, Wetseal, or Pacsun, shows that bright colors and patterns that this generation wore when they were young are still relevant as they grow older. However, if you look at what most kids wear these days, it is not much different from traditional adult clothing. “Adults are starting to wear kids’ clothing because our childhood was, hopefully, a good time in everyone’s life, and who wouldn’t want to feel like a kid again,” said Emily Watkins, a junior. Obviously, not everything that is meant to be for childrenswear will make it in the adult fashion industry. Items like hair tattoos, neon tutus, or colored animal print jeans probably are not going to be seen in the mature fashion industry. “There are some thing that would be really weird to see on adults, stuff like Barney T-shirts wouldn’t work well,” said Fernanda Brigneti, a junior. However, with the right pairing of accessories, even an oversized T-Shirt can look classy and refined. Though many of these comebacks are ‘90s in theme, childrenswear and adult style was not always so similar. Kids would wear their clothes, and adults would wear theirs. “I think the ‘90s was the start of seeing younger people’s clothing in grown-ups. Adults wore overalls, scrunchies, and started that trend,” said Brigneti. However, if adults’ fashion has not always been this way, things may go back to the way they were. “I guess you could ask the question why anything ever ‘comes back’. Like why do bellbottoms or incredibly baggy jeans come back as a fashion trend? It’s just somethings that’s a fad, and it will eventually die out,” said Justin Burns, an English teacher and fashion club adviser.

MOVING AT A TREND PER MIN-

ute, fast fashion giants tailor and trash clothes causing environmental alarm. Fast fashion, by definition, is a phenomenon in the fashion industry where retailers accelerate the clothing production process in order to get new trends off the runway and into stores as quickly and cheaply as possible. The fast fashion business model turns two or four seasons into 52, enforcing the feeling of falling behind among consumers. Companies like Forever 21, H&M, Zara, and TopShop are some of the top businesses that use this production process. The model produces an excess of clothing and pollution. According to Ecowatch, fast fashion is the second dirtiest industry, next to big oil. “I feel like they don’t really worry about the environment, they only worry about how much they can sell,” said Fernanda Brigneti, a junior and fashion enthusiast. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that redirecting of the excess textiles into recycling

programs would be the equivalent of eliminating 7.3 million cars and their fossil fuel emissions. Many different businesses are working to combat this issue. Ethical sustainable alternatives are available to fastpaced, high-pollutant clothing companies. Anything from activewear to everyday apparel has an alternative brand. Many of these brands are priced higher than fast fashion apparel because of the production processes. “If you are willing to spend just a little more money, the benefit outweighs the cost,” said Janet Anderson, a biology teacher. For basic pieces, Grana, a clothing company based in Hong Kong, stands by their pledge to make luxury quality clothing with the lowest possible markup. Lacausa also offers basic, comfortable pieces at a decent price. The company has also made a pledge to donate ten percent of their sales to the American Civil Liberties Union, a national organization that works in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend the individual rights of citizens around the country. “We could start shopping at smaller boutiques or shopping at

Goodwill or other places that reuse clothing because of there is so much of it [clothing] in the world, we could just recycle,” said Aidia Nielson, a junior. Other eco-friendly clothing companies include Petra Von Kant, Ethica, Patagonia, and Levi’s. Petra Von Kant is a vintage company that hand picks their clothing, promoting unique style and recycling. Ethica has pieces curated by a wide-range of designers, made in the USA and produced ethically. Patagonia and Levi’s are two well-known brands that have continued to be socially and ecologically conscientious, according to their mission statements. Other initiatives, like H&M’s new conscious collection are taking clothing donations to reuse for new pieces. ASOS green room is doing a similar textile recycling program as well, working with eco-friendly and sustainable companies to work towards reducing their impact on the planet. Thrift stores also provide fast fashion-free clothing for cheap. Goodwill, the Salvation Army, Buffalo Exchange, and other secondhand stores often provide the same shopping thrill as Forever 21. “I would recommend if they want to find cheap clothes that they should go thrifting. I’ve found more stuff that I love that is really good quality at thrift stores,” said Brigneti. Environmental groups, fashion gurus, and other companies have been making efforts to try and combat this issue.

Thousands of people flocked to the runways of the 2017 Winter and Fall collections of New York Fashion Week, which took place from Feb. 9 until Feb. 16. Some designers that had collections walk the runway included Monse, Oscar de la Renta,Yeezy, Calvin Klein, Tory Burch, and Ralph Lauren. These designers brought along some familiar faces like Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Naomi Campbell, and Ashley Graham. Graham was one of 27 plus sized models that took part in fashion week. “I really like Hailey Baldwin, she’s one of the more popular ones, but I feel like she also has some unique features and she’s so pretty,” said Chloe Hislop, a senior and attendee of New York Fashion Week. With the freezing temperatures in New York, there was a trend circulating around fur coats. “There were so many people with fur coats on. People were even wearing pink and green ones and it was actually pretty cool,” said Hislop. Another trend that is coming to the spotlight is the Mary Jane high heels. These heels were spotted at fashion week in high end shows, such as Marc Jacobs. The Mary Jane heels in the Marc Jacobs show also had a crystal detailed heel. “I really like that new style of heel called the Mary Jane heel. I feel like it’s on a lot of boots and just regular shoes and I’m glad it’s coming back,” said Ashley Kirtzstein, a senior who

attended New York Fashion Week. While walking down the runway, some brands gave their models a little something extra to make their looks pop. In the Marchesa fashion show, some of the models sported floral headpieces to go with their outfits. Some other fashion shows included diamond-like head pieces. “One show had really cool celestial-like head pieces that went really well with the model’s cream dresses. The whole thing was really cool,” said Hislop. Some of the different shows also came with different environments as well. Designers wanted to create an environment that goes along with their theme for their collection. There were some shows, including one by Elizabeth Kennedy, that portrayed the runway to be a tropical theme with palm trees and bright colors to go along with her collection. “Everything was pretty laid back since we didn’t go to the more higher end ones. There was this one show where there would be music and dancers in between each model that walked and it made the show really fun,” said Kirtzstein. The floral trend is coming through for the upcoming Spring and Summer. Celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Blake Lively have shown off their own floral outfits as well. “The floral trend might be a hit or miss because it does look cute on some things and than not so cute on other things,” said Kathleen Roberson, a math teacher. With the looks on New York Fashion Week, each person who attends is able to recreate the outfit to fit their own personal style.

DIGGING UP THE DON’TS OF DECADES PAST Whether brought into fame by a celebrity or not, it is no doubt that fashion trends travel fast, regardless of how they may look in hindsight. However, trends do grow old, and leave behind a laugh and a cringey head nod when seen again.

COLORED BERMUDA SHORTS These shorts gained popularity around 1989, and stayed in the spotlight until the end of the 2000s. Normally they would have a plaid print, Aéropostale being a main provider.

UGGS The sheepskin boots seen on almost every girl and boy in 2010 will never be forgotten. The brand was endorsed by celebrities Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lopez.

JUICY COUTURE SWEATS With popularity from the ‘90s all the way to the 2010s, Juicy’s name rose to fame by giving away their clothes to celebrities, such as Madonna, Britney Spears, Victoria Beckham, and Paris Hilton.

JNCO JEANS In the ‘90s, these wide pant legs, which followed along with the street style of the time, gained recognition. Many male celebrities wore JNCO jeans on an everyday basis.

ANDS waving in a frenzy, the overwhelming sound of hundreds of voices screaming at once, nonstop dancing. This is a music festival. There’s no question as to what will be found, but what to wear? Depending on the festival–indoor, outdoor, genre of music–clothing needs to be selected carefully, based on the perfect mix of versatile standout style and comfort. Here are some real-life options that will not lead to chafing, sweat stains, or loss of hair. “It really depends on who you’re seeing, and what the venue is...all I know is never wear a dress,” said Katie Butler, a junior. Jeans are one thing that never go out of style. But, because this is Arizona, pants at a festival is probably the worst idea ever. Next best thing is jean shorts. “I think jeans are a flexible closet staple, you can wear them with pretty much anything and they look stylish,” said Sydney Smith, a fashion entrepreneur. Another staple is loose-fitting, relaxed T-shirts. Tuck it into those jean shorts. In case of bad weather or other emergencies, tie a spiffy flannel or hoodie around the waist for extra coverage. Shoes are the foundation of every good outfit, and being such, they should be chosen with utmost care. First thing to think about is blisters. Do not opt for those adorable strappy heels. Ever. “My first thought when I see someone in heels is she made a mistake,” said Julian Voitek, a junior. A retro pair of Nikes, maybe some printed Vans or vintage Chuck Taylors will cover feet while still allowing personality to shine through. If sandals are a must, go for something like Birkenstocks. Even with a high price tag, the durability they provide is well worth it. MARCH 10, 2017 ■ 15

ing on a bikini and heading over to the pool is common, but this season, something new is on the rise.

Everyone has their own daily routine consisting of shuffling through the closet and trying to find the perfect outfit. Some chose their outfits without a thought to it. However, the outfits that someone chooses has a lot to do with their personality and characteristics. “There may be some biological aspects that people have that push them to wear the things that they do. Also, someone might want to keep up with the norms in society and improve your status with other people,” said Chris Dodrill, a psychology teacher. The way that people chose what they wear has to do with the way that they think. Some people are drawn to bright colors, while others tend to prefer darker shades for their clothing. “From a psychological perspective, your dislike or like for lighter or darker colors could be programmed in your DNA, and with experience, these opinions on things can grow or decrease,” said Audrey Goman, a junior in an AP Psychology class. As reported by welldoing.org, the way that people dress can reflect their mood on that particular day. Also, dressing a certain way can also relate back to a person’s lifestyle. “I think style can reflect on what a person enjoys doing. For example, if someone likes art, they may dress more in an artsy way rather than a sporty way,” said Goman. Another way a person may stray from what they usually wear to impress someone or if they attend a special occasion. This way allows people show who they are in more of a personal way to show who someone is.

Cultural appropriation, a rising issue in fashion, is being seen more and more on runways, at music festivals, and in magazines, causing tension and anger among minority groups. By definition, cultural appropriation is exploiting different aspects of a minority culture without knowing the meaning or significance behind it. Classic targets of misappropriation are native american headdresses, traditional indian bindis, and muslim hijabs. “I feel cultural appropriation can be dangerous and frustrating for minorities. It is offensive when aspects of their culture that have been deemed “dirty” or “ghetto” are glorified by non-ethnic people,” said Halle Abadi, a sophomore. Although there are undertones of animosity when it comes to cultural appropriation, many see it differently. Many believe the mixing of cultures is inevitable and to stop it would result in segregation or a further divide. Others believe that it is not always intended as an attack on minority culture. “Even though we are creating our own culture, and maybe twisting it into something a little bit different, it can sometimes

be a tip of the hat or a nod to the culture that originally devised it,” said Geoff Johnson, a history teacher. The fashion world is one of the top industries that battle with issues involving cultural appropriation. Designers often take inspiration from ethnic cultures but use white models on runways. This then causes anger from colored models. Marc Jacobs styled white models with colorful faux dreadlocks during one of his shows at NewYork Fashion Week. This prompted internet backlash. Jacobs replied through an instagram post, stating that he, “...doesn’t see race or color, just people.” Models have gone as far as to protest and boycott certain brands. For example, during Paris Fashion Week, black models protested brands they found to be misappropriating culture. One of their big targets was Gucci. Out of Gucci’s 119 models, only 17 of them were colored. The show also included many homages to African American culture, such as ethnic hairstyles, jewelry, and music. “The fashion industry has repeatedly disrespected culture by hiring white models who wear kimonos, african clothing, or

hijabs instead of hiring ethnic models to represent their own culture,” said Abadi. Some find cultural appropriation on the runway offensive while others see it as designers exploring worlds beyond their own for inspiration. This also goes hand in hand with a belief in unity and mixing among cultures as opposed to separation. “For me, I love to see diversity. My family is very diverse with all kinds of different races and religions, and it’s so cool to talk to them and learn from their different perspectives. I do not feel as if cultural appropriation is harmful. You see people daily taking things from different cultures with no intentions of doing harm,” said Katie Thomas, a senior. Fashion magazines have also been a source of tension when it comes to cultural appropriation. For instance, Vogue Italia did a shoot for their front cover with Gigi Hadid. In all of the photos Hadid is seen sporting an afro. Hadid and Vogue received a considerable amount of backlash on social media. This was not Vogue or Hadid’s only offence. Hadid also did a cover for Vogue Arabia wearing a traditional hijab. Although Hadid is half-Palestinian, the event still caused uproar.

online sales force customers behind closed doors

By Olivia Stickel g food editor

Switching up men’s and women’s clothing, the fashion industry is...

By venturing outside of limitations set by stereotypes, fashion kingpins have created a movement in the fashion industry. Designers are looking outside of social normalities for inspiration and blurring the lines between gender specific clothing. “The envy of the freedom of design is taking hold of the designers and they are getting to be as free as they want with this new wave taking off,” said Aidia Nielson, a junior. Unisex clothing is not new to the fashion industry. Androgynous style first took shape in the early 1900s as females began wearing trousers. Designers like Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent headed movements that rejected ideas of traditional femininity in a time of rigid gender roles with the power of the pantsuit. Then came the ‘70s. Musicians like David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, the New York Dolls, and Iggy Pop exuded androgyny and pushed the boundaries of masculinity with makeup, colorful, tight clothing, and bold, aggressive femininity. The way these artists challenged constraints of gender created a cultural revolution. The same breakthrough energy continued throughout the ‘80s and was reborn in the ‘90s with grunge. Grunge brought the same intensity of the ‘70s but with more guyliner and less color. Today, the fashion industry has far passed the once taboo ideas of women wearing pants or men wearing floral prints. Runway looks from designers like Prada and Yves Saint Laurent continually blur lines between genders and focus on creating looks that defies limitations of masculinity and femininity. “I think they [gender norms] are the primary influence on style. Fashion evolves in a way that matches the masculine and feminine norms of each generation. Then again, it could be the opposite. The fashion of each generation might define the masculine and feminine norms. Who's to say,” said Molly Gum, teacher and LGBTQ advocate.

teacher and yearbook adviser.
